Iran’s Customs Office Ranks Third in Fight against Smuggling

Iran’s Customs Office

In the latest ranking of the World Customs Organisation’s Centre of Information and Security, Iran was ranked third in the fight against violation of customs regulations and smuggling of goods, coming after New Zealand and Pakistan, as announced by Iran Customs Administration.

According to a Farsi report by Kayhan newspaper, during the 28th RILO (Regional Intelligence Liaison Office) Asia/Pacific National Contact Points (NCP) Meeting in Seoul, South Korea’s capital, it was officially announced that Iran held the world’s third position.

During the meeting, Iranian delegation delivered a report on Iran’s findings and measures to combat customs violation, smuggling, drugs, and prefab and psychotropic substances.

Sharing their experiences in fight against customs violation, the members learned about the latest methods and operations. 53 people participated in the meeting, including delegates of international organizations (RILO Asia/Pacific, RILO for Western Europe, Asia/Pacific Office for Capacity Building, the United Nations Environment Programme), Customs affiliates (Japan, Russia, Britain, the United States), and 19 countries (Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Cambodia, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam).

Ku Klux Klan Member Gets 30 Years Prison for His Plot to Kill World Muslims

Scott Crawford

According to a report covered by Al Alam in Farsi, Glendon Scott Crawford, 52, a Navy veteran and a member of the Ku Klux Klan, was found guilty in August 2015 of conspiring with another man to build a radiation dispersal device, dubbed a “death ray” by tabloids.

Crawford is the first person to be convicted under a law barring attempts to acquire or use a radiological dispersal device, which combines conventional explosives, such as dynamite, with radioactive material. Congress passed the statute in 2004 to punish individuals who try to set off a so-called “dirty bomb.”

He was convicted on three counts, including conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Crawford’s co-conspirator, Eric Feight, pleaded guilty in connection with the case and was sentenced to eight years and one month in prison, The Guardian reported.

Authorities said Crawford, who worked at General Electric Co , carried out extensive research on radiation dispersal devices, learning what level of emission was required to kill humans and conducting reconnaissance on potential targets, including a local mosque.

In conversations recorded without his knowledge by a confidential law enforcement source, Crawford spoke often of his hatred of Muslims and said he would go after Obama in the White House with the device.

Iranian Rural Population Is Decreasing

village

“The undesirable living conditions in villages lead to abandonment of rural areas,” said Mohammad Mousavi, the Director General of Rural Development Department at the Iranian Ministry of Agricultural Jihad.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, he went on to say that based on 1956 census, 60% of Iranian population lived in villages that year; the number is reduced to 20%, though, in 2015.

“The drought has been a main cause for leaving the villages,” he added.

Bahrain Regime Summons Top Cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim to Court

Sheikh Qassim

Bahraini police forces used tear gas against Sheikh Qassim’s supporters around his residence in the western Diraz region of the country in a brutal effort to gain access to the doorway of the house on Wednesday.

The supporters of the cleric, who have been camping out at the area as a protective measure for his safety, called on more people from the local population to join them following the police raid.

The sit-in protest outside of the cleric’s home entered its 185th day on Wednesday, according to Press TV.

The sit-in protest began on June 20, when Bahraini authorities stripped the 79-year-old cleric of his citizenship, less than a week after suspending the country’s main opposition party, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, and dissolving the Islamic Enlightenment Institution — founded by the senior cleric — and another opposition Islamic association.

Following the provocation against the cleric, a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) publicly declared that the sanctuary of the top cleric was a red line, the violation of which would set fire to Bahrain and the entire region.

Major General Qassem Soleimani, who commands the IRGC’s Quds Force, said in June that overstepping the red line would leave the people of Bahrain with no other choice but armed resistance.

Bahrain’s Interior Ministry had alleged in a statement that Sheikh Qassim actively sought the “creation of a sectarian environment” through his connections with “foreign powers,” charges that were widely understood as regime attempts to silence the dissident cleric.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has seen a wave of anti-regime protests since mid-February 2011. Scores of people have been killed and hundreds of others wounded or detained in a crackdown that Manama has been carrying out to crack down on dissent since then.

Soon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — themselves repressive Arab dictatorships — deployed forces to Bahrain to assist the Manama regime’s crackdown on the peaceful protests.

Human rights groups have frequently censured the Al Khalifah regime for rampant human rights abuses against the opposition and anti-regime demonstrators.

The regime has imprisoned other senior clerics in the past. Sheikh Ali Salman, one such figure, has been sentenced to nine years in jail in a sham trial.

Photo of Iranian FM’s Bodyguard in Moscow Summit Goes Viral

Iranian FM’s Bodyguard-Moscow

According to a report by IFP, there was an interesting moment in the Tuesday trilateral meeting between Iranian, Russian, and Turkish foreign ministers.

At this moment, whose photograph has gone viral, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s bodyguard is standing next to Turkish FM Cavusoglu’s bodyguard and staring at him all the time.

The bodyguard’s move came after the Monday night assassination of Russian Ambassador to Ankara by a member of Turkish anti-riot police force.

Iran’s Parliament Should Respond to Tel Aviv’s Pan-Turkist Moves: Politician

Israel-Azerbaijan

According to a Farsi report by ICANA, Mansour Haqiqatpour, an Iranian politician and a former MP, said, “The ones who chant the slogans of pan-Turkism in the region are led by the Zionist regime of Israel.”

Mansour HaqiqatpourHaqiqatpour noted that separatist plots have been hatched in north-western Iran.

“Based on detailed information, CIA and Mossad – the intelligence agencies of the US and Israel – promote separatism in the name of World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) with the financial support of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council,” he added.

“The support of Israel for the World Azerbaijanis Congress is being revealed; Iranian intelligence and security services must strongly confront it.”

He went on to say that Iranian Parliament members should have responded seriously to Israeli Prime Minister’s suspicious moves.

He further criticized Azerbaijan Republic for expanding its military cooperation with Israel.

“Israel has been officially active in Azerbaijan since 2005. Israel carried out its plans to transfer the Jews of this country to the occupied territories, and to inject money into Azerbaijan’s banking system and oil industry.”

“Iran tries to be in good terms with Azerbaijan as a neighboring country; Baku, however, resorts to violence to suppress any Islamic movement,” the Iranian politician said, referring to Baku’s anti-Islamic acts, which he believes have led to a widening gap between Azerbaijani government and people.

UN Envoy Welcomes Iran-Russia-Turkey Statement on Syria

Staffan de Mistura

“I welcome the joint statement and find it helpful in promoting the resumption of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva on 8th of February,” de Mistura told Sputnik on Wednesday, commenting on the statement issued by the sides following the talks in Moscow on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, foreign and defence ministers of Russia, Iran and Turkey met in Moscow to discuss the situation in Syria, including Aleppo.

The countries agreed on a joint statement on the revival of the political process to end the conflict in Syria. The document confirmed the respect of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria as a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, democratic and secular state.

The ministers also noted the importance of extending the ceasefire and voiced their willingness to become guarantors of the forthcoming agreement between Damascus and the opposition.

After OPEC Deal, Iran Is Now Trying to Attract Foreign Investment

OPEC Fund Earmarks $500,000 to Help Iran Fight COVID-19

According to a report by IFP, few countries have benefited from the oil market’s 2016 recovery like Iran.

Since sanctions on its economy were eased in January, the Persian Gulf producer has doubled exports as prices rallied and won approval from OPEC last month to pump even more while other members cut. The key to continued growth will be attracting foreign investment to the energy industry.

“Iran is definitely better off than they started the year,” said Carsten Fritsch, an analyst at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt. “Further expansion plans for production have reached a plateau. They need foreign investment.”

While most Persian Gulf nations struggled with lower oil revenue after prices plunged to less than half of their 2014 levels, Iran, with a population about three times larger than Saudi Arabia’s and an economy less dependent on crude, accelerated its growth.

To keep up the momentum, Iran is trying to attract more than $100 billion in foreign investment for an industry deprived for years of technology and funds, Bloomberg reported.

The country goes into 2017 strengthened by its achievement of avoiding output cuts after OPEC agreed in November to a collective reduction for six months starting Jan. 1. “That is a big success,” Fritsch said.

Iran has been exporting more crude since April than it did under sanctions, and sales last month reached about 2.4 million barrels a day, the International Energy Agency said in a report on Dec. 13.

“There is a potential need for more crude by the end of next year,’’ Jaafar Altaie, managing director of Abu Dhabi-based consultant Manaar Group, said by phone from Abu Dhabi. “Iran will have to fight for those sales.’’

Iran was OPEC’s second-biggest producer behind Saudi Arabia until sanctions were intensified in 2012, but it lacks the expertise needed to add the roughly one million barrels of daily production capacity it’s targeting by the end of the decade, Fritsch and Altaie said.

While the country has reached several preliminary agreements with international companies, it has yet to sign any concrete deals to boost crude production.

Iran also has the world’s biggest natural gas reserves, and in November it clinched a $4.8 billion gas development project with energy giants Total SA and China National Petroleum Corp. The country aims next year to bring companies such as Total, Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Russia’s Lukoil PJSC and Gazprom Neft PJSC back to its oil fields.

“There are positive signs with these recent deals,’’ Altaie said. “The big question is whether Iran can translate that into final contracts.”

Iraqi Politician Blames Iran for Twin Bomb Attacks on Kurdish Party HQ in Erbil

photo_2016-12-21_12-02-41

According to a report by IFP, a double explosion, reported to be from a motorcycle bomb, targeting the KDP-I headquarters in Koya – a town near the Iranian border in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region – has killed seven people.

Jalal Karim, the Deputy Minister of Interior at the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), noted that 5 party members, one security force, and a child have lost their lives in these attacks.

Without giving further details, he noted that several others have also been wounded, DW reported.

photo_2016-12-21_12-02-30Meanwhile, Hoshyar Zebari, the Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq and a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, claimed in a post in his Twitter account [which he later deleted] that Iran’s Intelligence Ministry and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) have been behind the terrorist attacks.

However, his claims seem to be part of a project to provoke Kurdish Iranians and disrupting the country’s national security.

Such allegations by a former Kurdish official, particularly one who has been in charge of the Iraqi central government’s foreign affairs, can be part of a plot to influence Tehran-Baghdad relations, the operation to liberate Mosul, and disrupting peace in Western Iran.

It can also be a warning by the Kurdistan Regional Government to the anti-Iran party (KDP-I) and Iranian dissidents. Masoud Barzani, the KRG President, does not want to step down, and such crises might help him stay in power.

Critical situation in the region can attract the attention of Iran and Iraqi central government, and make them support Barzani to remain in power. He might be conveying the message that peace can only be secured with his presence, and even the rumours of his absence might cause such critical situations.
