Efforts to Prevent Demolition of a Villa in Tehran Designed by Gio Ponti

Namazee Villa

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, after the Committee for Conservation of Historical Houses in Tehran announced that Villa Namazee, a villa in northern Tehran designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti, has been taken out of the list of registered national monuments and will be demolished and replaced by a 20-story five-star hotel, Matteo Licitra, the grandson of Ponti, asked for help to conserve this great heritage of architecture in an email to the committee.

“I intend to travel to Tehran to meet the current owner of villa, at least to buy some interior decorations designed by Gio Ponti, my grandfather, before the villa is demolished and replaced by a hotel,” he wrote in his email.

A young Iranian entrepreneur and architect recently called for the conservation of the villa in a televised program and attracted public attention to Ponti’s work.

It is said that Villa Namazee is one of the rare remaining buildings designed by Gio Ponti, the well-known Italian architect of 20th century.

Following the news and comments passed by authorities of Iran’s Cultural Heritage Organization and Tehran Urban Planning and Research Centre, a petition was drown up to save this magnificent work of architecture. Copies of this petition have been sent to UNESCO, the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and the Polytechnic University of Milan in Italy.

Up to this moment, the petition have been signed by more than 4,700 people, including architects, artists and cultural heritage supporters from different nations such as Iran, Italy, France, Switzerland, Poland, Denmark, Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, Belgium, the United States, Britain, Germany, Canada, Venezuela, Peru, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Guatemala, etc.

You can read some comments by the supporters below:

Anders Schepelern, Copenhagen, Denmark: This in an important part of Iranian history.

Pierluigi Serraino, California, US: Gio Ponti is one of the great masters of Modern Architecture and this building is one of his masterpieces.

Libby Kauper, Los Angeles, US: Gio Ponti’s architecture should be designated as an historical landmark. Please do not demolish!

Tina TYRELL, Brooklyn, NY, US: I love architecture and Gio Ponti and it’s important to cultural heritage to respect it!

Rita PACIFICI, Switzerland: Gio Ponti was inspired by “The joy of living there”. It should be absolutely preserved.

Phillip Arnold, Australia: Iran’s cultural heritage extends to the twentieth century and should be protected. This is an exemplary work by an important architect.

Paola Lenzoni Milli, Italy: Gio Ponti’s masterpiece is untouchable! People would pay to visit it, you should build next to it, without demolishing it. The inclusion of this house in your hotel would give high value to it! It could become a very high paid suite.

Angela Manetakis, Greece: These buildings need to be protected. They will be the ‘ancient sites’ in centuries to come.

Alexandra Nuñez, Caracas, Venezuela: By demolishing it, you destroy the history of architecture, and it is going to be forgotten in the future.

Dung Ngo, New York, US: This house is not just a modern architectural masterpiece, it is a symbol of international cultural exchange.

J Hall, United Kingdom: This is an architecturally brilliant building and to destroy it would be an act of cultural vandalism.

Jutta Heupel, Italy: Because it’s important to take care of traditional architecture. It doesn’t need to be Italian, Danish or French. It’s to keep the culture of these projects.

Kenn dallas, Dallas, US: This is an incredible piece of midcentury modern history. Please save it!

Rachel Levy, Paris, France: If this petition fails, please, at least produce a 3D laser scan of this “monument” (inside and out, including materials), to be able to reproduce its replica one day… – For education and nostalgia purposes!

Linda Phipps, Oakland, US: Ponti is a major figure in Italian modernism and his work in Iran is rare and thereby even more precious. Please do not demolish this building as it marks a significant point in Iranian architectural history and its interaction with the West in the post-War period.

Steven Price, Hollywood, US: One of Ponti’s 3 best and most substantial houses. PLEASE consider incorporating this treasure into any new build.

Iran Offers Condolences to Russia over Deadly Plane Crash

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi expressed deep sympathy with the Russian government and nation, as well as the families of the victims.

The Russian Tu-154 plane with 92 people on board, including a famed army choir, crashed into the Black Sea shortly after taking off on Sunday morning. The military plane had departed from the southern Russian city of Adler and was heading toward Latakia in Syria.

A list of passengers and crew published by Russia’s Defense Ministry showed that 64 members of the renowned Alexandrov Ensemble, the army’s official choir, and its conductor Valery Khalilov were on board the plane.

Members of the choir were travelling to Syria to celebrate the New Year with Russian troops. The Defense Mininstry said a widely revered Russian charity doctor was also on board the plane in addition to a Russian army general and five colonels.

Iranian Banks Authorized to Sell Dollars at Free Rates

Dollars

A statement on CBI’s website called on merchants and traders to refer to the authorized banks and purchase their required dollars, adding that this would channel foreign exchange operations by individuals and entities to banks and decrease their risks.

The statement added that the banks could also purchase the foreign currencies of exporters of non-oil products “at a rate set by agreement between the bank and the customer”.

This, it emphasized, would be carried out through diplomatic missions that are based in Iran as well as the representation offices of foreign investors and also the branches of foreign banks.

The banks could accordingly sell the foreign currencies thus purchased themselves or through other banks and even certified exchange shops, CBI’s statement added.

Iran operates two exchange rates, a free market rate, which was at around Rials 40,140 to the dollar on Saturday and an official rate used for some state transactions, set by the central bank at around Rials 32,300, Reuters reported.

In recent months, the CBI has raised the official rate gradually to shrink the gap between the two. It has said it wants to unify the exchange rate, to make the economy more efficient and create a level field for private firms competing with state institutions with access to cheaper foreign exchange, Reuters added.

The CBI further emphasized in its statement that it would provide the required dollars for the banks to enable them to meet customers’ needs.

However, the media in Tehran are already voicing doubts if this policy would ever work.

The Persian-language newspaper Ta’adol quoted an unnamed trader in Tehran currency market as saying that the CBI through the new policy was trying to bring the chain of supply and demand of foreign currencies under its own control.

The ultimate objective, the trader added, was to reduce the role of middlemen in increasing the rates of foreign currencies – particularly the dollar.

“But the truth is that this kind of supplying foreign currencies to the market [as devised by the CBI] cannot answer all market demands,” Ta’adol quoted the trader as saying.

“This is due to the red-tape that exists in banks for trading foreign currencies.  Therefore, most customers would still prefer to refer to the foreign exchange shops”.

Another Persian-language newspaper Jomhouri-ye Eslami criticized CBI’s move and said it would only deteriorate the situation of the Rial against the dollar in Iran’s foreign currency market.

“Is this move … not an example of CBI’s interference in the foreign currency market at the current juncture that the dollar has been rising rapidly?” wrote the daily.

“This is a question whose answer will emerge within the next days”.

US Had an Eye on Iran When Starting Its Interference in Syria: IRGC General

Arms Embargo Won’t Affect Iran’s Defence Power: Top General

Brigadier General Hossein Salami, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s second-in-command, said in a televised interview on Saturday that Syria was the first step in a scenario meant to circumscribe Iran’s regional influence by gradually approaching its borders and entangling the country in a crisis at home.

Syria has been experiencing foreign-backed militancy since 2011. The US, Turkey, and some Persian Gulf countries, primarily Saudi Arabia, have been generously providing ideological, political, and financial support to the militants operating to oust the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Washington and dozens of its allies invaded Syria in 2014 with the supposed aim of eliminating the Takfiri terror group of Daesh, which they have signally failed to dislodge.

Salami further highlighted the defeats of foreign-backed militants in Syria’s strategic northwestern city of Aleppo, saying the US and its allies failed in the initial phase of the scenario aimed undermining Iran as a regional player.

If successful, the scenario would have eliminated Syria, one of Tehran’s allies and main supporters of the anti-Israeli resistance movement in the region.

Salami said Washington showed up in Syria to undercut the resistance drive, depose the Syrian administration, and partition the Arab country before heading to Lebanon and Iraq and eventually reaching Iran.

In the event the push had yielded result, Washington would have restored its dominance in the region, he noted.

Aleppo’s liberation however, reversed US fortunes and put its policy in a nosedive, said Salami, adding that the latest gains by the Syrian army also gave a drubbing to the Saudis and Israelis, who likewise strongly contest Assad’s leadership.

“Although, the victory in Aleppo is limited to the boundaries of a city when looked at in a physical and geographical light, but it is absolutely a development of international repercussions given its political and strategic aspects, which considerably affect the sphere of the influence of great powers,” Salami asserted.

Iran’s FM Wishes Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year

Mohammad Javad Zarif

In a post on his Twitter account, Zarif wished “a very Happy Christmas and peaceful 2017 to all.

“May the miracle birth of Jesus Christ bring peace to our troubled world,” he added.

He also cited the verses 20 to 30 of ‘Mary’ Surah of Holy Quran, in which Jesus Christ, a baby at that time, miraculously opens his mouth and talks to other people.

Huge Bomb Left over from WWII Forces Mass Christmas Evacuation in German City

According to a report by IFP, authorities in the German city of Augsburg have evacuated more than 54,000 people from their homes while a giant 1.8-tonne bomb from World War II is defused.

Officials have sealed off the city’s medieval cathedral and city hall.

The evacuation affects some 32,000 households in the centre and involves some 4,000 police and firefighters, according to the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

The evacuation is one of the biggest in Germany, where it is not unusual to find bombs from the war.

In 2011, about 45,000 people were evacuated to remove a bomb in Koblenz.

Augsburg officials have kept some schools open for evacuees who cannot stay with family or friends.

Bomb-GermanyPets will be allowed and public transport is free, Sky reported.

Police say it was impossible to say exactly how long it would take to make the bomb safe.

Augsburg, in Bavaria in the south of Germany, was heavily bombed during the war, and large parts of the city were destroyed on 25-26 February 1944, when the city was attacked by hundreds of British and US bombers.

Almost all newspapers on Sunday highlighted the United Nations Security Council’s Resolution against Israeli settlements, which was passed after US refused to veto it.

The remarks allegedly made by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a recent closed parliamentary session also remained a top story today. A conservative MP disclosed that Zarif has regretted trusting his US counterpart’s words, but Foreign Ministry has categorically denied such comments. Meanwhile, the MP, Javad Karimi Qoddousi, has vowed to broadcast the audiotape of Zarif’s remarks to prove his words.

Christmas and the advent of new Christian year also received great coverage in today’s papers. The celebrations in Tehran and President Hassan Rouhani’s congratulatory messages to world leaders and Pope were among the issues covered today.

CIA Chief Admits US Role in Syrian Bloodshed

US CIA Director John Brennan

“I think we always like to say that we wish that we would have been able to make a difference, in a way that would have prevented the slide and the situation there,” CIA Director John Brennan said in an interview with National Public Radio.

“There’s no way you can divorce yourself, emotionally or mentally, from these situations that you play a role in,” Brennan said, adding that he “felt some responsibility for the horrific bloodshed” in the Syrian conflict.

The CIA chief further insisted that the resounding defeat of militant groups in Aleppo would not constitute an end to the armed campaign against the Syrian government.

“This insurgency is not going to go away until there is some type of viable and genuine political process that will bring to power in Damascus a government that is representative of the Syrian people,” he claimed, without explaining how a representative of the Syrian people will be determined.

He also acknowledged the US inability to influence developments in foreign lands despite its military might.

“As great a country — as powerful a country — as the United States is, we have, in many areas, limited ability to influence the course of events,” Brennan said.

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed since the onset of the militancy. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.

Christmas Celebrations Banned in Brunei

The sultanate of Brunei

According to a report covered by Kayhan in Farsi, Christians are allowed to celebrate in their own homes, but a new law makes public displays—including any Christmas decorations—punishable by up to five years in prison.

The ban was demanded by Islamic leaders in the oil-rich former British colony. They feared that public signs of the Christmas celebration could tempt Muslims to imitate Christian practices.

Officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs have also reportedly visited local businesses to ensure they are not displaying Christmas decorations, including Santa hats and banners with Christmas greetings.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who has ruled the former British colony for nearly 50 years, introduced the ban on Christmas in 2014, the same year Brunei adopted a stricter penal code, including punishments such as stoning and amputation.
