He added the new Tabriz was constructed on the old one, which was destroyed in the 1780 earthquake.

He said the then ruler of Tabriz built the new structures on the old, destroyed ones because the people of Tabriz were very attached to the city, and at the same time it was difficult to remove the debris.

“So, there is a possibility that historical items belonging to Old Tabriz will be discovered during excavations and other construction work, especially in the centre of the city,” he noted.

Speaking at his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday, Mousavi pointed to the recent remarks by some Iranian officials about scaling down the country’s nuclear undertakings and said, “We have started these countermeasures and reduction of our (commitments) under the JCPOA and announced that there is no proportionality between the duties and rights of Iran and the actions of the other parties, especially the Europeans.”

“We would announce the third step after 60 days and are still examining (the issue),” he said, adding, “If the other parties, especially the Europeans, do not fulfill their obligations, the third step of Iran will be firmer.”

“Our next step will also be in the legal framework mentioned in paragraphs 26 and 36 of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) unless some countries want to take strange actions in which case, we will take a final step,” the spokesman went on to say.

“Whenever we are convinced that the measures done (by the EU) are something that is close to our expectations and demands, these (steps) can be reversed,” Mousavi stated.

Iran on Sunday declared the second step to reduce its commitments by ramping up the level of uranium enrichment to over 3.67 percent.

President Hassan Rouhani had warned on Wednesday that the second step of reduction in Iran’s commitments would take place on Sunday, saying, “On July 7, the level of (uranium) enrichment in Iran will not be 3.67 percent anymore, as we will abandon such a commitment and increase it (enrichment) to any amount that we need.”

Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the nuclear deal.

The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation was hampered by the US policies and its eventual withdrawal from the deal.

On May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the nuclear accord.

Following the US withdrawal, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the deal.

However, the EU’s failure of ensure Iran’s economic interests forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments, including an unlimited rise in the stockpile of enriched uranium.

Last week, Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium exceeded 300 kg.

Speaking on Monday, the Iranian official announced that the country may enrich uranium at even higher levels if the Europeans fail to meet Iran’s expectations within the second 60-day deadline Iran has given them.

“20% is not needed now, but if we want we will achieve it. When we’ve put aside 3.67% enrichment we have no obstacle or problem with this action,” he said.

Kamalvandi noted that “there is the 20% option and there are options even higher than that but each in its own place.”

“Today if our country’s needs are one thing, we won’t pursue something else just to scare the other side a little more,” he said, adding that the other JCPOA parties know “it’s an upward trend”.

Iran on Sunday officially announced it is boosting the level of its uranium enrichment to a level beyond the 3.67% limit set by the JCPOA.

The decision was announced by Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Rabiei in a press conference also attended by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi and the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi.

“Today we will surpass the 3.67% limit on uranium enrichment. The purity level will be based on our need, and that will be officially realized today,” Rabiei said.

Araqchi said the second phase begins as the 60-day deadline Iran had given the other JCPOA parties is over without Iran’s demands being fulfilled.

Speaking on Monday in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, General Hatami said the UK Navy’s move “runs counter to international regulations and is a kind of maritime piracy.”

“This maritime piracy will definitely not be tolerated by the Islamic Republic,” he said, highlighting the long record of combating piracy.

Iranian supertanker Grace 1 was boarded and impounded by Gibraltar police and customs agencies, aided by a detachment of British Royal Marines, on Thursday at the US request in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Later in the day, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Britain’s ambassador to the country to express its strong protest at the move.

At the Foreign Ministry, Rob Macaire was told that the British Royal Marines’ move was tantamount to “maritime piracy”, and that the UK must immediately release the oil tanker.

Macaire has since been seen at the foreign ministry two more times, the latest case of which was on Monday morning. While leaving the Foreign Ministry, journalists asked about his presence.

In response, he said he was there “just for business”.

The earthquake hit an area near the city of Masjed Soleyman in Khuzestan at 11:30 a.m. (local time) on Monday, according to the Seismological Centre of the Institute of Geophysics of Tehran University.

The epicentre, with a depth of 17 km, was determined to be at 31.95 degrees of north latitude and 49.50 degrees of east longitude.

The location of the quake has been reported to be 19 km from Masjed Soleyman and 29 km from Qaleh-ye Khajeh, data from the seismological centre showed.

According to initial reports, a middle-aged man, frightened by the quake, has lost his life over a heart attack. 64 others have also been wounded.

The quake has been so strong that several other provinces neighbouring Khuzestan have been jolted. It has also been felt in the neighbouring country of Kuwait.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive.

The head of team said the second phase of excavations is underway in Qaleh Kord Cave of Avaj, Qazvin province; where the team found the remains of neanderthal horses.

Hamed Vahdati Nasab told IRNA that the first stage of excavations was carried out last year. An Iranian-French archaeology team is working on the second phase in the form of a joint mission; which is to continue until the end of July.

According to him, Qaleh Kord Cave of Avaj is one of the highest caves in Iran, and is about 2,100 metres above the sea level.

The cave has turned into a tourist attraction during past few years; so numerous unauthorized excavations took place there.

“The cave is very long, however the archaeologists have focused on its entrance; which is very rich in terms of cultural remnants. Most activities in the Paleolithic period took place there. We have found several thousand heads of arrows and animal remains from teeth to bones and horse skulls.”

Pointing out that the main hunt of Neanderthal people was wild horse, he said based on his studies, several different remains of such horses have been found in this cave.

The general size of these horses is about one and a half times larger than today’s ones, he added.

During the first phase of joint Iran-France archeological exploration in Qaleh Kord Cave of Avaj in Qazvin Province, over 6,000 cultural works from two boreholes were discovered.
