President Rouhani Calls for Global Cooperation against Terror

In a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault in Tehran on Tuesday, Rouhani said strengthening cooperation among all countries across the world in the fight against terrorism is very important.

He noted that the Islamic Republic as a victim of terrorism, is at the forefront of the battle against this vicious phenomenon in the region, adding that to that end France can also play a key role and help promote stability in the region.

Pointing to the Syrian government and nation struggle against terrorist groups, the Iranian president said, “The Syrian crisis has no military solution and must only be settled through political approaches.”

He added that Syria needed a political change, which should be carried out only by its own people.

Also at the meeting, Rouhani pointed to the nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), between Iran and six world powers, and urged all signatories to the landmark agreement should completely fulfill their commitments under the deal.

He urged all countries to protect and promote the deal “because any damage to it can convey this dangerous message to the world that diplomacy is not capable of solving problems.”

The French foreign minister, for his part, stressed the importance of looking after the JCPOA as an international accomplishment.

Ayrault said the European Union is pursuing a single strategy to safeguarding the JCPOA achievements.

He hailed Iran’s positive role on regional and international issues and expressed hope that the country would continue such a policy.

France’s Support for MKO Terrorists Sends Unfriendly Message to Iran

shamkhani-Jean-Marc Ayrault

In a meeting with visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani slammed the fact that the terrorist Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) is operating freely in France and recalled the crimes committed by the MKO such as the killing of Iranian top officials and ordinary citizens.

“The Iranian nation has not forgotten the MKO’s criminal behaviour and their direct cooperation with former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein during the [Iraqi] imposed war [on Iran in the 1980s],” said Shamkhani.

He noted any kind of support for the terrorist group will send unfriendly messages to Iran.

He touched upon the acts of terror committed in France which left its innocent citizens dead, and reiterated the need to seriously deal with terrorism.

“Adoption of double standards in dealing with terrorism as well as dividing terrorism into good and bad will only result in further violence and crimes,” the senior Iranian official said.

He said the international community needs to take practical steps through a collective and genuine effort to cut off financial, military and other forms of assistance to terrorist groups across the globe.

Shamkhani also welcomed the promotion of bilateral political and economic relations as well as the need to expedite efforts to remove remaining obstacles in the banking sector.

“The sustenance of the JCPOA [nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers] is subject to both sides’ remaining committed to their obligations,” said Shamkhani.

“Deviating from this trend [commitment to the deal] under any pretext and with whatever approach will result in reciprocal reaction,” he added.

Iran-Russia- Turkey Initiative Leads to Most Successful Syria Truce

Elsewhere in his remarks, Shamkhani expounded on the framework of cooperation between Iran, Russia and Turkey to develop and implement political initiatives to settle the Syria crisis, and added the initiatives led to the establishment of the most successful ceasefire in Syria over the past six years and direct talks between the government and militants.

He noted a political solution and dialogue hold the key to settling regional crises and should supersede the military option and use of terror as a tool to subdue political will.

He said the recent political achievements in Syria are the result of the activities of the legal Syrian government.

“If some parties [to the conflict] still seek to remove the legal Syrian president from power and form a political vacuum in the country, or want to work towards disintegrating Syria by raising such issues as the establishment of buffer zones, that will instead contribute to promotion of terrorism and perpetuation of the crisis in the region.”

Restoring Palestinians’ Rights Only Way to Bring Back Peace

Shamkhani praised Paris for holding a conference to express opposition to the Israeli settlement construction and call for an end to the Gaza blockade. It needs international pressure to restrict and counter Israeli occupation and crimes, he said. He went on to say that Europe should contribute to this process by sending clear and strong messages.

“The experience gained over the past decades has sent the message to the international community that the restoration of the Palestinians’ rights is the only way to restore tranquility to the occupied Palestinian territories.

Europe Helping Riyadh Kill Innocent People of Yemen

He expressed grave concern over Saudi Arabia’s stepped up military action against Yemen and the killing of innocent Yemeni people, and hit out at European countries as well the permanent members of the UN Security Council for their silence and inaction in the face of such crimes.

“By continuing to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia and remaining indifferent toward the killing of innocent people and destruction of Yemen’s infrastructure, certain European countries are in fact aiding and abetting Riyadh’s crimes in this poor country (Yemen) and have subjected themselves to judgment by the international court of public opinion,” he said.

For his part, the visiting French foreign minister expressed delight over his trip to Iran and holding talks with senior Tehran officials.

Ayrault added, “The prospects of political and economic relations between Iran and France are very bright in the post-JCPOA era.”

He referred to regular and mutual visits to Iran and France by economic officials of both countries over the past year, and described as very good the efforts underway to lay the groundwork for further enhancement of bilateral economic relations.

“Iran has taken delivery of the first Airbus plane it had ordered, which is a clear sign that the way is paved for boosting economic cooperation between the two countries.”

The top French diplomat thanked Iran for making good on its commitments under the JCPOA without delay, and said the road ahead will definitely serve the interests of both countries on political and economic fronts.

Missile Test Is Iran’s Absolute Defensive Right

“I emphasize the Islamic Republic of Iran’s principled stance that conducting any ballistic missile test by the Islamic Republic of Iran is in full compliance with its absolute rights and international obligations,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday.

He underlined the “defensive nature” of Iran’s missile programs and said none of the country’s ballistic missiles had been designed to carry a nuclear warhead and they were, therefore, not banned under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, Press TV reported.

Resolution 2231 was adopted on July 20, 2015 to endorse a landmark nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Under the resolution, Iran is “called upon” not to undertake any activity related to missiles “designed to be capable of” delivering nuclear weapons. Iran says it is not involved in any such missile work and has no such warheads.

The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that Iran would never seek permission from anyone to defend itself.

He said the country’s ballistic missile tests are not inconsistent with the UNSC resolution and condemned politically-motivated comments made by certain countries over the issue.

Some individuals in the United States are creating hype with political objectives and seek pretexts to decrease the international pressure on them following the US government’s thoughtless decision to prevent the entry of people holding legal visas or shun the responsibility for fully complying with Washington’s obligations under the 2015 nuclear agreement, Qassemi said.

However, he added, the Security Council Resolution 2231 does not grant anyone such excuses.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday cautioned the United States against politicizing the Islamic Republic’s legitimate efforts at reinforcing its defense capabilities.

“We hope that the issue of Iran’s defense program… does not turn into a pretext for political games,” he said at a joint press conference with his visiting French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault in Tehran.

Zarif said all the parties to the JCPOA, including both France and the previous US administration, have attested that Iran’s missile tests have nothing to do with the nuclear agreement.

Nabila Massrali, an EU foreign affairs spokeswoman, on Tuesday warned Iran over its ballistic missile tests.

She added, however, that since Iran’s ballistic missile program was not included in the JCPOA, “the tests are not a violation.”

France Showing Strong Support for Enhancing Its Ties with Iran

zarif

Ayrault told a meeting of Iranian-French business leaders that last year’s nuclear deal with Iran had opened a new era that had already led to a major expansion of relations between the two countries.

He said that protecting the Iran nuclear deal – the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – was “extremely important” for Paris.

The French top diplomat emphasized that it was the JCPOA that opened the way for France to move ahead with the expansion of its relations with Iran in all areas.

Ayrault said the expansion of France’s economic ties with Iran would benefit both countries, adding that Paris had never been so eager to develop relations with any other country.

He further named the deals that Iran had already signed with companies Total, Renault and Airbus as examples of French determination to promote economic ties with the Islamic Republic.

Nevertheless, Ayrault emphasized that the current banking hurdles remaining from the years that Iran was under sanctions still needed to be removed to further facilitate trade between the two countries.

The remarks by the French foreign minister came on the heels of a controversial decision by President Trump to ban Iranian nationals from entering the US.

Apart from Iran, citizens of Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen have also been banned from entering the US for a period of 90 days.

The move drew an immediate reaction from Iran with the country’s Foreign Ministry pledging a response in kind.

Ayrault had criticized Trump’s move upon arrival in Tehran on Monday.  He had called for avoiding any move that he said would promote discrimination against nationals of other countries – what he suggested Trump’s order would lead to.

The French foreign minister – who is heading a delegation of 100 businesspeople in his Tehran trip – had further announced that Paris would double visas for Iranians in 2017 in what was seen as a response to the US ban against Iranians.

Many Iranians living in the US are already expressing shock at Trump’s decision. The worst affected appears to be a community of about half a million Iranians living in Los Angeles.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told the same meeting of Iranian-French business leaders in which Ayrault was speaking that Tehran was determined to promote economic relations with the European countries, specifically France.

Zarif said the volume of Iran’s trade with France tripled after the implementation of the JCPOA and the subsequent removal of sanctions against Iran.  Nonetheless, he said there was still room for both countries to further increase their level of mutual trade.

He further said Iran counted on France – as a party to the JCPOA – to help remove the banking obstacles that were blocking the full exploitation of trade opportunities with Iran.

Airbnb Praises Iran’s Beauty, Lauds Iranians’ Hospitality

According to a report IFP, a few days after US president Trump signed an executive order indefinitely banning Syrian refugees, and temporarily blocking refugees and citizens from six other Muslim majority countries of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya, the American lodging company Airbnb, an online marketplace and homestay network, issued its own response for refugees: “We’ve got a free place where you can stay.”

On Saturday (January 28, 2017) the company’s CEO Brian Chesky tweeted, “Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone not allowed in the US.”

In addition to offering support to Iranian immigrants and tourists as well as refugees from the other six Muslim states, Airbnb, in some of its recent Instagram posts and photos, has lauded Iranians’ hospitability and depicted the country’s beauty, saying it always holds the doors open for, and welcomes, anyone not allowed in America.

In the caption of a photo depicting a young man and a woman standing in front of the alcove of an Iranian mosque, it quotes a foreign tourist, who had visited Iran last year, as saying: “If Paris is the city of love, then Iran is the country of love. I have never seen so much love given so freely. I found Iranians to be some of the most loving, cultured and intelligent people I have ever met.”

In the caption of another photo picturing Isfahan’s Si-o-seh pol (the bridge of thirty-three spans), it writes, “Si-o-se pol, or 33 Arches, is an iconic bridge in Isfahan. Hidden within the archways are tiny tea houses to gather with friends. There’s no better symbol to show the power of what can happen when all we come together.”

Another photo shows the picture of a number of Iranian youths sitting at a table in a beautiful traditional old café in Tehran. Its caption quotes a young Iranian as saying, “The people are what make our global community beautiful and strong. These are some of my best friends in Iran. Every time, I visit [them], they drop everything to make themselves available so we can catch up and see the many beautiful sights that Tehran has to offer. They are all very ambitious people who hope for a better future, either in Iran or abroad.”

In the same caption the company promises: “Our doors are always open. Anyone not allowed in America is welcome on Airbnb.”

The company’s Instagram posts come as no one in Iran can go to Airbnb’s website due to the US sanctions restricting Iranian users’ access to it. Upon writing www.airbnb.com in the address bar of their browsers, Iranians are faced with the following message instead of the company’s page:

“We’re sorry. Airbnb is unavailable in your location. Error code: 451. Airbnb is required to comply with US sanctions laws that restrict the use of our site in certain jurisdictions. Because of this, our services are not available in Crimea, Iran, Sudan, Syria, and North Korea. If you feel you have reached this page in error, please email us.”

Retired Teacher’s Body Organs Donated after his Brain Death

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, the organs of Gholam-Ali Qanbari Hassanabad, a retired Iranian teacher from Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, southwestern Iran, were donated with his family’s consent after he was found brain-dead.

“The organ transplant medical team removed the kidneys and the liver of this 64-year-old brain-dead patient and transferred them to Namazi Hospital of Shiraz,” announced Sassan Abbasi, member of the medical team.

“He was a veteran teacher in this region,” said Hadi Zarepour, head of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province Education Office. “He started teaching in the 1970s, and retired in 2000.”

“This year, the organs of 23 brain-dead patients in this province have been donated.”

With a population of 700,000, the province is ranked first in Iran in organ donation: while 76% of brain-dead patients’ families in Iran give their consent to transplant the organs of their patients, the figure is 82.5% in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.

The organ transplant unit of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Medical University was launched in 2011, and 550 organs of 198 brain-dead patients have been transplanted in five years.

The youngest organ donator of this province was a 19-month toddler, and the oldest, a 71-year-old.

5,000 people from Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad have signed papers for organ donation after death, by which they formally announce their consent to it. Recently an association was also been formed to promote the culture of organ donation there.

Iran and Luxembourg Plan to Remove Visa Restrictions for Travellers

Iran-Luxembourg

Iralux is seeking to pave the way for travelers from the two countries to easily obtain travel visas in Luxembourg and Iran, Mahmoud Kouchesfahani, the executive board member of the Iran-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Iralux) said during an interview with Delano news website on Monday.

“…companies everywhere in Europe, even in the US, are pushing, lobbying in favor of relaxing sanctions or removing all of the barriers to be able to work with Iran,” he added.

“The Luxembourg community has always been very positive about Iran, especially with the history of the country and its culture. People have been traveling to Iran for years. What they like is the people and the reception they receive in various cities,” he went on to say.

Reports suggest that a group from Luxembourg’s young managers’ federation will visit Iran for five days in May 2017, and a new mission is expected later in the year.

The last economic mission from Luxembourg visited Iran in October 2016 with a delegation of 76 people representing 40 companies.

Iraqi Parliament Bans American Citizens’ Entry for 90 Days

iraq

The ban, adopted by lawmakers at a Monday session of parliament, is to apply to Americans entering Iraq.

Lawmakers Kamil al-Ghrairi and Mohammed Saadoun told The Associated Press that decision is binding for the government. Both say the decision was passed by a majority votes in favor but couldn’t offer specific numbers.

Trump’s order includes a 90-day ban on travel to the US by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen, and a 120-day suspension of the US refugee program.

Iranian President Opens Mideast’s Largest Grain Refinery

rouhani

‘Zar Grain Refinery’ located in Alborz province and a mega project of Zar Industrial and Research Group came on stream on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by President Hassan Rouhani.

According to a report by IFP, during the visit, President Rouhani highlighted the significance of Zar Grain Refinery, saying that many countries today are customers of the refinery’s products.

“The value of these grain products is as much as sugar but with 40% lower cost,” Rouhani said, adding the opening of this refinery is a cost-efficient move.

He also noted that the refinery has created a total of 6,500 sustainable jobs, and the government attaches great importance to knowledge-based projects that create job opportunities for young Iranians.

“Zar Grain Refinery has been inaugurated by the private sector using public facilities. Therefore, if we pay enough attention to private sector, we will witness a good move in implementing policies of Resistance Economy,” Rouhani added.

The first phase of the complex which is considered the largest of its kind in the Middle East and the first in Iran, became operational in early November 2014.

The refinery has the advantage of relying on supply, production and distribution and is scheduled in such a way that now it can refine thousands of tons of grain every day for dozens of industrial units and hundreds of food and pharmaceutical units in the country.

It is also the only dry port in Iran situated at the transport intersection in the country with access to the national rail network. These features will considerably decrease transportation costs and boost Iran’s competitiveness in international markets.

Zar Fructose products have entered the market with an emphasis on quality, health and cost-efficiency, targeting the improvement of customers’ health and increasing the quality of producers’ goods.

The first output of these factories include natural sweeteners derived from corn such as a variety of high-fructose corn syrup, glucose syrup, and a variety of starch, Mehr reported.

Other advantages include low storage and maintenance costs, more economic and cost-effective compared to sugar and sucrose derivatives, effective use of time, labour and energy due to the elimination of refining and baking sugar, a higher level of purity compared to other sugars, no microbial contamination, sterile distribution and the product’s more sustainability during storage.
