Majority of Americans think US takeover of Gaza ‘bad idea’: Survey

Gaza War

Forty-seven percent of those polled aren’t in favour of the US president’s plan, while only 13 percent think it is a “good idea”. Forty percent pf people responded that they were not sure, or that it depends.

Meanwhile, 54 percent of the people polled said they approved of Trump’s handling of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Trump has stated the US will “take over” and “own” Gaza after resettling Palestinians elsewhere under an extraordinary redevelopment plan that he claimed could turn the enclave into “the Riviera of the Middle East”.

In a shock announcement upending decades of US policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Trump said on Tuesday that his administration would spearhead development in the enclave to “supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area”.

“The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it,” Trump said at the White House after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, adding that his administration would take responsibility for clearing destroyed buildings and dismantling “dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons”.

Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs Gaza, swiftly condemned the proposal as a “recipe for creating chaos and tension in the region”.

“Our people in the Gaza Strip will not allow these plans to pass,” the group announced in a statement.

“What is required is an end to the occupation and aggression against our people, not their expulsion from their land. Our people in Gaza have thwarted displacement and deportation plans under bombardment for more than 15 months.”

At least 110 Palestinians killed by Israeli military in Gaza since ceasefire: Report

Gaza War

That means at least six victims per day, including both new ones who were killed directly by the Israeli army, along with those who succumbed to their prior wounds after Israel denied them the right to travel abroad for treatment.

More than 900 others have been injured since the ceasefire, averaging 47 injuries per day, the Geneva-based organisation added.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed a confirmed nearly 48,200 people and injured 111,640, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The Government Media Office has updated the death toll to at least 61,700 people, saying thousands who were missing under the rubble are now presumed dead.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November last year for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

Iranian envoy in Kabul: Water rights issue between Afghanistan, Iran resolved

Iran water share

Bigdeli said that Afghan officials assured their cooperation in addressing water-related challenges in Sistan and Baluchestan province, bordering Afghanistan, based on Islamic principles and brotherly relations.

He further stated that during the recent visit of Iran’s foreign minister to Kabul, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the existing water treaty.

The Taliban had been refusing to allow Iran’s share of water from Hirmand, known as Helmand in Afghanistan, to stream into Iran, blaming drought and technical issues for the low supply of water.

Iran says Afghanistan must adhere to the terms of the internationally-binding 1973 Hirmand river water treaty and provide its share of water from the river.

Bigdeli also emphasized that expanding economic relations with Afghanistan remains a priority for Iran, noting that trade between the two countries has exceeded $2 billion over the past nine months.

He highlighted Iran’s efforts in facilitating trade and cultural exchanges to strengthen bilateral ties.

Iran to build yellowcake production plant: Atomic energy official

Iran nuclear programe

Seyyed Javad Ahmadi, Deputy Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), made the announcement during the launch of uranium extraction and processing at the General Qassem Soleimani Mining and Industrial Complex (Saghand) in the province of Yazd.

Ahmadi highlighted the strategic importance of the Saghand mining complex, describing it as a region rich in radioactive materials and associated elements that can drive advancements in both the nuclear and mining industries.

He revealed that the extraction project, initiated in collaboration with Chadormalu Mining and Industrial Company, includes an estimated 40 million tons of radioactive materials, iron ore, and other valuable minerals. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a yellowcake production facility with an annual capacity of 20 tons.

Ahmadi further emphasized the economic benefits of the project, noting that mining activities in the region will create approximately 700 job opportunities, significantly contributing to local employment and industrial development.

Kremlin keeps mum on reported contacts between Putin and Trump

Kremlin

Earlier, The New York Post wrote that Trump had reported discussing a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine with Putin by telephone.

Responding to a question from TASS whether Putin and Trump had a telephone conversation after the inauguration of the American leader, the Kremlin official replied: “What can be said about this news: as the administration in Washington unfolds its work, many different communications arise. These communications are conducted through different channels. And of course, amid the multiplicity of these communications, I personally may not know something, be unaware of something. Therefore, in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny it.”

Trump has expressed his desire and readiness to talk with Putin many times in recent weeks. However, no official reports of any contacts have been made. Putin’s last conversation with Trump, information about which is available on the Kremlin website, was dated July 23, 2020.

The head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky said that work on preparing such contacts “is at an advanced stage.”

Peskov later explained that Russia and the United States have not yet begun discussing a possible meeting between the Russian and American leaders.

The Kremlin Spokesman had stated that the Kremlin would inform about the progress of organizing contacts as substantive information becomes available.

Israeli soldiers complete withdrawal from Gaza’s Netzarim Corridor

Israeli Army

The Israeli army has withdrawn from the Netzarim Corridor in the Gaza Strip as part of a ceasefire accord with the Palestinian group Hamas.

Israel created the so-called Netzarim Corridor in the early days of the war in Gaza. The closed-off military zone is approximately 6km (3.7 miles) wide and cuts off northern Gaza from the rest of the enclave.

The Palestinian group running Gaza has announced that the complete withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Netzarim Corridor signals a “continuation of the failure of the goals of the war of extermination against the Palestinian people”.

Hamas said in a statement that the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes and the ongoing exchange of captives and prisoners refutes Benjamin Netanyahu’s “lie” about achieving victory in the enclave.

“Gaza will remain a land liberated by the hands of its people and its fighters, and forbidden to the occupying invaders and any external force,” it added.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed a confirmed 48,181 people and injured 111,638, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The Government Media Office has updated the death toll to at least 61,709 people, saying thousands who were missing under the rubble are now presumed dead.

Baltic states disconnected from Russia’s power grid

“This legacy of occupation meant that Moscow – which uses energy as a weapon – had control of the frequency,” the ministry said in a statement on X.

“That’s a critical element in maintaining reliable power supply. That dependency ends today!”

The Lithuanian Energy Ministry announced in July 2024 that the Baltic countries would fully synchronize with the continental European electricity grid in February 2025.

Earlier in February, Latvian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas said in an interview that his country is ready for technical difficulties and possible sabotages during the synchronization process.

Ukraine also disconnected itself from the Russian energy grid in February 2022, when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion.

“We stopped buying electricity & gas from Russia right after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” the Estonian Foreign Ministry announced in its statement.

“By making our whole energy system independent of Russia, the Kremlin loses another lever of power to use against Europe,” it added.

The Russian Mission to the bloc has announced that the decision of Baltic nations to disconnect themselves from the unified energy system with Russia and Belarus will only worsen the economic prospects for the EU, stressing that the move is politically motivated.

“Disconnecting from the BRELL is a politically motivated move that will drive up regional electricity prices, make power grids less reliable, and further erode the EU’s economic competitiveness,” the mission said on Telegram, emphasizing that European households and businesses, primarily in the Baltic countries, will bear the costs.

The mission added that the EU economy demonstrated “meager” growth of only 0.8% last year, and highlighted that the continued drive to break energy ties with Moscow would only worsen its prospects.

Iran strongly condemns US-Israeli plan for forced displacement of Gazans as colonial conspiracy

Gaza War

Araghchi discussed and exchanged views with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, as part of his intensive phone consultations on Saturday evening on the developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and the dangerous joint plot by the Israeli regime and the US for the forced displacement of the Palestinian people.

The Iranian foreign minister condemned the disgraceful US-Zionist plan for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza and the elimination of Palestine, emphasizing the necessity of adopting a coordinated and unified stance by the Islamic community to thwart the nefarious scheme.

Araghchi reiterated the grave responsibility of Islamic countries to support the legitimate and fundamental rights of the oppressed Palestinian people, particularly the right to self-determination and to live safely on their own land.

He added that the forced displacement plan of Palestinians from Gaza is not only a great crime equivalent to “genocide,” but also poses dangerous consequences for the stability and security of the region and the world.

The Iranian foreign minister urged the OIC to promptly hold an extraordinary meeting with the participation of the foreign ministers of member states to make a decisive and effective decision to defend the rightful rights of the Palestinian people.

Referring to his intensive talks on Saturday with the foreign ministers of some Arab and Islamic countries, Araghchi asked the OIC secretary general to make maximum efforts to hold a meeting of the organization’s foreign ministers as soon as possible.

For his part, the OIC head condemned the crimes committed against the Palestinian people, rejecting the conspiracy of forced displacement of the people of Gaza as completely unacceptable and invalid.

Taha welcomed the proposal by the Islamic Republic of Iran to hold an extraordinary consultative meeting of the OIC member states’ foreign ministers and stated that he would hold talks with the member states of the organization on the matter.

Oil minister: US will fail to reduce Iran oil exports to zero

Iran Oil Tanker

Mohsen Paknejad made the assertion in response to a recent executive order signed by US President Donald Trump aimed at completely cutting Iran’s oil exports.

“This is a dream for them, and they will never achieve it,” Mohsen Paknejad stated, referring to the U.S. efforts pertaining to the so-called maxumum pressure campaign against Iran.

He emphasized that the maximum pressure policy has already been tested and failed, and repeating it would yield the same results.

The minister highlighted that Iran’s oil industry experts are prepared to implement sophisticated measures to counteract increasing restrictions. “The more limitations imposed on us, the more complex the measures we will adopt,” he said.

Paknejad also pointed to Iran’s self-sufficiency in the oil and gas sector, noting that despite foreign companies leaving the country, Iranian professionals have successfully managed the complex operations from upstream to downstream.

“Today, we have achieved self-reliance in equipment production and the development of oil and gas fields, and the industry is largely managed domestically,” he added.

Riyadh condemns Netanyahu’s remarks on Palestinian relocation to Saudi Arabia

Gaza War

In an official statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its “categorical rejection” of such rhetoric, emphasizing that “the Palestinian people have a right to their land, and they are not intruders or immigrants to it who can be expelled whenever the brutal Israeli occupation wishes.”

The kingdom also stated that “this extremist, occupying mentality does not understand what the Palestinian land means to the brotherly people of Palestine,” and asserted that Israel “does not think that the Palestinian people deserve to live in the first place.”

“The proponents of these extremist ideas are the ones who prevented Israel from accepting peace,” the ministry added, emphasizing that Israel has been “systematically practicing injustice towards the Palestinian people for more than 75 years.”

Reiterating its commitment to a peaceful resolution, Saudi Arabia asserted that “the right of the Palestinian People will remain firmly established and no one will be able to take it away from them no matter how long it takes.”

“Lasting peace will not be achieved except by returning to the logic of reason and accepting the principle of peaceful coexistence through the two-state solution,” it noted.

On Thursday, Netanyahu suggested that Palestinians should establish their state in Saudi Arabia rather than in their own homeland, dismissing any notion of Palestinian sovereignty.

“The Saudis can create a Palestinian state in Saudi Arabia; they have a lot of land over there,” he stated.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Washington would “take over” Gaza and resettle Palestinians elsewhere under an extraordinary redevelopment plan that he claimed could turn the enclave into “the Riviera of the Middle East.”

His proposal was met with wide condemnations from the Palestinians, Arab countries, and many other nations across the world, including Canada, France, Germany, and the UK.
