Iranian, Belgian FMs Call for Enhanced Bilateral Ties

During the Thursday talks, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the growing bilateral relations between Iran and Belgium, particularly in the economic field.

Zarif and Reynders also underlined the necessity of tapping into the existing opportunities and the capabilities of the two countries for expansion of mutual cooperation, especially in the fields of transportation and transit.

The Belgian top diplomat urged on all parties to the Iran nuclear deal to fully implement the JCPOA.

The two sides further conferred on regional issues and called for accelerated efforts to find political resolutions to the existing crises.

They also highlighted the need for preventing attempts by certain Europe-based elements to incite violence.

Iran Deal Unique Achievement of Multilateral Diplomacy: EU

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif conferred on the Iran nuclear deal in a joint meeting with his French, British, and German counterparts and the EU foreign policy chief in Brussels.

During the Thursday talks, the top diplomats exchanged views on the measures required under the current circumstances to guarantee the continued implementation of the nuclear deal and commitment of all parties to it.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, and German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel all emphasized the commitment of their respective governments to the implementation of JCPOA as a unique achievement of multilateral diplomacy.

Zarif also held separate meetings with his British and German counterparts and EU’s Mogherini to discuss issues of mutual interest.

Following the meetings, Zarif said in a post in his Twitter account that there was “strong consensus in Brussels today” on Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA and the Iranian people’s right to all its dividends.

The European top diplomats also agreed that “any move that undermines JCPOA is unacceptable,” Zarif added.

“E3 and EU fully aware that Iran’s continued compliance [is] conditioned on full compliance by the US,” he added.

The Iranian foreign minister, who arrived in Brussels after a short stay in Moscow, earlier discussed the nuclear deal in separate meetings with his French counterpart in the Belgian capital and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the Russian capital.

 

Iran Issuing E-Visas for Nationals of 180 Countries

In an address to the opening ceremony of Qeshm airport’s office of electronic visa, Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs Hassan Qashqavi underlined that foreign passengers visiting Iran can receive their visas after arriving at Qeshm airport without any need for referring to Iranian embassies and consulates in their own countries.

The foreign passengers can also submit their visa applications at the Iranian foreign ministry portal and receive a tracking code in a short message on their cell phones, he was quoted as saying in a Farsi report by IRNA.

He went on saying with the tracking code the passengers can receive their visa at Qeshm airport within 20 minutes.

The Iranian official also said by establishing the office, the Iranian government has prepared the grounds for attracting further foreign tourists and investments.

“Medical, tourist and other types of visas in the same class are issued electronically at Qeshm airport for half the cost of other visas,” he noted, adding that Qeshm officials can take advantage of the new facilities to attract medical tours to the southern island.

Each week, on average between 140 and 170 flights are carried out through Shiraz, Esfahan, Mashhad, Tehran and Dubai lines by Zagros, Qeshm Air, Me’raj, Iran Air, ATA, Aseman, Taban, Kish, Mahan and Sepehran airlines. It is expected the number will increase by 25 percent in near future.

He finally called for taking advantage of the tourist capacities of Qeshm Island saying some 80 percent of the tourist attractions of Qeshm are unknown even for the Iranians.

Iran FM, Top European Diplomats Discuss JCPOA in Brussels

Zarif, who arrived in Brussels after a short stay in the Russian capital of Moscow, held talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on the nuclear deal.

Earlier on Thursday, Zarif held a bilateral meeting with Le Drian. During the talks, Zarif highlighted the need for all parties to the JCPOA to implement their commitments under the deal.

The Iranian top diplomat also called on European countries to play a more active role in this regard.

Le Drian, for his part, underlined the significance of JCPOA implementation and France’s resolve in this respect.

The two sides emphasized the importance of stability and security in the region and the need for peaceful resolution of regional crises through dialogue and political consultation.

The French FM also thanked his Iranian counterpart for inviting him to visit Tehran, and stressed that he will make the trip soon.

An EU diplomat says the aim of these meetings between Iranian and European diplomats is to send a message to Washington that Iran is complying with the terms of the deal.

Enemy Failed to Incite Sedition in Iran: IRGC Chief

Speaking in a ceremony on Thursday, General Jafari said, “What was proven in this sedition (the recent riots and unrest in Iran) was the enemy’s embarrassment because the enemies failed despite extensive planning to trigger the third [wave of] local sedition against the Islamic Republic, and that was because of Iranian people’s 40-year resistance.

According to a report by the Persian-language Fars News Agency, the general said Iranians, some of whom had even staged protests over the economic problems they had, drew a line between themselves and rioters as soon as they found out that anti-revolutionary elements and hypocrites were cashing in on the situation.

“Many of those who had taken to the streets in the early days to express their objection over their livelihood situation staged mass [pro-establishment] rallies in recent days to condemn the anti-revolutionary moves, which sows the Iranian nation’s prudence and faith,” General Jafari underlined.

He further said that the enemy is planning to mount an economic war and impose sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The top commander urged officials to redouble their efforts to protect low-income families against economic pressures and solve their economic problems.

Two Quakes Hit Iran as Fight against COVID-19 Goes On

According to the National Seismological Centre of the University of Tehran’s Institute of Geophysics, the earthquake hit an area 13km away from the town of Sumar in Kermanshah province on Thursday at 10:29 a.m. local time.

The epicentre, with a depth of 8km, was determined to be at 33.78 degrees latitude and 45.74 degrees longitude.

Later at 10:44 am, the same area was also hit by a 5.4-magnitude quake.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and the extent of the damages inflicted on the quake-hit area.

Back on November 12, another massive earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale had rattled Kermanshah province and killed at least 620 people.

Tehran Condemns Meddlesome US Resolution on Iran Unrest

In a statement on Wednesday, Qassemi said, “The interventionist resolution passed by the US Congress is rejected, and is completely reprehensible and unacceptable.”

He said the US government’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs is unwise, illogical and against international norms and regulations.

“Actions such as the adoption of this resolution as well as the hostile comments and moves by that country’s government against the noble Iranian nation, which emanate from US rulers’ acquisitive and domineering nature, have always been known to wise Iranian people, and are undoubtedly a failed policy,” said Qassemi.

“Such repeated, theatrical and politically-tainted resolutions show the nature of the meddlesome US regime, which the great Iranian nation has witnessed time and again over the past decade,” he said.

“On the one hand, the US government, in a hypocritical move and by chanting utterly false slogans, claims to be supporting Iranian people, and on the other hand, taunts the civilized Iranian nation by imposing unfair sanctions, barring Iranian nationals from entering that country, and showing other malicious behaviours,” Qassemi noted.

“But US authorities need to learn once more that the ever-glorious Iranian nation is keeping a close watch on such policies, double standards and hostile approaches [adopted by Washington] against their country, and if need be, will respond to such injudicious actions in due time,” the spokesman underlined.

Iranian, Russian FMs Hold Talks in Moscow

In the Wednesday meeting, Zarif reviewed the developing ties between Tehran and Moscow and hailed the positive and constructive positions of the Russian Federation regarding the US efforts to meddle in Iran’s domestic affairs at the UN.

For his part, Lavrov touched upon the significance of the nuclear deal saying that it is very important that the International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed Iran’s compliance with its JCPOA commitments.

He also noted that Russia will continue to emphasize the important role of the IAEA.

The two sides also discussed and exchanged views on the important regional issues.

Trump Still Not Sure What to Do with Iran Deal: Zarif

Speaking to reporters upon arrival in the Russian capital of Moscow on Wednesday, Zarif said it is not yet clear what decision Donald Trump will make on January 12, the date when he is expected to re-certify Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“One of Trump’s policies is to avoid being predictable. However, he has gone to extremes in adopting this policy so much that the US is no longer much reliable for any of its partners.”

Asked if the Europeans know about Trump’s upcoming decision, Zarif said, “I don’t think even Trump himself knows yet what he is going to do, but Europeans for sure do not yet know what decision he will make.”

“If the international community is interested in the continued implementation of JCPOA, it must stand against any measure by the US against the nuclear deal,” he added.

Zarif referred to his visit to Moscow, which is being made ahead of his trip to Brussels on Thursday, and said, “While in Moscow, I will hold talks with Mr Lavrov (Russian FM) on the US’ destructive policies.”

“The international community has explicitly indicated that it does not support the US policies and consider them to be destructive,” he went on to say.

He pointed to the recent UN Security Council meeting on Iran and said, “The UNSC held a totally unnecessary meeting last Friday. We believe holding the meeting was basically a very wrong and dangerous move for the UN Security Council.”

However, he added, the US was totally isolated in the meeting despite the pressures it had exerted on the member states.

“Almost all countries whose envoys addressed the meeting underlined the implementation of JCPOA and the necessity of keeping it. This shows a consensus in the international community.”

“This global consensus must be translated into action. On the one hand, the US should understand this global consensus and revise its policies accordingly, and on the other hand, the international community needs to stand against any anti-JCPOA move by the US if it wants to maintain the nuclear deal,” he noted.

“This is what we will pursue in our talks on Wednesday and Thursday, and will wait for the next moves by other countries.”

He at the same time noted that Iran has various options and will consider its people’s interests when making decision. “In our view, our interests will be reinforced.”

The Iranian top diplomat further pointed to “strategic” relations between Iran and Russia, and said, “Russia is an important neighbour for us and a major member of the P5+1 group which played a very important and key role in the nuclear negotiations.”

“During the past two years, Russia has had a major role in the implementation of the nuclear deal, and we have enjoyed Moscow’s support in the UN Security Council in these two years,” he noted.
