Sultana Production; A 1,000-Year-Old Career in Iranian Village

Sultana Production; A 1,000-Year-Old Career in Iranian Village

These days, the roofs and yards of homes in the 1,000-year-old tourist village of Doolab (or as locals call it Doolaw or Boolaw) have turned gold as they are full of sultanas produced in old local vineyards.

These raisins are produced with a very special and traditional method and in cooperation with all villagers.

Fewer than 500 households live in the village, which has around 70 vineyards, producing nearly a hundred tonnes of grapes and hundreds of kilograms of sultanas, which are unique in the country.

What has made these golden raisins unique is the method used to produce them, a method registered on the list of the National Intangible Heritage in 2015.

The quality organic sultanas produced in Doolab are well known across Iran as a traditional method is used to produce them. Every year, all families are invited to take the grapes picked in the vineyards to the furnace. Then they boil the grapes in big pots during a special process. Afterwards, the grapes are taken to rooftops of houses and spread on the roofs to remain in the sun. The sultanas are ready for use after almost 10 days.

The ceremony to produce sultanas in this region is a much-revered event attended by a host of families and friends.

Iran Condemns Attack on British Diplomatic Mission in Iraq

Khatibzadeh made the remarks on Thursday in reaction to reports that a roadside bombing has targeted a convoy of diplomatic vehicles in Baghdad.

The Iranian spokesman condemned any attack or assault against diplomatic missions.

He pointed to cases of attacks on Iran’s diplomats and diplomatic sites in Iraq, calling on the Iraqi government to intensify and step up the protection of diplomatic places and guarantee the normal activity of diplomatic missions in that country.

His remarks came after the British embassy in Baghdad and Iraqi officials reported a bombing attack on British diplomatic vehicles on Tuesday.

The attack has reportedly targeted an embassy convoy on a Baghdad highway close to the Umm al-Tabool Mosque, but has left no injuries.

Iran’s President Congratulates Suga on Appointment as Japan’s PM

In a message on Thursday, President Rouhani warmly congratulated Suga on taking office as Japan’s new prime minister.

The president also paid tribute to former Japanese prime minister, Abe Shinzo, for his “major and influential role” in promoting relations between Iran and Japan.

“The constant consultations between the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan, especially in 2019 on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of establishment of political ties which was marked by reciprocal visits by the heads of the two states to their respective capitals, have opened a new chapter in the expansion of relations in all fields of mutual interest,” President Rouhani added.

He further expressed hope that the friendly relations between Iran and Japan and their mutual cooperation in various fields, particularly the economic and trade ties, would further grow during Prime Minister Suga’s tenure.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s policy has been always based on helping advance peace and security, respect, and mutual commitment to the international undertakings and agreements. Accordingly, I hope that consultations and joint efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan over the regional and international subjects would continue like before,” the president concluded.

He finally wished health, success and prosperity for the Japanese leader and people.

Yoshihide Suga was elected as Japan’s new prime minister by the country’s lower house of parliament on Wednesday, replacing Shinzo Abe who resigned because of poor health and promising to continue his signature economic policies.

71-year-old Suga won the leadership contest of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Monday.

The former Chief Cabinet Secretary and Abe loyalist appointed a new cabinet shortly after he became prime minister, keeping about half of the familiar faces from his predecessor’s lineup.

UAE, Bahrain Rulers Accessories to All Israeli Crimes: Iran Speaker

UAE, Bahrain Rulers Accessories to All Israeli Crimes

The comment by Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf came in a statement issued in reaction to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain normalizing relations with Tel Aviv.

“Many regional governments have, for years, been lovingly kissing the hands of despotic Zionists who have blood on their hands, and clawing at the haggard faces of oppressed Palestinian people,” read part of the statement.

He said the recent peace agreements with Israel were simply putting on paper the UAE and Bahrain’s shameful years-long animosity with Palestinians.

“They have had cordial relations with the hostile Zionist enemy at all times,” the statement added.

The top parliamentarian added the normalization agreements with Tel Aviv have brought humiliation upon the UAE and Bahrain.

Iran Berates Israel for Rehashing Groundless Accusations at IAEA

Iran Berates Israel for Rehashing Groundless Accusations at IAEA

In his speech, Iran’s delegate to a meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohsen Baharvand gave a harshly-worded response to the Israeli representative to the meeting.

The Israeli delegate had rehashed baseless claims about Tehran’s nuclear program and accused Iran of conducting undeclared nuclear activities in Turquzabad, a village in Ray County near the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The Iranian delegate dismissed the Israeli representative’s comments as a “childish story” which was “soporific and humiliating.”

Baharvand said the Israeli delegate was making the remarks while “maintaining the posture of a philosopher with those glasses on his nose.”

The Iranian representative blasted Tel Aviv for possessing hundreds of nuclear warheads, not joining the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and not allowing IAEA inspectors to monitor its nuclear work.

He said Israel has not undertaken any international commitments. “Such effrontery is shameful,” said the Iranian delegate, according to a report by Etemad newspaper.

US Objection to ICJ’s Jurisdiction Aimed at Buying Time: Iran

US Objection to ICJ’s Jurisdiction Aimed at Buying Time: Iran

In remarks on Wednesday, director of the Iranian Presidency’s Centre for International Legal Affairs and the country’s representative in the International Court of Justice, Hamidreza Olumi Yazdi, said the US has questioned the ICJ’s jurisdiction with the purpose of delaying the legal procedure for hearing Iran’s complaint and the strong evidence for the US violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity.

The US’ reasons to object to the ICJ’s competence to rule in the case either lack legal basis or are based on groundless allegations against Iran, he added.

Denouncing the “illegal” re-imposition of US sanctions after its withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Olumi Yazdi said the “cruel” sanctions have already targeted all sectors of Iran’s economy, including the oil and gas industries, financial and banking sector, automobile and shipping industries, metal production and construction.

The US sanctions have inflicted widespread financial and non-financial damages on the Iranian people and companies, he deplored.

The Iranian official finally reminded the ICJ president and judges that the international court has now a “historic opportunity” to stand against the US government’s unilateralism and law-breaking, to dismiss Washington’s baseless objection, and begin to hear the case.

The International Court of Justice has begun weeklong sessions on the issue of its jurisdiction to consider the complaint filed by Iran against the re-imposition of US sanctions.

Iran began a legal battle before the International Court of Justice in July 2018, after US President Donald Trump re-imposed harsh unilateral sanctions on Tehran, which were suspended under the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

In May 2018, Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement. Later in October, the US faced its first setback in the highest judicial body of the United Nations after the International Court of Justice ordered the suspension of some of the sanctions that were re-imposed on Iran, including goods used for “humanitarian purposes.”

Washington responded immediately by canceling a friendship agreement signed between the two countries in 1955, which the court had relied on to justify its decision.

Iran had asked the International Court of Justice to suspend the sanctions temporarily until the judges decide on the content of the case, which could take years. The court will consider these sessions within its competence to rule in the case, which Washington strongly opposes, Right Now Times reported.

The International Court of Justice was established after the Second World War and examines disputes between states, but it does not have the binding means to implement its decisions.

During the Wednesday talks, the two sides exchanged views on the issues related to the Syrian Constitutional Committee, Idlib, and humanitarian situation in the Arab country.

They also reiterated their support for the political process and the continued work of the Constitutional Committee, and called on the international community to assist the Syrian people considering the difficult humanitarian situation in the country, especially amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

Khaji finally underlined the necessity of implementing the Idlib agreements in a bid to maintain calm in the region and prevent an escalation of tensions.

Pompeo’s Anti-Iran Tweets ‘Psychotic’ Reaction to US Defeats: Official

Pompeo's Anti-Iran Tweets 'Psychotic' Reaction to US Defeats: Official

In a statement on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson described Pompeo’s recent tweets about Iran’s internal issues, which were filled with anger at Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, as a psychotic reaction caused by disappointment and depression following the US Department of State’s successive defeats and as an attempt to cover up those failures.

“Unfortunately, the US state secretary, who is witnessing the failure of the policy of maximum pressure and unilateralism on Iran more and more, is attempting desperately to retrieve part of the lost prestige of Trump’s regime by claiming to advocate human rights,” he noted.

The spokesman underlined that the US government itself has the darkest human rights record as there is no single day without protests from the American people against violence, discrimination and racism.

“In spite of the dire situation inside the US, Mr. Pompeo who has received training in fabrication, deception and lying at the CIA, is seeking to divert the public opinion’s attention based on ‘the bigger the lie, the more it will be believed’,” Khatibzadeh concluded.

His comments came after Pompeo slammed the execution of Iranian convict Navid Afkari as a despicable act, calling for consequences for what he called the Iranian government’s barbarity.

The US state secretary claimed that world leaders have taken the first step to counter Iran and have cancelled Foreign Minister Zarif’s European visits.

Zarif was due to visit Germany this week, but cancelled his visit for what the Iranian Foreign Ministry says was “logistical problems”.
