Young Offenders Stage Play in Support of ‘Iranian Oliver Twists’

The play, which kicked off on April 22 in the Art Hall of Tehran, will remain on stage until April 28. The theatre is not meant for audience under 12.

“The play which depicts the ordeal of its actors and actresses is not aimed at gathering donations but rather to raise public awareness of the social conditions preparing the ground for misdemeanors,” a report by Honar Online said.

The JDC is home to teenagers under 18 who have committed crimes inadvertently. Some of the teenagers are in dire need of donations to get freed.

The campaign’s main goal is to tap into the teenagers’ talents to prepare the ground for their release from the centre.

Staged last year during the 25th International Theatre Festival of Children & Youth, the play was warmly welcomed by the audiences.

The Oliver Twist by Dickens is notable for its unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid-19th century.

World’s View of Iran Is Wrong: Croat Football Player

Budimir, who has been in Iran for three months, says people around the world have a negative view of Iran for their own reasons.

“When you hear that a country has been under sanction for thirty years, you naturally won’t have high expectations of that country. That was how I felt before I visited Iran about three months ago. But I was shocked when I arrived in Tehran,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Fars news agency.

“It is a city with a population of 8.5 million. It can compete with many European cosmopolitans in terms of various criteria,” he said of the Iranian capital city.

On his decision to transfer his family to Iran, he said his children continue to live in Croatia.

“I didn’t take them with myself to Tehran because I didn’t want them to face a major change in lifestyle.”

He expressed satisfaction with his condition in Persepolis FC and the enthusiasm of its fans, saying the team is one of the greatest Asian football clubs with lots of fans.

“They say that the club has over 40 million fans. That’s why playing for the team makes you extremely popular. Just go to the streets and you will face scores of fans asking for autographs and sometimes even giving you some unique advice.”

In response to a question on the differences between playing in Europe and Iran, he said football in Iran is highly physical. “Players here differ from their European counterparts in terms of tactics but they make up for their tactical shortages by their strong physique.”

Budimir was optimistic about the championship chances of Persepolis FC in the Persian Gulf Pro League as the club leads with five points with only four games left of the season.

“Meanwhile, we are involved in Hazfi Cup and AFC Champions League. We are a large club and should remain ambitious to win all the three Persian Gulf Pro League, Hazfi and AFC Champions cups. I think we have the capacity to fulfill the ambition,” he said.

In response to a question on whether or not he advises other Croat players to play for Persepolis, he said “Yes, definitely. I think they need to have the experience. Of course, I also recommend them to remain patient.”

Iran, Allies Won’t Let Insecurity Return to Region: DM

Speaking at a meeting with Secretary General of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense Lieutenant General Mohammad Jawad Kazim in Moscow on Tuesday, Brigadier General Hatami praised the current level of security and stability in Iraq compared to previous years.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as in the past, is trying to (help) this security and tranquility to be long-standing and permanent (so that) regional nations, especially the friendly and brotherly people of Iraq, will begin to reconstruct their countries in full security and without any foreign aggression or interference,” he said.

“We will not allow insecurity to be imposed on the region by foreigners and aggressors agian…,” the Iranian defense minister stressed.

The Iraqi top general, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Islamic Republic for supporting the Arab country against terrorist groups and said, thank God, the two nations managed to counter the massive attacks by the terrorists and prevent them from reaching their goals.

Brigadier General Hatami has traveled to Russia to attend the eighth Moscow Conference on International Security at the official invitation of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has organized the annual conference in Moscow on April 23-25, 2019, according to its official website.

The conference agenda encompasses the problems of utmost significance in terms of shaping views on international security.

Separate plenary sessions offer space to exchange views on modern military challenges and threats, including the improvement of the arms control system.

Negotiation with US Possible If Washington Repents: Rouhani

rouhani

Speaking at a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, Rouhani said, “We have always been ready for negotiations and diplomacy as we were ready for war, defence and resistance.”

Some people think the United States is ready to negotiate and it is Iran that refuses; but that is not the case at all, and the United States is by no means ready to negotiate, Rouhani said.

“In such situation it is not logical to talk about negotiation. We must first make the US repent. We have no other solution.”

“Today, there is no way for the great nation of Iran except standing against the aggressor, so we must force this aggressor understand that the path they have chosen is wrong,” he added.

Referring to the US’ hostile action to end waivers on Iran’s oil sanctions, he said, “This is the new American propaganda to put the Iranian nation under pressure.”

“The Americans initiated this move in January 2017 and began their serious work as of May last year, and every day launched an unlawful act against the Iranians to pressure the people,” stated Rouhani.

So far, the US measures have not been successful at the international, regional, political and propagandist levels, and they will not achieve their goals in the economic arena as well, he added.

“Though they have created problems for our people, and their every wrong move brings more pressure on the Iranians, our nation knows well that at the moment there is no way but resistance.”

Rouhani reiterated that US has failed in its anti-Iran plots over past 40 years and will fail again.

The US said in a statement on Monday that buyers of the Iranian oil must stop purchases by May 1 or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers — Turkey, China, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan — to continue importing limited volumes.

“The United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates … along with our friends and allies, are committed to ensuring that global oil markets remain adequately supplied,” the White House statement said.

In his Wednesday remarks, Rouhani also addressed Saudi Arabia and the UAE, reminding them that they owe their survival to Iran.

If it wasn’t for Iran’s initiative during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, neither Saudi Arabia nor the UAE would exist today.

The president said there is a very good relationship with the neighbouring countries but Saudi Arabia and the UAE must realise that they owe their existence and survival to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran to Export as Much Oil as It Desires: Leader

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

“Their efforts will get nowhere,” said the Leader in a meeting with a group of workers in Tehran on Wednesday.

“We can export oil as much as we need to and as much as we wish,” he said.

“They believe they have blocked our path, but the active Iranian nation and vigilant officials will unblock any deadlock if they try to,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.

The Leader said this animosity will not go unanswered and they will receive a response for their enmity.

“The Iranian nation is not one which would remain silent in the face of their hostility,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Leader underlined, “The less we depend on this form of oil sales, the more appreciative we will be, and this would be better for us,” he said.

The Leader’s comments came after the US said in a statement on Monday that buyers of Iranian oil must stop purchases by May 1 or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers — Turkey, China, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan — to continue importing limited volumes.

“The United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates … along with our friends and allies, are committed to ensuring that global oil markets remain adequately supplied,” the White House statement said, adding, “We have agreed to take timely action to assure that global demand is met as all Iranian oil is removed from the market.”

Following the move, Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh slammed the US and its allies for using oil as a political “weapon” to put more economic pressure on the Islamic Republic, emphasizing, however, that Washington will never be able to achieve its “dream” of cutting Tehran’s oil exports to “zero.”

Iran to Launch World’s First Curved Glass Suspension Bridge

Director General of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department of Ardabil, Nader Fallahi, said the bridge will be launched in the city of Hir during President Rouhani’s visit to the province.

“This bridge has been developed by native engineers, and can boost tourism industry in this region,” underlined Fallahi.

He said “our objective to launch tourism projects in the province is to enable tourists from all over the world, especially domestic tourists, to use these facilities and select Ardabil as their first destination.”

Iran is making attempts to welcome more international visitors. The Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organisation earlier declared the country seeks to attract 20 million tourists by 2025, and earn $30 billion annually from the industry.

Iran Slams US’ Silence over Saudi Execution of 37 Men in One Day

“After a wink at the dismembering of a journalist, not a whisper from the Trump administration when Saudi Arabia beheads 37 men in one day—even crucifying one two days after Easter. Membership in the #B_team —Bolton, Bin Salman, Bin Zayed & “Bibi”— gives immunity for any crime,” Zarif said in a message posted on his Twitter on Wednesday.

It came after the Saudi regime executed 37 people in a single day “in connection with terrorism crimes,” as a crackdown led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman against pro-democracy campaigners, human rights activists and intellectuals widens in the kingdom.

Amnesty International strongly condemned the execution saying it marks an alarming escalation in Saudi Arabia’s use of the death penalty.

“Today’s mass execution is a chilling demonstration of the Saudi Arabian authorities callous disregard for human life. It is also yet another gruesome indication of how the death penalty is being used as a political tool to crush dissent from within the country’s Shiite minority,” said Lynn Maalouf, Middle East Research Director at Amnesty International.

Tuesday’s mass execution was Saudi Arabia’s largest in the past three years. In January 2016, Saudi authorities executed Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, who was an outspoken critic of the Riyadh regime, along with 46 other men on terrorism charges. Nimr had been arrested in Qatif, Eastern Province, in 2012.

Zarif Says Iran’s Military to Decide on Closing Strait of Hormuz

In this picture released by the Fars news agency on Feb. 25, 2015, IRGC speedboats assault a replica of a US aircraft carrier during large-scale naval drills near the entrance of the Persian Gulf (Photo by Fars News Agency)

His remarks came upon his arrival in New York where he is going to attend a UN General Assembly meeting on multilateralism and peace.

“We have said that Iran is protecting its interests, and one of which is to protect stability in the region. Stability in the region should be for everyone, economic prosperity must be for everyone, the ultimate advantage of Iran is to maintain regional stability for all,” he told reporters early Wednesday.

Zarif made the comments a few days after IRGC Navy Commander Admiral Alireza Tangsiri threatened that Iran will close the strategic Strait of Hormuz if it is barred from exporting its oil.

“If we are banned from using it, we will close it,” he said.

The US administration had granted waivers for its oil sanctions on Iran to eight importers when it reinstated sanctions on Iran after Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear agreement. The US claimed that the waivers were granted in part to give those countries more time to find alternate energy sources.

Washington on Monday announced it would stop issuing waivers to eight countries importing oil from Iran, as part of measures to exert pressure on Iran.

“We’re going to zero. We’re going to zero across the board,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters. “There are no (oil) waivers that extend beyond that period, full stop,” he said.

In reaction, Zarif said on Wednesday the behaviour of the United States is even worse than bandits.

The top Iranian diplomat stressed the US is in no position to grant or cancel waivers to countries buying oil from Iran.

He went on to say that Washington violates the UN Security Council resolutions and threatens other countries to follow its lead or face punishment adding that Washington’s policy in the Middle East has led to both regional and global instability.

Zarif said the Trump administration’s officials are “pawns in Netanyahu’s game”, warning the US officials against the consequences of the “extremely dangerous” Israeli game they are playing.

“With the US, with the standing of the US in the world, it seems that President Trump and the current people in the White House concern and consider more importantly the interests of Israel than those of the US,” he told reporters late Tuesday.

“[They] have become in fact pawns in a very dangerous Israeli game, in fact Netanyahu’s game in our region. And this is extremely unfortunate and extremely dangerous,” he reiterated.

Regarding Iran’s return to negotiation table, FM Zarif said Iran has never left the table, and it is Washington which should remedy its mistake of withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal if it seeks to return to negotiations with Tehran.

“They need to reassess their policies and return to a normal behaviour in the international scene. The US is currently an outlaw state that has violated almost any agreement that it had agreed,” Zarif pointed out.

“The US has not shown that it’s a credible negotiating partner; it has shown its contempt for international law and its own agreements and decisions in the past.”

Zarif’s comments come as US President Donald Trump is implementing what he calls “maximum pressure” against the Islamic Republic in a bid to what he calls “changing Iran’s behaviour”.
