Iran’s Security Council to Hold Emergency Meeting on Soleimani’s Assassination

The SNSC spokesman Keyvan Khosravi said Friday the meeting will be held later in the day following the criminal move by the US to assassinate General Soleimani.

Major General Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), were killed in US airstrikes in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

The IRGC announced in a statement on Friday morning that Major General Soleimani and al-Muhandis were martyred in the attack carried out by US helicopters.

The Iraqi pro-government group also confirmed the incident.

“The deputy head of the Hashed, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and head of the Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, were killed in a US strike that targeted their car on the Baghdad International Airport road,” the statement said on Friday.

US to Be Held Accountable for Assassination of Gen. Soleimani: Zarif

In his statement, Zarif offered condolences and congratulations to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the country’s Armed Forces especially the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the great nation of Iran and his dignified family as well as the Islamic resistance forces over the great tragedy.
“The malice and stupidity of American terrorist forces who assassinated General Soleimani, a hero martyr and a commander of fight against terrorism and extremism, will undoubtedly further strengthen the tree of resistance in the region and the world,” Zarif said in the statement.

“The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran will tap into all its political, legal, and international capacities to implement the decisions made by the Supreme National Security Council in order to hold the criminal and terrorist regime of the US accountable for this blatant crime,” he added.

Zarif’s statement started with an Ayah from Surah al-Ahzab of the Holy Quran, which reads, “Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration.”

Zarif earlier tweeted that “the US’ act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani— THE most effective force fighting Daesh (ISIS), Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al—is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation.”

“The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism,” Zarif warned.

In a statement, the IRGC announced that the top general had been martyred in a strike by American choppers near Baghdad International Airport.

Deputy head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was also martyred in the attack.

According to the PMU, five other members of the group were killed in the strike, as well.

Pentagon has also announced that US President Donald Trump ordered the killing of General Soleimani. He is to hold a press conference shortly.

Iran Exports $146m Worth of Handicrafts in 8 Months

The remarks were made by Pouya Mahmoudian, the Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts on the margins of her visit to Khorashad Village in South Khorasan province.

Khorashad is the village that was visited by representatives of the World Crafts Council in November 2018, who are considering registering the town’s fabric-weaving art known as Tobafi, one of the major handicraft skills and traditional arts of South Khorasan.

The art has been revived thanks to the great efforts made, and its products are offered on international markets.

The Tobafi art, as the only handicraft skill in the province, has been nominated to receive the originality seal from the country’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism.

In order to weave fabric with the traditional Tobafi method, they first provide raw materials such as cotton, silk or wool. Then they spin them. Afterwards, they boil the spun thread and use flour to make the thread thicker. Then they use the fabric and the fabric-weaving machine to make the final product.

In her remarks in Khorashad, Mahmoudian further referred to the national registration of the nearby city of Khusf as the country’s centre of Malleh, a type of brown cotton.

“If the infrastructure is provided, we will work towards the global registration of Khusf as the town of Malleh. The global registration of an area would mean the presence of tourism, more marketing and generating profit and income.”

She further expressed regret that the country’s precious gemstones are being exported as raw material. “Our wish is to achieve a point where through processing precious gemstones and stopping the sale of raw precious and semi-precious gemstones, we will enjoy surplus value in this field,” she further stated.

There will be collaboration between the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Ministry and the Ministry of Industry with the aim of preventing the sale of raw precious and semi-precious stones in the near future, she announced.

Truck Radial Tire Plant Opened in Iran’s Ardabil

In a ceremony in Iran’s northwestern city of Ardabil on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani inaugurated an assembly line for manufacturing radial tires for trucks, as the second phase of a project on production of radial tires in Artaville industrial complex.

In comments at the event, President Rouhani praised the Iranian entrepreneurs for making great strides in making the country self-sufficient, noting that the inauguration of the factory producing tires for heavy vehicles marks another step forward in the path to development.

The plant which has received $40 million and 6,000 billion rials in financing would manufacture 25,000 tonnes of products (300,000 truck tires) annually, satisfying 30 percent of the country’s domestic demand.

The factory has been established in an area of 45,000 square meters, and has directly provided employment for 400 people.

Foreign Ministry Condemns FATF’s Blacklisting of Iran

In comments made on the sidelines of a religious course in Tehran on Tuesday, Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani said the Palermo Convention (the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, known as UNTOC) and the CFT treaty are extremely dangerous to national security.

Highlighting the growing suspicion about the US and its followers who have joined the FATF, the Iranian official said those hostile states are “dangerous and corrupt” countries.

The JCPOA proved how untrustworthy they are, the cleric noted, warning that the CFT is even worse than the nuclear deal.

“I personally believe that both the Palermo (convention) and the CFT (treaty) pose great security threats. The threat of the CFT to the (national) security is even greater. Do you think that I care about the threats from the FATF which says every time that this would be your (Iran’s) last deadline?” the chairman added.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei sounded the same warning on Wednesday, saying a series of attempts are underway to pressurize the Expediency Council into ratifying the standards set by the FATF.

He also denounced the “suspicious” move by the Financial Action Task Force in urging Iran to addresses two certain remaining items, among 30 outstanding items, for implementing the anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) reforms.

“Is it not an act of interference in Iran’s internal issues from a foreign group? Is it not an example of interference when the FATF council steps in and supports one of the parties engaged in the discussions about the FATF?” Rezaei asked.

“FATF has many angles, and we believe it is inadvisable to talk about them for now,” secretary of the Expediency Council added.

In October 2019, the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force gave Iran a final deadline of February 2020 to tighten its rules against money laundering in compliance with the global watchdog’s financial standards.

To fulfill FATF requirements, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s administration has proposed four bills to the parliament for approval, two of which are still undecided, including the Palermo Convention.

At the Foreign Ministry, the Swiss envoy received the Islamic Republic’s strong protest over the hawkish comments made by American officials in violation of the United Nations charter.

In a meeting with the Swiss charge d’affaires on Wednesday, Mohsen Baharvand, an assistant to Iran’s foreign minister, urged Switzerland to convey Iran’s protest to the US, and also tell them that Iraq is an independent country with freedom-seeking, independence-seeking, and honourable people.

“The US army has martyred at least 25 young members of the Iraqi nation and wounded scores of others without providing any evidence for their culpability,” Baharvand said.

“The Iraqi people would naturally show reaction to a country that has occupied their territory and is killing their youths. Americans have even bombed two areas in Syria at the same time. That shows they are seeking to achieve other goals, and are just looking for pretexts,” he added.

Baharvand said the American officials had better stop pinning the blame on others and levelling groundless accusations against the Islamic Republic.

The Swiss envoy was also told that Iran is not a hawkish country, but its hands are not tied when it comes to countering any threat and unwise move.

In that case, it will defend itself with full force.

“Instead of raising baseless accusations against others, the US government must learn how to speak to other nations and stop occupation,” the Swiss charge d’affaires was told.

Angered by US air raids that killed over two dozen fighters from Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) on Sunday, hundreds of protesters stormed its embassy compound in the high-security Green Zone on Tuesday, setting fires and chanting: “Death to America!” They also demanded the removal of American troops from Iraq.

Reacting to the attack, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday held Iran “fully responsible” for the incident on Twitter and added that the protesters “will be held fully responsible.”

In a separate statement, Trump later also warned that Tehran would “pay a very big price” after the attack.
