Iran Condemns Vienna Terror Attack, Warns against Hatemongering

Iran Condemns Vienna Terror Attack, Warns against Hatemongering

In a statement on Tuesday, Khatibzadeh condemned last night’s terrorist attack in Vienna, expressing sympathy with the Austrian government, nation and families of the victims.

“Terrorism is condemned in any shape, and the deplorable incident in Vienna reveals once again that terrorism and extremism know no boundaries,” the spokesman noted.

“Replacement of rationalism with promotion of hate and provocation would create a vicious cycle that only prepares the ground for the spread of radical and violent tendencies,” Khatibzadeh added.

The spokesman also stressed the need for interaction and cooperation within the international community in a decisive battle against terrorism, adding, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will always be part of these efforts.

Police in Austria launched a manhunt after gunmen opened fire at multiple locations across central Vienna, killing at least four people and wounding several more in what Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz described as a “repulsive terror attack”.

Fifteen people were injured in the attack in Vienna, among them a police officer.

The attacks, in six locations including near a synagogue in the centre of the city, were carried out by “several suspects armed with rifles”, police said on Monday night.

Iran Leader: Anti-Islam Stances Show Wicked Nature of Western Civilization

Iran Leader: Anti-Islam Stances Show Wicked Nature of Western Civilization

Ayatollah Khamenei said “some rulers suffered humiliation by insulting the Prophet” whose cartoons were published by the French satirical weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo.

“Backing cultural savagery and the criminal act of a caricaturist is another side of the coin of support for MKO terrorists and [former Iraqi dictator] Saddam [Hussein],” said the Leader in a televised speech on the occasion of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday anniversary.

“The Islamic community’s anger and protest at this event indicates that the Muslim world is alive,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader noted a lesson should be learned from this development.

“The French government links the event to human rights and freedom of expression. This is the same policy that is associated with the world’s most violent terrorists, i.e., terrorists who [in the past] killed our president, judiciary chief, prime minister and a number of officials as well as 17 thousand people in our country,” the Leader noted, referring to the MKO terrorist group.

He said France is one of the governments which helped Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein during the eight-year Iraqi-imposed war on Iran in the 1980s.

“They claim they favour freedom and human rights and the like,” said the Leader.

“The Quran and the Prophet Muhammad have been insulted several times so far. They cannot besmirch the Prophet Muhammad’s dignity and honour at all. Such move show the wicked nature of the West’s civilization,” he added.

‘US Suffering Moral, Civil Decline’

The Leader further reffered to the moral collapse of the US regime as an example.

He said The United States has fallen into a substantial decline and Washington’s regime will not live long.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the White House itself has admitted that the US is nosediving.

“To be fair, the US regime has gone into a dramatic political, civil and moral decline. What I’m saying is not an analysis. It is something that they themselves are saying,” the Leader said.

“This is the word of their own spokespeople as well as authors and thinkers inside the United States,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“Over the past several years, they have written a number of books which have been published in high circulation inside the US,” he noted.

“These books shed light on some facts,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said one of these books, which has been translated into Persian, is full of evidence indicative of the “decline of the US political system due to moves by the US president.’

“Such an empire won’t last long,” the Leader stressed.

“It is obvious that when a regime gets to this point, it will not last long and will explode,” he said.

Iranian, Russian Diplomats Discuss Mutual Economic Cooperation

In the Monday meeting, the two sides exchanged views on mutual economic cooperation, the assessment of the outcome, over the past year, of the free trade agreement between Iran the Eurasian Economic Union as well as the development of that cooperation, and Tehran-Moscow cooperation in regional and international economic organizations.

During their discussions, the two officials expressed content with the enhancement of reciprocal economic ties, highlighting the necessity of redoubling efforts in that domain amid the critical condition caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

They also said they would like to move forward with Iran-Russia consultations with regards to international oil and natural gas markets as well as transportation corridors.

They also welcomed the holding of economic and trade conferences on issues of mutual interest as an ideal opportunity to maintain economic contact and relations between the two sides.

Iran’s President Congratulates Muslim Nations on Prophet’s Birth Anniversary

In separate congratulatory messages to the Muslim countries’ heads of state on Monday, President Rouhani lauded Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as “the messenger of peace and friendship and the symbol of purity”.

The teachings of the revered Prophet of Islam have always illuminated the path for humanity in darkness and have guided people to premium spiritual horizons of humanitarian values, the president noted, adding, “Following the manners of the highly-revered Prophet (PBUH) and getting assistance from the Quran and his celestial miracle could help human beings in the face of various problems, disputes and adversity in the world.”

Paying tribute to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the symbol of ethics and the divine mercy to the worlds, President Rouhani said insulting such great figure is tantamount to insulting the values, ethics and freedom.

“Supporting those who have offended (the Prophet of Islam) is supporting rascality, evil, sacrilege, and radicalism,” the president deplored, adding, “The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns such action, and we expect the Islamic countries to condemn such ill-advised measures as well.”

The Iranian president also expressed hope for the acceleration of the process of tackling the coronavirus pandemic and for the eradication of COVID-19 across the world.

President Rouhani finally expressed confidence that concerted efforts would help deal with the pandemic and restore health and prosperity to humanity.

Iran Says Will Wait for Policy Changes No Matter Who Wins US Elections

No Change in Iran’s Borders as Karabakh Peace Deal Unfolds: Spokesman

Speaking to reporters at a weekly press conference on Monday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said, “In Iran, our stance is clear. We do not care about tomorrow (US presidential Election Day) at all. We would see what policy would be adopted by the new US government, from whatever party it is.”

“What is obvious is that both (US) parties and both camps have realized how heavily their policies have failed. They have not achieved any of their objectives (against Iran),” Khatibzadeh added.

He then reminded the US government that the only framework for dialogue is what has been defined by the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“Within this framework, anybody making up for the damages, returning (to the nuclear deal) and ending such terrorist-style war against the Iranian nation will be allowed to be in that framework along with the others,” he noted.

“We would monitor tomorrow’s election (in the US), and will then care about the next US government’s measures rather than the (election) results,” the spokesperson concluded.

He also dismissed the accusations that Iran has sought to meddle in the US presidential election.

“History shows that the country that launches coups and interferes (in other countries), the country that changes the heads of (other) states and spends money -as the CIA deploys forces (to other countries)- is the US,” he noted.

“Tehran has announced repeatedly that it is neither interested in meddling in the US elections, nor does it deem the acts of interference to be in the interests of anybody,” the Iranian spokesman stressed.

Khatibzadeh noted that the US election result is based upon a decision made by the American people alone.

“Nevertheless, it appears that the US election has turned into a show more than before. They (US officials) try to make this show more attractive. The whole accusations (against Iran) are rejected, as they are totally baseless,” he stated.

‘Biden’s Victory to Keep Iran’s Hardliners from Winning 2021 Votes’

Ali Motahari, the former vice-speaker of the Iranian parliament, says the results of US elections won’t impact Iran’s pursuit of its “strategic policies” and won’t change the Islamic Republic’s long-term goals, but they will definitely influence Iran’s domestic politics and certain short-term policies.

“If Donald Trump is elected, things will get more difficult [for Iran]; but if Biden wins the US elections, the atmosphere will change to some extent,” Motahari said in an interview with reformist daily newspaper Shargh.

“Of course Biden will face numerous obstacles for removal of the sanctions imposed by Trump, because Trump has put many of the US sanctions against Iran under the categories of human rights and fight against terrorism, the lifting of which would require the Congress approval. Without that, it will be impossible to remove them,” he noted.

“If Biden’s decision is to return the US to the JCPOA (2015 nuclear deal), Iran’s initial condition is the removal of all those sanctions, for which he’ll be faced with such obstacles,” Motahari noted.

However, he added, if Biden wins, there will be openings for Iran naturally and because of psychological reasons.

“If Trump is elected and he’d maintain his current policies and the problems continue to exist, the cold political atmosphere will remain in place, and people will once again show little turnout in the 2021 elections,” he said.

But with Biden’s victory, he added, the relative improvement of Iran’s economic problems will make people hopeful about their livelihood, and there will be bigger turnout in the elections.

“In case of a big turnout … hardliners will naturally fail to win the elections, and a moderate will [once again] become the president.”

Motahari said there is no problem with bilateral negotiations between Tehran and Washington on regional issues or Iran’s missile program if the latter removes all the sanctions.

“Iran’s stances on the region include the liberation of Palestine and the withdrawal of US troops from the region, and this stance will never change. Relying on such a principle, I believe there is no problem talking about issues like Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. But all these depend on the entire Establishment’s decision,” he added.

Iranian Diplomat, UN Envoy Discuss Syria Developments

Iranian Diplomat, UN Envoy Discuss Syria Developments

In the talks held on Monday morning, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy briefed the Iranian diplomat on the results of his recent negotiations about Syria in a number of regional countries.

Pedersen and Khaji also talked about the latest progress in holding the next meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, hoping that the fourth session of the committee would convene in the near future.

The two officials further discussed the issues surrounding a conference on the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons, due to be held in Damascus later this month.

In the Monday talks, Khaji emphasized the necessity of addressing the problems of Syrian refugees and displaced persons as a humanitarian issue that would build trust among the Syrian sides.

Highlighting the positive impacts that the upcoming conference would have on the political settlement of the crisis in Syria, Khaji called for the international community’s active participation in the conference.
