Iran Urges EU to Hold Meeting of JCPOA Joint Commission

In this letter, Zarif requested the EU foreign policy chief to organize a meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission to discuss the US pullout.

The top Iranian diplomat is currently in the Belgian capital on the last leg of his three-nation tour aimed at saving the nuclear deal. During his visit to the Belgian capital, Zarif will hold talks with his British, German, and French counterparts as well as EU’s Mogherini on the future of the nuclear deal.

Earlier, he visited Beijing and Moscow and sat for talks with his Chinese and Russian counterparts over the fate of the JCPOA.

Zarif’s letter to Mogherini came after a similar letter he wrote to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres following the US pullout.

In the letter, Zarif accused the US of “a complete disregard for international law” over its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal. He said the US has consistently failed to abide by its commitments under the deal since Donald Trump took office. The Iranian foreign minister added that the US actions not only undermine the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes but endanger multilateralism.

In remarks before his departure for Brussels, Zarif talked about the purpose of his negotiations with European officials and said he held good and substantive meetings with his counterparts in Russia and China.

He noted that Russia’s stance on the deal is explicit as Moscow believes that all members of the deal and the international community should benefit from the JCPOA.

Zarif also held a phone conversation with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on Monday on the Iran nuclear deal.

Iran’s Shamkhani Calls Trump Epitome of Anarchism, Violence

US Must Answer Questions about Its Role in COVID-19 Spread: Iran

“Trump has turned into the symbol of anarchism and increasing violence on the international scene with his strategic mistakes in supporting terrorism, breaching the JCPOA (the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Iran and the major world powers) and other international pacts as well as violating the Palestinian people’s rights,” Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said on Monday.

The US declared on Monday afternoon the opening of its embassy in Jerusalem al-Quds despite a global outcry and the Palestinian people’s anger over the controversial decision.

Hours before the inauguration, Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinians who have gathered near a Gaza fence for the climax of a six-week demonstration. According to Gaza health officials, at least 41 Palestinians, including children and teenagers, have been shot dead and hundreds have been wounded by Israeli snipers who are positioned along the fence, facing the protesters.

Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, arrived in Jerusalem al-Quds on Sunday to open the new US embassy in Israel.

Speaking to reporters, the US president’s daughter said she had “great joy” in going back to Jerusalem al-Quds, which Trump recognized as Israel’s new capital last December amid international uproar.

Shamkhani further said the transfer of the illegitimate Israeli regime’s capital to Jerusalem al-Quds would strengthen the Muslim world’s resolve to defend the Palestinian cause and would lead to adverse consequences for the orchestrators of the plot.

He emphasized that the catastrophic measure would reinforce coherence and unity among Muslims across the world and accelerate the Israeli regime’s annihilation.

The SNSC secretary held the Israeli regime and US accountable for instability and insecurity of such “unwise” measures given the security and political consequences of any decision about al-Quds.

He said al-Quds is an inseparable part of Palestine, stressing that only residents of this land must make decisions about its future.

“No country can make a decision for this Muslim country by overlooking the absolute rights of the Palestinian people,” Shamkhani pointed out.

In a speech at the White House in December 2017, Trump officially declared the disputed city of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital, despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.

Trump said, “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.”

Iran’s Persepolis Defeats UAE’s Al Jazira to Book Place in ACL Quarters

The Iranian giant advanced to the quarter-final on away goals after the tie ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Al Jazira survived 45 minutes of one-way traffic as Persepolis set up shop at its visitor’s end of the pitch in pursuit of an early leveler.

The home side finally found a breakthrough after the hour mark after a well-worked attacking move saw Ahmadzadeh lay-off a pass for Ahmad Nourollahi who struck with venom from 25 yards out into the top corner to put Persepolis in front.

Al Jazira boss Henk ten Cate responded to going behind by introducing striker Ahmed Al Hashmi for defender Mohammed Fawzi, and his attacking intent immediately paid dividends when Al Hashmi combined with Ali Mabkhout inside Persepolis’ half before setting up Romarinho, who drilled in a shot from outside the area into the bottom corner to restore Al Jazira’s aggregate lead in the 70th minute.

Persepolis piled the pressure for the remainder of the game, but all its attempts to find a winner were halted by an inspired Khaseif who denied Godwin Mensha and Ali Alipour back-to-back headers inside the final 10 minutes.

As the strikers failed to find a winner, it was skipper Hosseini who delivered, pouncing on a poor defensive clearance from Musallem Fayez to volley home the winner with a minute to play to send Persepolis into the quarter-final.

Iran Condemns Israel’s Massacre of Palestinians in Gaza

In a Monday statement, Qassemi categorically denounced the Israeli forces’ ruthless killing of dozens of Palestinians and wounding of thousands of others in peaceful demonstrations in Gaza and other Palestinian territories held ahead of Nakba Day (the anniversary of the Israeli regime’s occupation of Palestinian land) and in protest at the relocation of the US’ embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

“The killing of defenceless Palestinian children, women and people, and the occupation of Palestinian territories, have turned into the Zionists’ main strategy during the past 70 years when the Palestinian land has been under occupation,” he noted.

“Today, the US embassy and government are in a festive mood in the face of the brutal massacre of innocent people,” said Qassemi.

“The non-stop and incessant crimes committed by the Zionists in Palestine are the result of the United States’ unflinching support as well as the treacherous compromise and humiliating inaction of certain Middle East states, and they are undoubtedly responsible for, and accomplices to the unjust bloodletting in occupied Palestine as well as the sufferings and hardships,” the spokesman said.

Qassemi announced Iran’s backing for Muslim Palestinians’ legitimate struggles and patient resistance against the triangle of money, force and hypocrisy.

He called on regional and international organizations and bodies to take prompt action without any hesitation, condemn the crimes committed by the Israeli regime and introduce the Tel Aviv regime to the International Criminal Court as a war criminal.

Qassemi called on them to take necessary, firm and immediate action to stop the perpetuation of Israel’s massacre of thousands of defenceless and innocent people. He urged all independent countries to put on their immediate agenda efforts to secure the lives of Palestinian people in occupied territories and end the economic blockade on them.

The spokesman called on all Muslim nations and other freedom-seekers around the world to stage protest rallies and gatherings in solidarity with Palestinian people, and condemn the Israeli regime’s appalling massacre in Palestine as well as the Trump administration’s illegal move to announce Jerusalem al-Quds as the Israeli regime’s capital.

The preparatory meeting was attended by Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior assistant to Iran’s Foreign Minister in Political Affairs; Alexander Lavrentiev, the Russian President’s Special Envoy on Syria; and Sedat Onal, the Deputy Undersecretary of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Iraq Elections Strengthen Victories against Terrorists: Iran

In a Monday statement, Qassemi congratulated the Iraqi government and nation on successfully holding their parliamentary elections and said with their turnout in elections, the Iraqis once again attempted to strengthen their achievements and victories in fight against terrorism with a national and resolute will.

“The people of Iraq showed that they can play a key role in consolidating Iraq’s stability, tranquility and thriving economy as well as regional security under the guidance of religious scholars and through national unity,” he noted.

The spokesman also added the Islamic Republic calls for further strengthening of political partnership and democracy in Iraq.

“We are prepared to contribute to the development and construction of Iraq,” he concluded.

People in Iraq voted Saturday in the first parliamentary elections since the country declared victory over ISIS terrorist group. Around 7,000 candidates, representing 205 political entities, vied for 329 seats in the parliamentary elections.

The electoral commission of Iraq announced that 44.5 percent of those eligible had cast their ballots in the elections.

Informed sources say a predominantly Shia political bloc, led by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, appears to be leading in parliamentary elections.

An election commission source said Abadi’s Nasr (Victory) coalition was the frontrunner, followed by another Shiite bloc headed by cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

International Outcry at Israel’s Aggression

Israel’s violence against the protesting Palestinians have sparked outcry from many regional and trans-regional states as well as international rights bodies.

Iran has condemned Israel’s massacre of Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip. In a tweet, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said while Palestinians are killed by Israeli forces, US President Donald Trump is celebrating the relocation of the US embassy from Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem Al-Quds.

Secretary General of Lebanon’s Hezbollah Movement Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah vehemently condemned the Israeli aggression and said what is unfolding today in Palestine is the continuation of the crimes which have been underway over the past 70 years.

He went on to say that the US provocative measures in the Palestinian lands are adopted with the aim of putting further pressure on Iran as the main sponsor of resistance front in the region.

The European Union has urged utmost restraint to avoid further loss of lives in Gaza.

Russia has expressed concern about the transfer of the US embassy, saying it can increase tensions in the region. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also condemned the move as “very very unfortunate”.

The UN Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has called for an independent l investigation into Israel’s aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza. It also urged Israel to immediately put an end to its violence in the region.

Amnesty International said in a tweet that the bloodshed along Gaza’s border fence with Israel was an “abhorrent violation” of human rights.

Arab League chief, Ahmed Abul Gheit, slammed certain “shameful” countries, which he said were celebrating the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem al-Quds.

Iranian, German FMs Discuss Berlin’s Plan to Save Nuclear Deal

During the Monday conversation, the two sides conferred on plans by the Germany as well as the EU to preserve the nuclear accord after the US’ withdrawal.

Zarif, who is on an official visit to Moscow, stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran is giving a second chance to diplomacy in a short span of time to safeguard the benefits of the JCPOA for the Iranian nation.

For his part, the German foreign minister confirmed that there is a time limit to save the Iran nuclear deal and said his government is developing plans at the national and EU levels to preserve the JCPOA and guarantee Iran’s interests in the deal by exploring various options available.

Zarif arrived in Moscow earlier Monday at the top of a high-ranking political and economic delegation. It is the second leg of his three-nation tour which earlier took him to China.

Upon arrival, Araqchi met and exchanged views with Secretary General of the European Union External Action Service (EEAS) Helga Schmid.

Meetings between Iranian and European experts kicked off on Monday and will run until Tuesday, May 15, before Iranian and European foreign ministers sit down for talks.

In the aftermath of Washington’s pullout, Europeans are seeking ways to protect the interests of their firms doing business in Iran and help them escape the brunt of the upcoming US sanctions.

Senior EU politicians recently threatened that the 28-nation bloc is ready to challenge any move that may harm their businesses in the Iranian market at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

US Relocation of Embassy Not to Go Unpunished: Iran’s Larijani

Addressing an emergency meeting of the IPU’s Permanent Palestine Committee in Tehran, Larijani underlined that the US doesn’t remain committed to any treaty.

“The provocative moves by the US to withdraw from the JCPOA and relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds will create more tensions in the region and the world,” he said during the Monday meeting.

He then called on Islamic states to get united against the imprudent and illegitimate move of US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

Larijani referred to the widespread objections by many Arab states to the US move to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds and added the objections need to be backed by some serious practical steps.

“Today all the world has come to this conclusion that the US is the origin of chaos and insecurity in the whole world.”

He then referred to the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and said the US remains committed to no international treaty.

“One day it violates the Paris Climate Agreement and breaches its customs duty with China and the EU. Then, the other day, under pressure, it retreats and resumes its earlier agreements with the EU. One day, it sets unjust laws for entrance of immigrants from Islamic states and the other day, it withdraws from the JCPOA which was signed by itself. One day it says will not remain in Syria and the other day urges regional states to provide it with money for remaining in Syria,” he noted.

Iran’s parliament speaker then added the US has been supporting terrorism since a long time ago and added the US officials have confessed that Washington created ISIS.

“This shows that the US is suffering from decision-making crisis and deals with the international issues in an unconsidered manner. The US president can’t recognize the long-term fallouts of his decisions.”

Larijani underlined that today the Palestinians need assistance from freedom-seeking people across the world more than ever and added backing the oppressed nation of Palestine is not only a humanitarian move but also a considered measure to help those people who have paid a heavy price for defending the Islamic World.

He lashed out at the international silence over the horrible developments in the Palestinian lands and said the Palestinians want to have the right to decide for themselves.

Larijani then referred to the Zionist regime’s repeated failures in the region and said the latest developments initiated by Israel are aimed at covering up its defeats.

He finally called on the Islamic states to get united in fight against the US’ unjust move against the Palestinians.
