Brexit Widely Covered by Iranian Newspapers on Saturday

BREXIT

On Thursday, June 23, Britain voted to leave the European Union, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow to the European project of greater unity since World War Two.

Global financial markets plunged as results from the referendum showed a near 52-48 percent split for leaving.

The pound fell more than 10% against the dollar to levels last seen in 1985, its biggest one-day fall in history, and European shares plummeted more than 8%, headed for their biggest ever one-day fall.

Many Iranian newspapers dedicated their front pages on Saturday to the globally-effective development.

The economic newspaper Abrar-e Eqtesadi reported the “Fall of Global Financial Markets after Brexit Shock”.

The reformist Aftab-e Yazd discussed Brexit’s impact on Iran, and raised questions about the remarks by certain analysts and officials who described the withdrawal as a ‘historic opportunity’. The paper used the headline “Which Historic Opportunity? Does Brexit Have Any Influence on Iran?”

The other reformist paper Arman-e Emrooz also described it as a shock, using the headline, “Shock to the World: 52% of Britons Vote for Brexit”.

Many papers used the term ‘earthquake’ in their description of the exit. The reformist papers Ebtekar and Roozan used the headlines “British Earthquake in Eurozone” and “Earthquake of British “Identity”: Nationalists Made Britain Exit from EU”, respectively, and the conservative papers Kayhan and Javan used “Political Earthquake in Britain, EU on Verge of Collapse” and “Earthquake of Disintegration in Britain, Domino of Exit from EU: Britain’s Unity in Danger, Europe Becomes Shaky”, respectively.

Sobh-e Now’s headline was “Bubbles of United Europe Burst One by One: Britain’s Self-Requested Exit from EU”.

Etemad focused on the generation gap in the votes for and against Brexit, using the headline “Riot of the Elderly: 61% of the Elderly Vote for Brexit, While 75% of Young Britons Vote against It”.

There were also papers which paid attention to the benefits the Eastern Bloc, including China and Russia, would gain from Britain’s exit from the EU. “Separation in West, Wedding in East: Brexit Changes the Game in Favour of China and Russia” was Haft-e Sobh’s headline. It also reported that “Gold Price Amazingly Sours after Brexit”.

The most interesting headlines seemed to be Hamshahri’s “Sunset of the Empire” and Etemad’s editorial “A Bitter Divorce after a Marriage Out of Expediency”.

There were also other brilliant editorials focusing on the issue. Jame Jam’s editorial was entitled “Return of Trojan Horse to the Island”, alluding to French ex-President Charles de Gaulle, who viewed Britain as the USA’s Trojan horse in Europe.

Javan also focused on “Brexit’s Influence on Iran’s Economy” in its editorial. Khorasan’s editorial described Brexit as “An Opportunity for ‘Second Europe’ Strategy”.

Arman-e Emrooz, Jomhouri Eslami, and Vaghaye Ettefaghieh were also among several newspapers which focused on the repercussions and aftershocks of Brexit in their editorials.

IRGC Engages Militants in Northwest Iran

The confrontation took place in a village in the Mahabad County of West Azerbaijan Province.

An IRGC member, who asked not to be named, said the forces engaged the terrorists around Bengovin Village, and said the clashes continue. “The Corps’ forces are still in the area and are trying to clear it [of militants].”

The militants had last week clashed with the IRGC in the Oshnavieh County, also in West Azerbaijan Province.

The IRGC is, meanwhile, watchful of terrorist movements throughout the country.

On Thursday, Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, the commander of the IRGC’s Ground Forces, said the forces had captured two members of a terrorist group in the southwest, saying the detainees had admitted to US and Saudi support. The group had been dismantled in the city of Khash in Iran’s Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province last week.

Additionally, after thwarting a Takfiri-Wahhabi plot to stage attacks in Iran’s major cites including Tehran, the country’s Intelligence Ministry released a video on Wednesday showing the security forces raiding the hideout of the terrorists in the capital.

A day earlier, Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi had briefed reporters on the recent swoop, saying that as many as 10 terrorists had been apprehended from June 14 to 20 in Tehran and three border and central provinces.

It was also reported recently that Iranian security forces killed five members of a terrorist group in the Khash region.

Weightlifting Olympics Gold Medallist Criticizes IOC’s Doping Scrutiny Policy

Iranian weightlifter and 2012 Olympic gold medallist, Behdad Salimi

In an interview with ISNA, as translated by IFP, Behdad Salimi pointed to Ilyin’s positive doping test and said, “I believe the IOC’s policy to enquire about an athlete’s 4- to 8-year-old case is not an appropriate one and tarnishes his reputation. Ilya Ilyin is a paragon of weightlifting world.”

“After all, the IOC is the boss, and we’ll abide by its decisions, but I wish IOC authorities would show a more appropriate behaviour towards athletes. At least, they should not have released the results of the doping retest in order to avoid tainting the image of an athlete in the eyes of his own country’s people,” Iran’s Olympic gold medallist went on to say that

“Thank God, Iranians’ names were not among the released results. Iranian lifters are the most pious athletes on earth,” Salimi added.

“Unlike some countries that make investment on doping science and supplements, we invest on the power of our elbows to set new world records,” he noted.

Almost all Iranian newspapers dedicated their front pages to the issue of Brexit and its repercussions. In a separate article, IFP will cover the numerous headlines and editorials which focused on the issue.

The recent bus crash in Fars province, which killed several soldiers, remained a top story today. Conservative media are using the incident to criticize the government’s transportation policies, and some reformist ones are renewing their call for major changes in military service policies.

Many newspapers also covered President Hassan Rouhani’s ongoing actions against the issues of huge salaries paid to certain executives.

Another top story was a recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization [SCO] Summit in Tashkent and the issue of Iran’s accession to the body.

Below, you can find these stories as well as a number of others appearing on front pages of Iranian newspapers on Saturday.

Iraqi Forces Make Fresh Progress in Fight against ISIS, Arrive at Gate of Mosul

Iraqi Forces Make Fresh Progress in Fight against ISIS, Arrive at Gate of Mosul

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Defence, the Iraqi Armed Forces were able to liberate the Makhoul Mountains after a two day long battle with the ISIS terrorists, as reported by IRNA and translated by IFP.

With the Makhoul Mountains under their control, the Iraqi Armed Forces can now turn their attention to the strategic village of Al-Shirqat in Mosul’s southern countryside.

Iraq’s defence ministry is aiming to deploy 4,500 soldiers to the Makhmour front in preparation for the long-anticipated offensive against ISIS in Mosul.

Iraq’s Defence Minister Khaled al-Obaidi who visited Makhmour on Saturday did reportedly discuss the deployment of troops with Kurdish military officials.

During his visit to Makhmour the Iraqi defence chief said that the Mosul offensive will come sooner and harsher than what ISIS may expect.

“The Mosul operation will be no later than the first half of this year,” he said. “The operation to liberate Nineveh will be sooner and harsher than what ISIS expects. It will be done through new technics and experience Iraqi forces have gained in battle,” al-Obaidi said.

“We will use such new weapons that will shock ISIS. It is possible that the Peshmerga will also participate and play their role,” he vowed.

The preparations for Mosul offensive came after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced last Friday that the strategic city of Fallujah had been liberated from control of ISIS.

“Fallujah has returned to the homeland. Our troops are in control of the city and have tightened their grip on its centre,” Abadi said in a televised address on June 17.

Fallujah, around 50 kilometres west of the capital Baghdad, was the first Iraqi city to fall to ISIS in early 2014.

The second largest Iraqi city of Mosul was also captured by ISIS terrorists in 2014. The militants overran large swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2013 and 2014.

Smuggler of Achaemenid Coins Apprehended in Metro

Achaemenid Coins

“A young man carrying a bulging backpack failed to escape police agents in Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti metro station,” Colonel Ali Raghi said, according to a report by Police News Agency as translated by IFP.

After the strip search of the suspect, a bladed weapon and a cloth bag filled with 25 Achaemenid coins were found, he went on to say.

The suspect confessed that he had taken the coins from a man named Alireza in western Iranian city of Khorramabad, Colonel Raghi added.

Tehran’s Police Chief pointed to the futile attempts of the suspect to deceive police agents by claiming that the coins are forged and continued.

“Police agents didn’t fall for that. After the inspection of his cellphone, they found some videos of mountain excavation. It came out that the coins were actually genuine, and a man in Bokhrest Street, Tehran, was expecting them.”

Colonel Raghi said the antique smuggler had the audacity to offer all the coins as a bribe to the police agents, asking them to release him in return.

The suspect was finally handed over to the Police Department.

The Achaemenid Empire (c. 550-330 BCE), sometimes known as First Persian Empire, was an empire in Southwest Asia, founded in the 6th century BCE by Cyrus the Great who overthrew the Median confederation.

It expanded to eventually rule over significant portions of the ancient world which at around 500 BCE stretched from the Indus Valley in the east, to Thrace and Macedon on the northeastern border of Greece, making it the biggest empire the world had yet seen.

Body eases Iran restrictions, keeps blacklist

FATF
This photo shows the opening of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) meeting in Busan, South Korea on June 22, 2016.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) hailed on Friday Iran’s adoption of an action plan to address shortcomings in its anti-money laundering policies and its decision to seek assistance with implementation.

In its plenary meeting in South Korea, the body took into account Iran’s implementation of an anti-money laundering law and its membership at the Eurasian Group, an FATF-style regional body.

Iran, however, will remain on the FATF blacklist until the full implementation is complete, the body said. Moreover, if it fails to demonstrate “sufficient progress” at the end of the yearlong suspension, the restrictions will be reimposed.

The body is under the influence of the United States, which is still maintaining some of its sanctions on Iran despite a nuclear agreement reached in July. US pressure groups, meanwhile, are urging the FATF to keep Iran on the blacklist.

Last week, Rep. Ed Royce who chairs the foreign relations committee in the House of Representatives wrote to US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, asking him to maintain the designation.

Since the implementation of the agreement, global banks have cited the FATF’s reviews on Iran to avoid processing Iranian transactions, prompting the Islamic Republic to push for removal from the list which many believe is politically motivated.

Washington’s agreement to ease FATF restrictions came as Boeing confirmed its plans to sign a massive aircraft deal with Iran.

In a letter to US Congress on Thursday, Boeing said national airline Iran Air intended to buy 80 passenger planes worth $17.6 billion and lease 29 others, with deliveries expected to begin as early as next year.

Boeing’s European rival Airbus has also a $27 billion agreement with Iran for 118 passenger planes. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Wednesday he hoped that Tehran’s deal with Boeing would pave the way for finalizing the contract with Airbus.

US officials, however, said the FATF’s announcement has no effect on the US government’s sanctions on Iran.

“Global financial institutions understand that this illicit conduct, not empty expressions of intent, must be changed before risking business with Iran,” said Mark Dubowitz, an Iran sanctions expert at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

The FATF’s own advice seemed to be playing into those fears. The body called on countries around the world to “continue to advise their financial institutions to apply enhanced due diligence to (Iranian) business relationships and transactions.”

Top Iranian officials have complained that the US is not fulfilling its part of the nuclear agreement and accused Western officials of taking half-hearted measures which make financial institutions maintain their “hands off” approach toward Iran.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said the US is resorting to “deception” to obstruct international trade with Iran.

Officials in the US State Department and Treasury have frequently said that Iran would not be given any access to the American financial system.

US Sanctions Have No Impact on Hezbollah: Nasrallah

Seyyed Hassan Nasrollah

Nasrallah said Hezbollah entirely rejected the US sanctions, calling them an attack on the country’s sovereignty.

“We totally reject this [US] law until the Day of Judgment. … Even if the law is applied, we as a party and an organizational and jihadi movement, will not be hurt or affected,” Nasrallah said in a televised speech on Friday marking the passing of 40 days since the martyrdom of Hezbollah’s top commander Mustafa Badreddine in Syria.

“The law will not have any financial impact on Hezbollah. I have said before that we do not have commercial or investment projects and commercial institutions that operate through banks,” he said, addressing a Hezbollah memorial ceremony for Badreddine at a complex south of Beirut via video link.

Although Iranian support for his group has for been a well-known fact for a long time, Nasrallah pointed out that Hezbollah is receiving its money and arms from Iran. “As long as Iran has money, Hezbollah has money. … Can we be any more frank than that?” he said.

“Hezbollah’s budget and its expenses are coming from the Islamic Republic of Iran. … Our allocated money is coming to us in the same way we receive our rockets with which we threaten Israel,” Nasrallah said, drawing cheers from the crowd. “No bank in the world can prevent money reaching us.”

He thanked the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iran’s President and its government for their “generous support” for Hezbollah during the years of resistance against Israeli occupation of south Lebanon that ended in 2000, the Daily Star reported.

However, Nasrallah warned against Lebanese banks targeting Hezbollah’s supporters.

“Some banks in Lebanon went too far and they became more American than the Americans themselves. They even did something that the Americans did not ask for. They targeted people and charitable foundations that were not mentioned in the US list,” Nasrallah said, in reference to a sanctions list designated by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.

“There are some banks, that if a person is related to a Hezbollah member, they will close their accounts. This is an attack on charitable foundations and our people and we reject this attack, and we will not allow it. Whoever says they care about the financial sector, they shouldn’t target a third of the population,” he added.

Nasrallah said Hezbollah has started a dialogue with Lebanese officials on the basis of rejecting the US law. “We are open to any dialogue to solve this [US sanctions] file,” he said.

The US law, which went into effect in March, threatens to bar from the American financial market any bank that knowingly deals with Hezbollah or institutions or persons affiliated with the group.

In his speech, Nasrallah touched on his party’s involvement in the 5-year-old war in Syria, saying that Hezbollah has lost 26 fighters this month in the battle for Aleppo. He vowed to increase the group’s presence in the northern Syrian province, which he said determined the fate of the entire region.

“We are facing a new wave of war plans in Syria that are being fought in northern Syria, namely in Aleppo,” he said. “The fight to defend Aleppo is the fight to defend Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan, which paid the price recently.”

“What is happening in Aleppo is an attempt to give a new opportunity for the American-Saudi-takfiri project to make a new achievement that has not been made before,” Nasrallah said. He added that thousands of armed men have entered Syria via Turkey for the battle in Aleppo.

Nasrallah said the 26 fighters Hezbollah lost since the beginning of June was a relatively low figure compared to the 617 militants he said were killed on the other side. Another 800 militants were wounded in the battle, and Hezbollah destroyed 80 of their tanks, he said.

“In a battle like this you would expect more martyrs than that,” he said.

He added that in addition to the 26 martyred in Aleppo, one Hezbollah fighter is missing, and another one has been captured by militants. He said he provided the figures in response to media that have been claiming that scores of Hezbollah were killed in the battle.

There Are Good People Even among Israelites: Senior Cleric

Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi

Here’s IFP’s translation of excerpts from his lecture in the holy city of Qom:

Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi referred to the crimes committed by ISIS militants and Israelis, saying that they are a shame for the human kind.

“Rational factors should be strengthened inside the human being so that one would not commit big sins,” he added.

However, the cleric added, not all people in the West are heartless and criminal.

“When we are talking about the US, we do not mean that American people are criminals; we are indeed referring to the US politicians, who are Satans,” Mesbah Yazdi noted.

“There are healthy and kind people in the West, too. There are good people everywhere. Even among the Israelites, not all people were sinners. There were people among them who prayed all the night until morning. Good people are influenced by the teachings of divine prophets,” he went on to say.

Mesbah Yazdi further referred to one of his foreign trips, saying, “In a trip to Brazil, I delivered a speech for Christian priests and recited parts of Arafah prayer for them. It impressed them so much that the Christian priests burst into tears.”

Iran Says Respects Brexit Referendum Results

“As a democratic establishment, the Islamic Republic of Iran respects the British people’s vote on leaving the European Union, and considers that as being in line with the will of majority of that country’s people to adopt their own foreign policy,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

It also underlined that Iran always favors expansion of relations with the European countries on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of each other, stressing that Brexit is not going to change anything about Iran’s attitude towards Britain.

Britain voted to leave the European Union, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow to the European project of greater unity since World War Two.

Global financial markets plunged as results from the referendum showed a near 52-48 percent split for leaving.

The pound fell more than 10 percent against the dollar to levels last seen in 1985, its biggest one-day fall in history, and European shares plummeted more than 8 percent, headed for their biggest ever one-day fall.

Cameron, who lost his gamble betting the nation’s future on an outcome he predicted would be catastrophic, said he would resign as prime minister by October.

“I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination,” he said in a televised address outside his Downing Street office on Friday morning.

The vote will initiate at least two years of divorce proceedings with the EU, the first exit by any member state. Cameron said it would be up to his successor to formally start the exit process.
