Number of Prisoners in Iran Less than 200,000 for First Time in Decade

Number of Prisoners in Iran Less than 200,000 for First Time in Decade

In a statement on Tuesday, the organization rejected some media reports saying that the number of people behind bar in Iran has been growing over the past years.

“We are honoured to announce that in line with the measures adopted by the Iranian judiciary, the organization has managed to decrease the number of prisoners in Iran,” the statement said

According to the statement, a brief comparison between the number of prisoners in Iran this year and in previous years reveals that the number has plummeted to lower than 200 thousand which is unprecedented over the past decade.

“It goes without saying this is mainly due to hard efforts made by the judiciary system as well as the guidelines given by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution,” the statement concluded.

Based on a February order by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, 22,700 inmates were released from prison across the country and the prison sentences of 13,400 other convicts were commuted.

Of those released under the clemency, 606 were women, an official said.

The clemency was granted on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of victory of the Islamic Revolution.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

FIVB Apologizes to Iran over Mistreatment in Chicago

The Iranian national team arrived in Chicago after a 30-hour flight but was held for four hours at the airport, where its members were interrogated and asked silly questions.

“On behalf of the FIVB and entire volleyball family, I would like to apologize to Iran volleyball and we are really ashamed of what has happened in Chicago airport,” FIVB Chief Ary Graça wrote in a letter to Iran’s Volleyball Federation after the latter filed a complaint with it over the incident.

Graca also added the FIVB will do whatever in its power to ensure that the Iranian delegation would have a smooth entry procedure.

“We were shocked to find out what happened. I can assure you that the world federation will find a way to prevent ‘such an incident’ in the future. We wish the Iranian team success in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League,” Graça added.

Iranian Volleyball team has been drawn with Brazil and Poland in Pool B and hosts the US are pitted against Russia and France in Pool A.

The Iranian team, looking for its first VNL medal, will start the competition with a match against powerhouse Poland on July 11. It will also meet Brazil on July 12.

‘MKO Closely Working with US Intelligence against Iran’

“The MKO, which is responsible for the killing of at least 12,000 Iranian civilians and many Iraqi citizens, as well as a number of other nationalities, continues to receive funds from certain countries in the region while enjoying the support of certain States, including in Europe,” Takht-Ravanchi said Tuesday night.

He made the remarks in an address to the United Nations Security Council meeting on “Threats to international peace and security, linkages between international terrorism and organized crime”.

After being delisted as a terrorist group by the US, he added, the MKO is now active in this country and its members are closely cooperating with the US intelligence community for disruptive and destructive plots and plans against Iran.”

What follows is the full text of his statements:

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

Mr President,

I thank you for organizing this meeting. My thanks also go to the Executive Directors of the UNODC and the CTED for their input.

As global concerns, both international terrorism and transnational organized crimes require global response and the United Nations has a decisive role to play in regard to both cases. While the Security Council should continue its role on international terrorism, issues related to transnational organized crimes must be dealt with only by the General Assembly.

Terrorist and criminal groups have different motives and use different methods. However, the impacts of their activities are very similar; both are extremely disruptive and exceedingly destructive.

Iran is the victim of the activities of both terrorist groups and transnational criminals. At the same time, we are at the forefront of combating both menaces.

In the past four decades, 17,161 Iranian citizens, including almost 200 high-ranking political figures, among them one President, one Prime Minister, one Judiciary Chief, one Deputy Chief of Armed Forces and 27 MPs, as well as four nuclear scientists, have been martyred by foreign-backed terrorist groups.

The MKO, which is responsible for the killing of at least 12,000 Iranian civilians and many Iraqi citizens, as well as a number of other nationalities, continues to receive funds from certain countries in the region while enjoying the support of certain States including in Europe.

Moreover, after being delisted as a terrorist group by the US, MKO is now active in this country and its members are closely cooperating with the US intelligence community for disruptive and destructive plots and plans against Iran.

Cognizant of the serious threat posed by terrorist groups in our region, Iran has assisted Iraq and Syria, upon their request, in combating the most dangerous terrorist groups.

In our neighborhood, terrorist groups and organized criminals are involved mostly in trafficking of drugs and, in certain cases, of arms and cultural properties in order to finance their activities.

Therefore, along with terrorist groups, we have also engaged seriously in countering organized criminals, mainly those involved in drug trafficking.

As a result, in the past 40 years, 3,815 of our law enforcement forces have lost their lives and over 12,000 others have been wounded.

In the past three decades, Iran has seized approximately 11,000 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

In 2018 alone, our law enforcement forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Our outstanding activities in combating drug traffickers have always been acknowledged at the global level.

For instance, according to the “World Drug Report 2019” of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2017, Iran had seized “the largest quantity of opiates … accounting for 39 per cent of the global total”.

Likewise, during the same period, the largest quantities of opium as well as the second largest quantities of morphine and heroin were also seized by Iran.

We are determined to continue our efforts in combating terrorists and drug traffickers. However, to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of our efforts, the international community must assist Iran, of course without precondition, discrimination or politicization.

I shall also refer to the detrimental effects of unilateral sanctions in undermining our efforts to counter terrorism and organized crimes.

Countries imposing such unlawful sanctions have to be reminded that their sanction policy seriously weakens the effectiveness of counter-narcotic efforts of transit countries.

Ultimately, our success in countering these menaces is dependent largely on our genuine political will, comprehensive approach and non-discriminatory cooperation and assistance.

I thank you, Mr President.

Iranian, Russian Diplomats Hold Talks on Syria, Yemen

A delegation, consisting of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, visited Iran on Tuesday.

The Russian team held a meeting with Ali Asghar Khaji, Iranian Foreign Minister’s Senior Aide for Special Political Affairs and also Iran’s senior negotiator in the talks on Syrian and Yemeni affairs.

In the three-hour-long meeting, the two sides discussed the latest developments in Syria, including the formation of a constitutional committee and a task force on the exchange of detainees and abductees in the Arab country.

The Iranian and Russian teams also exchanged views on the next meeting of the “Astana Process”, due to be held in Kazakhstan’s capital of Nur-Sultan on August 1 and 2, as well as the next summit of the guarantor states of the Astana Process.

Moreover, Khaji and Vershinin held consultations on the situation in Yemen, with both emphasizing the need to end the crisis in the war-hit nation by carrying out the Stockholm ceasefire deal.

Iran and Russia are in close contact in the process of diplomatic efforts to settle the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Terrorists Kill 3 IRGC Forces in Northwest Iran

The IRGC said in a statement that a vehicle carrying the forces of Hamzeh Sayyid al-Shohada Headquarters was attacked by the terrorists affiliated with the “global arrogance” in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan on Tuesday evening.

The troops were taking part in a mission when the terrorists attacked their vehicle at the entrance of Piranshahr, the IRGC added, naming the martyrs as Hasel Ahmadi, Sattar Pirooti, and Omid Mollazadeh.

A manhunt is in progress to capture the fugitive assailants, the statement noted.

Last week, two local forces of the IRGC were killed in an exchange of fire with a team of terrorists in the same province.

In that clash, which took place in Chaldoran region, the security forces dismantled the terrorist cell and confiscated a remarkable amount of weapons, equipment, ammunition and communication systems from terrorists.

The IRGC is in charge of border security in Iran’s northwestern and southeastern regions.

Iran Says Good Measures Adopted to Release Zakzaky

Morteza Rahimi said Iran’s embassy in Nigeria have already made arrangements with Nigerian officials and held constructive talks with various sides in the African country to pave the way for the release of Sheikh Zakzaky.

“After arrangements made with the Nigerian government, a medical team was sent to examine health conditions of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife in jail,” he said, saying that Tehran warmly welcomed the move.

“The medical team has reportedly submitted a report on his health conditions so as to be developed by his lawyers for giving to the court,” he added.

According to Rahimi, the lawyers and family members of Sheikh Zakzaky are anxiously waiting for his trial so that they can take further legal steps for his release and treatment outside the country.

“We hope the legal procedures will be over soon,” he said.

The Iranian ambassador finally thanked organizations in Iran which are seriously following up the fate of Sheikh Zakzaky.

Sheikh Zakzaky, who is in his mid-sixties, lost his left eyesight in a 2015 raid by security forces that left more than 300 of his followers and three of his sons dead.

During the raid, his wife also sustained serious wounds. Sheikh Zakzaky has been held in detention since December 2015 despite a high court ruling.

He was charged in April with murder, culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace and other accusations. He has pleaded not guilty.

No Regional Security Unless Iran’s Interests Met: Putin’s Envoy

Alexander Lavrentiev made the remarks on Tuesday in a meeting with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, in Tehran.

“As far as other parties fail to live up to their JCPOA pledges, we can’t expect Iran to remain committed unilaterally and without benefiting from its legal rights under the nuclear accord,” he said.

For his part, Shamkhani referred to the constructive and growing development of mutual ties between Iran and Russia as two friendly countries and strategic partners and said Iran praises the fair and resolute stances of Russia towards issues like the JCPOA, the US drone’s violation of Iran’s airspaces, Iran’s legal presence in Syria and the UK’s seizure of a tanker with Iranian oil.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral and regional issues.

Levrentiev is on an official visit to Iran at the direct order of the Russian president to brief Iranian officials on the latest trilateral meeting between Russian, American and Israeli security officials.

Iran FM, UN Coordinator for Lebanon Meet in Tehran

During the Tuesday talks, the two sides highlighted the sensitive and complicated situation of the region, and discussed a wide range of regional issues as well as the latest developments in Lebanon.

Iran to Take 3rd Nuclear Step in September, Zarif Warns EU

In a letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, Zarif underlined that Iran has already gone beyond the 3.67-percent level of uranium enrichment, set in the Iran nuclear deal.

Iran will live up to its JCPOA commitments only as far as the other sides particularly the US remain committed, he added.

Zarif also said if the remaining sides of the JCPOA don’t live up to their commitments within the next 60 days, Iran will take the third step of reducing its commitments as of September.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran has already increased its uranium enrichment level beyond 3.67 percent. The measure was adopted on Sunday after Iran took the second step of reducing its commitments in response to the passive approach of the remaining sides of the JCPOA.

The move has already sparked reactions from the US and the EU. The Europeans have expressed concerns over Iran’s move and called on the country to stick to its commitments.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi said the move was made in line with the JCPOA and its paragraph 36.

“We view the JCPOA as a significant document and want to preserve it but it goes without saying that our demands should be met and the commitments reduction comes due to the other sides’ failure to meet our demands,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a tweet on Sunday, Zarif said, “Iran is committed to the full implementation of the #JCPOA: as long as E3/EU implement THEIR economic commitments. So moving forward, Iran will comply with its commitments under the JCPOA in exactly the same manner as the EU/E3 have—and will—comply with theirs. Fair enough?”

After the US unilateral withdrawal from the deal back in May 2018, Iran waited for the compensatory measures of the remaining sides of the JCPOA but one year on, no tangible measures have been adopted by them so far.
