Two Iranian-Americans Win State Seats in US Elections

Eskamani ran against Republican Stockton Reeves to replace Rep. Mike Miller in what was described as a hotly-contested race. District 47 includes Orlando and Winter Park.

“Together we’ve made history, in not only challenging the status quo and flipping a competitive state house seat– but in also electing the first Iranian-American to any public office in Florida,” Eskamani wrote in an email announcement after winning the election.

She is a UCF graduate and Orlando native who served as senior director of public affairs and communications at Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida for six years before filing to run for a seat in the Florida House.

Anna Kaplan (D-Great Neck) also defeated state Sen. Elaine Phillips (R-Flower Hill) in a tight race for state Senate District 7, unseating the one-term state Senator to help cede full state government control to Democrats.

With 291 of 292 polling precincts counted, Kaplan earned 58,118 votes to Phillips’ 48,180 – an unusually high turnout – with victory margin of 54.66 to 45.32 percent.

Kaplan, an Iranian-American, was born in Tabriz, Iran. She immigrated following the 1979 Revolution in Iran.

Millions of Americans headed to the polls on Election Day. Results show that US Democrats have taken control of the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years, a crucial victory that spells trouble for President Donald Trump in the second half of his first term in office.

To win the House, all Democrats needed to do was to flip 23 Republican seats, a task that proved too easy for the opposition party.

While the Senate was a lost cause from the get-go, Democrats were highly optimistic that they would win back the lower chamber of Congress.

Initial results of the frenzied midterm elections projected Democrats as the next majority party in the House.

Democrats will now have the opportunity to frustrate Trump’s legislative plans and ramp up their “obstructionist” approach, as the president would like to call it.

Two Muslim Women in Congress for First Time in History

Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s nominee, are expected to win their respective races and enter Congress as first ever Muslim women.

Omar, in addition to being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, will also be the first Somali-American member.

Return of US Sanctions Real Challenge to Iranian People: Australian Ambassador

“These are real challenge to the people of Iran,” Ian Biggs told IFP News in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of an international seminar on effects of conflict on women, children and environment on Tuesday.

“These are deeply concerning prospects,” he said, when asked about his view on the US sanctions targeting Iranian population, including women and children.

The US reinstated sanctions against Iran’s oil and banking industry on Monday, following its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and pledges that Washington will place maximum pressure on Iran.

Humanitarian supplies are formally exempted from sanctions, but experts believe the sanctions are so severe that they will deter any kind of trade with Iran.

In 2011, the last time the US was tightening anti-Iran sanctions, Washington’s pressure led to severe shortages of life-saving medicines and food staples, as foreign banks and companies were avoiding transactions with Iran for fear of being penalized.

Obstacles to Int’l Engagement with Iran
Biggs said the sanctions could also create obstacles to those who seek to promote international engagement with Iran.

However, the senior Australian diplomat said all needed to wait to see what sanctions will lead to.

“I cannot say anything final at this stage, because we still don’t quite understand what they [US] want to achieve,” he said.

“We will have to see what they mean in practice for all those who are living here and trying to promote international engagement with Iran. But it’s a real challenge to the people,” he said.

Australia to Work with Iran
Biggs suggested that Australian diplomats in Tehran will do their best to promote cooperation with Iran.

“This is a very difficult time. We will be doing what we can, because the efforts of the international community have been to work with Iran,” he said.

Biggs said the Australian diplomats have in the past 50 years been working “ to make sure that prosperity, development, safety [and all] those fundamental human rights are observed in this country”.

On Monday, the US listed more than 700 Iranian banks, firms and persons under sanctions in the latest phase of a pressure campaign.

The US administration has called it the biggest sanctions the country had ever imposed against Iran.

This is while other signatories to the nuclear deal and a big number of other countries oppose the unilateral US move.

The EU is trying to create financing mechanisms to insulate European companies from US sanctions.

The US has vowed to pursue any firm seeking to bypass the sanctions.

Iran Army, IRGC Hold Joint Air Defence Drill

Tuesday marked the second and final day of the exercises, dubbed Defenders of Velayat Skies 2018 drills, which involve the Army’s Air Force and the Aerospace Division of the IRGC.

The joint forces conducted the strikes using medium-range surface-to-air Shalamcheh missiles and the Tabas medium-range surface-to-air missile defence system.

The strikes hit the designated targets, according to Iranian media outlets.

General Seyyed Mahmoud Moussavi, the spokesperson for the exercises, said, “The manufacturing and deployment of this equipment with advanced technologies shows that we are not faced with any bottlenecks [on the path of enhancing the country’s defencive strength].”

“We can meet all our needs relying on domestic capabilities,” he added.

The drills began on Monday in an area measuring 500,000 square kilometers across Iran.

The first phase of the drills saw the joint forces taking positions and rapidly spreading around the country, while detecting, identifying, intercepting, and destroying threats and engaging in electronic warfare against mock targets.

The maneuvers came only a day after the United States imposed new sanctions on Iran.

Iran FM Sends Message to World on US Sanctions

What follows is the full text of his message:

The US administration appears to believe that imposing illegal draconian sanctions on Iran will bring about such pain to our nation that it will force us to submit to its will—no matter how absurd, unlawful, or fundamentally flawed its demands are. We have weathered difficult times in the face of 40 years of American hostility, relying on our own resources. And today we and our partners across the globe will ensure that our people are least affected by this indiscriminate assault in the economic warfare that directly targets them, notwithstanding hypocritical claims by Trump administration to the contrary.

But rather than relying on its discredited addiction to unilateralism and sanctions as tools of statecraft, which are today pushing it further into global isolation, the US is better off addressing the catastrophes and crises it has engineered in our region.

Where to begin?

In 1953?

Or in Afghanistan, where the US created Al Qaeda to fight the Soviets?

Or Iraq, where it supported Saddam—including his use of chemical weapons—or the later invasion of Iraq, to supposedly rid Saddam of those very WMDs?

Or is it that the long-standing and unconditional support for two clients—Saudi Arabia and Israel—blinds the US to their appalling atrocities that have resulted in global indignation and engendered insecurity to us all—the US itself included?

Taking a long hard look at its own wrong choices and changing its approach from a failed one it has stubbornly followed for decades—instead of prescribing behavioural changes for Iran—will be far more effective in bringing about resolution to conflicts and crises that have bedevilled the Middle East for far too long.

President Trump’s predecessors also began crafting their Iran policy with similar bravado; but came around to accepting and respecting the reality of Iran as they became more experienced in office.

My name is Javad Zarif, and this is Iran’s message.

Mesmerizing Beauty of Tehran’s Jamshidieh Park in Autumn

Jamshidieh Forest Park or Jamshidieh Rocky Park with an area of about 10 hectares is situated in Tehran’s 4th district.

Unique architecture, artificial waterfalls, beautiful ponds and artistic elements create a lovely view of the region and make this park distinct from other parks in the capital.

In 1976, the park was opened to the public and turned into one of the major tourist attractions of the capital.

The park is 1,800 metres from Niavaran Street located between the rocky walls of the Kolakchal Mountain, Jamshidieh Street and Kolakchal Road.

From inside the park you can reach the slopes of Kolakchal and continue the hiking path to the mountain’s peak.

Jamshidieh is situated at the highest point of Tehran with a lake, adjacent waterfalls and rocky facades. The park has four entrances.

Due to its proximity to the mountains of northern Tehran, it is always one of the first places in the capital covered in snow.

As you climb the stairs behind the waterfall, you reach the upper floors of the park to have a beautiful view of Tehran.

The park has been renovated twice since its launch, and in 1995, sixteen hectares were added to its area. The new area was named “Ferdowsi” after the Iranian famous poet.

Jamshidieh Art House, amphitheatre, pond, pergola, birds’ cage, numerous statues with natural, cultural and mystical concepts, as well as restaurants, fountains and restrooms are among the facilities of the park.

One of the unique features of Jamshidiah is its rocky rough floor that reminds people of the pure nature of forest gardens.

If you continue your way to the upper sections of the park, you finally get to the place where you can look at Tehran differently.

What follows are photos of the park during the fall season retrieved from ILNA:

Iran to Keep Doing Business with World despite US Sanctions

Abdolnassr Hemmati, the governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), was quoted by media as saying that Tehran was in direct contact with its partners in search for mechanisms to keep the flow of trade alive in face of the sanctions.

“We have been in talks with our trade partners and all the necessary actions have been taken for Iran’s interactions to continue,” Hemmati said.

“We were expecting these sanctions, so we had plans in place for them and beyond… considering the possibility of banks being disconnected from SWIFT we have considered alternatives to replace it.”

Earlier, Iran’s Economy Minister Farhad Dejpasand said that Iran had devised a serious plan to pass through what he described as a crucial juncture that the sanctions, as he said, had created.

Dejpasand said the details of the plan could not be specified, but stressed that using domestic resources was a primary objective.

On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin unveiled what they described as one of the toughest regimes of sanctions against the Islamic Republic – sanctions that would most significantly comprise banking restrictions and bans on Iran’s oil exports.

Pompeo said the US had successfully persuaded over 20 countries to stop or dramatically reduce their oil imports from Iran, causing Tehran’s overall sales to suffer by more than 1 million barrels per day.

UK, Norway Vow Commitment to Doing Business with Iran

In his Monday talks with Zarif, UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt underlined the commitment of London and other parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to continued implementation of the 2015 deal.

He also highlighted the need for immediate establishment and implementation of Europe’s special payment mechanism known as Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in a bid to maintain economic cooperation with Iran.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide also expressed her country’s support for the implementation of JCPOA, and underlined the need for expansion of mutual cooperation between Tehran and Oslo.

Zarif and Eriksen Søreide also conferred on the Danish police’s accusation against a Norwegian-Iranian citizen.

The Iranian top diplomat once again expressed Tehran’s preparedness to have all-out cooperation with European governments in order to reveal the truth, stressing the need for shedding light on all aspects of the issue.

Ticket Sale Website Down after 1.5m Rush to Book Place at ACL Final

The rush led to the crash of the website www.Gishe3.ir dedicated by Iran’s Football Federation to the ticket sales.

The crash happened just minutes after the website began to sell online the tickets of the final match, Iranian media reported.

Visitors to the website were faced with a message saying the website has become out of access.

The officials in charge said they were attempting to remove the problem.

The first leg of the match in Tokyo was held on Saturday and ended with a 2-0 victory for the Japanese side.

Now Persepolis fans are hopeful that their team would show a brilliant performance next Saturday at Azadi Stadium in Tehran, where over 85,000 spectators are going to support them.
