Nearly 1 million killed, wounded in Russia’s war in Ukraine: Report

Russia Ukraine War

Kyiv and Moscow have mostly avoided commenting on the casualties their forces suffered during the war, which has been ongoing for two and half years.

A “confidential Ukrainian estimate from earlier this year” put Kyiv’s losses at 80,000 soldiers killed and 400,000 wounded, the WSJ wrote, citing undisclosed sources.

President Volodymyr Zelensky presented a much lower number of military fatalities in February – 31,000. He did not reveal the number of wounded troops.

Western intelligence estimates cited by the WSJ placed Russian losses at up to 200,000 dead and 400,000 wounded. This is close to Kyiv’s estimates on Moscow’s casualties, which is over 635,000 killed and wounded as of Sept. 17.

Leaking Pentagon documents reported on by The Economist in July suggest that Russian losses could be even more serious, with the highest estimate being 728,000 troops killed, injured, or captured.

Moscow has not disclosed its casualties during the war. The last figure provided by Russian authorities was 5,937 killed soldiers as of September 2022.

Both Ukraine and Russia have sought to replenish the ranks of their militaries as there appears to be no end of the war in sight. Kyiv adopted new legislation on mobilization in the spring, lowering the conscription age from 27 to 25 and imposing stricter penalties for dodging draft.

In turn, Russia carried out a partial mobilization in September 2022 and, according to Ukraine’s intelligence, continues “covertly” drafting roughly 30,000 troops every month. Moscow primarily targets residents of economically weaker regions and migrants rather than men from wealthy urban centers to avoid discontent and an economic downturn.

The war brought a demographic shock to both countries, already struggling with population growth. An estimated 14 million Ukrainians have been displaced by the war, including nearly 6.5 million who fled or were forced out abroad.

Around 650,000 Russians have permanently relocated abroad since the start of the invasion in 2022, motivated by fears of draft or opposition to the war.

Iran manufactures indigenous laparoscopy trocars, saves foreign currency reserve

Iran Surgery Nurse Doctor

The director of the company, Sadegh Jangjoo, said Iran annually spends six million dollars to import the device designed for placement through the chest and abdominal walls during surgery, adding his company has managed to cater to 10 percent of the Iranian market’s needs.

Jangjoo said every year 13 million laparoscopic surgeries are performed in the world, and about half of the basic surgeries in Iran like, gallbladder and appendix surgeries, are carried out laparoscopically.

He said the achievement is significant as minimally invasive surgeries, such as hernia repair, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and removal of internal organs using laparoscopic method, are growing in the world.

The CEO of the knowledge-based company said, “The laparoscopic surgical trocar project was launched with the goal of acquiring a hundred percent technical knowledge of the product’s design as well as the construction and launch of a completely Iranian production line and assembly technology.”

Iran’s Leader deplores double standards exercised in 2024 Olympics, Paralympics

Ayatollah Khamenei

On Wednesday morning, in a meeting with members of Iran’s delegations to the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei stated that the decision-makers of the Paris Olympic competitions have demonstrated that biased attitude and double standards govern their actions.

He noted that they exclude a country from the competition under the pretext of initiating war, but do not ban the Zionist regime, which has massacred tens of thousands of people in Gaza.

Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the martyrdom of more than 41,000 Palestinians at the hands of the Zionist military forces in Gaza, including thousands of children, adding that this is a clear example of biased and double standards.

“This is by no means an exaggeration. It is a political act that has been imposed on sports. These double standards are imposed by the countries that dominate international sports affairs.”

The organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics banned Russia from the competition due to the Ukraine war, while Belarus, a close ally of Russia, was also excluded from the Olympics.Iranian athletes won 12 medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and 25 medals in the Paralympic Games.

Iran releases Austrian detainee on humanitarian grounds

Iran Prison

Nasser Atabati told the Tehran-based Mizan news agency, “Austrian citizen Christian Weber, imprisoned in West Azarbaijan province, was released from prison based on Islamic mercy.”

Weber was handed over to the Austrian Ambassador in Iran Wolf Dietrich Heim to make the arrangements for his return to his country.

Dietrich Heim expressed his gratitude to Iranian officials for the “humane and favorable” treatment of the Austrian citizen in prison.

Iranian officials did not specify the nature of Weber’s crime, but he was reportedly involved in the protests and deadly riots that broke in Iran in 2022 following the death of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.

Sanitary conditions in Gaza worsening daily: UNRWA

Gaza War

“Sanitary conditions in Gaza are worsening by the day. Insects and rodents can spread diseases, threatening people’s health and well-being,” UNRWA said in a post on X.

“UNRWA teams are working to help displaced families in shelters stop them from invading people’s already crammed living spaces,” it added.

Rubbish has been piling up across Gaza after Israel seized control of the territory’s two main landfills, east of the cities of Khan Younis and Gaza City.

The United Nations has announced the completion of the first phase of the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip. However, it warned that the risk of other diseases remains high due to unsanitary conditions.

Around 560,000 children under ten years old were vaccinated against polio during the first round of an emergency vaccination campaign conducted in three phases from 1-12 September 2024 in the Gaza Strip.

The original target for the campaign was 640,000 children, estimated in the absence of an accurate survey, which may have been an over-estimate, as the population continues to move from place to place, and people are fleeing and being killed due to the ongoing Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.

After the first confirmed polio case in Gaza in 25 years, a massive vaccination effort began.

A second round of the campaign will follow, ideally within four weeks, to provide a second dose of nOPV2 to children in Gaza to stop the outbreak and prevent its international spread.

Israel launched its military onslaught on Gaza after Hamas led an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing at least 1,200 people.

Promising to destroy Hamas, Israel launched an assault on Gaza, which has killed at least 41,200 people, mostly women and children, according to Palestinian officials.

Each country should decide if Ukraine can use its long-range missiles on Russia: NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been pleading with allies for months to let Ukraine fire Western missiles including long-range US ATACMS and British Storm Shadows deep into Russia to limit Moscow’s ability to launch attacks.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Joe Biden held talks in Washington on Friday on whether to allow Kyiv to use the long-range missiles against targets in Russia. No decision was announced.

“I welcome these developments and these decisions but its for individual allies to make the final decisions,” Stoltenberg told LBC radio.

“Allies have different policies on this.”

Some US officials are deeply skeptical that allowing the use of such missiles would make a significant difference in Kyiv’s battle against Russian invaders.

President Vladimir Putin has stressed the West would be directly fighting Russia if it allowed Ukraine to strike with Western-made long-range missiles.

Asked about possible Russian retaliation, Stoltenberg said there were “no risk-free options in the war”.

“But I continue to believe that the biggest risk for us, for United Kingdom, for NATO, will be if President Putin wins in Ukraine,” he added.

In an interview with Foreign Policy, livestreamed on its website, Stoltenberg said NATO will not become a party to the Ukrainian conflict if its member states authorize Kiev to strike at Russian territory with Western-made weapons.

“This is not correct when President Putin says that we will become party to the conflict,” Stoltenberg claimed.

He also added that NATO does not consider Iran and North Korea parties to the conflict over the alleged military aid to Moscow.

According to the Secretary General, NATO closely monitors what Russia is doing in its nuclear posture.

“So far, we haven’t seen any changes in their nuclear posture that require any changes from our side,” he continued, pointing out that there will be no winners in a nuclear war.

NATO allies have not yet reached a consensus on inviting Ukraine to the alliance, Stoltenberg added

“There can be no invitation for Ukraine until we have all allies agreeing. It requires consensus, and we don’t have that yet,” he said.

“In the long run, there can be no peace and security in Ukraine without Ukraine becoming a NATO ally.”

“If you want a quick end to this war <…> then military support for Ukraine is the way,” the official went on to say.

NATO allies announced at a summit in Washington in July that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is “irreversible”.

AEOI chief says Iran bent on nuclear development within IAEA framework

Mohammad Eslami

Mohammad Eslami made the remarks in a Monday meeting with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, which the Iranian nuclear chief described as positive and a step forward.

Eslami added Iran’s ties with the IAEA continue constantly and will not be tarnished by psychological pressures and demonization.

Regarding the issues about the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), the two sides agreed to re-schedule the programs involved and maintain constructive dialogues to resolve the problems in a way that meets Iran’s interests.

Grossi, in a message posted on X, referred to his meeting with Eslami, saying they agreed to have a mutual collaboration.

The IAEA chief also added he would visit Iran soon to hold important political and technical meetings.

UN rights experts say Israel to become a ‘pariah’ over Gaza ‘genocide’

Gaza War

On Monday, several independent UN experts decried what they said was Israel’s escalating violence and rights violations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, its disregard for international court rulings and its verbal attacks on the UN itself.

The rapporteurs, who are appointed by the UN Human Rights Council but who do not speak on behalf of the UN, also slammed Western countries’ “double standards” in the devastating war and said Israel needed to face consequences for its actions.

“I think it is unavoidable for Israel to become a pariah in the face of its continuous, relentless, vilifying assault of the United Nations, on top of millions of Palestinians,” said Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, citing verbal and military attacks on UN facilities in Gaza.

“Should there be a consideration of its membership as part of this organisation, which Israel seems to have zero respect for?”.

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza after more than 11 months of conflict has also prompted questions about Western states’ longstanding political and military support for Israel, including from the United States and the United Kingdom, which both provide arms.

“Shockingly, in the face of the abyss reached in [occupied Palestinian territory] … most member states remained inactive at best, or actively aiding and assisting Israel’s criminal conduct,” Albanese told a news conference in Geneva on Monday, repeating allegations of genocide.

Albanese, an Italian lawyer, added she was referring to Western states as well as some Persian Gulf nations and others.

Israel denies claims of genocide and claims that it takes steps to reduce the risk of harm to civilians and that at least a third of the 41,200 Palestinians killed in Gaza were fighters.

Israel’s permanent mission to the UN in Geneva criticised Albanese after her comments.

“She is not fit to hold any position at the United Nations, and this has been made clear by many,” it announced.

Albanese was joined by three other UN independent experts who accused Western states of hypocrisy and double standards, for example by being more vocal about human rights violations by Russia since its invasion of Ukraine than about Israel’s actions in the besieged enclave.

George Katrougalos, the UN special rapporteur on the promotion of democratic and equitable international order, also called for Israel to be held to the same standards as all countries. He condemned its repeated attacks on critical UN officials or agencies.

“We cannot anymore stand this kind of double standards and hypocrisy,” Katrougalos told reporters.

“I hope that it is not going to continue … I trust that the progressive and democratic citizens of Israel would not let their country become a pariah like South Africa had become during the times of apartheid.”

The experts are among dozens of independent human rights specialists mandated by the UN to report and advise on specific themes and crises. Their views do not reflect those of the global body as a whole.

Hamas head to Houthi chief: Missile strike sent a clear message to Israel

Yemen Attack Israel

“We thank the Yemeni Ansarullah [resistance] movement for its sincere passion, rich emotions and strong willpower to fight off the Israeli oppression,” Yahya Sinwar wrote in a message addressed to Houthi chief Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

“The Yemeni army’s operation reaching the depth of the Zionist entity and hitting the positions of the enemy have breathed new life into Operation al-Aqsa Storm and dealt a new blow to the Tel Aviv regime’s project in the region.”

The Hamas leader said the Yemeni army’s unprecedented operation bypassed all interception layers and systems of the Israeli regime.

“The Yemeni operation sent out a clear message to Israel that the schemes of containment and isolation have failed with pro-Palestine support fronts implementing a more effective and influential approach,” Sinwar added.

“The heroes of the beloved Yemeni army have improved their military capabilities. They have been able to increase the range of their missiles to reach the depth of the occupied Palestinian lands,” he noted.

The Hamas leader also saluted the Yemeni nation, stating that the people have been a staunch supporter of the Palestinians and their legitimate cause throughout history.

Weekly pro-Palestine rallies across Yemen are an obvious manifestation of the nation’s unwavering support for the Palestinian issue, he said.

“I assure you that the Resistance is doing fine. We have prepared ourselves to fight a long battle of attrition that will break the enemy’s political will, just as Operation al-Aqsa Storm broke its military will.”

“Our combined efforts with you and our brethren in the valiant Hezbollah resistance movement in Lebanon and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq will break this enemy and inflict defeat on it,” Sinwar added.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity.

The Houthis stressed that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza end.

So far, Israel has killed at least 41,220 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 95,400 others.
