UN Security Council Strongly Condemns Ahvaz Terror Attack

The Security Council’s press statement was issued on Monday by Council President Nikki R. Hailey from the United States:

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack that took place in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Ahvaz, on 22 September.  The terrorist attack, at a military parade, resulted in at least 24 people killed, including children, and 60 others injured.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and they wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and all other relevant authorities in this regard.

The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.  They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

EU Finalising Offers to Meet Iran’s Demands: Mogherini

Speaking in a Monday meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New York, Mogherini said the bloc will finalise and implement the “operational solutions” soon.

During the talks held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the two sides also exchanged views on regional issues including Syria and Yemen.

Zarif and Mogherini also made the finalarrangements for the P4+1’s Tuesday afternoon meeting.

Earlier, Zarif also held talks with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian on various issues of mutual interest, particularly the Iran nuclear deal.

EU Finalising Offers to Meet Iran’s Demands: MogheriniEarlier this month, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi had noted that the offers made by Europeans to save the Iran nuclear deal had so far failed to meet Iran’s expectation, but Tehran was still hopeful Europe could convince it to remain in the deal.

Back in May, the US walked out of the deal and since then is working to re-impose its sanctions on Tehran and push the world to cut trade with Iran.

Tehran has announced its continued commitment to the deal is conditional on EU’s binding guarantees assuring Iran its interests will be served if it remains in the deal.

The EU has offered Iran a support package to compensate for the US pullout, which obliges the European Investment Bank to support EU firms willing to enter Iranian markets, among other measures.

Iran has announced the package is acceptable at the macro level, but talks are underway between the two sides on details of the package.

No Hope for Change in Trump’s Behaviour: Iran’s Rouhani

He made the remarks in a meeting with a group of senior media directors of the United States in New York.

Last year, the President of the United States withdrew from a very important agreement without any reason and later threatened the Iranian nation, he noted.

Therefore, these actions could not be simply forgotten, he added, ruling out the possibility of a meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“Before any move, these wrong actions must be compensated,” added the Iranian president.

He further stressed that Iran has been committed to fulfilling its obligations under the Iran nuclear deal so far, and if the five countries adhere to their commitments, we can maintain it.

Otherwise, we will naturally make our own decision, he added.

“Once the US, Europe, and others boycotted the Islamic Republic for a few years, but they saw the outcome and finally came to the negotiating table. This bitter experience has already been repeated,” underlined Rouhani.

Regarding the role of some countries in the Ahvaz terrorist incident, he pointed out that there was a major terrorist act and it is a shame that some countries refuse to call it a terrorist attack.

The remarks were made by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a Monday meeting with a group of athletes and medal winners of the 2018 Asian Games.

The leader vowed that the Islamic Republic of Iran will harshly punish the people behind the deadly attack.

He said the terrorist attack on the parade in Ahvaz once again revealed that the Iranian nation faces deep animosity on its path towards progress and promotion.

Iranians Will Never Compete with Israelis
He further praised the Iranian young athletes for their great bravery and honours they acieve for the Islamic Republic in science, defence and sports areas.

The leader referred to the threats made against the Iranian sportsmen in international events by certain foreign centres and said showing humility to arrogant powers is not honourable at all.

“Therefore, you should not give in to the unfair pressure imposed by certain sports bodies threatening to marginalize you if you decide not to compete with certain rivals,” he noted.

Elaborating on the Islamic Republic’s policy to boycott sportsmen from Israel, Ayatollah Khamenei said since the earlier days of the Islamic Revolution, Iran has never recognized the Zionist regime of Israel as well as the Apartheid regime of South Africa which collapsed later.

“The Zionist regime of Israel will suffer the same fate of the apartheid regime of South Africa,” he said.

The leader then underlined that the Islamic Republic will never hold competition with the sportsmen of the Zionist regime.

He cited the Iranian wrestler Alireza Karimi as a real champion who intentionally lost a match at the Under-23 World Championship in Poland not to face an Israeli opponent in the next round.

Iran Looking for Brave Soldier Who Saved People in Ahvaz AttackIn his Instagram post, Chief of the Human Resources Department of Iran’s Public Conscription Organization Brigadier General Moussa Kamali praised the soldier, saying the soldier bravely rescued a number of civilians without being equipped with any special coverage or gun.

“Instead of taking shelter, the soldier decided to protect his compatriots,” he noted.

At least 25 people were killed and about 60 others injured after the terrorists affiliated with regional sponsors of terrorism attacked a military parade in Ahvaz.

The parade was held as part of a ceremony to mark the beginning of an imposed war on Iran by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 1980.

Denmark to Extradite Al-Ahvazi Terrorists to Iran If Allegations Proven

“If there are some who are demonstrably members of these terrorist movements, or have affiliations with them, then they should be sentenced by a Danish judge and imprisoned,” said Søren Espersen, spokesman for Denmark’s foreign ministry, while speaking to Denmark Radio.

Asked if Denmark would extradite those accused of carrying out the Ahvaz attack, Espersen said that “I think we should, if there is enough evidence for that”.

Separately, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen told Denmark Radio that the Danish authorities are investigating the allegations and Denmark residents will face consequences if it is found they are connected with the attack.

Samuelsen also said that Denmark condemns terrorist attacks wherever they take place in the world.

On Saturday, four gunmen opened fire on civilians and military personnel near a military parade commemorating the beginning of the Sacred Defence Week, marking the start of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s war in 1980.

Iran says the separatist group Al-Ahvazieh is responsible for the attack, which left about 25 dead and over 60 injured.

On Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned ambassadors of the Netherlands and Denmark, which stand accused of hosting elements of the terrorist group that claimed responsibility for the attack.

Iran has asked them to extradite members of the terrorist group so they can be prosecuted for their crimes.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said it is not acceptable that the terrorists are not considered as terrorist in Europe just because they have not committed attacks in Europe.

Iran’s Hails OPEC’s Decision to Reject Trump’s Call for Output Hike

“The US seeks to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero even for a month, but that dream would not come to reality,” Bijan Zangeneh said on Monday.

OPEC members and leading non-OPEC producer, Russia, on Sunday ruled out any additional increase in crude output, dealing a blow to Trump’s re-election ambitions.

Trump, whose decision to leave an international nuclear deal with Iran and reimpose sanctions on the country has pushed oil prices to levels not seen since 2014, on Thursday demanded that OPEC members lower the prices.

“We protect the countries of the Middle East, they would not be safe for very long without us, and yet they continue to push for higher and higher oil prices! We will remember,” Trump tweeted.

His demand came after benchmark Brent oil reached $80 a barrel this month, despite his earlier assurances that US curbs on Iran’s oil exports would not affect the market because Saudi Arabia would make up for the shortage.

“The OPEC monopoly must get prices down now!” Trump wrote on Sunday.

Before the Sunday meeting, Zangeneh had warned fellow OPEC members against any effort to appease the US, saying Tehran would veto any decision by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries that would harm Iran’s national interests.

On Monday, he expressed hope that producers would not yield to Trump’s “orders” to turn the taps on.

The Iranian minister has said an agreement reached in 2016 between OPEC member states and allied producers to cut output was “in tatters.”

Zangeneh did not attend the Joint OPEC/Non-OPEC Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) held in Algeria on Sunday. He had stated that any decision on a new production deal by the committee would be “void” and “invalid.”

OPEC’s decision is seen as another victory for Iran which had also warned of two OPEC members seeking to damage the group and carry out “anti-Iranian policies” at the behest of the US, apparently referring to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Thousands Attend Funeral for Victims of Iran Terror Attack

People turned out in droves to attend the funeral which was held on September 24, 2018.

They chanted slogans against the US and hypocrites while paying their last respect to the victims.

Present at the ceremony was Iranian Intelligence Minister Mohammad Alavi, who offered condolences on the tragedy.

“The criminals who committed this crime should know that people of Islamic Iran will not remain silent in the face of this crime. The crime of killing a 6-year-old child and shooting women and children is not something that the Islamic Republic can condone,” said the minister.

“The terrorists were killed, and their accomplices will be identified to the last person thanks to efforts by security, police and judicial authorities,” he added.

The intelligence minister said most of the perpetrators have been identified and they will face justice.

“That will send the world the message that Iran is no place for such crimes, and that criminals will pay the price for their acts,” he said.

Rouhani in New York to Tell UNGA US Violating Int’l Law

Speaking upon arrival at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, the president said the atmosphere of this year’s meeting is different from the previous years.

“Our goal is to explain Iran’s policies on the region and the world in these gatherings,” he said.

“Unfortunately, Americans have refused to fulfill many of their obligations across the world, including those under the JCPOA, and this is a chance to explain their violations and breaches of international rules,” he said.

The US walked out of the nuclear accord early May, and it is currently restoring anti-Iran sanctions suspended under the accord.

Washington is also working to cut Iran’s global trade and hamper the country’s oil sale.

US President Donald Trump, who has hardened the US line on Iran since taking power in January 2017,  will dedicate a big part of his UNGA speech to Iran.

Rouhani also said Monday he will meet some world leaders and attend meetings and gives interviews on the sidelines of the 73th round of UNGA.
