No Change in Iran’s Borders as Karabakh Peace Deal Unfolds: Spokesman

No Change in Iran’s Borders as Karabakh Peace Deal Unfolds: Spokesman

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the ceasefire deal between the two countries will not lead to any changes in Iranian frontiers.

“The geographical borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as the regional borders have not changed, and will not change in the future. Neither Iran’s borders, nor regional borders will change,” he said in his weekly press conference.

“Our understanding of what has been published, an understanding which we have clearly told everyone about, is that it is just a simple transit route whose ifs and buts, way of ensuring its security and other issues related to it must definitely be discussed,” he added.

“Naturally, the Islamic Republic of Iran will pursue the matter with sensitivity and vigilance. Our envoys are vigilantly following up on the issue in the capitals of the regional countries,” the spokesman noted.

He further highlighted Iran’s policy of seeking to resolve the crisis in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“Iran has welcomed, and will welcome any permanent settlement of this crisis. Over the past three decades, Iran has tried to help resolve this issue peacefully.

Naturally, Iran embraces any move that will contribute to this trend,” he noted.

“As a country which has good, regular and balanced access to both capitals, the Islamic Republic of Iran will definitely concentrate an important part of its efforts on settling this issue.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal, which was also presented to the capitals [of the concerned countries], has considerable overlap with the initiative being implemented at the moment,” he said.

He then emphasized that terrorists reportedly operating near Iran’s borders should leave the region.

“I hope the Takfiri troops reported to be operating in our backyard have left the region by now because they no longer have any excuse for their continued presence in the region,” he said.

“We have announced time and again that this (the presence of terrorists near our borders) is our red line. I hope Takfiri forces are no longer there, as we’ve been told. I hope they have already left the region,” said the spokesman.

Iran to Avenge General Soleimani’s Assassination: IRGC Chief

Major General Hossein Salami underlined that General Soleimani and senior Iraqi military commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was assassinated along with him in a US drone strike in January, had a key role in breaking up the ISIS terrorist group.

“We are confident that children of great Iraq will also avenge the assassination of brave general Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis,” said General Salami, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Defence Minister Juma Inad.

The top Iranian general reiterated the plan to take vengeance has nothing to do with legal proceedings to bring the assassins to justice.

“Undoubtedly, in the world of Islam, General Soleimani along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis had the most determining role in toppling the ISIS and thwarting Zionist and American schemes in the region,” he said.

The IRGC commander noted that the US was dismayed at General Soleimani’s success, and that is why it decided to assassinate him.

General Salami then underscored the need for US troops to either withdraw from Iraq or be expelled from the country.

“The expulsion of American forces should be done in accordance with the enactments of the Iraqi Parliament, and this is what the Iraqi people want,” he said.

General Salami pinpointed that Iran wants Iraq’s territorial integrity and unity to be preserved.

He then called for Tehran-Baghdad cooperation to ensure border security.
The top general said Iran would like to see an integrated, united and free Iraq which is not dependent on other powers.

The Iraqi defence chief, in turn, thanked Iran for helping Iraq fight the ISIS terror group while stressing the need for mutual cooperation on border security.

He also said his trip to Tehran is aimed at boosting mutual relations and asking Iran to provide the equipment that the Iraqi military needs.

Tehran, Kabul Hold 5th Round of Talks on Strategic Cooperation

The talks were held in Tehran between the delegations of both sides and were co-chaired by Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, the deputy Iranian foreign minister for political affairs, and his Afghan counterpart Mirwais Nab.

In the Sunday meeting, Araqchi expressed content with the progress made in this round of negotiations, expressing hope the comprehensive document for Iran-Afghanistan strategic cooperation will soon be prepared to be signed by presidents of the two countries.

The document delineates the outlook for long-term cooperation between the two countries in political, security, economic and cultural areas as well as issues related to both countries’ expats as well as the issue of water.

In a separate meeting prior to the talks, Araqchi and Nab had already highlighted the importance of finalizing the cooperation document as soon as possible.

Iran Has No Choice but to Impose ‘Comprehensive’ Lockdown: Rouhani

“Today the government’s main duty is to protect the people’s health and contain the coronavirus,” President Rouhani said in a Sunday meeting of the cabinet.

“Therefore, considering the spread of the disease, the surge in the number of infections and fatalities, and the heavy pressure on the country’s healthcare sector, the government has no choice but to impose new policies and restrictions at the suggestion of experts, and prevent the spread of the destructive virus through a comprehensive lockdown,” he noted.

He later issued a statement to call for the mobilisation of the entire nation and government to deal with the third wave of coronavirus in the country.

In the statement, he said due to the mutation of coronavirus and the rise of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, and at the suggestion of the Ministry of Health and the Coronavirus Operational Headquarters, the “Comprehensive Coronavirus Combat Plan” was approved at the National Task Force against Coronavirus, based on which, severe restrictions will be imposed in various cities across the country as of Saturday, November 21, 2020.

Top General Says Iran Ready to Meet Iraq’s Defence Needs

Top General Says Iran Ready to Meet Iraq's Defence Needs

He made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting with Iraq’s Defense Minister Lieutenant General Juma Anad Saadoun Khattab in Tehran on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Baqeri referred to close relations and historical commonalities between Iran and Iraq, saying the armed forces of the two countries enjoy long-term ties and interests.

The Iraqi defense minister, along with Navy, Air Force, Air Defense commanders, discussed with Iranian officials ways to reinforce defense and military cooperation, he said.

They, he added, also visited an exhibition of Iranian defense industries and would hold meetings with their Iranian counterparts.

Baqeri further noted that during his meeting with the Iraqi defense minister, the two sides exchanged views on issues related to defense industry and security of the two countries’ common borders, as well as bilateral cooperation and joint military exercises.

“The purpose of this meeting is to develop and deepen security in both Iran and Iraq, but of course Iraq has faced several conspiracies in recent years,” he said.

“And now, as the Americans seek to redeploy terrorists in the region, this cooperation will provide better security for Iraq.”

The two countries have prepared a document on defense cooperation, which will be signed in the near future, Baqeri said, adding that Iran’s Defense Ministry supplied Iraq with the equipment it needed under previous accords.

He also stressed that preparations have been made to strengthen educational, operational and advisory cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries.

In 2014, when Daesh unleashed its campaign of terror in Iraq, Iranian military advisers rushed to the aid of Iraqi armed forces on Baghdad’s request, helping them reverse Daesh’s gains and ultimately liberate their entire homeland from the US-sponsored Takfiri terrorist group some three years later.

Top Iranian anti-terror commander General Qassem Soleimani, who played a key role in eliminating Daesh in the region, was assassinated in a US drone strike upon his arrival at Baghdad International Airport on January 3 at the invitation of the Iraqi government.

‘Iran-Iraq cooperation guarantees regional stability’

Also on Sunday, the Iraqi defense chief held talks with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani on bilateral, regional and international developments.

At the meeting, Shamkhani touched on defense and security cooperation between Iran and Iraq in their fight against terrorism sponsored by the United States and its allies in the region as well as the Islamic Republic’s unwavering support for the liberation of Iraqi cities from Daesh occupation.

“This cooperation guarantees the stability and security of the region and should be deepened to strategic levels,” he said.

One of US objectives in the West Asia is to create rifts and conflicts among regional states, Shamkhani stressed, underlining the need for the regional countries to exercise vigilance against “the sinister plot.”

He also underscored the importance of preserving security along joint borders, warning, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will deal decisively with any component of insecurity that intends to disturb the people of the two countries and their peace.”

Shamkhani further hailed a decision by the Iraqi parliament to expel US troops from Iraq.

Khattab, for his part, hailed Tehran’s support and assistance for his country in repelling terrorism and stressed expanding bilateral relations, especially in military and security sectors.

No third country can affect relations between Iran and Iraq, he said, noting that the experience of the two neighbors in the fight against Daesh showed that any crisis can be overcome through joint cooperation.
