VP Orders Enhancement of Ties with Indian Ocean Littoral States

“The executive agencies should put the promotion of economic cooperation with Indian Ocean littoral states on their agenda,” Jahangiri said. “We should sign cooperation agreements with the countries in the region.”

He said that by linking the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Oman, we can provide the Makran region with a golden opportunity for development.

The Makran region is a semi-desert coastal strip in Pakistan and Iran, along the coast of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Referring to estimates about the rise of the East and decline of the West in terms of economics, he said that despite the opposition of a few regional countries regarding furthering ties with Tehran and other littoral states of the Indian Ocean, Iran should go on with expanding its relations with regional countries, including India.

The Vice President highlighted the first Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Free Trade Zone Authorities meeting held recently in the Iranian port city of Chabahar, and expressed his hope that the Chabahar agreement inked between Tehran, Kabul and New Delhi will help expand trade between Iran and regional states.

He urged all the governmental agencies to develop Chabahar’s infrastructure, including the region’s railroads.

Larijani: Parliament is a Centre for Defending Nation’s Rights

Referring to the critical situation in the region, Larijani said that the Majlis should safeguard the nation’s rights.

At his first address to the chamber after being elected as interim speaker of the new Iranian Parliament on Sunday May 29, Larijani said that the Majlis must make efforts to remove economic problems in a scientific way.

“Iran is the true scene of religious democracy,” he said, referring to the February 26 elections across the country.

The new Iranian Parliament started work on Saturday May 28. In Sunday’s session, Larijani was elected as the interim Speaker of Majlis with 173 votes in his favour.

Parviz Kalantari’s Lost City

Parviz Kalantari: “I was asked what type of a city is an Iranian city. I replied, ‘A city with a poet sitting behind each one of its windows.’”

There are very few who can specialize in one artform but still collaborate with other major ones. In this land, a musician usually stays a musician and has nothing to do with graphics or architecture, a painter remains a painter and doesn’t come into contact with literature and stories, a filmmaker doesn’t touch poetry and fantasy, while a poet writes independently of, let’s say, photography or animation. Worse than that, however, is when they all have no mutual understanding of each other and their mutual perspectives on the world. They all live in their lonely artistic cottages, as if on an abandoned archipelago, remaining the silent observers of their own universe.

In a world like this, how many years must pass until someone like Parviz Kalantari comes along, becoming the painter of his homeland’s desert landscapes, being inspired by Iran’s geography, someone acquisitive, different, and deeply loyal to the painting of local elements? If we want to highlight a constant element in Kalantari’s work, undoubtedly Iranian architecture is the most significant one. Kalantari, however, is not merely trying to represent the architecture. He sees the world around him through his own specific ideology. We can understand this better in his own words:

“I want to be loyal to my country’s native elements, because these elements define my identity. The question for an artist is “Who am I? Where am I standing? And how do I look at the world?”

Kalantari

“After the UNESCO project on Iranian cities through the eyes of an Iranian painter, they put my painting on the wall and unveiled it. I was immediately asked what type of a city is an Iranian city. I replied, ‘A city with a poet sitting behind each one of its windows.’”

Kalantari3

“Today, the geography of the country has changed so much that there is no sign of the old one. Towns have sprouted everywhere like mushrooms, towns with no identities. Our villages are defined by their own cultures and languages, and have their own environments, but the new cities and towns lack these characteristics.”

“My narration of this city is the narration of an old man who suffers a little bit from forgetfulness, and doesn’t recognize his city anymore. There’s so much building going on that he doesn’t recognize the streets and alleys anymore. The urban environment has become a stranger to him.”

Parviz Kalantari, the Iranian painter, designer, writer and journalist was one of Iran’s modernists. He was a world-famous artist and his painting “Iranian City” decorated the wall of the UN building. Another of his artworks was printed as a UN postage stamp. He pioneered a new technique in Iranian visual art by using thatch in his paintings. Kalantari passed away on May 20, 2016, after a long illness.

Persian Language Promotion in Portugal to Help Diplomatic Ties: Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif highlighted the existing conditions for developing relations between Iran and Portugal, saying that one way to bolster bilateral ties is to promote Persian language teaching in the European country.

“The Saadi Foundation is responsible for propagating Persian language outside of Iran, and I believe it can be active in Lisbon as well,” he said.

The Iranian diplomat further underscored tourism and economic cooperation as other potential areas for expanding relations. “In the economic field, settling banking issues is of high importance, and we expect further measures to be taken in this regard so that companies and banks can easily resume their activities with Iran,” he said.

The Portuguese minister, for his part, stressed the importance of language courses in both countries, adding Lisbon is keen on having its companies participate in Iranian projects.

SAIPA Signs $1bn Finance Deal with South Koran Company

Speaking to IRNA, Baghaei said that, following preliminary talks between the two sides, the deal was signed on Friday. The South Korean company is to finance SAIPA’s purchase of $1bn worth of spare parts in complete knock-down (CKD), he explained.

Talks between the two companies on joint venture investments are now underway, he said. SAIPA has recently placed a $250,000 order for purchasing auto-parts from the South Korean company, he reported.

During the recent visit of the South Korean president to Iran, 19 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on the broadening of mutual economic cooperation were inked between the two countries.

Iran and Algeria Seek to Widen Bilateral Ties

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal visited Iran’s booth at the 49th International Exhibition of Algeria. Over 810 foreign and local companies from 33 countries are taking part in the exhibition.

In a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Algeria Reza Ameri, Sellal stressed the desire of the two countries to develop bilateral ties in the shortest possible time.

He also emphasized establishing a production line for Iran’s Saipa automobiles.

Ameri, for his part, expressed his hope that Iran’s technical and engineering service exports to Algeria would increase greatly.

Five Iranian trade and commercial institutions are taking part in the event.

President: Any Political Inclinations from IRIB Unacceptable

Any type of IRIB activity in support of any political side is unacceptable, President Rouhani told the new IRIB Director Abdolali Ali-Askari in a meeting on Saturday May 28.

President Rouhani praised the IRIB’s role in creating national unity and mobilizing people during the years of the Holy Defense (the 8 years of the Iran-Iraq War) and in the post-war reconstruction period.

The IRIB, being the sole national media, has a great responsibility in deepening trust and promoting ties between people and the establishment, Rouhani said.

He noted that the government respects the independence of the IRIB, but at the same time it wants the IRIB activities to be under serious supervision of the three branches of the state (legislative, judicial and executive powers).

Noting that sowing discord is a hostile plot, the President said that polarizing Iranian society is contrary to the views maintained by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Rouhani called the IRIB a national organization which has a duty to provide the public with information free from bias towards any political wing, and concluded, “I do not want the IRIB to play the role of a government public relations office branch, but the organization should be careful not to disillusion people about government activities.”

Large Group of Iranian Prisoners Extradited from Kuwait

The extradition took place on the basis of a judicial agreement between Tehran and Kuwait City and diplomatic talks over the past two years, Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced.

The number of prisoners being simultaneously extradited to Iran marked the largest transfer of convicts to Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran and Kuwait have already signed an extradition treaty, which allows Iranian prisoners in Kuwait and Kuwaiti inmates in Iran to return to their respective countries and complete their prison terms at home.
