‘New US Sanctions Aimed at Undermining Iran’s Power’

‘New US Sanctions Aimed at Undermining Iran’s Power’

A specialized meeting of the Saba Cultural-Media Centre has been held to review the new US sanctions on Iran. The meeting was specifically aimed at discussing ways of tackling the new sanctions imposed against the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Here are highlights of the discussion, as report by Basirat news website:

Washington’s new bans against the Islamic Republic of Iran have a well-connected chain aimed at undermining the constituents of power in Iran.

University professor Abu-Mohammad Asgarkhani said at the meeting one of features of the sanctions is that the US is legalizing the permanence of the bans.

“[Washington] suggests these are not only preliminary sanctions, but are bans on the part of other countries as well. In other words, all Europeans are obliged to cooperate in implementing the law. It means the sanctions are not unilateral. It means the JCPOA has no role here, and the law mobilizes all these countries against us. So, the sanctions are a regime,” said Asgarkhani.

“We asked what objectives and rules the sanctions regime has. They themselves said principles are in line with objectives. … The objective is completely clear.”

“Several concepts can be taken into consideration when it comes to sanctions,” he added.

  1. They have numerous and network-like regimes.
  2. They follow a single objective.
  3. They have common concepts.
  4. They are continuous.
  5. They oblige others to implement them.
  6. They are extended from the nuclear domain to other areas, including conventional weapons. This is our initial understanding of the sanctions.

Sanctions: A Long-Term Strategy

Also present at the meeting was researcher Hamed Mousavi, who expressed his viewpoints on the issue.

“They had drawn up a plan under which they were set to target Iranian troops in Syria, that is, start physical combat. But because they were not capable of doing it, another group said they needed a long-term plan for Iran and shouldn’t act emotionally. Overall, one can consider the sanctions as a long-term strategy which would ratchet up the pressure gradually,” said Mousavi.

New Sanctions and JCPOA

Siamak Baqeri also said at the meeting that the so-called HR 3364 law is a unique law. At the same time, it is rules-based and, in fact, is intertwined with a series of other laws. The law does not suggest that it is an accumulation of previous laws. Despite all laws which exist, this law focuses on a certain objective. There are points which have made this law much more secretive than previous ones.

So, in the first place, it will not be right to regard the law as a result of efforts by opponents of the JCPOA in the US. If we look at the trend of the passage of the law, we will see that all American think tanks contributed to it. These show that the end product was not the outcome of attempts by opponents of the JCPOA; rather, it was the result of consensus within the United States.

One of the important features of the law is that it is complementary. The law is a complement to the JCPOA’s unsaid points. This law is a complementary one which focuses on Iran’s defense power. Even if a human rights issue is enshrined in it, it can target our defense power as well. The law says a regional strategy should be devised regarding Iran’s asymmetrical threats. It also says bans should be slapped on ballistic missiles, Iran’s conventional weapons and the IRGC. Therefore, it focuses on undermining the constituents of Iran’s power.

University of Tehran Opens Dorm for Foreign Students

Tehran University’s Deputy for Students’ Affairs, Hassan Behnejad, said in a Farsi interview with the Young Journalists Club (YJC) that this year for the first time the Osku dormitory has been launched for the foreign students.

“This dormitory consists of 15 apartment units. We are trying to accommodate students studying at the central campus and students from foreign countries in these dormitories in the new academic year,” said Behnejad.

He also noted that several other dormitory complexes are being built at the university campus, which hopefully will be operational next year.

“Since the closure of dormitories in early summer we wanted to renovate all the dorms at the university campus for the new academic year.”

“At the moment, we have completely evacuated some dormitories at the university, and equipped them with heating and cooling systems. Two of our dorms which were located elsewhere in the city have been reconstructed and provided with new equipment,” he added.

“Due to a shortage of dormitories at this university in the new academic year, we had to to lease several dorms for students. Given the high costs we should pay, we do hope that this problem will be resolved soon.”

Iran's Persepolis Advances to Semi-Finals of AFC Champions League

Ali Alipour scored an early goal for Persepolis but Kamal Kamyabinia was sent off in the 12th minute for a dangerous tackle on Waleed Bakshwan.

Soon after, the Saudi Arabian team put Persepolis under pressure and Saleh Al Amri equalized the match in the 52nd minute.

Al Ahli could not break Persepolis’ resistance and the Iranian team scored in the 83rd minute with a man down.

First Al Ahli captain Motaz Hawsawi handled the ball in an attempt to clear off his line and the referee awarded a penalty for Persepolis and sent him off.

Substitute Godwin Mensha converted the penalty-kick to restore Persepolis’ lead and Mahdi Taremi added a second from the spot in added time to put the win beyond doubt.

Persepolis will meet Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in ACL semis.

Iran Protecting Syria Civilians, Even Families of Terrorists

Iran Urges Collective Cooperation to Tackle Regional Security Challenges

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani has, in an interview with the Arabic-language al-Vefagh newspaper, weighed in on the latest developments in the campaign against terrorists in Syria. The following are the highlights of the interview.

[Questioned on the transfer of ISIS militants and their families to the Al-Badiyah region in Syria, Shamkhani said] Hezbollah’s move to allow a number of militants under siege to move from an operational front to another is an “operational tactic” and will not change the strategy of fighting terrorists.

A similar incident had earlier happened in Qalamoun region in Aleppo on the Lebanon-Syria border, and armed militants were allowed to move to Idlib after surrendering their weapons. Such a development will have no bearing on the determination to fight terrorists.

We are as determined in fighting terrorists as in preventing human catastrophes against terrorists’ families, including women and children, and this is the difference between the resistance front’s campaign against ISIS and the US-led coalition’s indiscriminate bombardments in which many civilians have been killed.

Some countries which claim to be fighting terrorism lack sincerity and seriousness. What effective measures have these countries and their US-led coalition adopted so far in fighting terrorists or liberating areas held by ISIS or other Takfiri groups.

We have, time and again, received well-documented reports suggesting that the US-led coalition has been trying to manage ISIS rather than fight the terror group, and that it has helped the terrorists flee the battlefield rather than fighting them on occasions when there was a possibility to combat militants.

In order to cover up its backing for ISIS over the past years, Washington is pretending to be fighting the terror group and stopping the implementation of an agreement with Hezbollah to allow the relocation of terrorists’ families in Syria.

So far, we have seen the US and its allies have simply bombarded residential areas, killed women and children, targeted the positions of the Syrian Army and the Popular Mobilization Units, carried out some ineffective limited operations and sent logistical supplies to terrorists.

Today, the resistance front represented by Iran, Iraq, Syria and Hezbollah, are fighting and dealing a blow to terrorists with a steely resolve, sincerity and a brilliant track record. They have managed to inflict heavy defeats on terrorist groups, pushing them into the path of annihilations and saving the world from the widespread danger of Takfiri terrorism.

Many of the resistance front troopers were martyred while fighting to safeguard the security of the regional nations, including martyr Mohsen Hojaji, who was beheaded by ISIS.

Iran Decries US Searches of Russian Diplomatic Buildings

In a Tuesday statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi denounced as ‘arbitrary’ the US government’s seizure and searches of Russian diplomatic buildings on the American soil, saying such moves run counter to international norms and regulations.

“The US government’s seizure of, or threat to use force against the diplomatic buildings of foreign countries in America is condemned, and sets a dangerous precedent.”

“It shows that from now on, no country’s diplomatic missions on US soil will have enough guarantees from the US government that they enjoy immunity,” said Qassemi.

Iran Rejects Amano’s Claim on Inspection of Military Sites

Iran Leader's Top Aide Velayati Infected with Coronavirus: Report

“We will never allow non-Iranian individuals to inspect our military sites at any time or any place, whether they belong to the international associations and organizations or not,” Velayati said on Tuesday.

He went on to say that foreigners are seeking to gain access to Iran’s military facilities on the pretext that the International Atomic Energy Agency has the right to do so.

Velayati’s comments came in response to the IAEA Chief Yukiya Amano’s Monday statements claiming that the IAEA, if necessary, can access Iran’s military sites, and there is no difference between military and non-military sites.

Velayati stressed that in the previous agreements with the IAEA there was no talk of having access to Iran’s military sites; otherwise, the Islamic Republic would not have agreed.

“Amano pretends that he is not informed about this and has no answers about it,” Velayati added.

Chinese Drilling Worker Disappears in Southwestern Iran

A 45-year-old Chinese worker named Cheng Chang Chun has gone missing in the mountains of Masjed Soleyman since Saturday, according to a Farsi report by ILNA.

Apparently, the worker, after completing his work, decided to walk to his resting place with no colleague accompanying him. In his last telephone conversation with one his colleagues Saturday noon, he announced that he had lost his way in the mountains.

Search operations to find this Chinese worker has been underway in the mountains of Masjed Soleyman using choppers and dogs since Saturday night.

Iran’s Khuzestan Province Red Crescent Society officials say search operations to find the missing worker are underway in Tolbozan District of Masjed Soleyman County through air and ground.

IRGC Dismisses Idea of Military Intervention in Myanmar

“It is a false analogy that some take the IRGC’s presence in Syria and Iraq and its confrontation with the Takfiris as a pretext to raise the question ‘why the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has not helped the Muslims of Myanmar so far,” Brigadier General Rasoul Sanaei-Rad, the lieutenant commander of IRGC for political affairs, said.

Speaking in a Farsi interview with the Mizan News Agency, he was referring to the questions raised after an official statement by the IRGC to declare its readiness to assist the oppressed people of Myanmar.

“The advisory presence of Iran in Syria and Iraq came after the official request of the governments of these two countries.”

“We should keep in mind that the geographical conditions of Iran and Myanmar are very different from the geographic proximity of Iran to Syria and Iraq,” Sanaei-Rad added.

He further pointed out the similarities between Takfiri groups and criminals in Myanmar, saying that both of them have just chosen a religious cover.

There is no doubt that the Muslim minority in Myanmar is being oppressed by the government and a form of apartheid is being committed against them, he noted.

“However, we should pay attention to the fact that at the present time tensions should not be created between the sects of Islam and Buddhism.”

Brigadier General Sanaei-Rad also noted that Aung San Suu Kyi, who was formerly introduced as a human rights activist and peace-loving figure in the world, is today committing crimes against the Muslims in Myanmar which are very similar to those committed by ISIS Takfiris.

“It seems that at the local level, an economic mafia is involved, and at the international level, some are trying to expand post-ISIS ethnic and religious conflicts from West Asia to the east of the continent to pave the ground for the expansion of colonialism,” he added.

The plight of Rohingya Muslims who are being massacred by the Myanmar army remained a top story in today’s newspapers.

Another top story was a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency to the IAEA Board of Governors in which Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal was once again confirmed. Several papers hailed the report as an example of the IAEA’s independence from the US.

Newspapers also covered a secret visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Tel Aviv, which was revealed by Israeli media.
