China says NATO threatening global peace

Lin was asked by Bloomberg at a daily briefing to comment on recent reports that the US-led military bloc is planning to sign a cooperation agreement with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington.

The spokesperson responded by stating that NATO is a “product of the Cold War and the world’s largest military alliance”. Despite claiming to be a regional and defensive organization, the bloc has continued to “expand its power across borders, break through defense zones, and provoke confrontation”, Lin added.

These actions, according to the spokesperson, expose NATO’s “deep-rooted Cold War mentality and ideological bias, which is the real source of risk threatening global peace and stability”.

“NATO should abide by its regional and defensive organization positioning, stop creating tensions in the Asia-Pacific, peddle Cold War thinking and camp confrontation, and stop messing up Europe and trying to mess up the Asia-Pacific,” the spokesman said.

Lin’s comments come as NATO bolsters its efforts to establish relations with countries across the Asia-Pacific, at the same time claiming it does not seek to formally expand into the region.

Earlier this year, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg explained that the bloc feels that it must respond to the ever-changing security landscape in Asia, particularly because of alleged Chinese aggression. “This is not about NATO moving into Asia, but instead about the fact that China is coming close to us”, Stoltenberg told attendees at the exclusive Davos gathering in January.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Quian responded by calling Stoltenberg’s statements “inappropriate” and described NATO as a “walking war machine” that “brings disorder everywhere.”

In 2021, the US, UK, and Australia also established the so-called AUKUS security partnership, which aims to help Canberra acquire nuclear-powered submarines. Washington has extended invitations to other countries in the Asia-Pacific, such as Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, to participate in the project.

The AUKUS pact has been condemned by Beijing as an attempt to build an “Asia-Pacific version of NATO.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry has warned that such moves only further the “Cold War mentality,” stimulate an arms race, and undermine regional stability and peace.

Speaking in Hanoi, Vietnam last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin also insisted that NATO’s aspirations in the Asia-Pacific represent a “threat to all countries in the region, including the Russian Federation”. Putin vowed that Moscow will not allow these actions to go unanswered.

Fire in Karkheh National Park in southern Iran put out

Wildfires Iranian forests

Firefighters have been on the scene since Monday to put out the fire that affected over 65 hectares of land in the park.

No report has yet been released on the extent of damage to the site.

Earlier in June, bushfires burned large swathes of the forests in the area which took several days to extinguish.

Drought, human factors, and the burning of wheat fields by farmers are the main causes of fire in the Karkheh forests.

The Karkheh National Park is the main habitat of the Persian yellow deer.

Hamas says Israeli attacks not helping Gaza ceasefire talks, Netanyahu creating obstacles

Gaza War

In a statement on Monday, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh warned that the “catastrophic consequences of what is happening in Gaza” could “reset the negotiation process to square one”.

Netanyahu and his army will bear “full responsibility for the collapse of this path”, Hamas quoted Haniyeh as saying.

The statement added Haniyeh made “urgent contact” with mediators Qatar and Egypt over the expanding actions of the Israeli military, which issued further evacuation orders for areas in the neighbourhoods of Gaza City, displacing thousands of Palestinians, many of whom have been forced to move multiple times.

In a separate statement, Hamas accused Netanyahu of escalating “his aggression and crimes against our people” in what it said were “attempts to forcibly displace them in order to thwart all efforts to reach an agreement”.

Israel has killed at least 38,193 Palestinians and wounded 87,903 others since October 7, Gaza’s health ministry reported on Monday.

It comes as Egypt, Qatar and the United States step up efforts to mediate a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas has dropped a demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before the Palestinian movement would sign an agreement.

But Netanyahu’s office reiterated in a statement on Sunday that “any deal will allow Israel to return [to Gaza] and fight until all the goals of the war are achieved”.

As talks repeatedly flounder over differences between the parties, mediators Egypt and Qatar were due to host new meetings this week, according to officials.

US says not ready to resume nuclear negotiations with Iran under Pezeshkian

Masoud Pezeshkian

White House spokesperson John Kirby stated on Monday the United States was not ready to resume nuclear talks with Iran under the new president.

“We’ll see what this guy wants to get done, but we are not expecting any changes in Iranian behavior,” he added.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller also told reporters the United States did not expect policy changes from Iran after Pezeshkian and downplayed chances to resume dialogue.

“We have no expectation that this election will lead to a fundamental change in Iran’s direction or its policies.”

Asked if the United States was at least willing to reopen diplomacy with Iran after Pezeshkian’s election, Miller said: “We have always said that diplomacy is the most effective way to achieve an effective, sustainable solution with regard to Iran’s nuclear program.”

Pezeshkian, who has pledged to open Iran to the world, decisively won a run-off and became the country’s ninth elected president.

The sole moderate candidate in the race received 53.7 percent of the votes, or 16.3m of the more than 30 million ballots cast. His rival Saeed Jalili got 44.3 percent, or 13.5m.

On Saturday, Pezeshkian acknowledged “the difficult path ahead”, but extended a hand to all Iranians.

“I extend my hand towards you and swear on my honour that I will not leave you alone on this path. Don’t leave me alone.”

Erdoğan congratulates Pezeshkian on presidential election victory

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan

A statement made by the Presidential Communications Directorate said Erdoğan called Pezeshkian to congratulate him. The two leaders discussed Türkiye-Iran relations, as well as regional and global developments.

Erdoğan told Pezeshkian that he believes bilateral relations between the two countries, based on deep-rooted historical ties, will further develop in the new era.

He also wished him success in his term.

Pezeshkian won a runoff election on Friday against the ultraconservative Saeed Jalili to replace President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.

The 69-year-old reformist secured more than 16 million votes, around 54%, with Jalili winning more than 13 million, roughly 44%, out of about 30 million votes cast.

The new president found wide coverage in Turkish media for his part-Turkic roots. His father is an Iranian Azerbaijani, while his mother hails from Iran’s Kurdish community.

Iran’s president-elect vows to continue supporting axis of resistance

Masoud Pezeshkian

In his message, Pezeshkian thanked Nasrallah for his “kind” and “valuable” message following the president-elect’s electoral victory.

Pezeshkian noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported the resistance of regional people against the fake Zionist regime, noting that this support is rooted in the principled policies of the Islamic establishment and a cause pursued by late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini.

Pezeshkian went on to express confidence that regional resistance groups will not let the Zionist regime to continue its war-mongering and murderous policies against the oppressed people of Palestine and other nations in the region.

The president-elect then wished prosperity for the people of Lebanon and divine assistance for the resistance fighters whom he described as “heroes”.

Vladimir Putin

Putin wished Pezeshkian success in his new post and prosperity for the Iranian people.

While noting that the Iran-Russia ties are at their highest level now, Putin expressed hope that under the new president in Iran, the relations will be further expanded and the agreements reached under late Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi will be implemented.

Pezeshkian for his part said the Islamic Republic considers ties with Russia “very important”.

Pezeshkian noted that his administration will undoubtedly make efforts to further bolster relations with Russia.

He also said the new administration will also pursue the implementation of all agreements that Tehran signed under late president Ebrahim Raisi with Moscow.

Pezeshkian stressed that cooperation between the two countries in international and regional organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and Eurasia is important, adding that the documents of the comprehensive partnership treaty between Tehran and Moscow have been finalized and Iran is ready to sign it on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia.

Pardis Technology Park to be changed to Iran International Innovation Zone

Rouhollah Dehghani Firouz Abadi

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Dehghani noted that six month ago a proposal was presented by the Center for Strategic Studies of the vice presidency  to late president Ebrahim Raisi to create an international innovation zone like many countries in the world.

Dehghani said the president agreed to the proposal and now the Pardis Technology Park will be upgraded in terms of physical appearance, roof and grounds as well as legal facilities so that it can change its nature into an international innovation zone.

He said one of the valuable achievements of the 13th administration was the creation of infrastructure for the development and advancement of technologies in the future.

The vice president also pointed to the existence of brainware capacity and educated manpower in Iran and the necessity of paying special attention to the field of emerging technologies.

He said moving toward the development of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cognitive sciences, connectivity, information and communication, digital economy, etc. can be a special opportunity for the top clubs and for the progress of the country.

The vice president  announced the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Organization building on Tuesday, July 9, in the presence of the acting president.

Dehghani said the launch of this complex and the formation of the council had been approved recently.

He underlined that the regulations for the promotion of think tanks have been compiled and so far nearly 10 groups have received certificates that confirm they are knowledge-based entities.

Officials: Dozens killed as Russia bombs Ukrainian cities, including children’s hospital in Kyiv

Russia Ukraine War

Almost 40 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded across Ukraine in a barrage of Russian missile attacks – the deadliest in months.

A missile smashed into a children’s hospital in the capital, Kyiv, on Monday, trapping victims under rubble. Dozens of volunteers, doctors and rescue workers dug through debris of a part of Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialised Hospital in a desperate search for survivors after the rare daytime bombardment.

Videos and photos from the scene of the children’s hospital showed volunteers working with police and security services to sift through the rubble as smoke billowed from the hospital, as staff described how they tried to rush children to safety in the wake of the attack.

Two floors of the hospital were demolished, comprising an area of 400 square meters (4,300 sq ft), the emergency service said, while Ukraine’s health minister Viktor Liashko said intensive care units, oncology departments and surgery units had been damaged.
More than 600 patients were evacuated from the hospital, with more than 100 transferred to other healthcare facilities, Liashko added, according to state news agency Ukrinform.
Search and rescue operations continued into Tuesday after the large-scale bombardment struck areas in the capital, as well as in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated Russian forces fired more than 40 missiles at five cities, mainly in the south and east of the country as well as Kyiv.

The attacks came as Zelensky visited Warsaw before heading to the NATO summit in Washington, DC, where he was expected to appeal for more military support from the country’s allies.

Natalia Svidler, 40, was in the hospital at the time of the strike with her two-year-old son as he awaits surgery this week.

“The nurses told us to go down to the basement. After a while, we heard a loud rumble, and then the ceiling in the basement collapsed a little,” she told the AFP news agency at the scene.

“Everyone got very scared, of course. Everyone started screaming and running,” she added.

Ukrainian energy operator DTEK announced three electrical substations had been destroyed or damaged in the attack, the latest in a series of strikes that have halved the country’s energy generation capacity in recent months.

In Zelensky’s hometown, Kryvyi Rih, which has been repeatedly targeted by Russian bombardment, the strikes killed at least 10 people and wounded more than 40, officials confirmed.

There was no immediate comment on the strikes from the Kremlin, but it insists its forces do not target civilian infrastructure.

Moscow claims Ukraine’s plan to hijack Russian strategic bomber foiled

Russian Military Aircraft

Kiev’s spies offered a Russian air force pilot money and Italian citizenship if he agreed to fly the aircraft to Ukraine, the agency said in a statement on Monday.

The involvement of special services of NATO countries in the failed hijacking was uncovered, the FSB said. It did not name specific members of the US-led military bloc.

During the “operational game”, Russian counterintelligence officers were able to obtain information that helped the military to carry out a successful strike again the Ukrainian armed forces’ Ozernoye airfield, it added.

The facility is located near the city of Zhytomir in northwest Ukraine.

The FSB also published a video of the Russian pilot, who helped the agency with the operation. His identity was concealed and voiced changed in the clip.

The airman said he had been contacted on Telegram by a person who revealed he was working for Ukrainian intelligence.

According to the Russian serviceman, the man – who identified himself as Pavlo – started to threaten his relatives and demanded information about the Russian aircraft or to set the planes on fire.

Pavlo later “offered to hijack a warplane to the territory of Ukraine, and not any warplane, but a nuclear-capable strategic long-range bomber”, the pilot stated.

The Russian serviceman added that instead of cooperating with the Ukrainian spy, he “went to his superiors and told them everything”.

The clip also included screenshots of conversations between the pilot and Ukrainian officer. Judging by the texts, the reward promised to the Russian sericeman for stealing the plane was $3 million.

The FSB reported foiling a similar plot by Ukrainian intelligence in July 2022. Back then, several Russian pilots were offered up to $2 million, EU passports and a comfortable life in the West for flying their planes to Ukraine. But the airmen instead worked with Russian counterintelligence officers, helping them to obtain information about Kiev’s forces.

The Kremlin announced the FSB deserved “top marks” for carrying out the sophisticated operation. According to reports, the Ukrainians was especially interested in Su-34 fighter-bombers and Tu-22M3 strategic aircraft.
