Netanyahu seeking to dismiss head of Shin Bet over lack of ‘trust’

In a statement from Netanyahu’s office on Sunday, the prime minister said he has had an “ongoing distrust” for Ronen Bar and that trust in the head of the domestic security service is crucial at a time of war.

According to Israeli media, the vote to dismiss the Shin Bet chief is expected to take place in a special cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

But in a statement, Bar stated while he took “responsibility for the agency’s part” in failing to prevent the October 7 2023, Hamas attack that sparked the war in the Gaza Strip, it was “clear that the intent behind my dismissal is not related” to it.

“The prime minister’s expectation of a personal loyalty that contradicts the public interest is an entirely improper expectation,” Bar added.

Israeli Democrat Party chief Yair Golan also slammed the move to dismiss Bar and wrote on X that “Netanyahu declared war on the State of Israel.”

“The dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet is a desperate attempt by a criminal defendant to get rid of someone who is loyal to Israel and who is investigating Netanyahu and his close circle for serious and dark offences and is not willing to whitewash them,” Golan said.

“The dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet will not pass as if nothing happened. There will be tremendous resistance, we will fight with force and will not allow Netanyahu to turn the State of Israel into a dictatorship of a corrupt man,” he added.

The decision to dismiss Bar comes after an angry dispute between the two, which focused on who bears responsibility for October 7.

The Shin Bet, which is responsible for monitoring Palestinian armed groups, recently issued a report accepting responsibility for its failures in the attack, which is seen in Israel as the worst security failure that led to its single deadliest day, with 1,200 people killed and 251 taken captive, according to an Israeli tally.

However, the organisation also criticised Netanyahu for failed government policies that helped create the moment that led to the attack.

Still, the prime minister has also resisted calls for an official state commission inquiry into the events of October 7.

Moreover, the decision to dismiss Bar follows several senior Israeli officials who were in charge during the Hamas attack being forced to step down, including former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and army chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi.

The tensions boiled over this weekend when Bar’s predecessor, Nadav Argaman, said he would release sensitive information about Netanyahu if it is found that the prime minister had broken the law.

Netanyahu accused Argaman of blackmail and filed a police complaint.

Iran’s former Central Bank officials cleared of currency manipulation charges

Valiollah Seif

The decision, announced by Hessamoddin Ashna on Sunday on X social media platform, a former advisor to ex-president Hassan Rouhani, marks the end of a years-long legal battle.

Ashna criticized those who tarnished their reputations, emphasizing the importance of accountability.

The case, which began in 2018, accused Seif and Araghchi of disrupting Iran’s currency market and facilitating illegal foreign exchange transactions worth $159.8 million and €20.5 million during their tenure.

Both officials were initially sentenced to 10 and 8 years in prison. However, the Supreme Court later overturned the verdict in 2023, citing insufficient evidence and noting that their actions were authorized by higher authorities, including the president and the Supreme National Security Council, to stabilize the currency market.

The controversy stemmed from the Central Bank’s intervention in the “futures currency market” during a period of economic instability in 2017.

Critics argued that the actions lacked legal authority, accusing the officials of mismanagement and corruption, while supporters argued that their actions were necessary to control market volatility during a period of intense economic pressure from US sanctions.

Death toll from US attacks on Yemen rises to 53: Houthis

The Houthi-run Ministry of Health, which is not internationally recognized, said the dead included five children and two women, while nine children and nine women were among the wounded.

In a televised statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group retaliated by targeting the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and its accompanying warships in the northern Red Sea with 18 ballistic and winged missiles and a drone.

Saree linked the attack to the US’s launch of over 47 airstrikes on Yemen on Saturday, which marked the first US military action there since a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas took effect in January.

The Houthis warned Israel on March 7 to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip within four days or face renewed maritime operations against Israeli-linked vessels.

The US launched air raids on Yemen’s Houthis as President Donald Trump warned that “hell will rain down” if the Iran-backed group continues its attacks on Red Sea shipping.

The Houthis have been attacking Israeli-linked ships passing through the Red and Arabian seas, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden with missiles and drones since late 2023, disrupting global trade for what it said was a show of solidarity with the Gaza Strip.

The group halted attacks when a Gaza ceasefire was declared in January between Israel and Hamas. But it threatened to resume the attacks when Israel blocked all aid into Gaza on March 2.

Yemen’s Houthi leader warns of escalation, expands naval blockade against US

Yemen Houthi

“We will respond to escalation with escalation,” al-Houthi said in a video statement, adding that Houthi forces had already launched missile and drone strikes following US airstrikes on Yemen.

“This is our choice, our decision, and our approach,” he added.

He accused Washington of turning the sea into a battlefield, stating that “it is the US that seeks to impact maritime navigation when it turns the sea into a war zone.”

Al-Houthi added that the US, like Israel, will now be included in the Houthi-imposed naval blockade “as long as its aggression persists.”

“Our decision was clear—it initially targeted only the Israeli enemy. Now, the US will also be included in the blockade,” he said.

“It is the duty of all countries to recognize who is posing a danger to navigation, who is threatening maritime security and the movement of ships,” he stressed, underlining: “It is the US.”

Al-Houthi described both the US and Israel as sources of instability, saying they “are sources of evil and danger on a global scale and throughout the region.”

“Evil comes from them. Crime comes from them. Aggression comes from them,” he continued.

Iran’s Expediency Council considers conditional approval of CFT, Palermo conventions

FATF

During a meeting with media representatives on Sunday, Sadeq Amoli Larijani, however, emphasized that the FATF is not under discussion in the council, as the parliament has not referred any FATF-related legislation to the body.

Larijani clarified that the council is only reviewing the two conventions, which were previously approved by the parliament but faced objections from the Guardian Council, that ensures the compatibility of parliamentary legislation with Islamic law and the Iranian Constitution.

The chairman of the Expediency Council, tasked with resolving disputes between the parliament and the Guardian Council, emphasized that the CFT and Palermo conventions, distinct from FATF, involve significant legal and military considerations.

He noted that while some members of the council have reservations about the conventions, they could be accepted conditionally, as over 50 countries have ratified them with similar reservations.

Approving the CFT and Palermo Conventions is part of Iran’s efforts to join the international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards, which many in the country argue could open a new window of economic opportunities despite hurdles.

Many also believe that Iran’s accession to these conventions could pave the way for information leaks against the country.

West can dispatch troops to Ukraine without Russia’s permission: France

“Ukraine is sovereign – if it requests allied forces to be on its territory, it is not up to Russia to accept or reject it,” Macron told Le Parisien.

Macron has been at the forefront of plans to deploy Western peacekeepers on the ground in Ukraine. Along with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Macron has championed the idea as an alternative security guarantee for Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire.

Russia has repeatedly rejected the notion of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.

In the interview, Macron reiterated the importance of supporting Ukraine and confirmed that European forces would be deployed only at Kyiv’s request. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia and dialogue with key international allies.

In the coming days, Macron will meet with newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss Ukraine.

Macron’s remarks came shortly before he participated in a virtual summit of the “coalition of the willing,” a group of countries who have pledged to help secure a future peace in Ukraine.

During the summit, participating international leaders expressed their support for Kyiv and discussed plans to send 10,000 peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.

While the peacekeeping plan is still being finalized by the U.K., France, and other partners, the contingent would likely involve “a few thousand troops” from each country, deployed at “key points” in Ukraine, to conduct training and demonstrate long-term support.

Omani top diplomat: Talks with Iran FM Araghchi ‘productive’

Badr al-Busaidi reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to fostering dialogue aimed at ensuring peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

“Today in Muscat, I met with Mr. Araghchi. We held fruitful discussions on bilateral issues as well as regional developments,” al-Busaidi stated on his personal account on X social media.

He emphasized that Oman remains steadfast in its support for dialogue and initiatives that contribute to the well-being of the nations in the region.

The visit by Iran’s foreign minister follows a letter sent by the U.S. President to the Iranian officials about the possibility of talks between Washington and Tehran. It also underscores Oman’s enduring role as a mediator in regional affairs.

Araghchi arrived in the Omani capital on Sunday, heading a high-ranking delegation.

Iran strongly condemns US, UK air attacks on Yemen

Esmail Baghaei

In a statement released on Sunday, Esmaeil Baqaei denounced the US and UK military aggression against Yemen as a clear violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental international law on the prohibition of use of force and on respect for the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of countries.

The Iranian spokesman reminded the United Nations and the UN Security Council of their responsibility to counter the violation of and threat to international peace and security.

He described the joint military aggression by the US and the UK against the people of Yemen as part of their constant support for the Israeli genocidal crimes against the oppressed people of Palestine and suppression of any solidarity and support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian nation.

The root cause of insecurity in West Asia is the continuation of massacre and occupation in the occupied Palestine, which is in progress with the full support from the US, the UK and a number of other Western governments that have jeopardized the regional and international peace and security, he stated.

The Iranian spokesman reminded all governments as well as international and Islamic organizations of their legal and moral responsibility to counter genocide and ethnic cleansing in the occupied Palestine, which are carried out with various methods such as imposing starvation and famine on the oppressed Palestinians in the holy month of Ramadan.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced a series of large-scale strikes on Yemen after the Houthis threatened to resume raids on Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea over Israel’s blockade on Gaza.

The US attacks, which began on Saturday and continued into the early hours of Sunday, on the Yemeni capital Sana’a, as well as on areas in Saada, Al Bayda and Radaa have killed 31 people and wounded 101, “most of whom were children and women”, health ministry spokesperson Anis Al-Asbahi posted on X.
