Hassan Rouhani said he is going to underline the issue of regional security during his upcoming speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.

“This year, we will introduce to the world a plan which underlines that the Islamic Republic of Iran can ensure security in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in cooperation with regional countries,” said the president on Sunday.

The initiative is called the Hormuz Peace Initiative – the gist of which is love and hope – with the slogan ‘The coalition of hope”, he added.

Rouhani said the initiative will envision the provision of security for the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz with cooperation among Iran and other regional countries.

He made the remarks in an address to a parade in the capital, Tehran, marking the anniversary of the start of the eight-year Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

Rouhani said security in the Persian Gulf should be provided “from within.”

So, he added, the presence of foreign forces in the region can be “problematic”, as it endangers the region as well as maritime and energy security.

President Rouhani is scheduled to travel to New York for the annual UN General Assembly meeting on Monday.

Iran’s Volleyball Team Claims Asian Title

The Iranians, who were looking to avenge their defeat to the Aussies in the group stages, came into the game at Tehran’s Azadi Sports Complex, with all guns blazing, taking the opener 25-14. The hosts went-on to take the 2nd set 25-17, and secured the title with a 25-21 win in the final set. That’s while, Team Iran had reached the final, after a dramatic 4-set-win against South Korea, while Australia made a great comeback against Japan in the other semifinal encounter.

War with Iran Would Be Endless, Zarif Warns

In an interview to the CBS News’ Face the Nation program on Saturday, Zarif said a war with Iran would not be necessarily limited to the Iranian borders.

He said that Iran would never seek to initiate a war, but warned that any one launching a war against Iran would not be the one that ends it.

The remarks, recorded in Iran’s United Nations mission in New York and set to be broadcast on Sunday, is the latest to come from Iranian officials amid an escalation in tensions in the Middle East, where the United States has sought to accuse Iran of attacks on oil installations east of Saudi Arabia on September 14.

Iran has denied any role in the attacks which have been claimed by Yemen’s ruling Houthi Ansarullah movement. The attacks seriously affected Saudi Arabia’s oil production and sent shockwaves across the global markets.

In his Saturday remarks, Zarif described as a mere gesture a US decision to reinforce troops in the Persian Gulf following the attacks in Saudi Arabia, saying such moves would not help deescalate the situation in the region.

He called on the US and allies to look for a solution to the war in Yemen, saying that would be a “helpful” solution.

In his interview to CBS’s Margaret Brennan, Zarif rejected claims that Washington was willing to launch a dialogue with Iran, saying the American visa issued for him to attend a UN General Assembly meeting came with a waiver granted by US authorities.

They wanted to remind me that I should not be here, Zarif told Brennan, making a reference to the fact that he is under American sanctions.

Earlier in the day, the top Iranian diplomat criticized Washington for its new wave of sanctions on banking and financial institutions in Iran, saying the bans, which came following attacks on Saudi Arabia, were an attempt out of desperation which sought to bar the access of ordinary Iranians to food and medicine.

“But this is dangerous and unacceptable as an attempt at blocking … the Iranian people’s access to food and medicine,” said Zarif a day after the US announced sanctions on Iran’s central bank and the country’s sovereign wealth fund.

The Iranian minister is expected to have a busy schedule in New York where he is expected to meet foreign ministers of countries signatory to a major international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program which has suffered since May last year when the US withdrew from the pact.

Reports said Zarif had held a first ministerial meeting on Saturday with Yusuf bin Alawi, the foreign minister of Oman, a country in the Persian Gulf which acted as a mediator between Iran and the US during talks that led to the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers.

Iran Holds Massive Parades to Mark Sacred Defence Week

The Army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the police, border guards, and Basij [voluntary] forces of the Islamic Republic are attending the nationwide parades.

President Hassan Rouhani spoke before the parades started in Tehran, and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani delivered a speech in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

Surface, sub-surface, and hovercraft belonging to the Iranian Army and the IRGC are parading in the Persian Gulf. Above them will be flying Army fighter jets and helicopters and IRGC aircraft. Iran’s first domestic fighter jet Kowsar will also be in flight.

200 frigates and speedboats of the IRGC and the Army Navy are also participating in the parades.

What follows are photos of the parades retrieved from various news agencies:

Enemy Won’t Dare Attack Iran: President Rouhani

Hassan Rouhani further said Iran will not succumb to the enemy, will defend itself and will not allow others to encroach upon its frontiers.

“The United States and the Israeli regime want to see discord among peoples in the Middle East region,” said the president at a parade of Armed Forces in the Iranian Capital, Tehran, marking the anniversary of the start of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

“Hegemonic powers led by the United States have always pursued the objective of creating insecurity, misery and problems, and looting the interests of the regional countries,” he said.

He said Iran attaches great significance to security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

“We announce to the world that the presence of foreign forces is problematic for international waterways as well as shipping, oil and energy security,” he said.

“However, he noted, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s path is one of unity and coordination with regional countries,” said President Rouhani.

“We extend a hand of friendship to all our neighbours and forgive their past mistakes,” President Rouhani said.

He noted enemies made numerous efforts in the years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran to create insecurity, hatch plots to disintegrate the country, and assassinate top Iranian officials.

“Enemies of the Revolution and the Iranian nation even didn’t settle for these acts, and conspired to undermine our security and defence foundations,” he added.

“The enemies’ first plot was to dissolve the Army, which was promoted by … mercenaries,” he said.

He then touched upon the 8-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s, which, he said, had Washington’s green light. He said the Iranian nation and military stood up to aggressors through unity and solidarity.

He further touched upon accusations levelled by the enemies against Iran.

“[The lies of] Those who want to attribute regional incidents to the Islamic Republic of Iran will be unmasked like all of their other lies which were exposed,” he said.

“If they are really after peace and security, they should not send so much dangerous weapons to the region and not turn our region into an arms depot and [a place for] an arms race, and if they really want security for this region they should distance themselves from the region because the presence of all of them has amounted to hardship and disaster for the region,” said the president.

FM Zarif Sends Message to World Peace Day Event

What follows is the full text of the message:

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful;

Dear friends;

I’d like to pay tribute to the martyrs and veterans on the occasion of the Sacred Defense Week. I’m afraid that I could not join you because of taking part in the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.

I express gratitude to Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO Mr. Ayoubi, Director of the Museum of Islamic Revolution and Holy Defense Mr. Jafari, and all others for convening this valued event.

Honoring and respecting the concept of peace is a valuable and important measure in materialization of this concept in the global arena. Peace and security have been among the human being’s main wishes and requests throughout history, regardless of the time period, the location, or the type of society. The need for peace and calm derives from the pure nature of humans. The Almighty God has created human as a peace-loving being. There is no doubt that peace is a sacred term which has been always sought by the humanity and is considered as a common global cause. The truth is that the purpose of peace is not only the lack of wars, but it is aimed at the sense of justice, equality and security. In this concept, peace is regarded as a virtue. The obstacle to the materialization of peace and calmness is the estrangement of humans from the divine teachings, including fraternity, equality, peaceful co-existence, sincerity, justice-seeking, fairness and patience. The divine religions and monotheistic faiths have referred to peace and justice as an essential part of the criteria for human life, as the divine prophets have called on humans to pursue them. The human being’s instinct and innate wisdom prefers and favors the goodness, norms and values. “And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path,” God says in Quran.

Many wars throughout human history have broken out because of excessive demands and expansionist ideas, although they have been usually alleged to ensure peace and security or to protect the interests of one of the warring sides. In fact, a number of sides have been seeking their security by creating insecurity for the other side or parties. Based on this notion, we saw the formation of various political and military blocks in the international arena in the past, which has emerged as unilateralism today.

Along with the social and political developments in the human life, particularly the formation of nation states, the international community’s main concern has been the formation of collective mechanisms to maintain peace and security, to prevent the outbreak of wars, and to resolve the conflicts peacefully. The bitter experiences and heavy costs of the First World War made the world leaders to establish the League of Nations to achieve peace. After that arrangement proved ineffective and following the outbreak of World War II, the United Nations was founded, one of whose main goals is to protect international peace and security. The UN Charter has also set out regulations to that end.

The main responsibility to ensure this lies with the Security Council. In addition to the Security Council, the other UN bodies and affiliated specialized agencies have been seriously concerned about this issue as well. The UNESCO has also a significant role in the fortification and promotion of culture of peace. Despite the United Nations’ considerable efforts and activities and a series of achievements in this regard, we have sadly witnessed many internecine wars and unresolved conflicts. This has various reasons, such as the instrumental use of the UN mechanisms, particularly the UN Security Council, by a number of countries, the lack of commitment from certain powers and the UN member states to the contents of the UN Charter, and the lack of serious action on a reform of the UN structure. On the other hand, the bitter truth is that the culture of peace and rule of law has not been institutionalized within the international community.

Still, a series of countries believe they have a right to impose their own ideas and political views because they have power. Their meddlesome, monopolist, and unilateralist policy in the international relations is the root cause of the bulk of past wars and conflicts as well as the existing challenges.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been a target of such hostile and unilateralist policy for around four decades. The Security Council’s negative performance during the Iraqi imposed war against Iran and after the Saddam regime’s crimes against people of Iran — such as the use of chemical weapons — was a blatant example of the Security Council’s poor performance in relation to international peace and security.

Another example of the abuse of the Security Council against the Islamic Republic of Iran was the council’s imposition of sanctions on Iran on baseless nuclear allegations.

Such situation was a result of the political approach of some of the Security Council’s permanent members to the subjects on the agenda. The US’ withdrawal from the JCPOA in spite of its commitments, including under the Security Council Resolution 2231, was another example of the political treatment of the Security Council. The US’ lack of commitment to the international treaties and the bilateral agreements with the other countries as well as the adoption of policy of unilateralism are among the major factors threatening the international peace and security.

The unresolved issue of Palestine after more than seven decades of occupation, killing and depriving a nation of its basic rights, displacing the people, and the current dire conditions in Yemen are glaring examples of brazen injustice in the international arena.

Based on its religious and national teachings, the Islamic Republic of Iran has always tried to strengthen regional and international peace and security.

The verification of Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA commitments confirms the reality. Iran’s key and leading role in the fight against terrorism, particularly in the war against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, are the other instances of the measures we have taken to combat the threats against peace and security. The Islamic Republic of Iran has always tried to fulfill the UN Charter’s goals, and has worked in active and constructive cooperation and interaction with the UN member states and various bodies to that end. By realizing the threats that extremism and violence pose to the international peace and security, the president of Iran proposed the idea of World Against Violence and Extremism at the UN General Assembly in 2013, which received a welcome from the UN members.

We believe that the most effectual way to restore and preserve peace and calm is for the humans to return to their pure nature and regulate their relations on the basis of genuine human and religious values and criteria. Promotion of the thoughts and first-hand views of the elites, the intelligentsia, and the clerics would have a great role in strengthening the culture of peace and friendship among the nations and countries.

The concept of peace has always had a special place in the Persian literature. Renowned Iranian poet Rumi has paid a great deal of attention of to the concept of peace. “The wars of mankind are like children’s fights; all meaningless, pithless, and contemptible,” says Rumi in the first book of the Masnavi.

Let’s hope for a world full of peace, calmness, and materialization of justice and rapport among the whole nations and countries.
Thank you.

Iran Strongly Rejects Saudi Claims about Aramco Attacks

Iran Says What IAEA Wants to Access “Not A Site”

“It is a source of regret that the Saudi government, under the delusion that Iran is its enemy, escapes from the existing realities and facts, and always raises Iran’s name in a bid to pin the blame on others for its own failures,” Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said Saturday.

He advised the Saudi government to stop levelling groundless accusations against others, and immediately end the devastating war on Yemen, which has resulted in nothing but the slaughter of innocent people and the destruction of the country.

Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement and their allies in the Yemeni army deployed as many as 10 drones to bomb Abqaiq and Khurais oil facilities run by the Saudi state-owned oil company before dawn last Saturday.

The unprecedented attack knocked out more than half of Saudi crude output, or 5% of global supply, prompting Saudi and US officials to claim without any evidence that it probably originated from Iraq or Iran.

The US was quick to blame Iran for the brazen attacks, claiming there was no evidence the drones had originated from Yemen.
