Iran Has No Role in Kirkuk Operation: Leader’s Aide

“Iran has no role in Kirkuk operation and most Iraqi Kurdish people are opposed to [KRG president] Masoud Barzani’s ambitions,” Velayati told reporters on Tuesday after a meeting with France’s special envoy for Syria.

“We saw that almost without any conflicts the region came under the control of Iraqi central government. Barzani must realise and admit that he has made a mistake.”

Referring to the role the United States plays in disintegration of Iraq, he said the Americans built a military base in Syria seeking the breakdown of the government. He sarcastically concluded that if they succeed in disintegrating Iraq, they will succeed in Syria too.

‘Trump Practicing Magic Trick on Iran Nuclear Deal’

Jame Jam newspaper, in a report published a couple of days ago, has weighed in on the latest anti-Iran rhetoric by US President Donald Trump and the objectives behind the remarks. In this report, the newspaper claims the US and the European Union have jointly hatched a plot to change the grounds for achieving further economic gains from Iran’s lucrative market following the lifting of sanctions as per the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

The Art of Distraction

Professional jugglers have a trick named the art of distraction. Through this trick, they deceive their audience by distracting their attentions from the main part of the juggling operation.

Now Trump’s recent speech made after weeks of media hype over its content seems to be a trick by him to distract the global attentions from an important point. A review of the reactions pouring in to the US’s new strategy towards Iran nuclear deal reveals that he has managed to distract the world from a main point: Behind the scene cooperation between the US and the EU to change the JCPOA in their own interests.

Trump made his main point not during his speech, but 30 minutes after it in an address to the White House reporters; however, this point was not noticed in Iran.

Following his anti-Iran speech, Trump addressed reporters in the White House and in response to a question on his talks with his European partners, he replied the Europeans want him not to pull out of the JCPOA.

Trump said he told his ‘friends’ Macron and May to ‘take all the money you can get’ from Iran and ‘don’t worry’ about US sanctions. According to Trump, the Europeans make the most profit from the huge money Iran spends in other countries.

“Emmanuel Macron called up and he talked to me. And I said, look, Emmanuel, they just gave Renault a lot of money. Take their money; enjoy yourselves,” Trump said. He was making reference to the French car manufacturer Renault’s $780 million agreement with Tehran.

If the JCPOA is implemented completely, Iran will be the economic winner of the deal because it will have the upper hand against the interested European investors. So, Iran can set the conditions for the investors and decide which interested investors enter the country first. This means that the Europeans’ plan for investment in Iran may not come true as they expected.

To change the grounds based on their own interests, the EU and the US have adopted a smart strategy consisting of sanctions and threats to not only limit Iran’s military power but also take the most advantage of the JCPOA economic opportunities.

Despite its commitments under the JCPOA, the US is indirectly warning its economic partners against establishing any economic relations with Iran. The new strategy will dissuade international companies from investing in Iran.

Under such circumstances, the companies that dare to invest in Iran will have the upper hand in talks with the Iranian government because they can set conditions for Iran and expect Tehran to accept their conditions under pressure from the US.

Meanwhile, Iran will praise the Europeans for their courage to defy US pressure. A brief review of the lucrative oil deals signed between Iran and French company Total as well as French carmakers and other deals signed with the German and British companies raises a question: why are the Europeans happy with the current situation?

‘Counter-Terror Steps Taken by Iran, Russia Bearing Fruit in Syria’

He raised the issue at the end of his three-day visit to Russia, explaining about his visit and the meetings held on the sidelines of the 137th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Russia’s St. Petersburg.

“Iran and Russia are playing significant role in establishment of security and fighting terrorism (in Syria),” Larijani told reporters.

“In general” he added “our efforts in Syria have yielded result”.

“It needs complementary measures about which talks were held with (Russian President) Putin and other Russian officials,” Larijani noted.

The Iranian speaker pointed to his meetings with representatives of other countries on the sidelines of this international conference and said that officials from other countries shared common stances with Islamic Republic on key issues regarding establishment of security in the region.

Unfortunately, in recent years, the religious and ethnic issues have been used for igniting conflicts in the region, he said, noting that foreign intelligence services are almost behind such provocations.

Iran and Russia cooperation in fighting terrorism in Syria has helped decline of Takfiri terrorism in the war-torn region. Tehran and Moscow in cooperation with Ankara initiated a diplomatic effort for resolution of the Syria crisis. Their diplomatic efforts in the Kazak capital, Astana resulted in establishment of four de-escalation zones in the country.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

Iran, Uzbekistan Discuss Promotion of Ties in All Fields

During the Tuesday talks, Zarif highlighted the longstanding relations between the two countries, and called for promotion of Tehran-Tashkent ties in all fields.

The Uzbek foreign minister, for his part, said he is happy to be visiting the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He also noted that the ministers of oil, gas and trade as well as the Uzbek president’s special envoy for Afghanistan are accompanying him in the trip considering the significance of relations between the two countries.

Elsewhere in the meeting, Zarif and Kamilov discussed development of mutual cooperation in the fields of oil and gas, tourism, consular facilities, technical and engineering services, agriculture, car production, and fight against terrorism and extremism.

They also conferred on holding the meeting of Iran-Uzbekistan joint economic commission, studying the establishment of direct flights, and cooperating on trilateral and quadripartite transit.

Regional developments including those in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria were among other issues discussed by the two sides.

Following the meeting, Zarif and Kamilov also signed a document of cooperation between Iranian and Uzbek foreign ministries.

Iran, France Discuss Ways to Resolve Syria Crisis

During the Tuesday meeting held in Tehran, the two sides conferred on regional cooperation between Iran and France, the roots of Syria crisis, and the ways to resolve it.

Gellet underlined the French government’s determination to end the crisis in Syria in a political way, and expressed the hope that Tehran and Paris would be able to work together and use their influence and role to encourage intra-Syrian talks and help resolve the crisis as soon as possible.

Jaberi Ansari, for his part, elaborated on the three principles of Iran’s policy towards regional crises, which includes fighting against terrorism and extremism, refraining from weakening the central governments, and carrying out political reforms based on the people’s demands.

He also voiced Tehran’s preparedness to cooperate within the framework of these principles in order to restore peace and stability to Syria.

‘US Sees IRGC as Main Reason behind Its Regional Failure’

Brigadier General Yadollah Javani, an advisor to the Iranian Leader’s representative at the IRGC, has written an article on the Persian-language Basirat website, expounding on the reasons behind Washington’s recent verbal attacks on the IRGC. The full text of the analytical piece follows.

 

US’ Strategic Defeats in Recent Years

The track record of the United States, as a country which claims to be the superior power and leader of the world, is one of an empire with major and strategic mistakes which is collapsing. Following the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, the US has been seeking to dominate the world and assume the leadership and international management of the globe. US strategists believe that full domination over the Middle East holds the key to assuming leadership of the world. Since the bloc’s collapse, Washington has implemented costly plans to secure its domination over the Middle East.

“The Greater Middle East” and “The New Middle East” were the names of US plans to achieve its objectives. Washington’s measures to put the plans into effect included a military buildup in West Asia under the guise of fighting terrorism, the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, Israel’s wars against the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah, as well as Palestinian resistance groups, and launching proxy wars via ISIS and other terrorist groups. Nevertheless, contrary to Washington’s belief and estimations, all those plans failed.

During his election campaign, US President Donald Trump put America’s war spending in the region at $6 trillion. He said the White House had spent that amount on wars in the Middle East, but to no avail. He said the money could have been used to build the United States again. Indubitably, those who gave the thumbs up to such huge amount of spending on wars in the region knew well what long-term advantages domination over the Middle East, as a sine quo non for dominance over the world, would have for the United States.

Now, by sustaining material and human losses in Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the US has suffered a strategic defeat. In addition to Washington’s failures, US allies in the region (the Israeli regime and tribal rules such as the Al Saud) are beset by strategic predicaments and shaky situations, an issue which cannot be tolerated by Washington, has infuriated US authorities and made them desperate.

The failure of the United States’ Middle East policies, after spending so much money and suffering losses, is tantamount to the failure of the Americans’ 21st century policies which they had devised to secure domination over the world under the “new world order” name.

 

IRGC, Key Contributor to Failure of US Policies in Mideast

The Americans’ anger with the IRGC has a key reason, and that is they regard the IRGC as the main contributor to Washington’s failures in West Asia, especially in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. From the Americans’ standpoint, the resistance front in the region is under Iran’s command, and the IRGC assisted by Iran’s allies in the region has scuppered all of Washington’s schemes. The Americans blame the IRGC for all their failures and major losses in the region. Former US President Barack Obama had announced that the US had spent around $ 2 trillion in Iraq. In spite of that, Iraq is under Iran’s influence now. Iran’s strategic leverage in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, the occupied [Palestinian] territories, and other countries such as Yemen, is a major source of concern for the White House. The Americans’ are of the conviction that Iran’s stabilizing its influence in the region will sound the death knell for the presence of the West, particularly the US, in the Middle East. The West, especially the US, sees the IRGC as the main entity strengthening Iran’s position in the region.

 

IRGC, Key Contributor to Order in West Asia (Middle East)

The Americans believed they would be able to dominate the strategic Middle East for dozens of years by regulating the regional order and arrangements within the “Greater Middle East” or the “New Middle East” framework at a huge cost. They thought they could manage the world in this way. However, they are seeing that the IRGC is creating the regional order! The Americans were seeking to implement the “Greater Middle East” or the “New Middle East” plans in order to rein in, weaken and deal a blow to Iran. However, that did not happen. Furthermore, the IRGC has safeguarded the 1979 Islamic Revolution and put Iran in a superior position in the region.

The Americans believe Iran is promoting its policies in the region via the IRGC. The US Foreign Relations Committee said in an analytical report recently that the IRGC has made headlines in recent years. It says the IRGC has been introduced by domestic and foreign media as the most important military force in the Middle East as well as economic entrepreneurs in Iran. According to the report, the IRGC, as an ideological and loyal entity, is regarded as the most important force to protect the Islamic Republic of Iran’s establishment. Moreover, said the report, the IRGC’s Quds force plays a prominent role in Iran’s politics and the Middle East’s order.

In the eyes of the Americans, the only powerful force that can overcome them in the Middle East is the IRGC. The council’s report says the IRGC is at the forefront of countering the US in the Middle East, adding the US is exhausted in the region. The report says Iranians celebrated the arrest of US sailors in the Persian Gulf in January, and that rear admiral Fadavi warned the US that the IRGC has the necessary power to counter the US.

The US has introduced the IRGC as a terrorist organization, and, by slapping sanctions on it, tries to ratchet up economic pressure on the Iranian nation. The Americans believe the sanctions will chip away at the IRGC and its popular support in Iran. But unlike what they think, the bans will further consolidate unity among Iranians and increase the IRGC’s popularity in the country and in the whole region. The glorious funeral procession held for Iranian military advisor Mohsen Hojaji [who was decapitated by ISIS terrorists] showed the IRGC enjoys a high status among Iranian people. Comments made by Iranian officials nowadays bear witness to the backing for the IRGC.

‘Foreigners More Resolved to Work with Iran after Trump Rhetoric’

Iran’s Economy Minister Massoud Karbasian says the remarks made by US President Donald Trump against Iran and the Iran nuclear deal (known as the JCPOA) has not only not had a negative impact on foreign cooperation with Tehran, but made foreigners more determined to further cement their partnership.

“The United States’ new strategy had no negative effect on international cooperation with Iran; rather, it made foreign sides more resolute,” Karbasian told IRNA in Washington on Monday before leaving for Tehran.

He was there to attend an annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“During my visit to Washington, I had meetings with nine economy ministers from European and Asian countries. All of them believed Iran had lived up to its commitments under the JCPOA,” he said.

Karbasian noted all the ministers he met were of the opinion that Trump’s comments were tantamount to a breach of promises.

He said Trump’s remarks were just rhetoric and inappropriate.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the minister touched upon his trip to Washington and his attendance in the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

He said the trip was an opportunity to attend meetings on issues facing the World Bank, and also to hold one-on-one talks with officials of different countries to discuss bilateral issues.

“Economic and banking cooperation, credit lines, implementation of projects, foreign investment and multilateral cooperation were among the topics discussed in the meetings,” said the minister.

High on the agenda of this year’s World Bank conference, he said, was discussions on taking the private sector on board to finance measures to develop countries.

“They recommended obstacles be removed, so that the private sector will be able to contribute to development projects as well,” he noted.

Japan Expresses Support for Iran Nuclear Deal

During the talks held on Monday night, Kōno threw his country’s backing for the nuclear deal, and underlined the need for all parties to remain committed to the JCPOA.

Earlier on Monday, the European Union’s foreign ministers also expressed their support for the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in light of US President Donald Trump’s decertification decision.

In a statement released during the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg on Monday, the EU foreign ministers strongly backed the nuclear deal, describing it as a key pillar of the international non-proliferation architecture.

After months of anticipation, US President Trump on Friday said his administration “cannot and will not” certify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA to Congress, as he set out a new strategy for dealing with Iran.

Iranian Commander in Italy on Rare European Visit

Admiral Sayyari on Tuesday arrived in the Italian city of Venice as the special guest of the 11th edition of Regional Seapower Symposium of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries, commonly known as RSS.

Speaking to Mehr News Agency¸ Sayyari said he is going to deliver a speech in coming days on the issue of seapower and the experiences of Iran’s Navy in establishing security in Gulf of Aden and countering pirates.

“Italians earlier visited the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas as our guests, and are interested in using Iran’s experiences in providing security for Gulf of Aden,” he added.

This is one of the first visits of an Iranian military commander to a European country, and perhaps the first one to a Western state since the 1979 Revolution in Iran.

The four-day event was kicked off today, October 17, and will be underway until October 20 in Venice.

Iranian Commander in Italy on Rare European VisitDuring the Symposium, which is attended by navy commanders of 50 countries, the top admirals discuss ways to counter illegal activities, technical innovation, and reinforcement of cooperation in marine security.

The purpose of the Regional Seapower Symposium for the Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries is to create a forum where the leaders of the regional Navies can meet and discuss about their common challenges and strengthen mutual co-operation.

In 1995, upon conclusion of the International Seapower Symposium held in Newport (USA), it was stressed that there was no similar regional activity for the Mediterranean and Black Sea area.

On that occasion, the Italian Navy was asked to organize such an event and, since 1996, she has been hosting the Symposium every two years.
