Iran says detained ringleader of Ansar al-Furqan terror group

Iran Police

Doostali Jalilian, the provincial police chief, was cited by IRNA as saying on Saturday that the individual, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was a top-brass member of the so-called Ansar al-Furqan terror outfit, and was arrested in the provincial capital city of Zahedan.

Back in June 2017, Jalil Qanbarzehi, the leader of the terrorist group, was killed by Iranian forces during an operation in the Qasr-e Qand region of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Qanbarzehi took the helm of Ansar al-Furqan, when his predecessor, Hesham Azizi, was also killed by Iranian security forces in late April 2015 following a successful security operation in the southern Baftan region of the province.

Sistan and Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has witnessed several terror attacks targeting both civilians and security forces in the past years.

UN relief chief warns end to Gaza war ‘long overdue’

Gaza War

“It is not enough for six months of war to be a moment of remembrance and mourning,” Martin Griffiths wrote on X.

“It must also spur a collective determination that there be a reckoning for this betrayal of humanity,” he added.

Israel’s war against Gaza has escalated into a “betrayal of humanity”, the United Nations’ humanitarian chief said.

In a statement on the eve of the six-month anniversary of the war, Griffiths called for a “collective determination that there be a reckoning for this betrayal of humanity”.

“Each day, this war claims more civilian victims,” stated Griffiths, who will leave his post at the end of June due to health reasons.

“Every second that it continues sows the seeds of a future so deeply obscured by this relentless conflict.”

Israel has waged a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack in early October by the Palestinian group, Hamas, killed less than 1,200 people.

More than 33,100 Palestinians have since been killed and over 75,800 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

Israel has also imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip, leaving its population, particularly residents of northern Gaza, on the verge of starvation.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which last week asked it to do more to prevent famine in Gaza.

Israelis protest against Netanyahu’s government, urging captive deal with Hamas

Israel Protest

The demonstrators shouted slogans late on Saturday, expressing anger at Netanyahu’s government for its inability to secure the release of the captives after six months of fighting.

Israeli media reported scenes of confrontations between security forces and protesters in Tel Aviv, where demonstrators reportedly started several fires, before they were quickly put out by the police.

People chanted “Police, police who exactly are you guarding?”, and “Ben-Gvir is a terrorist”, referring to Israel’s minister of national security, the Haaretz daily newspaper reported.

The protest organisers quoted by local media said rallies were taking place at about 50 other locations in addition to Tel Aviv.

Such Saturday protests have become a regular occurrence in Tel Aviv and other parts of the occupied territories, since the early months of the war that began on October 7.

The latest demonstrations come as ceasefire negotiations – which include discussions about the release of the captives – are set to take place in Cairo. The talks are being mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States.

Organisers of the anti-government protests in Tel Aviv say that 100,000 people participated in the demonstrations, according to the Israeli media.

Israel declared war on Gaza after Hamas carried out a deadly attack on October 7, killing some 1,200 people and taking more than 250 others captive. More than 100 have since been released, but others remain captive in Gaza.

Netanyahu launched Israel’s relentless war on Gaza in the aftermath of Hamas’s attack.

In the last six months, at least 33,100 Palestinians have been killed and 75,800 wounded in Israeli attacks on the strip – with starvation and famine reported in particular in the north of the enclave due to lack of international aid access.

A new round of indirect truce negotiations is expected to begin in Cairo on Sunday. CIA Director Bill Burns will attend the talks along with his Egyptian counterpart. A representative from Hamas will also attend, the group said on Saturday. The Israeli side has not yet said whether it would send a delegation to the talks.

Iran Afghanistan Border

Seyyed Jalal Mousavi added that this is while Afghan trucks easily move cargo through Iran without being required to undergo technical inspection, smuggle Iranian diesel and destroy the road infrastructure with a very high tonnage.

Mousavi criticized the Iranian authorities for “being too soft” on Afghan truckers.

He also spoke about the problems that Iranian drivers face when they want to travel to European countries, saying Europeans do not give visas to Iranian drivers.

According to Mousavi, most of the Iranian drivers who used to carry cargo to Europe are now working inside Iran because of the difficulty in obtaining a visa.

The joint letter sent to Macron was shared on X by left-wing lawmaker and deputy group leader of the La France Insoumise party, Mathilde Panot.

“Because France must not, cannot, and will not break international law, 115 members of parliament expressly call on the President of the Republic to immediately halt the sale of arms to Israel,” said Panor.

“France’s role is to promote peace, not to be complicit in genocide.”

The lawmakers stressed in the letter that even arms sales “deemed purely defensive” should be halted to Tel Aviv.

“It seems important to remember that similar measures have already been taken by other countries, such as Canada, the Netherlands and Spain,” they added.

“It is time for France to rise to the historic moment. “

Flouting the International Court of Justice (ICJ) provisional ruling, Israel continues its onslaught on the Gaza Strip where at least 33,100 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and 75,750 injured since Oct. 7, 2023, according to Palestinian health authorities.

Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Hamas, which Tel Aviv said killed less than 1,200 people.

The Israeli war on Gaza has pushed 85% of the territory’s population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the ICJ. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
