Telegram Officially Unblocked in Iran

Iran’s ICT Ministry on Saturday confirmed that Telegram has been officially unblocked a few days after the restrictions on Instagram and a number of other services like Pinterest, Reddit, Four Square, Zoho, and SoundCloud were lifted.

As a messaging app with 40 million users in Iran, Telegram was blocked following the recent unrest, but officials vowed to open it as soon as possible.

The temporary filtering came after the messenger refused to block a channel that promotes violence and riot in the Islamic Republic.

Telegram had actually closed the anti-Iran channel, named Amad News, for encouraging people to violence after a top Iranian official’s request. The channel, with over 1.3 million followers, was blocked by Telegram after it tried to provoke Iranian people to use violent actions against the Islamic Establishment amid the recent protests.

However, Amad News started its operation in a new channel, and Telegram refused to remove the new one, claiming that the new channel has not yet violated the app’s Terms of Service. This prompted the Iranian government to restrict Telegram temporarily until peace is restored to the country.

New Method Devised in Iran for Cornea Transplant Operation

Researchers at the Iranian Royan Research Institute have managed to expedite the growth of limbal stem cells after the cornea limbus transplant operation by producing an eye drop made from the amniotic membrane.

Limbal stem cells exist at the base of the cornea limbus (the circle around the cornea) and rebuild corneal cells. The cornea is the outermost layer of the eye and is visible when the eye is seen sideways.

According to a Farsi report by the Mehr News Agency, people suffering from the limbal stem cell defect disease have few or no such cells, which does not allow the cornea to produce new cells, hence causing new conditions and finally leading to blindness.

One of the methods to cure the disease is to transplant limbal stem cells for patients suffering from the disease. In order to achieve improved clinical results, Iranian researchers carried out a research where they found out that an eye drop made from the amniotic membrane can speed up the growth of limbal stem cells in patients which undergo cornea surgery.

The researchers at the Royan Research Institute have now commercialized the product.

The research findings have been published in the prestigious quarterly The Ocular Surface.

According to the data released by Iran’s Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology, by the end of 2016, Iran ranked 20th in the world with a total number of 6360 scientific papers in the field of stem cell sciences and regenerative medicine including cell therapy, gene therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, tissue engineering, and biomaterials.

The history of stem cell research in Iran goes back to the first hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

(HSCT) in 1990s. Since 1994, Iranian researchers have published several papers in stem cell-related fields in high impact journals. By 2004, stem cell studies in Iran were developed to include embryonic stem cell research, which led to derivation of new lines of stem cells in the country.

Since early 2005, Iranian researchers have also been engaged in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Publishing valuable articles in credible international journals in these fields has been a continuous trend among Iranian researchers ever since.

The Council for Stem Cell Sciences and Technologies was established in February 2009 in an effort to accelerate the county’s progress in this strategic area and keep pace with other countries. The national document of stem cell sciences and technologies was also approved as part of the country’s national comprehensive scientific map in September 2013 at the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution.

Iran’s headway towards stem cell sciences and regenerative medicine, despite limited investments, reveals the country’s enormous capacity for growth in these fields. In terms of published papers in the field of stem cell sciences and regenerative medicine, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ranked first in the Middle East and Islamic countries and second among the East Mediterranean and North African countries.

It is hoped that upon increase in the investments in stem cell research, Iran would be among the world’s top 10 countries by 2025 in terms of science and wealth creation in this novel area of research.

“Trump’s Obscene Insults to All Nations Show His Little Understanding”

Addressing the First Conference of Asian Cultural Dialogueue in Tehran on Saturday, Zarif lashed out at US President Donald Trump’s recent racist slur against countries, saying that such an approach hindered inclusive dialogue among nations.

“Today, we unfortunately see an individual having assumed power in the United States who has so little understanding that he describes entire nations with obscene and unacceptable and even unbelievable words,” Zarif said, referring to but not naming Trump, who on Thursday described El Salvador, Haiti, and certain African nations as “shithole” countries.

Zarif said, “Such words stream out of the mouth of an individual who deems himself the [chief] executive of a country; that culture, that orientation and approach is an obstacle in the way of a paradigm of inclusive dialogue.”

The top Iranian diplomat said the world has over the past centuries been characterized by a paradigm based on power and zero-sum games, “which has had no result for the people of the world but loss, violence, conflict, and killings.”

Human experience has proven that zero-sum games and the practice of forming alliances to eliminate supposed enemies ends in loss for all the parties involved, he noted, according to Press TV.

Zarif said we are inevitably bound to supplant the “paradigm of elimination” with what he roughly termed as a paradigm of “dialogue in its broad sense.”

“This [new] paradigm is based on inclusiveness, incorporation, and the presence of all [sides] in a process of learning and dialogue,” he pointed out.

The Iranian foreign minister cautioned, however, that the incompetence of some governments has raised concerns and caused social divisions.

Those incompetent governments, he said, have tried to promote hatred and create phobias, among them Iranophobia.

He underlined the need for dialogue to cope with all regional and global crises.

Iran, Chinese FMs Discuss Efforts to Save Iranian Sailors

In a Saturday phone conversation, the two sides talked about the recent tragic incident in Eastern China, where an Iranian oil tanker caught fire after a collision.

Expressing regret over the incident, Wang Yi stressed that Chinese forces have done their best to contain the fire and will continue their efforts.

Chinese rescuers have recovered the bodies of two crew members on the Iranian oil tanker that has been burning since it collided with a freighter last week in the East China Sea. The Chinese rescue forces managed to get into the Sanchi ship for half an hour Saturday morning to find the new bodies.

Meanwhile, 12 Iranian army commandos have been deployed in Shanghai and are ready to begin the operation, and if the conditions are met, the operation will be carried out.

The salvage team recovered the voyage data recorder, or “black box” from the bridge, before leaving the vessel less than half an hour after boarding because the wind had shifted and “thick toxic smoke” had complicated the operation.

One body was recovered from the sea earlier this week, leaving 29 crew members still unaccounted for.

During their phone conversation, Zarif and Wang Yi also conferred on the Iran nuclear deal and the need for all parties to live up to their commitments under the JCPOA.

The talks came after US President Donald Trump on Friday extended waivers of key economic sanctions on Iran for another 120 days but said he was doing so “for the last time.” Trump also ordered the imposition of new sanctions on 14 individuals and entities over alleged rights abuses, censorship, and support for weapons proliferators.

Two More Bodies Recovered from Burning Iranian Oil Tanker

The Chinese rescue forces managed to get into the ship for half an hour Saturday morning to find two new bodies.

Sirous Kianersi, the managing director of National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), said in a Farsi interview with the IRIB News Agency in Shanghai that due to the high level of toxic gases and lack of adequate oxygen, the Chinese forces got into the oil tanker for only half an hour and then left the vessel.

He added that the Iranian army commandos are ready to begin the operation, and if the conditions are met, the operation will be carried out.

Kianersi went on to say that the two bodies were taken outside the Sanchi oil tanker, but the identity of the bodies is still unknown.

State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said the bodies were found on the lifeboat deck of the Sanchi.

One body was recovered from the sea earlier this week, leaving 29 crew members still unaccounted for.

CCTV added that rescuers were able to recover the ship’s data and video recordings.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Minister of Labour, Cooperatives and Social Welfare Ali Rabiei who has been tasked with heading the follow-up committee of oil-tanker-accident arrived in Shanghai Saturday morning.

Upon his arrival, the Iranian minister directly headed to the crisis room at Shanghai airport to coordinate and review the rescue efforts and hold meeting with Chinese authorities.

Afterwards, Rabiei departed for Yangshan Port to stay abreast of the latest developments. Iran’s ambassador to China, deputy chief of Iran Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, and several other officials from Ports and Maritime Organization and the National Iranian Tanker Company are accompanying the minister.

According to the IRIB News Agency, it takes about 15 hours to reach the nearest place to the scene.

The ship, run by Iran’s top oil shipping operator National Iranian Tanker Co, was carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate, an ultra-light crude that is highly flammable, to South Korea.

It was equivalent to about 1 million barrels, and worth around $76 million.

There were 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis working as crew on board. The cause of the collision remains unclear.

It is the second collision for a ship from the National Iranian Tanker Co in less than a year-and-a-half.

In August 2016, one of its tankers collided with a Swiss container ship in the Singapore Strait, damaging both ships but causing no injuries or oil spill.

Iran Condemns US for Imposing New Sanctions

Iran Summons French Envoy over Macron’s Anti-Islam Stances

On Friday, Trump extended waivers of key economic sanctions on Iran for another 120 days but said he was doing so “for the last time.” Trump also ordered the imposition of new sanctions on 14 individuals and entities over alleged rights abuses, censorship, and support for weapons proliferators.

In reaction to the move, the Iranian foreign ministry issued the following statement on Saturday:

In the Name of God,

On Friday, January 12, 2018, the president of the United States, in spite of his one-year efforts to terminate the nuclear deal, was once again forced to extend the binding sanctions relief for Iran called for under the JCPOA. The solidity of the deal and the international support for this agreement have made it tough for Donald Trump, the Zionist regime, and the sinister alliance of belligerent extremists to nullify the agreement or make changes to it.

However, the US president continues to take hostile actions against the Iranian people based on his past-year approach and repeats the threats that he has failed to carry out many times. While Trump is forced to carry out the binding measures included in the JCPOA, he is continuing his past year’s approach, and in order to show his hostility towards the great Iranian nation, he has put some Iranian and non-Iranian individuals on the sanctions list out of desperation under illegal, worn-out, and ridiculous pretexts so as to make up for at least part of his failures.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, while condemning US threats and the addition of new people to the sanctions list, underlines the following points:

  1. The Islamic Republic of Iran, together with other parties to the JCPOA and the international community, has repeatedly emphasized that the nuclear deal is a credible international document and cannot be renegotiated in any way.
  2. The Islamic Republic of Iran explicitly stresses that it will not carry out anything beyond its obligations in the JCPOA, and will not accept any changes in this agreement now or in the future. Moreover, it will not allow that the nuclear accord would be linked to any other matter.
  3. The US government, like other parties to the deal, is obliged to fulfil all its obligations, and if it fails to comply with its obligations under false pretexts, it should be fully held accountable for the consequences.
  4. Over the course of two years after the signing of the deal, the US government has always been violating various parts of the agreement by breaking its pledges and through procrastination and hostile policies. Trump’s past-year policy and Friday’s announcement violates the deal’s paragraphs 26, 28, and 29, and the Islamic Republic of Iran will follow up this blatant violation and report it to the JCPOA Joint Commission.
  5. The decision of the US regime to add a number of Iranian and non-Iranian nationals to its self-created and illegitimate sanctions list is merely a proof of the continuation of US administration’s hostility towards the great nation of Iran.
  6. The hostile and illegal move by the Trump regime in placing the name of Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani in the so-called new US sanctions list shows that Washington has crossed all the red lines of conduct in the international community. It is a violation of international law and a breach of bilateral and international obligations of the United States, which will surely face the strong reaction of the Islamic Republic, and the US will be responsible for all the consequences of this hostile move.
  7. Referring to the lofty concept of human rights to boycott Iranian authorities and citizens by a regime, whose most important allies are the worst violators of human rights and humanitarian law in the contemporary history, is a disgrace to civilized nations and a shame for modern rule, especially when they are imposed by a person obsessed with racist and anti-foreigner mentality whose recent indecent racist remarks against various nations has stirred hatred in the international community and among the American people; a person who has sold billions of dollars in weapons to massacre innocent people in the Middle East and considers provocation of violence and chaos as his honour.
  8. Over the past decades, the US has always had the world’s worst record in suppressing liberal nations and supporting repressive regimes, including unconditional support for the oppressive regime of Shah and the coup against the democratically-elected government of the Iranian people. It is also supporting the occupying, aggressive and repressive regimes, such as the Zionist regime and its regional allies, from the occupied Palestinian territories to Bahrain and Yemen. On the one hand, Washington sheds crocodile tears and claims to be advocating the human rights of the Iranian people using empty slogans and false allegations and, on the other hand, by imposing cruel sanctions, banning the entry of Iranian citizens into that country and other insulting behaviours, calls the civilized Iranian nation “terrorists”.
  9. Imposing illegal sanctions and the hostile statements and moves of the US government against the Iranian authorities and the Iranian nation, which are rooted in the despotic and hegemonic nature of American rulers, have always been considered a failed and discredited policy for public opinion and the vigilant people of Iran and the world. Such actions are due to the country’s frustration with the vigilance of the Iranian nation in confrontation with the interventionist measures designed to create turmoil and crisis in the Islamic Republic of Iran over the past decades, and especially during the recent events.
  10. The United States must learn that all the three powerful branches of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Establishment, which enjoy the support of the great nation of Iran, unanimously do not pay attention to these kinds of double standards and hostile policies against their country, and will respond appropriately to such hostile US actions in due time.

Iran Deploys Commandos to Rescue Its Missing Seafarers in China

Iran Deploys Commandos to Rescue Its Missing Seafarers in China

The Iranian Army Spokesman, Brigadier General Shahin Taqikhani said airborne commandos will start the extremely dangerous operation on the burning oil tanker if China provides them with a chopper.

Referring to the process of rescuing the seafarers on the Iranian oil tanker in the waters of China, Taqikhani told the Fars News Agency in a Farsi interview that after the tragic incident for the Iranian oil tanker and the seafarers, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s army immediately announced readiness for any assistance by sending capable people with special skills.

“To do this, it was necessary to make coordination with various organizations including the foreign ministry. A team of army’s special naval forces composed of 12 commandos, who have received special training for these conditions, have been deployed to China and they are now in Shanghai.”

He added that if the Chinese military gives the necessary instructions and provides the team with a copter, they will do their best to rappel into the tanker to help the seafarers.

Taqikhani also stressed that everyone knows this is a very difficult and dangerous task, but if helicopters are handed over by the Chinese army and they take the risk of taking this action, then the rangers may rappel from high altitudes.

“An official from Iran’s army also held a meeting with military attachés of China and Japan in Tehran Friday afternoon and voiced the concerns of Iranian families and called on them to accelerate the process of assisting,” he noted.

Taqikhani said the military attachés of China and Japan also announced their armies’ readiness for any kind of assistance saying that they have forwarded the request of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the authorities.

Dozens of seafarers are missing from an NITC tanker after it collided with a bulk carrier off Shanghai on Saturday evening.

The collision between the Panama-registered, 164,154 dwt, Sanchi, owned by Iranian tanker company NITC, and the Hong Kong-flagged 75,725 dwt bulker CF Crystal took place around 8 PM on Saturday around 160 km east of the Yangtze River, according to China’s Ministry of Transport.

The tanker Sanchi reportedly capsized and caught fire following the collision. The bodies of three crew members from the vessel have been found while the other 29 seafarers from the tanker remain missing. The tanker had a crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshi nationals.

The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes of oil condensate from Iran to Korea, while the bulker had a cargo of 64,000 tonnes of grain.

Positive News Can Boost People’s Morale: Psychologist

Reza Bafti, a psychologist and family counsellor, has weighed in on the impact of media coverage on people’s morale expressing that the morale of the people, who usually follow the events in the newspapers or the media, is undermined and after a long period of time their minds will be in crisis.

“At times, we see that the media focus only on the dissemination of worrying news and killings, which can increase the stress and depression in society,” Bafti said in a Farsi interview with Fars News Agency.

He stressed that if a study is conducted on the news published in the media, we will find out that the number of negative and stressful news is very high, which can unconsciously do mental and psychological harm to people.

“One’s behaviour is formed by a chain of behaviours.

For example, imagine that in the morning, after leaving the house and in a taxi we hear a piece frustrating news on the radio.

Hearing this news may lead to our improper behaviour towards our colleagues during the day at work.”

“Looking into the psychosocial behaviours and problems of individuals, we find out that a person has heard a negative message over a period of time that it has struck Cymbalta with physical blows,” he added.

Bafti also explained that people are naturally willing to hear good news, but the mood of the Iranians is different from the normal level, and hearing negative news can affect these people more than others.

“People following sports or political news get excited, but the excitement and joy of those who follow sports news is more.

This is while those who are more in touch with political news are more stressful.”

He highlighted that the publication of news with a sense of humour could lift people’s spirit towards joy, adding that it is necessary for the media to make more efforts in the hope of creating cheerfulness in their stuff.

Bafti also pointed out that a policy should be put in place by the media in order to bring joy to the people of a community.

“We must also know that society does not move automatically towards joyfulness and that plans must be made in this regard.”

The psychologist concluded that the publication of literary, poetical, and comic papers has declined considerably, and it is a must to pay more attention to these social needs.

Iran, Italy Sign €5 Billion Investment Deal

Iran, Italy Sign €5 Billion Investment Deal

The accord will open lines of credit to two Iranian banks namely Khavar Mianeh (Middle East) Bank and Sanat va Madan Bank (Bank of Industry and Mine) by Invitalia Global Investment, an Italian state-owned holding, in order to finance investment projects by Italian companies.

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, it is also possible that other Iranian banks would join the agreement.

The construction and production projects of the country, which are run using technology, machinery or engineering services of Italy, can use this finance investment.

Also, all of the public and non-governmental sector projects that have been approved by the relevant organizations and have obtained relevant licenses can take advantage of this facility.

Following the signing of agreements with India, China, South Korea, Denmark, Austria and Russia in recent months, Italy is the seventh country with which a finance agreement is sealed.

Italy is Iran’s major trade partner in the European Union. Latest Eurostat data show that with more than €2.58 billion worth of purchases, Italy was the main export destination for Iranian products during the 10 months to Oct. 31, 2017.

The figure shows a 315% hike compared with the corresponding period of 2016.

The European country was also the second biggest exporter to Iran among other EU member states during the period after Germany, as it shipped €1.38 billion worth of commodities to Iran, up 14.5% year-on-year.

Iran’s top five exported commodities were mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation, bituminous substances and mineral waxes worth an aggregate of €2.323 billion, iron and steel worth €124.2 million, organic chemicals worth €32.6 million, plastics and articles thereof worth €15.9 million and articles of iron and steel worth €14.3 million.
