Theatre Performance Inspired by Albert Camus to Take the Stage in Tehran

An adaptation of a 1948 play entitled The State of Siege, by French-Algerian philosopher, author, and journalist Albert Camus (1913-1960), the play is in three acts presenting the arrival of plague, personified by a young opportunist, in Cadiz (port city in southwestern Spain) and the subsequent creation of a totalitarian regime through the manipulation of fear.
“I made changes to the script, but have kept the entire plot,” said Salehi, adding that the adapted version has less dialogue and “is more strongly focused on the acts and motions,” Mehr reported.
In addition to the play, Salehi is also studying another of Camus work The Plague (1947), a novel which narrates the same story, “in order to present a complete perspective of the events.”
“The idea came about when I was working on the biomechanical acting technique of Vsevolod Meyerhold (Russian theatre director, actor and producer) with my students. I decided to work on the play based on the mechanical technique, highlighting the motions in performance.”
He trained his students for several months and finally chose the best 14 from them, who perfectly understood physical movement, solfege (music pitch) and rhythm. The exact dates of the staging will be announced soon.

Kambiz Mirkarimi, commercial and executive manager of JPC, said to Shana on Monday June 13 that the company’s customers have diversified in the post-sanctions era.

JPC has already kicked off exporting products to Germany, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia, Greece and Bulgaria, he added.

The official referred to the lower cost of shipping the products to Asian countries, as well as the banking problems, saying that Turkey and Asian markets are still more attractive for JPC in comparison to European markets.

German-based BASF petrochemical company has opened an office in Tehran and JPC is in talks with some other European and Japanese companies to resume cooperation, he added.

Mirkarimi said that since US citizens have become shareholders of some European suppliers of petrochemical equipment, JPC has faced problems in reviving cooperation with some European companies.

Signs of Hope Emerge in Housing Market

Discussing the latest Central Bank of Iran reports suggesting a rise in home sales and whether or not this could translate into a tangible momentum for the key market, Ali Chegini told ILNA that it indeed is good news for the market.

“But we should take note of the fact that the economy is an interconnected network and its components cannot operate individually and independently. So if a change occurs in one part, it will gradually affect the other parts,” he said.

Referring to official figures, Chegini added that nearly 15,400 home sales were registered last month in Tehran, which shows an 8% growth. He compared the figure with previous records, which “at the height of recession stood at 7,000, while the number had reached 20,000 before in boom times.”

“Housing can be a driver of growth”, he continued, saying that the process of handing out Housing Savings Account mortgages had started. The special Housing Savings Account, launched in June 2015, aims to provide first-time homebuyers with loans at 14% interest. The scheme requires applicants to make an initial deposit and wait for a year to become eligible for the mortgage.

However, according to a modification in the scheme made a few months after it was announced, the lender allowed first-time homebuyers to integrate their previous mortgage application with the Housing Savings Account to shorten the waiting period by almost half.

As to what his predictions are for the housing market in the first and second half of the current fiscal year (started March 20), Chegini said sales would be rather slow-footed in the holy month of Ramadan, but with the school year starting (at the end of summer), “We will reach the peak of deals in the rental market.”

From the second half onward, he said, gradual and steady growth in the housing sector can be expected.  “At the moment, the money of most builders is locked up because of the extended recession, but with the rise in deals and in turnover, capital will be freed and builders can embark on new ventures.”

The ISIS terrorist group claimed responsibility for the shooting in an official broadcast on its Albayan Radio.

With 77 scheduled weekly flights, Bushehr International Airport is currently connected to Mashhad, Tehran, Isfahan and Ahvaz as well as Kharg and Sirri islands in the Persian Gulf. Occasional outbound flights are also operated to Russia and Southeast Asian countries.

Death Penalty Commuted to Life Sentence for 7 Prisoners: Judiciary

Ejei

“Within the past three months, 7 of those [drug traffickers] sentenced to death have repented [of their crimes], […] and it was proved that they are really regretful,” Ejei said, as reported by ISNA and translated by IFP.

“They cooperated in every way with the Judiciary, and informed on other criminals active in the field,” he said.

They had been active in cultural, educational, and vocational activities inside the prison, and had even memorized a number of chapters from the holy Qur’an, Ejei noted.

It became clear to the Judiciary that they were totally repentant of their crimes, and based on the requests of Judiciary chiefs, their sentences were commuted from the death penalty to life sentences.

Near 35 Tons of Illicit Drugs Seized in Past 3 Months

Mohsen Ejei further noted that 34,646kg of various illegal drugs have been seized by the Iranian Police within the first three months of the new Persian year, which began on March 20.

“936kg of heroin, 88kg of methamphetamine, and 168kg of crack were among the drugs seized within this period of time,” the Judiciary spokesman said, adding that more than 1,000kg of the confiscated drugs were considered very dangerous.

“If such a huge amount of drugs was distributed across the country, they would cause many problems for people, and especially the youth,” he noted.

He noted that “Iran sentences drug traffickers to death, but so-called advocates of human rights protest about the efforts made against these people [criminals].”
