President Rouhani Offers Condolences over Deaths of Iranian Seafarers

In a message on Sunday, Rouhani said the heartbreaking incident for the Iranian oil tanker in Eastern China waters, which killed all its crew members and personnel, saddened the entire Iranian nation.

He offered his sincere sympathy, and condoled with the great nation of Iran, particularly the bereaved families of the victims, from the bottom of his heart.

The Iranian president wished patience and health for the survivors, and peace for the innocent victims, who were key to the Iranian economy and national might.

“It is now necessary to focus all efforts on identifying the bodies of the victims and decrease the pains of their bereaved families,” he added.

He at the same time urged all relevant bodies, including the ministries of Roads and Urban Development, Petroleum, and Foreign Affairs, to probe into the tragic incident and legally pursue the issue to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents.

Iranian oil tanker Sanchi caught fire last Saturday night after it collided with the CF Crystal, a Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter carrying wheat from the US, about 160 nautical miles east of the Yangtze estuary.

Despite efforts by rescue teams during the past week, only three bodies were recovered from the ship, and the fate of the remaining sailors remained unclear. Those efforts were hampered because of the scale of the fire and heat.

The vessel finally fully sank on Sunday, January 14, and all hopes for finding the missing people faded.

Available evidence indicates that all crew members died soon after it collided with another vessel and a powerful blast ensued.

Mohammad Rastad, a spokesman for the Special Task Force established over the incident, said on Saturday that there was no hope to find the crew members alive.

Thirty two crew members were on board, comprising 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis.

Entire World Unanimously Stands against US: Iran President

Addressing the closing ceremony of the 9th Farabi International Award, Rouhani said the US suffered defeats in two fronts during the past weeks.

“Their first defeat came when they wanted to stand against the world’s public opinion and violate an international commitment,” he noted.

“In the past few days they aimed not to comply with their international commitments, but you saw that many countries stood against it. All countries in the world, except one or two hated regimes, unanimously stood against them,” noted Rouhani.

The Iranian president further mentioned that if the obligations are not respected, it is the end of civilization era in the societies and the world.

“While science and industry develops but the international regulations, religious values, and norms are not respected, and a state does not accept to comply with the commitments of its previous administration, then no commitment would be made anymore.”

Expressing his satisfaction with the failure of the White House to overturn international obligations and wriggle out of commitments to the UN Security Council resolutions, Rouhani said, “This is a great victory for humanity, ethics and law.”

He further noted that with the nuclear deal, we have told the world that the complicated regional and international problems can be resolved at the negotiating table.”

Therefore, he added, this agreement will be maintained forever.

“We proved that the world’s problems can be resolved at the negotiation table. We proved that Iran is honest and our enemies are lying and Iran has never been looking for a nuclear weapon. This has been proven during the negotiations and all inspections, and the IAEA has confirmed it by consensus.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani highlighted that when the IAEA announces the PMD as a complex technical and international case is terminated, it means that Iran has been honest and its enemies have been lying; therefore, this victory remains forever.

The president stressed that the Islamic Republic was working to make the world understand that Iran has the right to continue its nuclear research and development.

“This was something that they had previously banned the Islamic Republic from having access to because of what they were calling Iran’s violations. However, through the negotiations held by all countries and a resolution, the UN admitted that Iran has the right to continue its research and development, and this victory is secured and cannot be ruled out.”

Rouhani also stated that some still do not touch on all aspects of the JCPOA.

“The nuclear deal has some permanent effects that will remain in force forever, but it has some other effects that may or may not remain.”

He went on to say that when the implementation of the deal began on January 16, 2016, the country’s oil revenues have doubled and this is not reversible.

“We also had hundreds of foreign investments. These investments have been made in factories, enterprises, power plants, ports, locomotives and aircraft, and they are irreversible.”

The president added that “our diplomats sealed an agreement that had some deficiencies, but was an accord that Donald Trump has not been able to break down since more than a year ago. This proves the solidity of the deal and the victory of the international obligations against dictatorship.”

Referring to the recent protests in Iran, the president cited the second defeat of the US in its intervention in Iran’s internal affairs.

“Fortunately, Washington suffered defeat both in its intervention in Iran’s internal affairs and also in the case of nuclear deal and the Iranian nation emerged victorious in both,” added Rouhani.

Iran Parliament Speaker Rejects Any Changes to Nuclear Deal

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says the country’s legislature does not accept any changes in the structure of the nuclear deal that Tehran signed with six world powers in 2015, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The top parliamentarian made the comment in reaction to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump who said Washington would pull out of the deal unless changes were made to the agreement.

Larijani said Trump’s speaking of changes would amount to the scuttling of the whole JCPOA, reported the Persian-language Mehr News Agency.

“If they (the Americans) have such thoughts in mind, they needn’t wait for several more months, and they must know that they will end up in failure,” said Larijani.

The speaker also lashed out at the United States for slapping sanctions on some Iranian natural and legal persons.

“The United States’ eccentric behaviour in this regard is such that sanctions have cost the individuals [who are under sanctions] their reputation,” Larijani said.

He also noted that Washington’s excessive demands coupled with its business-like policies have had a negative impact on diplomatic relations.

The top story in all Iranian papers today was the decision by US President Donald Trump to extend the Iran sanctions relief while giving a four-month ultimatum to Europe for modifying the nuclear deal.

The Iranian foreign ministry’s reaction to Trump’s statements also received great coverage. Iran stressed that it will not accept any commitment beyond the current articles of the nuclear deal.

Also a top story was the fate of 29 seafarers on board an Iranian oil tanker which has been burning in Eastern China after an earlier collision.

Iranian Audiences Wonderful: European Theatre Festival Organizer

During their 4-day stay in Tehran, seven European theatre festival organizers held talks with a number of Iranian theatrical figures and watched several Iranian plays.

Ways to introduce Iranian theatre troupes to international festivals were discussed at the meetings. In addition, the delegation pledged to provide the grounds for some performances by European troupes in Iran.

The European group visited Iran last month to get more familiar with Iranian theatres, a Farsi report by ISNA said.

In an exclusive interview with ISNA, two of these directors shared their impression of their visit to Iranian theatres.

Lou Colombani from the Parallel Festival in Marseille said “something notable about the theatres I watched in Tehran was that each of them had its own unique features without trying to emulate European theatres like plays of Shakespeare and Molière.”

He went on to say that the audiences included many young people. “This comes as in Europe, this is the elderly who are the main audiences of the theatres. In some performances, I felt that the Iranian audiences were bursting with a huge amount of energy which was conveyed to the stage.”

Meanwhile, Director of the Festival Grec de Barcelona Francesc Casadesús said, “We had the chance to visit the directors of the theatres and speak with them on their styles.”

He said new generations of directors have taken the central stage in Iran’s theatre putting together plays for the Iranian youths. “By focusing on the problems that the young generation is grappling with, the directors have managed to attract a huge number of audiences, most of them, the youths.”

The two directors also praised the Iranian plays for their diversity and said they established close connections with the Iranian theatres and invited some of them to their festivals.

They also referred to the activities of some of theatre directors, actors and actresses in the Iranian cinema saying it is very surprising for them because in Europe such issue is very rare.

In reply to a question on how they became familiar with Iranian theatres, Casadesus referred to the works made by Peter Brook on Iranian passion and said “we watched works by Brook and a number of older generations of the European directors on the Iranian culture and became interested to get more familiar with them.”

Casadesus said though he had seen a number of Iranian theatres in the European festivals, he decided to travel to Iran to closely watch the production process of Iranian plays.

Elsewhere in the interview, Casadesus said he had the chance during his stay in Tehran to visit some unknown corners of Iranian theatres which are not usually noticed by the tourists.

“One of the main features of Iranian theatres is the creativity of their writers and directors which usually flourishes under limitations,” he noted.

The director also stressed he is not looking for copies of western theatres in Iran, adding, “We are interested in unique theatres which draw on their own artistic values.”

For his part, Lou Colombani referred to the achievements of Iranian movies saying cinema can provide foreigners with a good opportunity to understand a country’s art. “Unlike cinema, theatre is more complicated and needs hefty productions,” he noted.

Colombani expressed his interest in watching more Iranian theatres in the European festivals and said he is eagerly ready to pave the way for the presence of Iranian theatres in such festivals.

All 29 Missing Iranian Seafarers Dead: Official

Chief of the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, Mohammad Rastad, has confirmed that there is no hope of finding the missing seafarers.

Rastad, who is also the spokesman for the Iranian government’s delegation to China, said all Iranian seafarers have unfortunately died in the early hours of the explosions.

According to Rastad, the entire ship has already sunk and the Iranian commandos earlier deployed to save the sailors cannot recover the bodies.

A Chinese commander of the rescue operation also noted that there is no hope that any of the seafarers would be alive due to explosions and spread of toxic gases that were released in the early hours.

According to a Farsi report by the IRIB News Agency, the Chinese official also added that the recovered bodies also prove such an assessment.

Two of the three bodies already recovered are totally burnt, according to a top Iranian official.

The Chinese commander also added that the area around the ship was searched, but no one has gotten out of the vessel.

“We regret this and we did all we could during the past week. We ask the Iranian relief and rescue forces to return to the shore.”

With flames spreading to fuel tanks in the port side of the vessel on Sunday, the hopes faded to find the missing seafarers alive.

According to IRIB, the spread of fire to new oil condensate tanks created blazes as high as 800 to 900 metres and increased temperature to 350 degrees Celsius, making it impossible for the rescuers to even approach the burning ship.

The ship, run by Iran’s top oil shipping operator National Iranian Tanker Co, was carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate, an ultra-light crude that is highly flammable, to South Korea. It was equivalent to about 1 million barrels, and worth around $76 million.

There were 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis working as crew aboard.

Three bodies were recovered from the sea earlier this week, leaving 29 crew members still unaccounted for.

Chinese, Iranian Musicians Give Joint Performance in Memory of Seafarers

The members of the Chinese Drama House, consisting of 4 women and 4 male drummers next to the members of Iran’s Lian group including Mohsen Sharifian, Hamid Akbari, Morteza Azizadeh and Homayoun Nasiri were the artists who performed at the concert.

According to a Farsi report by the Honar Online news agency, the program began with the performance of Chinese musicians, while their special costumes attracted much attention.

The musicians were hitting on their drums hard, and it made their performance more attractive to viewers.

Drums have a special place in reflecting the customs of China, and what has been used throughout the history to boost the soldier’s morale, or in celebrations and ritual ceremonies, is now playing an important role in Chinese music culture.

After that, Lian band took the stage to accompany the Chinese musicians. Mohsen Sharifian played bagpipes and the percussionists accompanied him.

Then the Chinese performers left the stage, and in the next section three Iranian musicians played music from southern Iran.

While playing a Kurdish piece with bagpipes, Sharifian called on the audience to keep providing assistance to the quake-stricken people of Kermanshah.

He also said that he is very happy that this event has created a cultural dialogue between the two countries that have a very ancient history.

He also dedicated a piece to the missing Iranian seafarers on the burning oil tanker in China waters. For this part, the Chinese drummers returned to the stage again to accompany the Iranian musicians.

30 Iranian seafarers and two Bangladeshi crew members were on board an Iranian oil tanker which a few days ago collided with a bulk freighter in Eastern China. Efforts are underway to find the missing sailors; however, the huge explosions in the ship have minimized the chance of finding them alive.

Iran President Calls for Urgent Action on Burning Iranian Tanker

Rouhani held a phone call on Saturday with the Iranian Minister of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare, Ali Rabiei, who is currently in China as the head of an ad hoc committee tasked with following up on the condition of the tanker and its crew.

He said that Iran’s Foreign Ministry needed to hold more negotiations to use resources of neighboring countries and the Chinese government in order to gain immediate access to and obtain information about the tanker’s crew members.

Rouhani called on Rabiei to ensure that the Iranian and Chinese rescuers were able to enter the tanker at the earliest.

The Sanchi oil tanker, carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate from Iran to South Korea, has been in flames since colliding with the CF Crystal, a Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter, 160 nautical miles east of Shanghai on January 6.

Chinese rescuers on Saturday recovered two bodies on the deck of the tanker and its “black box.” A body found earlier this week is believed to be another of the 32 crew members, including 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis.

The salvage team tried to reach the crew’s living quarters Saturday, but were turned back by high temperatures.

Earlier on Saturday, Rabiei said Iranian and Chinese commandos were heading towards the area of the still-burning tanker.

He added that the Iranian and Chinese commandos would reach the area on Sunday morning local time and noted that many ambiguities surrounding the incident would be resolved after their arrival.

“EU’s Support for Iran Nuclear Deal Not for Economic Reasons”

araqchi

Speaking in a live interview with Iran’s state TV, Araqchi said the nuclear deal is recognized as an achievement of the EU foreign policy; therefore, it is politically important for them to maintain the agreement.

Araqchi said the nuclear agreement is of security significance for the Europeans since they believe that without the deal, the Middle East will not be safer, and if the deal breaks up, the situation in the Middle East will get worse.

According to a Farsi report by the Fars News Agency, he further mentioned that the US president’s attempts to make changes to the JCPOA are not something new as during his electoral campaigns Donald Trump was talking of tearing down the deal.

Araqchi further noted that a diplomatic row over the issues has been in process between the Iranian team and the United States over the past year.

“In this diplomatic battle, an unprecedented thing happened and Iran succeeded in isolating the US allies. None of the US allies in Europe and East Asia agreed with Trump’s request to terminate the deal or even including some changes in it.”

The senior Iranian diplomat added that the nuclear agreement enjoys a solidity that cannot be easily terminated and torn down.

“Trump was claiming that he could get out of the deal with an executive order, but he failed to do that in practice as the accord is part of a UN Security Council resolution. Such a move means breaking down a Security Council resolution by one of the members which would destroy the credibility of the Security Council and the US,” underlined Araqchi.

Iran Managed to Isolate US President

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian top diplomat noted that in the past year, Iran has isolated Trump in various areas and this was a diplomatic victory for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Regarding the benefits of the JCPOA, Araqchi pointed out that the deal could remove sanctions against Iran in various fields. He stressed that in the area of energy, all the nuclear-related sanctions have been lifted, and Iran’s oil sales have returned to the normal level with oil revenues returning.

At the end, Araqchi once again reiterated that the nuclear deal would not be renegotiated neither at present nor in the future.

He said no part of the JCPOA will be a topic of negotiation anymore.
