Iran to Unveil 112 New Nuclear Achievements Next Month

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Behrouz Kamalvandi said the major achievements to go on display on April 9 will demonstrate the country’s breakthroughs in nuclear material exploration and extraction, nuclear fuel cycle, technical systems, laser technology, and power plant construction.

He said unveiling of the new products would remind the enemy that the sanctions could never undermine Iran.

In 2018, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran unveiled 83 homegrown achievements in the nuclear industry in celebration of the National Nuclear Technology Day.

In last year’s ceremony, President Hassan Rouhani inaugurated a number of the outstanding projects including the process of transferring the first shipment of yellow cake (a type of uranium concentrate powder), produced in a factory in the city of Ardakan, to a Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) in Isfahan.

In recent years, Iranian scientists have made remarkable progress in the field of peaceful nuclear technology despite the sanctions imposed by the West.

It will be the 13th year Iran celebrates a national day to mark its achievements in the nuclear industry.

Iran Says West Sees to Whitewash Halabja Chemical Massacre

In a tweet posted on Saturday, Zarif said Iran and its Kurdish brothers in Iraq will not allow the Halabja chemical attack to be forgotten.

“The West may like to forget about horrors of Halabja & Sardasht—31 years ago today—but neither we, nor our Kurdish brethren, ever will,” read Zarif’s tweet while making a reference to the Iranian city of Sardasht which had been targeted in a similar chemical bombardment by the then Iraqi regime a year earlier.

Some 5,000 people were killed and another 10,000 were injured in the chemical massacre launched by Saddam on his own citizens. The attack on Iran’s Sardasht in June 1987 also left 650 civilians killed.

Zarif said Western governments have always sought to conceal their role in a historic catastrophe which continues to live on through its impacts on the health of the local population in Iran-Iraq border regions.

“First they denied it happened—then they blamed Iran. When it was clear it was their own ally, using their own chemical weapons, they were silent,” said Zarif in his Twitter post.

Iran has always criticized Western governments for their duplicity on dealing with weapons of mass destruction, especially during an eight-year war in Syria where the United States and allies have repeatedly accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons against civilians.

That comes as independent probes have revealed that militants backed by the West and countries in the Middle East have stockpiled chemical weapons in depots in Syria only to have them bombarded by Syrian military planes during the battles.

Iran to Let Women Prisoners Serve Time outside Jail

Massoumeh Ebtekar announced the news on her Twitter page in a post that went viral on social media shortly after it was posted.

She said the Women and Family Affairs Department of the Presidential Office has reached agreement with the Judiciary’s Office for Crime Prevention to enforce that measure.

“Children who have no one to take care of them because their parents are behind bars are highly vulnerable,” she said.

In an interview with the government’s official website dolat.ir, Ebtekar noted she proposed the plan to help women inmates, especially mothers.

“I talked to inmates in women’s prisons [in several cities] face to face. Around three thousand women prisoners told me about their problems and I found out that women who have children are extremely concerned,” she said.

“Good measures have been adopted in women’s prisons in terms of workshops, general hygiene and welfare affairs, but still many problems exit in this domain,” she underlined.

The vice president also responded to a question on whether the plan is only applicable to women prisoners who have children.

“No point has been mentioned in this regard in the memorandum of understanding [with the Judiciary’s Office for Crime Prevention], but women who have little or teenage children, and whose husbands are in prison as well or are not home due to whatever reason and cannot look after their children, will face numerous maladies which cannot be easily overlooked,” Ebtekar said.

She said one of the points mentioned in the agreement is that arrangements be made for some women prisoners with heavy sentences to be able to serve time outside prison with handcuffs and shackles at the discretion of the judge.

“As a case in point, [those convicted of] theft or similar crimes that can serve their sentences outside jail, and this plan definitely does not apply to those convicted of murder,” she said.

The vice president said women prisoners who would be allowed to serve term outside jail can move around only within a few meters of their home or workplace.

Their handcuffs and shackles are sealed and controlled by a geographic information system (GIS), and they send signals immediately if manipulated.

She added the plan has been in force on a trial basis for two years now, and around 250 people have used it so far.

Ebtekar said the number of people who can be covered by the plan annually is much higher than 250.

Iran Condoles with Zimbabwe over Deadly Cyclone

In his Sunday statement, Qassemi also sympathized with the bereaved families of the victims.

At least 31 people have been killed and dozens are missing in parts of eastern Zimbabwe after the country was hit by tropical cyclone Idai which lashed neighbouring Mozambique and Malawi, the government said.

Cyclone Idai has affected more than 1.5 million people in the three southern African countries, according to the United Nations and government officials.

Homes, schools, businesses, hospitals and police stations have been destroyed. Roads have been washed away and thousands are stranded by heavy flooding.

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Information said on Saturday that the deaths were mainly from Chimanimani East, including two students, while at least 40 other people have been injured.

Ancient Bridge of Shadravan; Oldest Bridge in World

Ancient Bridge of Shadravan, Iran

The ancient bridge is located 300 metres south-west of Shushtar in southern Khuzestan province.

It is built on the main branch of Karun River, and now its ruins are seen beside Azadegan Bridge. With 44 arches, it is still used to lead Karun’s water into farms.

According to some eastern quotes, when the Sassanid king Shapur I enslaved the Roman Emperor Valerian, he forced him to build this ancient bridge near Shushtar.

It was registered on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 2009 as the 10th Iranian site in the list.

Turkmen Artists to Perform at Iran’s Kish Island during Nowruz

According to Iran’s Cultural Attaché in the Central Asian country, they would perform a variety of programs to bring joy and delight to the Persian Gulf island.

Reza Khanian, in an interview with IRNA, said 23 Turkmen artists have been invited to the island by the Tourism Department of Kish Free Zone in coordination with the Iranian cultural attaché’s office in Ashgabat.

These artists will perform fascinating programs during their stay in Kish in Nowruz, he added.

“The group consists of the most prominent artists and experts in music, handicrafts and customs of Turkmenistan,” he noted.

Artists from the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat, and the ancient city of Merv are also among them.

Turkmenistan is one of the countries where Nowruz is celebrated in a magnificent way. Famous customs of this ritual, such as preparing Samanu, are popular among Turkmens, added Khanian.

Samanu is a sweet paste made entirely of germinated wheat which is prepared especially for Nowruz (New Year’s holidays) in a large pot.
