Americans Oppose Iranians Benefit from JCPOA: DM

Dehghan

“The Americans are not willing that our nation benefit from the positive aspects of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said in a speech on Tuesday evening.

“Anyway, the enemy is the enemy and its work is obstructionism,” he said, adding that however, the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) did not lead to a lose situation for Tehran.

If you compare the current situation to the past, it can be seen that before the deal, anti-Iran sanctions were increasing and the West used to introduce the country as a global threat and “that was not good at all,” the defense minister noted.

While the JCPOA, a 159-page nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 came into force in January 2016, some Iranian officials complain about the US failure to fully implement the accord.

Earlier in March, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said Americans have yet to fulfill what they were supposed to do as per the nuclear deal.

Iran still has problems in its banking transactions or in restoring its frozen assets, because Western countries and those involved in such processes are afraid of Americans, the Leader said at the time, criticizing the US for its moves to prevent Iran from taking advantage of the sanctions removal.

Zarif to Start Tour of Latin American Countries in Coming Days

Zarif

Here is IFP’s translation of a report by Fars:

Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi told reporters on Wednesday, August 17, that Zarif will visit Cuba, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, and Venezuela during his Latin American tour.

He is going to discuss Tehran’s bilateral ties with these countries after the implementation of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

“Because of the long distance, Zarif will have a one-day stay in each of these countries,” Takht-Ravanchi noted.

“This is Zarif’s first visit to Latin America under President Hassan Rouhani’s government. I had earlier visited the region, and closely witnessed their interest in working with Iran,” he went on to say.

“In spite of the long distance between Iran and South America, the continent is of great importance to Iran, and the grounds for cooperation with these countries are very diverse and abundant.”

Zarif will be accompanied by a 60-strong economic delegation including Iranian businessmen working in different fields.

The Latin American tour was slated for mid-May, but it was postponed due to the domestic developments in one of the destinations.

No Major Obstacle to Expansion of Iran’s Ties with Latin America

Takht-Ravanchi stressed that there is no major barrier to the promotion of ties with Latin American countries, particularly in economic issues.

He stressed that there is no negative mentality for cooperation with these countries.

“Our enemies might have portrayed a negative image of the Islamic Republic in this region, like other parts of the world; however, these countries [South American states] have witnessed that working with Iran has been positive for them,” Takht-Ravanchi said.

“The capacities for enhancement of relations have yet to be tapped, and we believe that great work can be done in line with the two sides’ interests,” he noted.

The Iranian diplomat referred to Iran’s engineering and technical services as one of the major items that can be exported to these countries.

“Iran has already started exporting its engineering and technical services, but there are wider grounds for cooperation in this field,” he said, adding that such services have been widely welcomed by some of these countries, including Venezuela.

“In addition to bilateral meetings with these countries’ high-ranking officials, economic seminars are due to be held with the attendance of Iranian and Latin American private sectors.

“The tour of Latin America is a great opportunity for expansion of Tehran’s ties with these countries in different fields, especially in economy,” he added.

Attaché Meets Iranian Nationals Arrested in Kuwait

Kuwait

Bahram GhasemiBahram Qassemi announced on Tuesday that Iran’s diplomatic mission in Kuwait is pursuing the fate of a group of Iranians that have been arrested by the Arab country’s coast guard for alleged illegal entry with the intention to stay and work there.

Iran’s attaché in Kuwait has visited the arrestees after coordination with the Kuwaiti officials, Qassemi noted, saying one of them who has been injured during the arrest is reportedly “in satisfactory health.”

He underlined that diplomatic efforts will go on to ascertain the authenticity of the allegations and address the problem.

On Sunday, Kuwait’s Interior Ministry said its coast guard has detained 10 Iranians, accusing them of trying to breach border.

The ministry said one of the Iranian men was wounded after refusing coast guard orders to surrender.

The men were described as “infiltrators” by the ministry statement, published by the state-run Kuwait News Agency Sunday.

The ministry released a photo showing nine of the men on their knees with their hands clasped behind their backs.

Iranian President Congratulates Indonesia on National Day

Rouhani

In a message to his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo on Wednesday, President Rouhani felicitated the 71st anniversary of the country’s Independence Day and called for closer ties between Tehran and Jakarta in all spheres.

“I hope that in light of the existing political will and through using the two countries’ numerous capacities, we will witness the expansion of relations and cooperation in all political, economic, cultural and international areas,” he said in the message.

The Iranian president further wished Widodo health and success and prosperity for the “Muslim and brother people” of Indonesia.

Indonesia, a Southeast Asian nation made up of thousands of volcanic islands, is home to hundreds of ethnic groups speaking many different languages.

Indonesia had been a Dutch colony for over 300 years when a group of revolutionaries declared independence on August 17, 1945.

Iran Hasn’t Put Its Airbase at Russia’s Disposal: Parliament Speaker

ali-larijani (1)

According to a report by Tasnim, as translated by IFP, Larijani emphasized that no base has been put at Russian troops’ disposal.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran cooperates with Russia in regional issues, particularly on Syria, but it has not given them any [military] base,” Larijani said during an open session of the Iranian Parliament on August 17.

He further categorically rejected the earlier media reports about the issue.

He made the remarks in reaction to an objection raised by Iranian lawmaker Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh who slammed the deployment of Russian forces to Iran’s Nojeh airbase in Hamadan as being against the Article 176 of Iran’s Constitution.

Falahatpisheh, who is a member of Iranian Parliament’s Foreign Policy and National Security Commission, said, “Moscow has shown in recent years that it has a volatile and different foreign policy.”

“World powers have their own considerations in foreign policy, and it has been proved that whenever the Islamic Republic is faced with a crisis, world powers are against our country,” he noted.

Larijani’s reaction came as Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani had earlier implicitly confirmed the Russia’s use of Iran’s airbase.

In an interview with IRNA right after the media reports about Iran-Russia collaboration, Shamkhani announced that Tehran and Moscow share their potentials and resources with each other as part of a strategic partnership developed between the two sides in the ongoing campaign against terrorism in Syria.

“Cooperation between Iran and Russia in fighting terrorism in Syria is strategic and we exchange potentials and facilities,” IRNA quoted Shamkhani as saying when asked about Russia’s use of Iran’s air base.

“With the constructive and broad cooperation among Iran, Russia, Syria and the Resistance Front, the conditions have become so harsh for the terrorists,” Shamkhani said.

The trilateral cooperation will continue with “new and extensive operations” until militants are “annihilated,” he said.

The remarks came after Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday, August 16, that it had deployed Tu-22M3 bombers and Su-34 strike fighters to Iran and these have already carried out airstrikes against terrorists in Syria.

“On August 16, 2016, Tu-23M3 long-range bombers and Su-34 bombers, having taken off from their base in Hamadan [Islamic Republic of Iran], carried out group airstrikes against targets belonging to the ISIS and Nusra Front terrorist groups in the provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and Idlib,” the ministry said in a statement, as cited by Sputnik.

Iran and Russia, known as the main allies of Syria, have been looking for a solution to a crisis that has plagued the Arab country for years.

Iran’s Behdad Salimi Breaks World Record in Rio 2016 Weightlifting

behdad salimi

Behdad lifted 216 kilograms in snatch to best Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze, who had just set a new world record, in Rio de Janeiro’s Riocentro – Pavilion 2 on Tuesday but he was not ranked in the final standings as the jury did not accept any of his attempts in the clean and jerk.

During the clean and jerk stage, the Iranian champion lifted 245 kilograms but received two red lights from the judges, a contentious move severely protested by the Iranian coaching team. For his second attempt, he once again lifted 245 kilograms and despite getting three white lights from the judges, the jury committee did not accept the result. And in his third attempt he failed to lift the barbell.

Talakhadze won the event’s gold with a total of 473 kilograms with Armenia’s Gor Minasyan and Georgia’s Irakli Turmanidze standing in the second and third spots, respectively.

On Tuesday, Iranian weightlifter Sohrab Moradi won gold in the 94-kilogram category after lifting a total of 403 kilograms, and on Friday, Kianoush Rostami won Iran’s first gold after lifting a total of 396 kilograms in the 85-kilogram category.

Busted Cell Planned Simultaneous Terrorist Acts in Iran: Intelligence Minister

Alavi

Alavi told reporters on Tuesday that the cell, which was led by one of Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) regional ringleaders, was promptly identified and dealt a blow by Iran’s intelligence and security forces.

Among the Takfiri elements’ intentions was to launch terrorist attacks in populous and religious sites in the country’s interior cities, he said.

Alavi added that they had devised an extensive plan to simultaneously carry out the attacks in several sensitive locations in the country.

He went on to say that a significant amount of explosives, equipment and explosive vests as well as guns and grenades were seized from the terrorists.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Hossein Zolfaqari said the country’s security forces have managed to kill or arrest a number of Takfiri terrorists in clashes in the western province of Kermanshah.

Zolfaqari said intelligence and police forces have mounted two operations to arrest members of a Takfiri group in two areas in Kermanshah Province since Monday evening.

During the operations, the forces clashed with the Takfiris, killing four and arresting six members of the group, he added.

The security official said one of the terrorist elements killed in the operations was among the top leaders of a Takfiri group in neighboring Iraq.

Iran Expects US to Abide by JCPOA Commitments: Zarif

Mohammad Javad Zarif

On January 16, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries — the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany –started implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which they reached on July 14, 2015. Under the nuclear agreement, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program and provide enhanced access to international atomic monitors in return for the termination of all nuclear-related sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

“The JCPOA’s implementation has been successful in various areas, but there are some shortcomings in relation to the US commitments… We expect that — with pressure made by us and our European partners — their commitments would not only remain on paper,” Zarif said during a meeting with members of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee on Tuesday.

He stressed that Tehran expects the US to honor its commitments and proceed with the plan more actively.

Zarif went on to note that thanks to the removal of sanctions on Iran’s international trade transactions, the country’s oil exports have returned to pre-sanctions levels.

The nuclear talks had been going on for some 12 years before the JCPOA was struck. Iran’s original negotiating partners at the time the talks first started were the UK, France, and Germany, a group known back in 2003 as the E3.

The talks gained greater momentum under the administration of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who tasked the Foreign Ministry — under Zarif’s watch — with handling the talks soon after assuming office in 2013.

Purposes behind Putin Representative’s Visit to Iran

IMG15095781

Here is IFP’s translation of excerpts from Fararu’s interview with Beheshtipour:

“The visit of Putin’s representative to Tehran is mainly aimed at the issue of Syria. Most probably, the latest developments in Syria and the positions held by Iran and Russia have been discussed in a recent meeting between Bogdanov and [Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein] Jaberi Ansari,” Beheshtipour said.

He further pointed to the recent talks between the US and Russia about a joint plan agreed upon by the two sides, and said, “The meeting has been probably held with the aim of gaining Iran’s support for the plan.”

“Of course the US and Russia still have conflicts about the definition of terrorism and the instances of terrorist groups. They also disagree over the Nusra Front terrorist group, which has changed its name into Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham (the Front for the Conquest of the Levant).”

Russia, unlike the US, believes that Nusra Front cannot change its terrorist nature by changing its name, and cannot achieve the qualification for entry into peace talks, he noted.

Therefore, he added, Bogdanov’s visit to Iran is both concerned with the future of Syria talks and the field developments in this county as the diplomat is responsible for both issues.

According to Beheshtipour, Bogdanov visited Iran as Putin’s representative, rather than his official post the Deputy Foreign Minister, in a bid to pursue the issue in a higher level and ensure that the issue of Syria is coordinated in highest level.

“Iran does not agree with the Russian-American joint plan about the future of Syria; therefore, Bogdanov has visited Iran to gain the Islamic Republic’s support. In fact the visit is made following the negotiations between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Putin on the sidelines of Baku summit.”

“Bogdanov visited Tehran to discuss the details,” he added.

Iran-Turkey-Russia Alliance Is an Interesting, Yet Unrealistic Theory

In reaction to certain speculations about possible regional cooperation between Tehran, Ankara, and Moscow, particularly on the issue of Syria, Beheshtipour said the theory is interesting, but not based on realities.

“There is little chance for its realization, because Turkey still has serious disagreements with Russia and Iran over the future of Syria and [President Bashar] al-Assad.”

He pointed to the recent turnaround in Ankara’s stances towards Syria, particularly after the July coup in Turkey, but at the same time noted that the turnaround is not a 180-degree turn.

“There is no evidence or reason that confirms a major change in Turkey’s stances, moving away from the Western coalition towards Russia and Iran.”

Russia Trying to Convince Iran on Resolution of Syrian Crisis

“On the issue of Syria, Russia is cooperating with Iran more than it does with the US, and is trying to persuade Iran to reach a common solution.”

Therefore, Beheshtipour noted, it is even possible that Moscow gives concessions to Iran to convince the country.
