Iran Warns Baku It Won’t Tolerate Terrorists’ Presence Near Its Borders

Iran Warns Baku It Won’t Tolerate Terrorists’ Presence Near Its Borders

Speaking in a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, President Hassan Rouhani underlined Iran has already fought terrorists in its neighbouring countries to keep them away from its borders.

“Over years, we have fought terrorists and forced them away from our borders, people like martyr Soleimani were on the ground and fought them, to kill terrorists right there and then keep them from getting close to our frontiers,” he said.

“We fought terrorists in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq with the help of their people. It is unacceptable if certain people want to take terrorists from Syria and other places to areas near the Iranian borders under different pretexts, and we have straightforwardly informed officials in both the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia of our position in that regard,” he added.

President Rouhani said every effort should be made to prevent the Azeri-Armenian conflict from growing into a regional war. He warned third parties against fueling the flames of the war. President Rouhani further added Iran’s border security must be preserved amid tensions in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

He expressed regret over the ongoing war between Armenia and the Azerbaijan Republic, calling for an end to the fighting.

He also underlined the need to respect the Azerbaijan Republic’s territorial integrity.

Rouhani Urges Baku Not to Let Terrorists Take Advantage of Karabakh Conflict
An image grab taken from a video made available on the official website of the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry on Sept. 28, 2020, allegedly shows Azeri artillery strike toward the positions of Armenian separatists in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

In a telephone conversation with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday, President Rouhani expressed concern about possible interference from the foreign states in the dispute between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia that could turn the clashes into a regional war.

“Security, stability and calm in the region, particularly along the northern borders, is highly important to us,” the Iranian president added, noting that such conflict and the continuation of insecurity at the border should not prepare the ground for the activities of terrorist groups.

Iran is monitoring the regional developments after a flare-up of tensions between its two neighbors with sensitivity and concern, President Rouhani told the Azeri leader, stressing, “Peace in the region is greatly significant. However, the territorial integrity of the neighbors is also very important to us.”

Hailing the Republic of Azerbaijan as a good neighbor with which Iran shares many historical, cultural and religious interests, President Rouhani said the Islamic Republic has always adopted clear and explicit stances on the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.

The president also voiced concern about the spread of border clashes between Baku and Yerevan to the cities, saying, “I hope the war and clashes would not lead to the wars on cities, which will result in displacement of people and killing of civilians, which is greatly painful and dangerous.”

The president then called for an immediate end to the armed clashes between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, reiterating that Iran is ready for any measure to settle the disputes between Baku and Yerevan on the basis of international regulations and the recognized border between the two countries.

President Rouhani finally stressed the need to protect security of Iran’s common border with the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia and the lives of Iranian villagers residing in the border areas amid the war.

For his part, President Aliyev expressed gratitude to the Iranian officials for the “constructive stances” they have adopted on the respect for the territorial integrity of nations in order to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.

The Azeri president also noted that it is understandable that Iran is concerned about the security of its boundaries and the threat of rise of terrorist groups in the shadow of regional insecurity, stating, “We consider Iran’s security to be Azerbaijan’s security, and won’t allow the dispute to create insecurity in the neighboring states.”

Aliyev also highlighted the strategic importance of ties with Iran, saying Baku welcomes closer relations with Tehran as the bilateral interaction has grown constantly in recent years.

Tehran Tells Warring Sides in Caucasus to Respect Iran’s Border Security

Tehran Tells Warring Sides in Caucasus to Respect Iran’s Border Security

Iranian Minister of Defence and Logistics of the Armed Forces Brigadier General Amir Hatami said even a stray bullet must not be fired at Iranian soil.

“It would not be acceptable, at all, that even a bullet hit the Islamic Republic of Iran’s borders due to error and negligence, and the warring sides in the Caucasus region have been reminded of the necessary points they should consider in that regard,” the defence chief said.

He made the comment after Iran’s border areas were fired at, by mistake, amid clashes between the warring sides in Karabakh.

“In this incident, some bullets were mistakenly fired at the Islamic Republic of Iran’s border areas,” he said, adding, “Iran’s borders are a key and important issue for the Armed Forces.”

“We hope the neighbouring countries involved in the conflict will take heed of the points we told them because the security of Iranian citizens, including those on border areas, is an important issue,” the defence minister said.

“If this issue continues, more measures will be adopted (by Iran), and it would not be acceptable for Iranian citizens to be harmed, even by mistake,” he noted.

Military forces of the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia, which are divided over the ownership of the disputed region of Kharabakh, once again opened fire at each other on their common border a few days ago after two months. Each side accused the other of having started the fighting, which is still ongoing.

Iran Announces Tougher Restrictions to Rein in COVID-19 Outbreak

Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi said on Tuesday expert discussions are underway on the amount of the fine and how it should be enforced.

The official further noted a draft directive has also been drawn up to punish individuals who know they are infected with the coronavirus, yet they travel through the society.

The official then touched upon the implementation of restrictions in the capital, Tehran.
