Israel likely used US-made 900kg bombs in Nasrallah assassination: Report

Hezbollah Nasrallah

Citing three experts who analysed videos of Friday’s strikes, posted by the Israeli Air Force, the Post said on Sunday that at least some of the bombs were US-made “BLU-109s and JDAM guidance kits”.

BLU-109s are bunker-buster heavy bombs and JDAM kits are guidance systems that attach to munitions to help attack a specific target.

A 2,000-pound bomb has a destruction radius of 35 metres (115 feet), according to the Project on Defense Alternatives (PDA), which conducts defence policy research and analysis.

Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s longtime chief, was killed in Friday’s strike on the group’s underground headquarters. Israel dropped what local media said were “bunker-busting” bombs and flattened about six buildings, while trying to kill Nasrallah.

The attack also devastated the entire neighbourhood, turning several apartment buildings into rubble.

The Washington Post quoted NR Jenzen-Jones, the director of Armament Research Services – a group providing analysis on arms and munitions – as saying that “initial available videos of the strike show that numerous large air-delivered bombs were used”. He added that they were meant to penetrate through a “heavily protected space”.

US officials have repeatedly stated that they received no prior notice about Friday’s Israeli strikes in Lebanon. But US President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris have welcomed the assassination of Nasrallah, calling it a “measure of justice”.

The Biden administration has been facing increasing criticism from rights advocates over its unconditional arming of Israel, which has killed more than 41,500 people in Gaza and hundreds in Lebanon.

Washington stopped a single shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel earlier this year over concerns about their use in densely populated areas in Gaza. The Biden administration later approved the release of 500-pound (227 kg) bombs which were part of the same transfer.

Israel’s Ministry of Defense said on Thursday that it had secured an $8.7bn US military aid package – days after it launched a massive attack that killed hundreds of people in south Lebanon and Beirut and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Separately, the Pentagon said on Sunday that it has “increased the readiness of additional US forces to deploy” to the Middle East.

“The United States retains the capability to deploy forces on short notice,” the Pentagon announced in a statement.

“The Department of Defense continues to maintain a significant amount of capability in the region and to dynamically adjust our force posture based on the evolving security situation,” it added.

Later in the day, Biden said he would speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that an all-out war in the Middle East must be avoided.

“It has to be,” Biden told reporters as he boarded Air Force One for Washington. “We really have to avoid it.”

The president’s statements come as Israeli air strikes across Lebanon intensified on Sunday.

The Biden administration has maintained support for Israel and its attacks across the region as Washington continues to call for de-escalation.

President Pezeshkian vows ‘decisive’ response to Israel

Masoud Pezeshkian Nasrallah

Addressing a cabinet session on Sunday, Pezeshkian once again strongly condemned Israel’s assassination of Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime leader of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, in a massive airstrike on southern Beirut on Friday using American-supplied bunker-buster bombs.

“This crime once again proved that this criminal regime does not adhere to any of the international principles and rules,” he said.

He added that Israel’s criminal acts are not “unacceptable” and will not go unanswered.

He emphasized that historical experience showed that freedom-seeking and awakening movements will not disappear with the assassination of their figures.

“Dozens more people are ready to raise the flag of anti-tyranny and anti-justice,” the Iranian president said.

He added that inaction on crimes committed by Israel, the US and their allies will only encourage them to carry out more criminal acts.

Pezeshkian stressed the importance of supporting the Hezbollah fighters in their war with Israel to prevent the atrocious regime from attacking countries of the axis of resistance and killing innocent women and children.

He reiterated the heavy responsibility of Arab and Muslim countries in the face of the Israeli regime’s brutal aggression in the region.

He said, “Muslim countries should not be indifferent to the Israeli regime’s criminality because it has been proven to all nations across the world who is the main criminal and the cause of war, insecurity and murder in the world!”

The Iranian chief executive also lashed out at Western media outlets for pursuing contradictory attitude to Israel’s terrorism and noted that they “magnify the smallest events in Iran” but remain silent vis-à-vis the Israeli regime’s criminal acts.

He further said Iran’s Health Ministry and all relief bodies are fully prepared to help victims of the recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Israel’s attacks come against the backdrop of escalated tensions between the Lebanese resistance movement and the occupying entity, which included the targeted killing of top Hezbollah commanders and the detonation of telecommunication devices belonging to the Muslim resistance group.

Israel has been targeting Lebanon since October 7 last year, when it launched a genocidal war on the besieged Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah has been responding to the aggression with numerous retaliatory operations, including one with a hypersonic ballistic missile, targeting the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Lebanese resistance movement has vowed to keep up its operations against Israel as long as the Israeli regime continues its Gaza war.

Fmr. Iranian envoy to Lebanon: Full-scale war imminent if Zionists continue tensions

Lebanon War

Speaking to Entekhab news outlet, Ahmad Dastmalchian said, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s malevolence must be curbed. The inevitable outcome of this instability is regional insecurity.

About Iran’s potential response to Israel following the assassination of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Dastmalchian affirmed, “Iran will undoubtedly respond on this basis, and in the coming days, the form of that response will be revealed. This war is a hybrid one, and Iran will respond with precise and intelligent calculations.”

Regarding Hezbollah’s fate following Nasrallah’s assassination, Dastmalchian said Hezbollah is a solid organization with extensive experience since 1982. We have witnessed the martyrdom of previous Hezbollah leaders, but it did not affect the struggle’s trajectory. These strikes may have short-term impacts, but an organization with the support of all Lebanon will not be deterred in the long run.

Regarding Nasrallah’s potential successor, Dastmalchian stated, “Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was a scholarly and organizational figure. Hezbollah’s robust structure owes much to his leadership and that of his colleagues. While it is not yet clear who will succeed him, someone close to him will certainly carry forward his legacy.”

IRGC Quds Force commander says Iran to stand by Resistance Front till liberation of Palestine

Brigadier General Esmaeil Ghaani

In a message of condolence over the martyrdom of Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of the Hezbollah movement, Brigadier General Qa’ani said the noble martyr dedicated his life to fighting with the devil enemy of Islam and Quran.

He added the late Hezbollah chief was martyred in the path of the lofty causes of Islam and supporting the oppressed Palestinian nation and the dignity of the Lebanese nation.

He highlighted Nasrallah’s leadership of the resistance movement of Hezbollah in fighting Takfiri groups like Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

The IRGC commander extended his condolences to the Resistance Front, including Hezbollah, and the distinguished family of the late leader Nasrallah, adding the Islamic Republic will keep being with the resistance forces.

Assassination of Nasrallah to accelerate Israel’s demise: Iran

Nasrallah Hezbollah

Seyyed Abbas Araghhchi made the remarks on Sunday at the end of his visit to New York, where he attended the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking to Iranian reporters, he offered condolences over the martyrdom of “the great resistance commander”, saying his blood will increase the power of Hezbollah.

“Definitely, this martyrdom is a great loss, but it will not cause any disruption in the resilience,” he added.

“With what it did first in Gaza and then in Lebanon, the Zionist regime will certainly have no future in the region. It will never see peace. The natural outcome … is the acceleration of the Zionist regime’s demise.”

The minister also noted that Iran views the United States as a “partner” in the Israeli crime, expressing dismay at the UN Security Council’s inability to resolve current problems.

Furthermore, the top Iranian diplomat stated that he had reminded the UN chief of his responsibility to lead the international community in stopping Israel’s atrocities.

On Friday, Israel assassinated Nasrallah in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh at the culmination of its intensified acts of terror and aggression in Lebanon over the past two weeks.

Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging deadly fire since early October, shortly after the regime launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

Over the past year, Israeli attacks have killed at least 1,640 Lebanese people and injured 8,408 others.

Following Nasrallah’s assassination, Hezbollah vowed in a statement that it will “continue its fight to confront the enemy in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defense of Lebanon and its steadfast and honorable people.”

Sources say body of Hezbollah chief recovered from site of Israeli attack

Lebanon War

The body of Nasrallah has been recovered from the site of an Israeli air raid on Beirut’s southern suburbs and is intact, a medical source and a security source have told Reuters on Sunday.

While Hezbollah’s statement on Saturday confirming Nasrallah’s death did not say how exactly he was killed nor when his funeral would be, the two sources said his body had no direct wounds.

They added that it appeared the cause of his death was blunt trauma from the force of the blast.

Hezbollah confirms death of two senior figures

Lebanon War

Hezbollah has announced that senior military commander Ali Karaki was killed in the large Israeli airstrikes on Dahiyeh, the southern suburbs of Beirut, on Friday.

These are the same attacks that killed Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Karaki was a member of the group’s Jihad Council and the commander of the organisation’s southern front. He had escaped death a few days prior, after Israel announced it attempted to assassinate him in an airstrike on Dahieh last Monday.

“[Karaki] was directly and on the ground responsible for leading the southern front with all its axes and units in the support front from 8 October, 2023, until his blessed martyrdom”, a statement from Hezbollah read announcing his death.

Karaki was the latest in a series of military commanders to be killed by Israel, leaving Hezbollah’s senior military leadership almost completely wiped out.

Hezbollah has also confirmed that Nabil Kaouk, another of its senior leaders, was killed in an Israeli air raid.

The Israeli military announced earlier Sunday that it had killed Kaouk in an airstrike the day before.

He is the seventh senior leader of the Lebanese group to be killed since Sept. 20.

Report: Israel to invade Lebanon following assassination of Hezbollah leader

Israeli Army

On Wednesday, the IDF chief of staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, announced a potential ground operation in the neighboring state as he talked to troops stationed at Israel’s northern border.

Airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon over the past week were aimed at preparing the area “for the possibility of your entry”, the general told the troops.

According to Halevi, Israel was still seeking to return displaced residents from the northern regions to their homes.

“To do this, we are preparing the [ground] maneuver,” the general added, without revealing a time frame for the operation.

“You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure,” Halevi said, claiming that Hezbollah has turned villages into “large military outposts, with underground infrastructure, staging points, and launch pads into our territory”.

Israel and Hezbollah have sporadically exchanged fire over the past year, as the latter has supported the Palestinian cause in light of the regime’s military operation against Hamas.

Israel drastically escalated its campaign against the Lebanese group earlier this month, wounding thousands in a sabotage operation targeting the group’s handheld communication devices and subsequently bombarding southern Lebanon with airstrikes.

The ABC report came just a day after Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting what was described as the group’s main headquarters in a southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The group confirmed its leader’s death early Saturday. No successor to Nasrallah has been named.

Israel stated later on Saturday that almost all of Hezbollah’s military leaders had been eliminated. It also shared a list of a dozen top commanders killed over the past few weeks.

Around 1 million people displaced in recent Israeli attacks in Lebanon

Lebanon War

“More than 100,000 have been officially registered, but many more — up to 250,000 — are estimated to be in formal and informal collective shelters,” Nasser Yassin, head of the Lebanon Crisis Observatory, told CNN on Saturday.

“We estimate four times as many have been directly affected and/or displaced outside the shelters,” Yassin, who serves as the country’s environment minister, added.

The Lebanese minister of health has also reported that the death toll since the Israel-Lebanon conflict began on October 8 of last year has risen to at least 1,640, with more than 8,408 people wounded.

The minister highlighted that many people remain trapped under the rubble, with missing people and dismembered bodies still being recovered.

Among those killed by Israeli strikes are 104 children and 194 women. Additionally, 41 health and ambulance workers have been killed and 111 others have been injured since the onset of the war.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has reported widespread trauma among Lebanon’s displaced population, stemming from relentless bombardment and the uncertainty of ongoing Israeli raids.

Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, shared his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), urging the international community to ensure the “protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure” amid Israel’s continued airstrikes on Lebanon.

“We have opened seven shelters for the displaced, currently hosting 1,600 people, including Lebanese, Palestinians, and Syrians,” Lazzarini posted.

The recent attacks are part of the Israeli regime’s intensified assault on Lebanon, which has become more deadly in recent days.

US mulls dispatching further troops to West Asia

US Troops

According to two unnamed US officials, the military has presented Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin with options for moving additional forces to the region. The defense secretary later reportedly discussed the change of posture with US President Joe Biden and national security officials. The outlet said that while no immediate decisions were made, Austin has the authority to send in additional forces.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon already moved to reinforce its military presence in the Middle East as tensions between Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel were soaring. There are currently around 40,000 US troops in the region, including over a dozen warships.

US officials told the network that the Pentagon considers these forces adequate for the potential challenges, but could extend some current deployments or make adjustments in air defense and other capabilities. The US is also prepared to support an emergency evacuation of American civilians from the region if necessary, the article said.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated on Saturday after Israel conducted an airstrike on a Hezbollah compound in Beirut, killing Nasrallah. Israeli officials also claim to have wiped out nearly all of Hezbollah’s military leaders over the past few weeks.

Following Nasrallah’s assassination, Hezbollah pledged to continue “its jihad in confronting the enemy, in support of Gaza and Palestine”.
