Joint Drills Show Iran Ready for Regional Security Cooperation: FM

Mohammad Javad Zarif said the war games show Iran stands ready to work with other countries to ensure security and free shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The drills also indicate that [two] important countries (Russia and China) do not support tension-provoking policies in the region,” Zarif told reporters upon arrival in the Russian capital, Moscow.

Zarif is in Moscow to sit down with his Russian opposite number as part of “regular consultations” between the two states.

“We have strategic relations with Russia, and we need to have consultations on different regional and international issues as well as the latest situation of the region and the world,” he said while elaborating on the objectives of his trip.

“This is my 28th trip to Russia in the past six and a half years, which shows close relations between the two countries,” he added.

“Tomorrow (Monday, Dec. 30, 2019) there will be an opportunity to hold detailed discussions with the [Russian] Foreign Minister [Sergey Lavrov] on all these issues,” the top diplomat added.

During his trip, Zarif is accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi and Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi.

Iran to Host Conference on ‘HOPE’ Initiative

The Tehran Dialogue Forum, due to held in the capital on Monday and Tuesday, January 6 and 7, will discuss the HOPE initiative as well as the latest developments in the Persian Gulf.

The main sessions of this forum include public meetings and specialized round-table talks on Tuesday, January 7 from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm (local time).

The international event will be attended by domestic political officials, senior officials from regional countries, thinkers, heads of research institutes and national and international experts.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani presented the HOPE initiative while delivering a speech at the UN General Assembly 2019 and invited all regional countries to participate in it.

“The initiative is based on the fact that all regional countries are duty-bound to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region. Together with the international community, they have common interests in maintaining freedom of navigation and energy transfer,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said about the initiative at a UN Security Council meeting on September 25.

These regional efforts are necessary to prevent war, conflict, violence, extremism, terrorism and sectarian tensions, Zarif said at the time, adding that Tehran’s proposal was aimed at enhancing solidarity, mutual understanding as well as peaceful and friendly relations between countries in the region in order to guarantee the territorial integrity and political independence of regional states.

Iraqi Base Hosting US Forces Hit by Rockets: Report

According to some Iraqi sources, four Katyusha rockets hit the Al-Taji base.

That came as US troops bombarded the positions of Kataib Hezbollah Brigades affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU). A number of PMU forces were killed in the attack.

The Pentagon issued a statement, reaffirming that it had targeted the positions of Hezbollah Brigades of the PMU. In the statement, the State Department claimed the attack was in response to repeated strikes on Iraqi bases hosting coalition troops.

Based on the statement, a total of five targets, including three positions of Kataib Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and two positions in Syria were hit.

Hashd al-Shaabi Releases Details of US Attack on Bases in Iraq

Hours after the US airstrike on Kataib Hezbollah positions on Sunday night, the PMU senior director, Jawad Kazem al-Rabi’ei, said dozens of forces have been killed and injured in the attack.

“Today (Sunday), the commander of Al-Jazeera operations unit and the 45th and 46th Hashd al-Shaabi brigades were targeted in US drone strikes,” he said.

The airstrikes took place in the Al-Mazra’a area, inside the Iraqi territory near the border with Syria, Rabi’ei added.

“The rescue operations are underway and the injured and martyrs are being relocated in cooperation with relief teams from al-Qa’im town,” the commander noted.

A source said that five people have been killed in the American air raid, including a commander of Hashd al-Shaabi and two of his deputies, the deputy commander of the 45th Brigade, and a photographer.

Several unidentified UAVs targeted the Kataib Hezbollah’s bases on Sunday night near the border town of Qa’im in Iraq’s Al Anbar Governorate.

The US Department of Defence also issued a statement shortly after the attack, confirming its military had targeted Hashd al-Shaabi positions near Iraq’s al-Qa’im city.

It came after a barrage of 30 or more rockets was fired on Friday at the K1 Iraqi military base in Kirkuk, an oil-rich region north of Baghdad, killing a US civilian contractor and wounding four US service members as well as Iraqi security forces, according to the Pentagon.

Since late October, several mortar and rocket attacks have targeted the American positions in Iraq, to where the US has deployed 5,200 troops.

Military sources say some have been killed and dozens wounded in the western Iraqi base.

Pentagon has released a statement claiming that the attacks targeted facilities including weapon depot and command and control centres.

“In response to repeated Kataib Hezbollah attacks on Iraqi bases that host Operation Inherent Resolve coalition forces, US forces have conducted precision defensive strikes that will degrade Kataib Hezbollah’s ability to conduct future attacks,”

Pentagon Spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said in the statement.

A US official said on Friday the Washington was looking into the possible involvement of Kataib Hezbollah in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that killed a US civilian contractor and injured some service members and Iraqi staff.

Iraqi sources say Washington has put all its military bases across the country on high alert in the wake of its military attacks on PMU positions.

Kataib Hezbollah’s leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis has been designated a terrorist by Washington. His group has bases in Syria as well.

Iran-Russia-China Naval Drills Wrap Up in Oman Sea

The preplanned scenario consisted of receiving distress calls from two merchant ships attacked by pirates while heading from Persian Gulf to international waters.

It also included identification of and search for the operation zone by an Iranian SH helicopter, and the Iranian Frigate Alborz dividing the warships deployed in the operation zone into three groups composed of Iranian, Russian and Chinese units.

Firefighting operations were also carried out during the rescue mission.

At the end of the operation, one of the rescued ships was tugged for drilling purposes by a Russian tugboat.

Iranian, Russian and Chinese joint naval drills began on 27 December in the north of Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman amid increasing tensions between Iran and the US, which escalated following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Education Minister Makes Surprise Visit to Christian School in Tehran

Iran Develops Homegrown Micromanipulator for Infertility Treatment

Precise intracellular injections are nowadays widely used in techniques for infertility diagnosis and treatment.

Intracellular injection or taking cytoplasmic samples require special devices capable of controlling different scales of movement speed and accuracy. Such apparatus can convert the movements of an operator into high precision movements with certain degrees of freedom, resulting in absolute accuracy at the micrometer scale. The cell Injection and manipulation devices are used for precise operations on a sample under a microscope.

Micromanipulators are mainly employed in intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a technique performed as an additional part of an IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment cycle where a single sperm is injected into each egg to assist fertilization.

Micromanipulators are also utilized in microbiology, research on human, animal and plant cells, stem cell research, genetics studies and breeding programs, optical device industry, micro-lens arrays, optical tweezers, micro-assembly technologies, nanotechnology, and microelectronics.

The foreign micromanipulators are sold at a cost of between $40,000 and $60,000. Importing the device from abroad would also incur an additional cost, as much as 20 to 50 percent of price of the machine. Moreover, the after-sales service would incur even more expenses on the medical centres.

Since the micromanipulators used in Iran have been imported from foreign countries, only the research and medical centres with great financial capabilities were the main customers of such sophisticated device.

In order to address the problem, Iran Biotech Fund –a fund established under the auspices of the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science and Technology- made an investment in a program to design and manufacture a homegrown micromanipulator with the purpose of supporting the local industries.

Iran Biotech Fund offered expert advices about the business fields and also financed part of the program during a 2-year plan to design and manufacture the homegrown device.

Finally, the Iranian researchers at the Sharif University of Technology managed to manufacture a micromanipulator which is half the price of the foreign device.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review – 2019

The Iranian research team has gained the technical know-how and the necessary practical experience to develop the key technologies used in micromanipulators, such as hyper-accurate movement technology, piezoelectricity, and servo control. Accordingly, the indigenous production of such device in Iran would face no technical risk.

At present, only Germany, the UK, Japan and the US have the technical know-how to produce micromanipulators.
