Iran Urges Immediate Release of Lawyers in Kenya

ghasemi

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Friday that Abdolhossein Safaei and Nasrollah Ebrahimi are “attorneys-at-law at [Iran’s] Justice Ministry and university professors who have traveled to Nairobi upon the request of the families of two Iranian prisoners in Kenya to follow up on their case and provide legal counselling.”

He added that the two lawyers were arrested on Tuesday by the Kenyan police because of “a misunderstanding” but were released later in the day after being questioned.

However, the Kenyan police once again detained the lawyers on Thursday following the intrusion of “some third parties” into the case, the Iranian spokesperson explained.

He said the Kenyan ambassador to Tehran was invited to the Iranian Foreign Ministry to hear Tehran’s protests about the “spiteful interference of a third party in a closed case with the indisputable purpose of destroying the good relations between Iran and Kenya.”

Qassemi expressed hope that investigations into the case would not be affected by false propaganda spread by those seeking to mar Iran-Kenya ties and the two lawyers would be immediately released given their good reputation and through the cooperation of the Kenyan government and judiciary.

Donald Trump

According to a report covered by ISNA, Mr Gingrich said, “He commented, ‘This is really a bigger job than I thought.’ Which is good. He should think that.”

After President Barack Obama met his successor at an official meeting in the Oval Office, sources inside the White House told The Wall Street Journal that Mr Trump “seemed surprised by the scope” of responsibilities the job entails.

Iranian Cleric Urges Retaliation for US Breaches of Nuclear Deal

Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani

“Nothing is expected from the US except hostility (toward the Iranian nation) and now is the time for retaliation,” Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani said in an address to a gathering of Friday prayer worshippers in Tehran.

“We are disgusted by recent moves by the US,” he said, adding that if Washington seeks to tear up the nuclear deal, Iran will set it ablaze as Leader of the Islamic Revolution has said.

The US Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another decade.

The ISA will expire on Dec. 31 if not renewed. The White House had not pushed for an extension, but had not raised serious objections.

While the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) came into force in January, some Iranian officials complain about the US failure to fully implement the accord.

In an address to a gathering of Basij forces in Tehran on November 23, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei made it clear that implementation of the bill to extend sanctions on Iran for 10 more years will translate into a breach of the JCPOA.

“If such extension (of anti-Iran sanctions) is implemented and comes into force (in the US), it will be definitely a violation of the JCPOA,” the Leader said at the time.

“They (Americans) should know that the Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly show reaction to it,” Ayatollah Khamenei underlined.

UN Syria Envoy Urges Nusra Front to Leave Aleppo

According to a report covered by Mehr, on October 6, de Mistura proposed to accompany al-Nusra Front militants if they decided to leave Aleppo with arms and to head for the city of Idlib or somewhere else.

According to the UN official, if the military activities in Aleppo continue, the eastern part of the city will be destroyed, Sputnik reported.

“The most urgent thing that we are going to ask for at the moment is actually shelter. Winter and places for people to be, winter is coming across. Now, I renew in this connection our request to al-Nusra to leave eastern Aleppo on a safe passage. This will contribute [to] avoiding bloodshed and increase our leverage in insisting for an urgent pause,” de Mistura told a briefing.

Iran and China Are Safe Harbours of Asia: Larijani

In a message broadcast on China’s Phoenix TV, Larijani referred to the great antiquity of Iranian and Chinese civilisations, describing the two countries as the safe harbours of Asia.

According to a report by Fars, as translated by IFP, Larijani in this message called on the two countries to strengthen and develop bilateral relations.

“On New Year, we wish joy and fulfilment for the Chinese. They are a civilized nation; one of most ancient cultures in Asia. I wish them a year of great happiness,” he noted.

“The Chinese have made great progress during recent years. We are glad to see China has a high status in today`s world; we hope that the relationship between Iran and China will be reinforced in the New Year.”

“Iran, like China, is an ancient civilisation; we can refer to the two countries as the harbours of Asia,” he went on to say.

“We attach importance to China’s development, so does China to Iran’s progress. The development of scientific, security-related, economic, cultural and politic relationship between Iran and China would be helpful to the future of region and the world,” stated Larijani.

What Will Happen after US Senate’s Extension of Anti-Iran Sanctions?

US

According to a report by Fars, as translated by IFP, although the extension of Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) has received more than two-third of US Congress’ votes, US President Barack Obama is still able to veto it.

However, the POTUS’ veto is not that much likely. After Obama’s possible veto, the US Congress should once again put the extension of ISA to votes.

If the extension once again receives more than two-third of US Congressmen’s votes, Obama’s veto will be overridden and ISA will be extended.

US Extension of Iran Sanctions Is a Violation of JCPOA: Iran

Iran Appoints Female Ambassador to Denmark

“As declared repeatedly by Iran’s high-ranking officials, the recent approval of extension of sanctions against Iran by the US House of Representatives and Senate is contrary to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the US obligations under international law regarding non-interference in other countries’ internal and international relations,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in a statement released on Friday.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has demonstrated its commitment to its international undertakings, he said, stressing, however, that Tehran has taken all appropriate precautions to safeguard the Iranian nation’s rights in any conditions.

Extension of Anti-Iran Sanctions ‘Clear Breach’ of JCPOA: Nuclear Chief

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) also denounced the extension of sanctions as a “clear violation” of the JCPOA, Tasnim reported.

“This act (the Iran Sanctions Act) does exist currently but the US president has suspended it… but if the law comes into force again, it would be a clear breach of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” Ali Akbar Salehi told the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Friday.

He further pointed to a possible appropriate reaction to the US legislation by Iran and said the Islamic Republic has taken necessary precautions and is braced for the US moves.

Salehi added that possible reactions to the US violations of the JCPOA are not going to be made public for the time being.

The US Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another decade.

The measure passed by 99-0. It passed the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected President Barack Obama would sign it.

The ISA will expire on Dec. 31 if not renewed. The White House had not pushed for an extension, but had not raised serious objections.

While the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) came into force in January, some Iranian officials complain about the US failure to fully implement the accord.

“They (Americans) should know that the Islamic Republic of Iran will certainly show reaction to it,” Ayatollah Khamenei underlined.

Drug Addict Receives 30-Year Prison Term after Torturing His Wife

Azam

According to a Farsi report by Hamshahri Newspaper, a drug addict who had imprisoned his wife and two little daughters at home and tortured them occasionally has been sentenced to 30 years and six months in prison.

The victims, “Azam” and her two little children, Haniyeh and Hediyeh, live in northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad. The husband of this woman used to torture them; the last time he did so by imprisoning them at their home for 21 days. He even deprived them of water and food, beating the wife and children regularly.

He put Azam in a metal chest to suffocate her by depriving her of oxygen. He went so far as to put out a fire under the chest to burn her feet! He had no mercy for her little daughters, either: He broke the jaw of Haniyeh and kept beating Hediyeh.

Azam - TortureHis criminal acts weren’t kept secret, though: the police arrested him and started its investigations. All the evidence was against the abuser; and he appeared in the third branch of Criminal Court No. 1 of Khorasan Ravazi last month.

Marziyeh Mohebbi, the lawyer of Azam, announced that the husband has been condemned in the court.

“The jury sentenced him to an overall of 30 years and six months in prison,” she noted.

“He is sentenced to 15 years in prison on charge of kidnapping, imprisoning and concealing, 10 years for his attempted murder, 5 years for battery and wounding others by knife, and six months of prison for child abuse,” she added.

The court has also sentenced the man to pay an indemnification because of injuring his wife and children. There were 27 counts of burning, nasal fracture, eyes’ vein damage, etc.

“This is a fair sentence, because all the tortures Azam suffered have been considered while issuing it, including putting her in a metal chest and putting out a fire under it, wounding by knife, burning the body, the 21-day imprisonment in home, depriving the woman and children of water and food, the battery and wounding by punching and kicking and abusing children,” Mohebbi noted.
