Saudis Know No Limit in Slaughtering Yemenis: Iran

qassemi12

Qassemi made the remarks on Monday after a Saudi airstrike hit an MSF (Doctors Without Borders) hospital in Yemen’s Hajjah province and killed at least 25 people and injured some 20 others.

While condemning the latest Saudi attack, he stressed that the international community’s silence on Riyadh’s destruction of hospitals and schools is the reason behind  Saudis’ ceaseless atrocities in Yemen.

He stressed that “the terrorist-sponsoring and warmongering regime of Saud knows no boundaries and limits to killing children, women, the injured and civilians.”

The Houthi Ansarullah movement, which rules the capital Sana’a also condemned the attack, saying it was carried out in clear violation of a ceasefire agreement which has been holding across Yemen over the past four months.

The United States also denounced the attack on the MSF hospital, and called “on all parties to cease hostilities immediately.”

“We’re deeply concerned by a reported strike on a hospital in northern Yemen,” State Department spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau said. “Strikes on humanitarian facilities, including hospitals, are particularly concerning.”

She added that the US is currently in close contact with the Saudis over the incident. “Continued military actions only prolong the suffering of the Yemeni people.”

Meanwhile, the UN has voiced it worries over a spike in child casualties over the last week in Yemen.

On Sunday, warplanes targeted a school and other locations in the northwestern province of Sa’ada, killing several civilians, many of them children.

“The children who were killed were between the ages of six and 14, and the majority were between six and eight,” said UNICEF’s Yemen representative Julien Harneis.

He also noted that the humanitarian situation in the country was severely deteriorating, adding that “you have got this real pressure cooker with a collapsing economy and a collapsing health system.”

“If the health system and education systems collapse then for years after the war ends, the country will be vulnerable to things like pandemics, and you will have lower education rates which are going to hamper the country for years, if not decades,” he added.

About 10,000 people have been killed since the Saudi aggression began in late March 2015. Yemenis say most of the victims in the Saudi airstrikes are civilians. The attacks by Riyadh are meant to reinstate the resigned president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Diplomat Highlights Iran-Turkey Coordination on Syria

Continued consultations among the influential actors can prepare the ground for the essential requirements for an exit from the crisis in Syria, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with Russian president’s special envoy to the Middle East, Mikhail Bogdanov, held in Tehran on Monday.

To that end, he added, Iran and Turkey have agreed to exchange diplomatic delegations for talks on Syria.

Jaberi Ansari said he will take a trip to Turkey for “more detailed negotiations about the regional issues,” noting that Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Umit Yalcin will be also invited to visit Iran soon.

Hailing Turkey as a major and influential country in the region, he added that Tehran and Ankara have always had intensive consultations during the crisis in Syria, saying two neighbours have reached a general consensus on the fundamentals of Syria crisis settlement.

As regards the main principles that all parties need to agree on, the Iranian diplomat highlighted the respect for Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, formation of a national and inclusive administration and the Syrian nation’s right to decide its own fate.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a recent report by the Syrian Centre for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

“On August 16, 2016, Tu-23M3 long-range bombers and Su-34 bombers, having taken off from their base in Hamadan [Islamic Republic of Iran], carried out group airstrikes against targets belonging to the ISIS and Nusra Front terrorist groups in the provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and Idlib,” the ministry said in a statement, as cited by Sputnik.

Russian bombers also destroyed three militant command points and training camps in Syria’s Serakab, Al-Bab, Aleppo and Deir Ez-Zor, killing “a significant number” of terrorists, according to the ministry.

“Weapons and ammunition depots, training camps and command points destroyed through airstrikes were used to supply militants active in the Aleppo region,” the ministry said in a statement.

Iranian media have published photos claimed to be taken of these jet fighters in Hamadan:

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports political stability in Burundi and is ready to expand cooperation with this country in science, education, energy and agriculture,” Zarif said in a meeting with the Burundian Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation, Alain Aime Nyamitwe, in Tehran on Monday, August 15.

He hailed Burundi’s stances in international organizations, particularly the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement, and said cooperation with African countries at mutual and international levels is a favourable opportunity.

The top Iranian diplomat added that the Islamic Republic pursues a positive and constructive approach to the expansion of relations with African states.

Zarif urged Tehran and Bujumbura to further bolster their very good relations in a variety of different sectors.

Burundi Attaches Special Importance to Ties with Iran

Nyamitwe, for his part, said Iran enjoys a key status in the region and the world and added that Bujumbura attaches special significance to enhanced relations with Tehran.

He called for cooperation among Iranian and Burundian universities.

The Burundian minister is in Tehran to hold talks with senior Iranian officials. He is scheduled to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and submit a written message of his Burundian counterpart to him.

Nyamitwe will also confer with Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad Farhadi and officials of the Ministry of Petroleum.

In February 2015, the Iranian foreign minister paid a diplomatic tour of four East African countries – Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Tanzania – which has been described as the beginning of a new chapter in Tehran’s ties with African countries.

Iran already has a significant presence in agricultural and economic projects in some African countries and has been a major contributor to humanitarian missions across the continent over the past years.

Iran’s active diplomacy in Africa has been construed as a sign of the country’s willingness to engage deeper in Africa’s political and economic equations; a move that can secure the country’s foothold in the region following the removal of sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov in Tehran, Press TV reported.

During the meeting, Zarif and Bogdanov stressed the importance of closer consultation between Iran and Russia on ways to solve the crisis in Syria.

Bogdanov, who also serves as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to the Middle East, is in Tehran to hold talks with senior Iranian officials. Earlier on Monday, he met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari.

Iran and Russia are Syria’s main allies and have been assisting the government in Damascus in its fight against foreign-backed terrorist groups, including Takfiri ISIS terrorists.

Since September 30, 2015, Russia has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh and other terrorist groups in Syria at the Syrian government’s request.

Iran has also been providing advisory military assistance to the Syrian government.

Syria has been gripped by a foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

MasterCard spokesman Seth Eisen told Trend on August 15 that the company has no activity in Iran.

“MasterCard does not have any activities in Iran, as sanctions have remained in place for US-based companies for some time,” Eisen explained.

Earlier, Iranian media outlets quoted Mahmoud Vaezi, the country’s ICT minister, as saying that Iran’s Post Company has signed a deal with a foreign firm to offer MasterCard service to Iranians.

The Iranian Post Company has signed a deal with Vision Card Iranian, a company representing MasterCard in Iran, under the framework of international trade rules, Vaezi said.

The Iranians’ problem with their international payments has been resolved as they can now apply to the Iranian Post Company and receive their international MasterCard, he went on to say.

Vaezi further said the opportunity is a result of the nuclear deal, which led to removal of sanctions against Iran last January.

Last March, it was announced that the Central Bank of Iran adopted a policy of holding regular talks with Visa and MasterCard to have their services in the country.

Iranian officials had already said the country is preparing a ground for the people to use credit cards provided by Asian banks until the restrictions for using the international electronic payment operators, like Visa and MasterCard, are removed.

Earlier, in February, iyzico – a Turkish credit card company – singed a deal with Iran enabling its customers to process transactions from some 230 million payment cards, which until recently were not connected to any financial system outside Iran.

The Turkish company signed the deal to enter Iran after restrictions excluding the country from the SWIFT banking system were removed following implementation of the nuclear deal.

In the meeting held in Tehran on Monday, Zarif pointed to his planned visit to Latin American countries, including Venezuela, in coming days and said Tehran is willing to enhance ties with Caracas in all areas.

He added that a high-ranking economic delegation comprising government and private sector officials will accompany him in the upcoming visit.

The Iranian foreign minister further expressed the hope that the trip would lead to the development of bilateral relations in various spheres, banking and energy in particular, considering that representatives from the two sectors in Iran will be accompanying him in the trip.

Zarif also said Tehran was ready to contribute to the upcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which is slated to be held in Venezuela later in the year.

The Non-Aligned Movement is a group of 120 member states which are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

Rodriguez, for her part, welcomed the scheduled visit to Venezuela by Zarif and called for the expansion of the bilateral ties between the two countries in all areas.

The Venezuelan top diplomat has traveled to the Iranian capital alongside Oil Minister Eulogio Del Pino.

Speaking to reporters in Kermanshah, the province’s capital city, Provincial Police Chief Brigadier General Manouchehr Amanollahi said after receiving information about the presence of three Takfiri terrorists in the city, the issue was put high on the agenda of the intelligence forces.

Based on the information, a team of Special Forces in cooperation with intelligence forces mounted an attack on the hideout of the terrorists on Tuesday morning, he noted.

After clashing with the three Takfiri terrorists, the security forces managed to kill all of them, the police chief added.

He further emphasized that the terrorist elements had crossed into Iran to commit acts of sabotage in the country.

The commander went on to say that a Kalashnikov, two magazines and an explosive vest were seized from the terrorists.

Kermanshah Province’s Judiciary Chief Mohammad Reza Edalatkhah also announced that another Takfiri element had been killed in a separate operation on Monday night.

The terrorist was killed in Javanrood, Kermanshah, he noted, adding that several others were also arrested in the operation, as reported by Tasnim and translated by IFP.

Iran Can Consider BBC World’s Request for Opening Office in Tehran: Official

BBC World News

In the past two months, there have been rumours that BBC is going to resume its activities in Iran.

In an interview with Sobh-e Now newspaper, as translated by IFP, Nooshabadi said that if BBC World makes a request for opening its office, it will be considered.

However, he added, they have yet to make an official request for opening their office in Iran.

“If they send their request, it will be studied by a three-member council comprised of the Intelligence Ministry, the Interior Ministry, and the Culture Ministry,” Nooshabadi went on to say.

Culture Minister Ali Jannati has also made comments about the issue. He recently told Mehr that giving permission to BBC Persian is totally off the table.

However, Jannati said, issuing licence for BBC World is possible, because their behaviour towards Iran is totally different, and the type of their job differs from that of BBC Persian.

Secret Meeting between BBC Officials and Iran’s Envoy to London

In its Monday report, Sobh-e Now claims that Iran’s Chargé d’affaires in London Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh had held a meeting with BBC officials in the TV channel’s office in 2014.

During the meeting, a deputy head of BBC News has reportedly voiced the BBC chief’s willingness to visit Iran, but the Iranian official said such a visit would be fruitless without a considerable agenda.

He has recommended that they would use the ‘reopening of BBC office’ as a pretext for Tony Hall, the Director-General of BBC, to visit Iran. However, BBC officials convince Habibollahzadeh that Iranian authorities should give the green light for such a visit.

Sobh-e Now further claimed that BBC had certain conditions: the DG’s meeting with Iranian officials, issuance of visa for visits of BBC reporters, and the presence of a residing correspondent in Tehran were among the requests made by BBC.

We should wait and see whether the British news channel would be able to restart its operation in Iran or not.

Hossein Jaberi Ansari (L), the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African Affairs, shakes hand with Russian Deputy FM Mikhail Bogdanov before bilateral talks in Tehran, August 15, 2016.

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African Affairs, met with visiting Russian Deputy FM Mikhail Bogdanov in Tehran on Monday, discussing with him the advancement of Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the fight against international terrorism besides the ongoing Syrian conflict.

Iran and Russia have both been assisting the government in Damascus in its fight against a foreign-backed militancy. Iran has been offering advisory military help, and Russia has been conducting an aerial campaign against militant positions in the Arab country.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The United Nations (UN)’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Jaberi Ansari and Bogdanov, who is the Russian presidential envoy on the Middle East and Africa, also discussed the promotion of bilateral ties and regional cooperation plus the implementation of a nuclear deal between Iran and six other countries, including Russia.

The deal, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was struck in July 2015 and started being implemented in January 2016.

Iran is in contact with its international partners — which, besides Russia, also include the United States, France, the UK, China, and Germany — to oversee the due implementation of the JCPOA.
