Ginger Halva; A Yummy Traditional Iranian Confection

Ginger Halva; A Yummy Traditional Iranian Confection

This type of halva, which is usually served with tea after meals, is harder than the typical kind of Halva. Flour, butter, oil, ginger, cardamom, powdered sugar and powdered walnut are usually used to make this type of halva, which is put into square-shaped moulds.

It is interesting to know that in most restaurants in Tabriz, they serve tea and halva free of charge after the meal.

Ginger Halva; A Yummy Traditional Iranian ConfectionIngredients

Flour: 2 cupfuls

Powdered sugar: 1.5 cupfuls

Powdered walnut: 100gr

Butter: 150gr

Powdered ginger: 4 spoonfuls

Powdered cardamom: 4 cupfuls

Recipe

Put the flour into a casserole and put it on mild heat. Keep mixing the flour with a wooden spoon until it is roasted and begins to smell good. Then remove the flour from the oven and sieve it.

Put the sieved flour in the casserole again and add butter. Sauté it until the butter is completely absorbed by the flour. Then remove the casserole from the heat, add powdered cardamom and powdered walnut, and mix them.

Let the mixture cool down a little bit (the flour should not be too hot, so that the powdered sugar will not melt and the halva will get crispy). Then sieve the powdered sugar onto it and mix them. Put the mixed materials in a dish or mould and press them down with the back of a spoon or by hand.

Sprinkle powdered sugar and shredded pistachios on it and cut it into squares or diamonds. Put the dish in the fridge until the halva becomes cold and hard. Then serve it with tea (This type of halva is very crispy and melts in your mouth)

Comment: You may add saffron to the halva to make it taste the same. You may also garnish the halva with liquid chocolate.

German Ambassador’s Passion for Iranian Culture Makes Headlines

The German diplomat rubs shoulders with Iranian people and rides in pick-ups with them. Klor-Berchtold’s interest in the traditions, customs and religious teachings of Muslims becomes a motive from him to visit the Imam Reza holy shrine. He also attends the training sessions of the Tehran football powerhouse Esteghlal. He even stands behind the ball and scores a goal! He has a passion for the poems of renowned Iranian poet Hafez. By taking a glance at the ambassador’s Twitter page, we see him enthusiastically taking part in a food festival in the city of Zanjan. Then we learn that the pleasant taste of Iranian foods, including Abgoosht (the Persian broth), has aroused his interest to go to cooking classes.

He loves the Iranian culture and civilization, and admits that diplomacy should be at the service of the people. He is also active is social media. He has been the highest profile ambassador on social media in recent months. The Persian-language Shahrvand newspaper has conducted an interview with the top German diplomat. The highlights of the interview follow:

Introduce yourself. How many diplomats were serving as German ambassadors to Iran before you?

I’m Klor-Berchtold. I’ve studied law. I served as a civil and criminal judge for a few years, which was instrumental in shaping my character and way of thinking.

At the end of 2016, I presented my credentials to President Hassan Rouhani. Since then, I have been trying to boost dialogue between the two countries. I’m very well familiar with this region as well as its potential and problems because I used to serve as the German ambassador to Yemen and consul general to Israel and occupied Palestinian territories. I believe in dialogue and the adoption of measures that would build confidence and the fact that all political crises can be settled peacefully with willpower and determination. I was also in charge of the Vienna office of the secretary general of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to end the Cold War.

German Ambassador’s Passion for Iranian Culture Makes HeadlinesWhy are you interested in rubbing shoulders with people?

I believe diplomacy should be at the service of the people, and that’s why I use social media. It is important for me to see how people react to my work and activities. I like talking to people – people like me and you – whether they are in the streets, cooking broth, stuck in traffic, grazing sheep, or in the desert. It is only through these experiences that one will be able to get a more precise understanding of Iran and Iranians.

Can you speak Persian?

I’ll do my best. I have a vocabulary notebook in my car, and learn a few new words every time I get stuck in traffic. I enjoy finding the similarities between the Persian and German languages, and sometimes insert paragraphs in Persian into my speeches.

Do you know Iranian poets?

In Iran, everybody has his/her own favourite poet, and always has a couplet ready to recite for every occasion. This is beautiful! Great German poet Goethe dedicated himself to Hafez. His masterpiece West–östlicher Divan (West-Eastern Diwan) is an example of the West’s curiosity toward the East and shows mutual cultural respect. I have learned from Goethe, and I’d like to study Hafez’s works as well.

Are there similarities or differences between the Iranian and German cultures? Where are they more noticeable?

Iranians and Germans are curious about the world around them. They travel a lot and travel with enthusiasm. This curiosity and readiness to have new experiences leads to the richness of the character and thought, and guarantees peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Iranians and Germans are gourmands. There are similarities in the music domain, too. Both Germans and Iranians like electronic music. I became really happy when I saw the German Schiller music band was warmly welcomed in Tehran. The biggest cultural difference between Iranians and Germans is in the way they look at religion.

You attended the training session of the Esteghlal team recently. Why did you go there? What do you think of the team? What sports other than football are you interested in?

Esteghlal has recruited Winfried Schafer, a successful German football coach. As the ambassador, I needed to visit him. Of course, I visited the Persepolis team, too. I also visited other teams, for example those in Mashhad, Tabriz, … . Some time ago, I converted a penalty as former goalkeeper of Iran’s national team Mehdi Rahmati was in the goal. I became very happy and I shared it on Twitter. When I was face-to-face with the renowned Iranian goalkeeper, we both had a good time.

You have posted a photo of yours on Twitter and announced that you are willing to attend cooking classes. Is your interest because of the good taste of Iranian foods?

In Germany, too, we have special and different kinds of food. Each region has its own foods, as is the case in Iran. What we have in common is that we both enjoy eating food with family and friends.

Which Iranian cities have you visited? Which is your favourite city?

There are many towns and regions which are cultural treasure troves. I’m especially interested in Yazd, which was registered on UNESCO’s List of Heritage Sites last year. I’m impressed by the desert as much as I am by the mountains of Iran, not to mention the cultural hubs of Iran such as Isfahan, Shiraz as well as Kashan with its famous Fin Garden.

How does the German ambassador spend holidays?

On official holidays, I try to tour the country if possible to get more familiar with it. I wouldn’t like to get stuck in traffic, so I usually drive out of town. I’m interested to talk to people when I’m filling up my car’s fuel tank, shopping, eating a snack on the street or drinking tea at a teahouse. If the weather is not favourable, I play the piano or read a few lines of Hafez’s poems and try to figure out from what perspective he saw the world at the time.

Saudi-led Bloc Wants Qatar to Abandon World Cup Hosting to Lift Blockade

“They have asked us to give up organising the World Cup to have the boycott against Qatar lifted. They said if Doha wants to show its willingness to find a solution and lift the embargo, it must abandon the hosting of 2022 FIFA World Cup,” said Qatari Attorney General Ali bin Fetais al Marri in an interview with the Spanish newspaper ABC, Qatar Tribune news website reported on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain imposed a blockade on the peninsular nation last June.

When asked if there was a way out of the Persian Gulf crisis, Marri said,”I don’t see any signs of a breakthrough. Today, none of these countries shows signs of wanting a dialogue to solve problems.”

“I do not see any reason for the blockade other than envy. Why do the Qataris have more liberties than we have, why are they richer if Saudi Arabia is a country with more wealth? Why did Qatar get a chance to host the 2022 football World Cup?”

The bloc has made several conditions for lifting its land, air and sea blockade against Qatar, notably asking Doha to end support for groups such as Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which they regard as terrorist, and restrict ties with Tehran.

Qatar has denied the allegations and rejected the Saudi-led demands as an attempt to impose guardianship on the kingdom.

Mediation attempts led by countries such as Kuwait and the US have failed to make headway toward settling the crisis.

Iran Says Respects Result of Iraqi Parliamentary Elections

“All Iraqi parties are our brothers and Iran wants a free, competitive and popular election that leads to a strong government,” said IrajMasjedi in a local conference in the Iraqi city of Najaf on Sunday.

Iraq will hold parliamentary elections on May 12, which will decide the prime minister who will lead the country for the next four years.

Among top contenders for the premiership post,a position reserved to the Shiite majority, are incumbent Premier Haider al-Abadi and former prime minister Nuri al-Maliki.

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, Masjedi expressed hope the Iraqi nation will maintain its unity, describing separatism as a big threat to the country’s progress and development.

The ambassador said Iran is ready to help facilitate dialogue among Iraqi parties, as it is the only solution to divisions among them.

Dozens Killed, Missing after Huge Fire at Russian Mall (+Video)

One witness, Ekaterina, was in the shopping centre on the fourth floor to see a children’s film with her children when the fire broke out: “A woman ran to us and screamed that we should run. Everyone started to run away, me and the children, there were seven of us.”

Reportedly, the automatic fire extinguishing system did not work.

According to the Russian Emergency Ministry, EMERCOM, the area of the fire exceeded 1,500 square metres. The fire source was located on the top floor where several cinema halls and children’s playgrounds with attractions are located. The interfloor overlapping collapsed on an area of 30 square meters.

Around 200 animals of 25 kinds, among which Guinea pigs, rabbits, a guinea-fowl, dwarf Cameroonian goats, mini-pigs and others, have reportedly died in a petting zoo located in the shopping mall.

Over 230 people and 50 units of equipment are involved in the firefighting operation. Traffic near the shopping mall is blocked.

Designation of John Bolton Disgrace for US: Iran

John Bolton meeting with Maryam Rajavi, the ringleader of MKO terrorist group

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said, “It is a disgrace for an ostensibly super power to have a national security advisor (John Bolton) who is in the pay of a terrorist group (the anti-Iran Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization) that has killed 17 thousand innocent Iranian citizens.”

“Spending millions of dollars, the Americans use different tools such as military interference, economic sanctions, undermining [countries’] defense power, creating political and security crises, and triggering tensions; however, this has only strengthened Iran’s power and spiritual influence,” said the official.

Shamkhani touched upon different US administrations’ unchanging policy, i.e. pursuing the strategy of undermining and dealing a blow to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“The current US president’s cult of personality and crazy interest in being in the centre of attentionhas caused his anti-Iran actions and decisions to be different from the complex behaviour of [his] predecessors and to be manifested [in a manner] proportionate to his childish temperament and behaviour [whereby he likes] to be seen [by others],” Shamkhani noted.

He referred to the enemy’s pre-planned moves to create insecurity along Iran’s borders and trigger instability inside the country, and highlighted the necessity of countering the soft war launched by the domineering powers to undermine Iran’s domestic unity.

“The enemy’s focusing on economic war and psychological warfare to create the impression that the [Iranian] establishment is inefficient has made it all the more necessary to maintain solidarity and promote cooperation between people and officials and mobilize national potentialities to help solve the key problems facing the country,” notedShamkhani.

He said the Islamic Republic of Iran will, in the Persian New Year, further enhance its power, initiatives and prudence to safeguard its national security and foil the Western-Hebrew-Arabic strategy aimed at destabilizing the Middle East region.

John Bolton has close links with the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) and is on its payroll. The MKO has conducted numerous acts of terror against Iran and has the blood of some seventeen thousand innocent Iranians on its hands.

Taj-Mir Village; A Centre of Iranian Dolls

Nowadays, the art of doll-making in the world is used to introduce the rich culture of the countries. During the process of making dolls, lullabies, poems and memories of the nomadic village life are introduced as well.

Dolls in Taj-Mir, known as Dotuk, are not made just for playing, but they represent the culture of local community including their clothing, makeups, stories and other native customs. In this village, men, women and children are all struggling to live a halal life, but as a result of the recent drought, the only job available for men is to guard the environment while the women and children are making their local dolls in a new style.

Taj-Mir Village; A Centre of Iranian DollsThese dolls, which are made using leftover fabrics and sheep and goats’ wool, are environment-friendly. Therefore, if the dolls are thrown away after being purchased, they will be recycled in three months.

The dolls each have a story of their own, and Elias is a teenager, who was able to create stories for them using the tales and the old local stories of the region. This has made the dolls so much popular that they are sold like hot cakes.

Currently, more than 15 households (about 45 women from Taj-Mir village) are producing local dolls. Although the main makers of these dolls are women, other family members are also involved in the making process.

Encouraging creativity, building up self-esteem, and improving life expectancy, in addition to creating jobs are among the advantages of producing Taj-Mir dolls.

The  dolls of South Khorasan have been inscribed on the List of Iran’s National Heritage and are going to be registered on the List of UNESCO World Heritage as well.

Here are the photos of Taj-Mir dolls and locals retrieved from Mehr News Agency:

Iran President to Leave Tehran for Ashgabat, Baku Tuesday

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Rouhani would leave Tehran for Ashgabat on Tuesday on the first leg of his tour at the invitation of his Turkmen counterpart, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, Iranian president’s deputy chief of staff for communications and information, Parviz Esmaeili, said on Sunday.

After the official ceremony to welcome the Iranian president, Rouhani and Berdimuhamedow would hold talks and then the two countries’s high-ranking delegations would meet, he added.

The official noted that Iran and Turkmenistan would also sign documents for cooperation in the presence of the two presidents while the Iranian and Turkmen tradesmen would also discuss possible avenues for boosting trade ties.

He added that the Iranian chief executive would pay a short visit to the ancient city of Merv on Wednesday.

Esmaeili further stated that the Iranian president would head for Baku Wednesday evening to hold talks with his Azeri counterpart, Ilham Aliyev.

In the presence of Rouhani and Aliyev, Tehran and Baku are scheduled to sign several cooperation documents after which the two presidents will attend a joint press conference, he added.

The Iranian official said an economic meeting would be held on Thursday to discuss the strengthening of cooperation among the two countries’ state-run sectors and economic agents.

Iran Ready to Help Yemen’s Warring Sides to Achieve Ceasefire

“At the beginning of the fourth year of the devastating war on Yemen and the military aggression of the Saudi-led coalition against the county and the cruel blockade imposed on the Yemeni people, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemns the military assault and calls for an immediate end to the attacks, bloodshed and siege,” read the statement released on Sunday.

Iran’s foreign policy apparatus sees the grave humanitarian situation in Yemen “very sad” and believes the war has brought nothing but instability and insecurity, tens of thousands of dead and injured, the destruction of health and civil infrastructure, over one million Yemenis catching cholera and an increase in terrorist and Takfiri activities, the statement added.

“The aggressors have achieved no goal but destroying Yemen and causing humanitarian catastrophes,” it said.

The foreign ministry lamented that the coalition is using hunger as leverage to place pressure on the Yemeni people, in a totally inhumane move that is against international humanitarian law.

“According to confessions of international bodies, the continuation of the air, sea and land blockade of Yemen has created the worst humanitarian situation in the country and put over 20 million on the verge of famine and starvation.”

Pointing to the appointment of a new United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, the Iranian foreign ministry said Iran believes UN representatives could help pave the way to settlement of the terrible crisis by adopting an unbiased approach.

“The Islamic Republic is fully ready to help the warring sides to achieve ceasefire and start Yemeni-Yemeni talks to find a political solution to the conflict,” it said.

The Iranian foreign ministry said the US and some European countries ought to stop supporting the aggressors and providing them with weapons and fighter jets and take serious measures to bring an end to the war and constant war crimes in the country.

Pointing to Iran’s four-point peace plan for Yemen, the ministry said it believes the conflict has only political solutions and it would have no military victor.

“Hence, the Islamic Republic of Iran asks the global community to increase international pressure to end the attacks and blockade of Yemen,” it added.

Iran Condemns UNHCR Extension of Special Rapporteur’s Mandate

In a Sunday statement, Qassemi noted that the resolution was approved by the votes of members of a political bloc and some regional countries that are top violators of human rights.

He described the resolution as a condemned and unacceptable one which was not supported by a significant number of Human Rights Council members.

“In our view, the one-year extension of the mission of special rapporteur on Iran’s human rights situationwas unprofessional and unnecessary,” he said.

“Such a rapporteur will have big problemsregardingauthenticity and legitimacy,” he said.

The spokesman said Iran supports theUniversal Periodic Review mechanism as the fairest method for addressing human rights issues, as it covers all countries, has a non-discriminatoryand non-selective approach, respects the principle of equality and does not allowpolitically-motivated moves.

The resolution was adopted on Friday, in the closing meeting of the 37th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in the UN headquarters in Geneva.

Some 21 members of the Council voted in favour of the resolution, while 7 others voted against, with 19 abstentions.

In the UNHRC meeting,UN members discussed the latest report of the late UN special rapporteur for human rights in Iran Asma Jahangir, a Pakistani lawyer who took the post in September 2016.

She had frequently delivered reports to UN bodies censuring the Iranian government for what she called widespread rights violations before she died of cardiac arrest early February.

The Council has not yet appointed a successor to Jahangir.

Iran has refused to allow the UN special rapporteurs to visit the country, arguing the use of country-specific mechanisms to address human rights issues is unacceptable.

Besides, Iran says the situation of human rights in Iran by no means is a special situation to warrant a special mandate.

Tehran says the appointment of a UN special rapporteur on Iran results from the heavy influence of western governments in the UN and part of its pressure campaign against Iran since the Islamic Revolution toppled the rule of US-backed dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
