Iran in Heart of Every Single Bosnian Citizen: PM

Speaking in a Friday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Sarajevo, Zvizdic thanked Iran for its support for his country in the past, saying Iran is in the heart of every Bosnian citizen.

Describing Tehran-Sarajevo bilateral ties as “very friendly”, the Bosnian premier said he sees no problem in relations but his government is willing to expand economic collaboration with Iran.

“Signing preferential trade agreements, establishing banking connections and facilitating [procedures for obtaining] visas are among measures needed to be taken to remove obstacles to greater trade cooperation,” he said.

Zarif, in turn, conveyed the warm greetings of Iran’s First Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri and extended his invitation to Zvizdic to visit Tehran.

“Bosnia has been in the heart of Iranians since a long time ago. Tehran sees no limit to expansion of relations and cooperation with Bosnia,” he said.

Zarif said Iran’s policy is to help boost solidarity and stability of Bosnia and cooperate with all ethnic groups in the country.

“The meeting of Iran-Bosnia joint economic commission would help foster economic cooperation between the two sides,” Zarif said.

“Establishing direct banking relations and facilitating [procedures for obtaining] visas can also help remove obstacles to cooperation,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Zarif also met with Ognjen Tadić, the Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and several other members of the legislative body.

In the Friday meeting, Tadić welcomed the top Iranian diplomat and said he takes pride in having visited Iran two years ago.

“I had the honour to travel to Iran in 2016 and be a guest of [Iranian Parliament Speaker] Dr. Ali Larijani. I have good memories of that trip, which had a good outcome as well. I felt first-hand the friendship between Iranian people and the Bosnian nation,” said the parliamentarian.

The Iranian foreign minister, in turn, conveyed Larijani’s warmest greetings to the Bosnian lawmaker.

“I had a very fruitful trip where businessmen and entrepreneurs of both countries did good work together. We are keen to see sustainable stability and friendship in Bosnia and we call for cooperation with all ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the foreign minister underlined.

Zarif said the two nations enjoy age-old and robust cultural ties, adding, “We stand ready for the enhancement of relations on all fronts and we have no limitations in that regard.”

Also on the agenda of the talks were the enhancement of people-to-people exchanges, especially in the tourism sector, promotion of economic and trade ties, and offering visa services.

The two sides further exchanged views on regional and international issues as well as the need for an all-out campaign against terrorism and extremism.

Police and prosecutors said in a joint statement that the fire broke out at 6 a.m. local time (0200 GMT) Friday in Baku and wasn’t put out until three hours later. A short circuit is believed to be to blame for the blaze at the clinic which is situated in an old, one-story wooden building.

The office of the Azerbaijani president said he had arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue effort and ordered an investigation into the blaze.

Bosnia Resolved to Deepen Bilateral Ties with Iran

In a Friday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Sarajevo, Begovic extended a warm welcome to the Iranian foreign minister and his accompanying delegation and showed his country’s deep appreciation for the support coming from Iran.

“The people of Bosnia and Herzegovina from all ethnic groups will never forget Iran’s support,” he noted.

Begovic then said the political and cultural relations between the two sides are now standing at an ideal level, but the economic ties have not yet developed at the same pace over the past years.

However, he added, the grounds are now prepared for a jump in economic relations between the two sides after the removal of international sanctions on Iran.

“We are now exploring ways to facilitate banking relations and visa issuance for two sides’ people. The obstacles will surely be removed,” he noted.

For his part, the Iranian foreign minister gave the warm regards of the Iranian president to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency members and said Tehran attaches great importance to all ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“We hope the relations and social cohesion among Bosnian ethnic groups would grow further to see more security and development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Islamic Republic of Iran will always stand by you,” he added.

Zarif then referred to the visit of a high-ranking Iranian delegation along with him to the country and said the visit could be a good starting point for expediting economic ties between the two sides.

He said Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina have various fields of mutual interests for expanding relations and added Iran can be a reliable source of energy for the country.

The Iranian foreign minister said there are a number of obstacles hampering expansion of commercial relations between the two sides and expressed hope the obstacles could be removed through bilateral cooperation to facilitate customs and banking relations and visa issuance and expansion of commercial and people-to-people ties.

Zarif cited terrorism and fight against extremism as one of the main common concerns between Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the European Union.

He said extremism has nothing to do with Islam and other religions and added ideological and cultural fight against extremism should be among the top priorities of all.

“Establishment of cooperation in this field is in the interest of regional and international peace and security.”

During the talks, other members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency expressed their will to expand and deepen their country’s relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran in all fields.

The Iranian top diplomat, who arrived in Sarajevo on Thursday, earlier held talk with Bosnian Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Minister Mirko Sarovic.

During the Friday meeting, the two sides conferred on the ways of expanding economic and commercial relations, creating facilities and removing obstacles to expansion of ties.

“Return of Terrorists to Homelands Biggest Concern for Europe”

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said members of the international community must join hands for a real fight against terrorism, the biggest challenge confronting the globe.

Boroujerdi urged European governments to play a greater role in efforts to curb terrorism in the region, as the return of European terrorists to their native countries could significantly affect the stability of the green continent.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Miodrag Vukovic, a member of the Montenegro-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group, in Tehran, according to a Farsi report by ICANA.

Vukovic said in turn that his country is concerned with the spread of terrorism in the region, fearing the instability might spill over into the neighbouring regions, particularly Europe.

Iran Rejects UN Chief’s “Biased, Worthless” Human Rights Report

In a Thursday statement, Qassemi referred to the report by António Guterres prepared for the ongoing meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, and said “as we have witnessed in the past, reports like this are replete with lots of fundamental problems both in nature and procedures.”

He underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran deems the report as invalid and worthless.

The spokesman then added the UN chief’s report on Iran’s human rights situation suffers from a lot of faults and problems. “The report has drawn on not only an unfair and politically-motivated resolution but also unreliable, false and completely invalid sources and data.”

Qassemi said the UN chief has also prepared an “unbalanced and biased” report on human rights situation in Iran by “ignoring and completely closing his eyes on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s progress and determined efforts in this field.”

He then pointed out that Iran has a resolute will to further promote civil rights within “the progressive principles of Islam and Islamic Republic’s Constitution.”

The spokesman condemned “double-standard and politically-motivated” mechanisms and approaches as well as any “instrumental use” of human rights [against others] and said, “The Islamic Republic has always maintained that while most regions in the world and certain states in the Middle East are suffering from deplorable humanitarian crises due to the imposed war on them, the UN’s continuous move to adopt politically-motivated decisions as well as double standards in dealing with human rights situations in the world will only increase the international community’s mistrust towards the world body.”

Earlier this week, the UN secretary general read out a report on the situation of human rights in Iran saying the UN remained alarmed by what he called the large number of rights abuses in the country.

Instead, the UNSC unanimously adopted a Russian-proposed resolution on Yemen extending the mission of the UN Expert Committee on Yemen for another year.

Possession of Nukes Should Be Regarded as Unethical: Iran

Speaking at a Conference on Disarmament attended by high-ranking officials from different countries at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), Dehqani elaborated on the Islamic Republic’s positions on nuclear disarmament in the world.

In his speech, the Iranian diplomat said that the Zionist regime’s nuclear weapons program is a threat to the Middle East.

He said based on religious teachings Iran believes that possession of nuclear weapons not only is not an honour, but, on the contrary, under the fatwa of the Leader of Islamic Revolution, the production, possession, and the use of nuclear weapons is unlawful, harmful, dangerous, Haram, and a great sin.

He also noted that Iran had fully implemented its commitments under the JCPOA, but the United States had failed to do so, through polices, actions and statements that aimed to deprive Iran of the benefits of the deal.

The Conference on Disarmament continued its high-level segment, hearing addresses by ministerial officials from Turkey, Russia, Romania and South Africa.

Ahmet Yildiz, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, said that during the current review cycle of the of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, it was essential all three of its pillars be addressed in a balanced manner, allowing States in compliance to tap into the benefits of nuclear energy.

Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, said that all nuclear-weapon states must join in further efforts to implement the Non-Proliferation Treaty, stressing that all factors influencing the current security environment must be considered, including the non-ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the possibility of the deployment of offensive weapons in outer space.

Iran Hails Russia’s “Principled” Veto of UNSC Resolution

During the Thursday talks, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral and regional issues including the Caspian Sea legal regime.

Russia’s latest “principled” move to veto the United Nation Security Council resolution on Yemen was also among the main topics discussed by the two sides.

Earlier Monday, Russia vetoed the resolution drafted based on a report condemning Iran for allegedly violating an arms embargo by sending weapons to Yemen.

Backed by the United States and France, the British-drafted resolution was supported with 11 votes in favour, before Russia used its veto and other member states abstained from voting.

Instead, the UNSC unanimously adopted a Russian-proposed resolution on Yemen extending the mission of the UN Expert Committee on Yemen for another year.

FIFA Chief Vows to Work for Settling Iran-Saudi Venue Dispute

“I don’t think problems related to the venue for matches between Iranian and Saudi clubs are unsolvable”, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.

FIFA Chief Vows to Work for Settling Iran-Saudi Venue DisputeInfantino was speaking after a meeting with Iran’s Sports Minister Massoud Soltanifar in Tehran on Thursday, the Persian-language Varzesh3 website reported.

Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran, who have had no diplomatic relations since an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran in 2016, have affected matches between Iranian and Saudi teams in the AFC Champions League.

Saudi Arabia does not want its teams to play in Iran over what it calls security concerns. Tehran, on the other hand, has opposed playing games in neutral venues.

The AFC has mainly chosen to side with Saudi Arabia, refusing to allow the Iranian clubs to host Saudi teams at home.

“Neither politics nor football should intervene in each other. You can be sure that I will talk with whoever I can in this regard”, Infantino said.

He entered Iran Wednesday, upon the formal invitation of the Iranian Football Association.

Early February, IFA President Mehdi Taj had flown to Switzerland to urge Infantino to intervene in a politically-charged Asian Champions League game between Tehran-based Esteghlal and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal scheduled for late last month.

Esteghlal opted to host their game in Qatar on February 20 with Al-Hilal choosing Kuwait as hosts on April 16.

However, the Iranian team’s choice was vetoed by the AFC, who choose Oman with no opportunity to find an alternative venue.

The replacement was made due to recent tensions between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The match was finally held in Oman, where the Tehran-based team beat the Saudi side 1-0.

Speaking after the meeting, Soltanifar said he asked Infantino to urge the AFC to adopt a non-political stance and allow Iranian teams to host Saudi teams in Iran in the next fixture of the Champions League.

“Iran is a secure country. Infantino totally agrees with us and said he will inform the AFC of his view to help address the problem”, Soltanifar said.

Soltanifar also said Infantino is to invite Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to attend the opening ceremony of the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia.

FIFA Chief Vows to Work for Settling Iran-Saudi Venue DisputeInfantino also held a meeting with Rouhani later on Thursday.

He had earlier congratulated IFA on booking a berth in the 2018 World Cup after Iran qualified for the tournament last year.

The FIFA president also watched Tehran’s derby between Esteghlal and Persepolis at Azadi stadium later Thursday, which ended with Esteghlal’s 1-0 win.

Infantino visited Tehran in February 2017 as the UEFA chief and visited the Iran National Football Academy during his one-day trip.

He also held a meeting with the Iranian media and negotiated with Iranian officials on solutions to develop football in Iran.

EU Fully Backs “Robust” Iran Nuclear Deal: Croatia

In the Thursday meeting held in Zagreb, Pejčinović expressed Croatia and Europe’s full backing for the implementation and maintenance of the Iran nuclear deal, describing the JCPOA as one of the most significant and robust agreements of its kind.

She said the deal laid the groundwork for further cooperation between Iran and other countries around the world.

The Croatian foreign minister said Tehran and Zagreb have had age-old and strong relations over the years, and hailed Zarif’s trip to her country as an opportunity to further boost reciprocal political and economic relations.

“Good agreements were signed during the Croatian president’s trip to Iran, and your presence here along with an important economic delegation is a sign that those agreements are going into force,” she said.

The Iranian foreign minister, in turn, emphasized Tehran’s determination to promote mutual cooperation in all areas and work towards the implementation of the agreements reached during his visit to Croatia.

The two top diplomats further reviewed bilateral relations in all political, economic and cultural areas as well as the agreements already clinched during trips by the officials of both countries. They also highlighted the need to further enhance mutual ties on all fronts.

Also high on the agenda of the talks were key regional and international issues, including the JCPOA and fighting violence, terrorism and extremism all around the world, the crises in Syria and Yemen, and the current situation in Afghanistan and the Balkans.
