A Look at Iranian Newspaper Front Pages on October 18

The top story today was the remarks made by Iranian officials about the European Union’s call for negotiation with Tehran on its missile program. They particularly covered the warning by Ali Akbar Velayati, an international aide to Iran’s Leader, who said the EU is not allowed to raise the issue of talks on Iran’s regional presence and missile program.

Newspapers also covered the defeat of secessionist Kurds led by Masoud Barzani from the Iraqi central government in Kirkuk, and rumours of their independence referendum being suspended after mediation of Iranian General Qassemi Soleimani.

The Shahrvand newspaper dedicated its front page photo to the dire situation of displaced Rohingya Muslims and Iran’s dispatch of medical and food aid to the minority group.

Some reformist papers also highlighted domestic issues including the 2021 presidential election and criticism of conservatives.

Czech Republic Interested in Investing in Iran’s Steel Industry

The Czech Republic’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Eduard Muřický, who is on a state visit to Iran, said his visit is mainly aimed at closely watching Iran’s progress in steel industry.

Iran has made significant progress in the industry and this has prompted the Czech Republic to invest in this area and import Iran’s productions, a Farsi report by IRNA quoted him as saying.

In a meeting with the top managers of Iran’s Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC), the Czech official went on saying his country has prepared the ground for installing some technologies in the production of steel.

The Czech Republic is interested in launching a joint project with Iran, particularly with the Mobarakeh Steel Company, he added.

The meeting was also attended by the Czech Republic’s ambassador to Tehran Svatopluk Čumba.

For his part, the ambassador called Iran a large developing country and will play a key role in the international affairs in future.

Čumba also said he was moved by the perspective set forth by the Mobarakeh Steel Company’s managers and added Iran and Czech Republic can tap into their capacities for further cooperation.

He went on to say that many of the residents of Isfahan have a positive impression of the Czech Republic as well as the cooperation which the country used to have with the MSC.

During the meeting, the participants also explored ways to expand industrial ties between the two sides.

Mobarakeh Steel Company, located in west of Isfahan, is the largest steel maker of MENA (Middle East & Northern Africa) region, and one of the largest industrial complexes operating in Iran.

German Couple Takes Cycling Trip to Iran

The couple entered Iran from the land border of Astara in the northern province of Gilan, said a Farsi report by IRNA.

In an interview, Michael Jurgen said he along with his wife began their journey six months ago. “We cycled from Germany and arrived in Iran passing through central and eastern European countries as well as Russia and Azerbaijan Republic.”

He described Iranians as ‘very nice and hospitable people’, adding, “I’m sure that we will have a memorable trip to Iran.”

The 29-year-old German tourist said getting familiar with the Iranian customs and cultures was the main reason behind their cycling trip from Germany to Iran.

“We are determined to cycle Iran from north to south within the next 2 months. We are eagerly waiting to see the attractive sites in Isfahan and Bandar Abbas.”

Iran’s Leader Condemns Massacre of Indian Muslims

Speaking in a Wednesday meeting with a group of elite students in Tehran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei strongly condemned Europe for reiterating the US remarks about Iran’s regional presence and missile program, saying that such issues are none of their business.

“Why do YOU have missiles? Why do YOU have nuclear weapons?” Ayatollah Khamenei asked.

“It is not acceptable for us that Europe repeats the US bullying against Iran,” he added.

The Leader also referred to Trump’s remarks against the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and Europe’s support for Iran on this issue.

“The European governments underlined the issue of JCPOA and condemned the US president’s remarks. We welcome such stances, but it is not enough that they only ask the US not to scrap the deal,” Ayatollah Khamenei added, noting that the JCPOA is to their benefit.

“We will not tear the nuclear deal apart as long as the other side does not do so, but if they ripped it apart, we will shred it,” he went on to say.

The Leader further asked Europe to stand against the US practical actions and refrain from interfering in Iran’s defensive issues.

 

Trump’s Stupidity Shouldn’t Distract Iran from US Deceitfulness

The Leader further hit back at Trump’s anti-Iran allegations and said US President Donald Trump shows stupidity, but this should not distract Iran from the Americans’ deceitfulness.

“I don’t want to waste my time by responding to the rants and whoppers of the rude president of the US. It is a waste of time to respond to such a person.”

“The US is an agent of the international Zionism. The US is the creator of ISIS and Takfiri movement. Do you expect the US not to be angry with a force which is standing against ISIS?”

“They are angry because today the Islamic Republic has managed to foil their plots in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and other places,” the Leader added.

“The US president is showing stupidity, but this should not cause us to ignore the US mischief,” he added.

Norway Solar Firm Inks $4bn Deal with Iran

Norway’s Saga Energy signed the deal with Iran’s Amin Energy Developers to install two gigawatts of solar panels in multiple sites around the central desert region.

The contract was signed at the residence of Norwegian Ambassador to Tehran Lars Nordrum.

“Norway is fully committed to the JCPOA (nuclear deal) and this is proof that we have taken the opening very seriously, and we will see more investment very soon,” Nordrum told AFP.

It comes just days after Trump gave a bellicose speech, imposing further sanctions on Iran and calling for European allies to curb their financial dealings with the country.

The new solar project is being financed by a consortium of European private and state investors, and backed by a sovereign guarantee from the government of Iran.

“We hope to build a factory in Iran to build the panels so that we are also generating jobs,” said Saga’s development manager Gaute Steinkopf at the signing.

“I’d like to thank Norway, which has always been one of the best friends to Iran, for this exciting opportunity,” said Saeid Zakeri, head of international affairs for Amin.

The deal was signed less than a month after UK renewables investor Quercus inked a deal worth over half a billion euros to build and operate another 600-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Iran

The work located in central Iran is expected to take three years, with the project coming online in 100 MW phases every six months, Quercus said of its first project outside Europe.

“As Iran opens for business, we are delighted to be taking a leading role in building the country’s renewable energy infrastructure at such an early stage of its development,” Quercus CEO Diego Biasi said in mid-September.

Iran currently has 63 MW of installed solar capacity, chiefly in the cities of Yazd, Kerman, Isfahan and Hamadan. This figure is meager for a country with over 300 sunny days and an average of 2,800 hours of sunshine.

There is an ambitious plan to expand the renewable capacity in the face of an acute air pollution problem in major cities and towns. Iran’s overall power capacity stands at 77,000 megawatts, which is mostly generated in thermal power plants using fossil fuel.

Before Quercus’s deal in September, contracts for about 950 MW of renewable energy projects had also been signed.

They are part of the plan to add 1000 MW of renewable energy to the national grid each year in the next five years but the ultimate goal is to establish a 26,000 MW renewable capacity with $60 billion of investment.

Several Iranian and foreign companies have put on display their latest products at the exhibition, which was kicked off on October 16 and will be underway until October 19.

29 countries are reportedly attending the four-day event, according to Mehr News Agency.

Last year some 302 companies, from Iran and 27 other countries, participated in the exhibition.

This year 25 percent of the companies participating in the exhibition are showcasing their domestically produced equipment. The event is significantly promoting domestic production.

Road and border control equipment, uniforms, armor, and optical equipment are on display in the exhibition.

Iran Raps UN for Silence over ISIS Crimes against Assyrians

In an address to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Russia’s Saint Petersburg, Yonathan Betkolia slammed the human rights groups as well as the UN for their silence over ISIS crimes against the Assyrians and said these entities have closed their eyes to the these crimes.

According to a Farsi report by ICANA, he also referred to the developments in Iraq and Syria which are historical homes to Assyrians and said since the emergence of ISIS in these two countries, the Assyrians have been oppressed.

“These people have seen the most deadly strikes on their thousands-year-old identity and history and were forced to leave their homes.”

According to Betkolia this comes as the so-called democratic and rights groups as well as the United Nations remained silent towards the humanitarian tragedy committed by ISIS.

During the Tuesday conversation, which was the second phone call between the two sides within the past few days, Zarif and Le Drian also exchanged views on regional issues.

While the US administration’s threatening language about the JCPOA has raised concerns in the international community, all other members of the Group 5+1 (also known as E3+3) have backed the multilateral agreement and have confirmed Iran’s commitment to the accord.

Last week, leaders of Britain, France and Germany reaffirmed their commitment to the JCPOA after US President Donald Trump refused to certify the multilateral nuclear agreement.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said they “stand committed to its full implementation by all sides”, noting that they “take note of President Trump’s decision” not to recertify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA to the US Congress and were “concerned by the possible implications.”

After months of anticipation, US President Trump on Friday said his administration “cannot and will not” certify Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA to Congress, as he set out a new strategy for dealing with Iran.

Global Support for Iran to Force Trump to Retreat: Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has hit out at anti-Iran remarks by his American counterpart Donald Trump and touched upon the United States’ enmities toward Iran since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran.

“Such weak and untrue remarks by a US president about the Iranian nation are unprecedented, and, before anything else, indicate the existence of differences and a lack of their (US officials) legitimacy inside the US, and also Washington’s concern over Iran’s growing power and increasing role in international relations,” said the president.

He also said the US president’s pretending to be reneging on US commitments is unprecedented.

“The United States’ revocation of its national obligations as well as the commitments undertaken by the previous US administration such as those related to social security insurance on the one hand, and the annulment of bilateral and international agreements such as the Paris Climate Agreement, UNESCO [deals] and trade pacts, on the other, have put the current US administration on the path to isolation and losing credibility,” he said.

President Rouhani also referred to the international community’s reaction to Trump’s remarks against Iran and the JCPOA.

“Even the United States’ traditional allies such as Europe not only did not get on board with the US government, but immediately and straightforwardly announced, in a statement, their opposition and stressed they will stand by the JCPOA and continue their cooperation with Iran,” he said.

The president further touched upon the US government’s massive propaganda and the Zionist lobby regarding the announcement of their new strategy and executive plan against Iran.

“All the US president did was to repeat baseless accusations and threadbare allegations. Domestic unity and people’s hope on the one hand, and the world’s consistent support for the JCPOA and cooperation with Iran on the other will force US government authorities to retreat from and revisit their policies,” he noted.
