President Rouhani in Zurich to Discuss JCPOA, Yemen Crisis

Accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, President Rouhani arrived in the Swiss city of Zurich on Monday, and was warmly welcomed by Switzerland’s President Alain Berset at the airport.

The Swiss president also wrote a message in Persian in his Twitter account to welcome the Iranian president’s visit, and show how significant it is for Bern and the European Union.

In an address before embarking on his visit to Austria and Switzerland on Monday, Rouhani underlined that one of the main goals of his trip to the European states is to take advantage of the huge untapped capacities for strengthening ties with Bern and Vienna.

He then referred to the importance of the Iran nuclear deal at the international level and said the nuclear deal’s survival is in the interests of region and the whole world and added today all remaining sides of the JCPOA unanimously condemn the US for its illegal withdrawal from the accord, a report by Fars News Agency said.

President Rouhani said most of the talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries over the Iran nuclear deal were held either in Switzerland or Austria and added the two countries provided the involved sides with an appropriate forum for talks.

He then added the remaining sides of the JCPOA are working hard to save the nuclear deal.

“One of the main reasons behind hard efforts of the remaining sides of the JCPOA is to prevent it from collapsing after the US illegal withdrawal. During my visit to Austria, I will discuss the issue with the officials of the country as the new head of the EU,” Rouhani said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian president said the Europeans are set to hand over their support package to Iran in the coming days to convince the Islamic Republic to remain in the deal after the US withdrawal.

“We will discuss the issue of the package as well. I will also raise other regional and international issues on which we had held regular negotiations before.”

He then referred to the crises in Syria and Yemen and said during his stay in Europe, the sufferings of the innocent people of the two countries will be discussed.

“I will exchange views with Austrian and Swiss officials on our role and responsibility to restore peace and security to the region.”

According to Rouhani, during the visit, a number of documents will be signed in various areas between Iran and the European states.

Tahdig: A Yummy, Globally Popular Part of Persian Cuisine

Tahdig is the part of rice or pilaf at the bottom of the dish which turns red or brown and becomes hardened and scorched due to the heat of the oven. If Tahdig contains ingredients other than rice, it is called Tahchin.

Tahdig is served on a separate plate at the table. The Tahdig which is taken out of the dish as one whole piece without being broken up is called “whole Tahdig.” However, Tahdig does not have to be a whole piece all the time. It could be served as large pieces as big as the palm of the hand. The best way to separate Tahdig from the bottom of the dish is to put the dish in cold water. Of course, the dish must be removed straight from the flame onto the cold water. Otherwise, it will be more difficult to take the Tahdig off the bottom of the dish. In fact, Tahdig must become cold all of a sudden, not gradually. Another important point about Tahdig is that it must be taken out of the dish and served immediately; otherwise, it will get “old,” which means it will lose its pleasant taste.

Iranian Tahdig: A Meal for the Whole World

The New York Times publishes the recipe for a certain food every Sunday. Once, it published the recipe for the macaroni Tahdig. The newspaper explained that Tahdig is the same thing formed at the bottom of Iranian rice and is scorched and crispy. It is noteworthy that Tahdig is not made with rice only. Tahdig also refers to the crispy part at the bottom of other foods in a dish such as macaroni, and can contain other ingredients such as bread and potatoes.

How Tahdig Became Part of Our Lives

There are two stories regarding how Tahdig and Tahchin first came into being. It is said that servants would eat the leftovers of kings in kitchens after kings finished their meal. One day, servants at the court of the Persian king Naser al-Din Shah Qajar get into a quarrel over the food left over at the bottom of the dishes (Tahdig). The chief of the servants calls the chef and asks what all the fuss is about. Then, the king learns about the fight over food. He orders part of that Tahdig is sent to him. The king eats it and takes pleasure in the food. From then on, the king orders the bottom part of the food (Tahdig) to be sent to him first as an appetizer. And that is how Tahdig finds a special status!

And this is how the Tahchin was created: One day, one of the chefs at a king’s court does not pay enough attention to the rice and chicken he was making. Hence, the rice becomes hard and turns into Tahdig. Fearing his life, the chef adds some saffron to make the food tasty. Then he adds chicken meat, yoghurt and eggs to Tahdig. The move not only saves the chef’s life, but also results in the creation of the first saffron-flavoured Tahchin.

Tahdig or Tahchin; That’s the Question!

Tahdig is the scorched and hardened part of rice in a dish. The secret to its delicious taste is salt and oil! But if an ingredient is added to Tahdig, it is called Tahchin. Henceforth, there are different types of Tahchin, namely the ones containing bread, potatoes, beet, and spinach, as well rice mixed with saffron, yoghurt, eggs, lettuce, dough, sesame and yoghurt, vine leaves, onions, aubergine and courgette.

Tahdig-Loving Foreigners!

The interesting point about the Iranian Tahdig is that it seems only we Iranians can make it! Although recipe for making Tahdig is found on different English-language websites, the true art of making Tahdig lies with Iranians. Making good Tahdig requires great skill, which is only found in Iranian chefs!

Ingredients for Potato Tahdig

Potatoes: 1 or 2 potatoes

Butter: 2 teaspoonfuls

Liquid Oil: 3 teaspoonfuls

Ground Saffron: a pinch

Water: 1 tablespoonful

Salt: one eighth of a spoonful

Recipe

First, slice the potatoes. The slices should be completely thin and consistent. Then sprinkle ground saffron on the potato slices, add a teaspoonful of water to the potato and allow the water to be mixed well with the saffron and slices.

Pour the oil onto the bottom of the casserole and leave it on the flame for a few minutes to get hot. Then turn off the heat and lay the potato slices on the bottom and the inside wall of the casserole.

Sprinkle some salt onto the potato slices.

Turn on the flame and heat the potato slices at medium temperature for around five minutes. Then add steamed rice or macaroni and put on the casserole lid. After the food is cooked through, turn off the flame and wait a little until the potato Tahdig comes off the bottom of the casserole.

You may put the casserole in cold water first to speed up work and make sure the Tahdig will come off all at once when you hold the casserole upside down.

The Tahdig could be served with different types of pilaf or macaroni and served along with the entrée.

The deal named “The Glory of Persepolis” was clinched in Tehran between Ali Jirofti, the managing director of the Iran Tourism Development Company, and Helmut Riguart, the CEO of an Austrian firm.

“The Glory of Persepolis project, which has been agreed to be bankrolled through financing by an Austrian bank, will be implemented in five phases,” said Jirofti as quoted by Mehr News Agency.

“In the first phase, the site of Persepolis and its components will be made safe and secure using the standards of UNESCO and the Cultural Heritage Organization,” he said.

“Then a new entrance building will be prepared. It will contain different sections, including a box office, coffee shops, WC, handicrafts and souvenir shops, book shops, etc.”

“In the second phase, a VIP hall, a conference hall and an electronic exit gate will be prepared,” he noted.

“In this phase, arrangements will also be made to create a tour guide system at different hours during day and night,” said Jirofti.

“In the fourth and fifth phases, the Persepolis museum will be completed, and the outdoor area at the Persepolis site will also be organized to host major events. The agreement also provides for expert training for staff members,” he said.

He underlined that the Iranian cultural heritage authority will be present all through the project as a monitor to make sure UNESCO standards are observed during all phases of the project.

“The implementation of the project will create between 300 and 500 direct jobs,” he said.

The top Austrian executive, in turn, said his company and the group of firms working with it are experts in the affairs pertaining to historical sites, and hence, activities to be done will definitely pose no threat to Persepolis.

He said the project is geared to developing the Persepolis site and preparing it to give visitors a fresh and unique experience.

Victims of MKO Terrorism to Send Protest Petition to UN

Javad Hasheminejad, the head of Habilian Foundation, told ISNA on Monday that the petition will be signed by families of over 12,000 Iranians martyred by the MKO.

MKO is designated a terrorist organisation by Iran and Iraq. The notorious group is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks against Iranian civilians and government officials, including a deadly bomb attack on the headquarters of the Islamic Republic Party in 1981 that martyred the head of Supreme Judicial Council, Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti, and several other top officials.

It also fought against Iran in the war imposed by Iraq on the Islamic Republic (1980-88), and helped former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in his brutal crackdown on his Kurdish opponents in 1990s.

Washington and the European Union removed MKO from their lists of terrorist organizations in 2012 and 2009, respectively.

MKO terrorists now enjoy freedom of activity in the US and Europe, and even hold meetings with American and EU officials in attendance.

MKO a US Tool

Hasheminejad said western governments, including the US, are using the terrorist group as a tool in their standoff with Tehran.

The NGO chief said the coming to power of Donald Trump, the controversial US president who has hardened the US line on Tehran, has emboldened the group to seek extending its activities inside and outside Iran.

Pointing to the annual meeting of MKO held in Paris on Saturday, the NGO chief censured the French government for giving the green light to MKO activities and providing the group with facilities that it does not offer to governments.

“There is a question that European governments should respond: Why they for over 30 years been a haven for those who have killed the Iranian people? They should respond to the Iranian nation and victims of terror,” he said.

Top Iranian Entrepreneurs Rewarded at “National Brand, National Might” Congress

The awards were delivered in the fifth National Congress of government officials and managers of top Iranian firms titled “National Brand, National Might”.

The event, organized by Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, is aimed at recognizing strengths of Iranian companies and introducing grounds for cooperation between Iranian and foreign firms.

The top economic actors were chosen by an evaluation committee in the three categories of value creation, management and entrepreneurship, and consumer confidence.

The national event was attended by senior Iranian officials including Labour Minister Ali Rabi’ei.

Trump’s Bid to Bring Iran’s Oil Exports to Zero Impossible Dream

Jahangiri underlined that the oil sector is one of the domains where Washington is planning to impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“The Americans have targeted several areas, the first of which is [the] oil [sector],” said the vice president.

“They brazenly announced that they will bring Iran’s petroleum sales to zero by November, and they are begging Saudi Arabia to replace Iran; but anyone who is familiar with the international climate knows that increasing output by two million barrels is a joke and not possible,” Jahangiri noted.

He further said any country that wants to replace Iran on the oil market has betrayed the Iranian nation and will pay for it.

“We will keep selling oil to friendly countries,” he said.

“We have held talks with friendly states and have opened up channels to sell petroleum. Iran’s crude oil will be offered on the local bourse as well,” he said.

The vice president said the United States also wants to affect Iran’s financial transactions.

He said a current made up of Israel, the US and Saudi Arabia wants to put the brakes on Iran’s economic progress and to disrupt the relationship between the Iranian government and the private sector.

Jahangiri noted that Tehran plans to bring Washington to failure as far as Iran’s oil sales are concerned.

Iran Dismisses Accusations Levelled in US’ Report on Human Trafficking

In a Monday statement, Qassemi said Tehran rejects the biased, biased, and politically-motivated report by the US State Department which has been built on unreliable sources and information.

“The report levels baseless and unrealistic accusations against other countries including the Islamic Republic on human trafficking,” he said.

The spokesman also said through such reports the US government is seeking to distract the world’s public opinion from its meddlesome and destabilising policies which have considerably prepared the ground for creation and expansion of organised criminal networks of human traffickers across the world, especially in Western Asia and Africa.

He then referred to the growing concerns of the international community over human trafficking, particularly trafficking of women and children, saying the US’ unilateral moves to rank other countries based on organised crimes including human trafficking and release biased reports against them not only stand in violation of the international law and regulations but also undermine international cooperation and efforts in fight against the crimes.

“Therefore the US government should be held accountable for its unilateral moves,” he concluded.

In its latest report on human trafficking released on June 28, the US State Department said Belarus, Iran, Russia, and Turkmenistan remain among the worst offenders of human trafficking and forced labour.

The department’s annual Trafficking report titled “In Persons” was unveiled in a ceremony in Washington by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and presidential adviser Ivanka Trump.

It evaluates 187 countries and territories and ranks them into four tiers (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 2 Watch List, and Tier 3), with Tier 1 being the best and Tier 3 the worst.

Russia, Belarus, Iran, and Turkmenistan were among 22 countries ranked as Tier 3. Others included Myanmar, China, North Korea, Syria, and Venezuela.

Trump’s Lawyer Admits Iran Protests Backed by Foreigners

“Those protests are not happening spontaneously,” Giuliani said. “They are happening because of many of our people in Albania [which hosts an MKO compound] and many of our people here and throughout the world.”

It was unclear whether “our people” was intended to mean the US or the MKO, Guardian reported.

A number of Iranian cities were a scene of protests over economic hardships early January. The protests were peaceful in the beginning, but later took a violent turn and led to clashes between some protestors and police forces.

Also last week, Tehran’s grand bazaar saw several days of protests in the wake of a dramatic decline in the value of rial that has depressed markets.

Real Chance for Regime Change

Speaking in the meeting held in Paris on Saturday, Giuliani, the former New York mayor, called for a regime change in Iran.

“We are now realistically being able to see an end to the regime in Iran,” Giuliani told a crowd of about 4,000, many of them refugees and young eastern Europeans who had been bussed in to attend the rally in return for a weekend trip to Paris.

In his address to the rally of MKO, who for decades was listed as a terrorist organization in the US and Europe and is widely seen as a personality cult, Giuliani said the fall of the government in Tehran would be brought about by economic isolation.

“This government is about to collapse, and this is the time to turn on the pressure,” Giuliani said, according to Bloomberg.

“Thank God my president turned his back on that very dangerous nuclear deal with Iran. We are not going to do business with the world’s top sponsor of terrorism,” he claimed.

In May, Trump abrogated the 2015 international nuclear deal with Iran and ordered a campaign of intense economic pressure, threatening sanctions against any foreign company doing business with Iran and calling for an end to trade in Iranian oil by November.

“When the greatest economic power stops doing business with you, then you collapse … and the sanctions will become greater, greater and greater,” Reuters quoted Giuliani as saying.

“Freedom is right around the corner … Next year I want to have this convention in Tehran!” Giuliani shouted.

Giuliani was one of 33 senior US officials and military brass at the year’s conference on Saturday. Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker and a close Trump ally, Bill Richardson, former US ambassador to the United Nations, US energy secretary and Democratic governor of New Mexico, were also in attendance.

US Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi also sent a message to the conference, expressing hope for establishment of what she called a democracy in Iran.

It was unclear if the speakers at the Saturday conference were paid. The MKO have been known for paying very high fees, particularly to such figures as Giuliani and Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton, among others.

Europe to Be Filled with Drugs, Refugees If Iran Stops Efforts: Minister

“In numerous international meetings, I have stated that our cooperation with Europe in the field of (the fight against) drugs is a unilateral cooperation and they do not make effective efforts in this area,” Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told reporters at a press conference in Tehran on Sunday.

“Today, we see that the production of illicit drugs in Afghanistan has doubled compared to the past, reaching about 10,000 tons,” he said, adding, “This year, our forces have had more than 1,000 clashes with smugglers and seized nearly 1,200 tons of illicit drugs, part of which was supposed to go to Europe.”

“We regard the issue of asylum seekers as well as the fight against illicit drugs as a humanitarian issue,” Rahmani Fazli noted.

“If just for 24 hours I, as the interior minister, turn a blind eye to these two issues, then Europe will face a million refugees and two thousand tons of illicit drugs,” he cautioned.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past decades.

The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers during the past four decades.
