Iran Calls for Global Action on Climate Change

Bahram Qassemi

In a Monday statement, the spokesman expressed regret over the deaths of tens of people in Canada over the extreme heat and offered sympathy to the Canadian nation.

He urged all the countries and governments in the world to remain committed to their pledges in addressing the climate change phenomenon.

Qassemi said the issue of climate change and its dire consequences must be taken seriously as it takes the lives of thousands of people annually and leaves various species of animals and plants dead.

He said all the states and governments should fulfil their pledges to address the issue saying the phenomenon is threatening the future of the earth.

Qassemi also blasted the US government for pulling out of international treaties like the Paris Agreement and violating its international commitments.

He then urged all big industrial states to remain committed to their pledges in addressing the issue of climate change saying the states have a share in emitting the greenhouse gas and other pollutants and consequently contributing to the global warming and other natural disasters like droughts and dust storms across the world.

At least 54 people have died in the past six days over a heat wave that consumed southern Quebec and saw temperatures in the low to mid 30s for nearly a week.

US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Paris climate accord on June 1 last year leaving many worried whether the voluntary, non-binding, global deal to avoid catastrophic climate change could survive.

The Paris accord requires that every few years, there will be negotiations for more ambitious goals on reducing emissions. In the lead-up to the latest talks, the doubts of the long-term survival of the Paris accord are getting stronger. The agreement needs 55 countries putting out at least 55% of the world’s emissions. And with the US gone, it’s easy for Paris to fail if China were to pull out now.

Iran Offers Condolences on Death of Leading Italian Orientalist

In a Monday statement, Qassemi extended the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s sympathy with the family and students of the late Italian professor and the readers of his remarkable books as well as all orientalists across the world.

“Throughout his fruitful life, the late professor made considerable efforts to teach and promote the Persian language and literature and expand the Iranian culture in the world,” he said.

Professor Scarcia was born in 1933 in Rome. He dedicated many years of his life to studying and expanding Persian literature and culture. He was in full command of a number of languages including English, French, Russian, Greek and Azeri.

Scarcia wrote over 170 books and articles mostly on the history of Islam and Islamic culture. He taught Italian language in Tehran University from 1956 to 1957.

Iran Sympathizes with Turkey over Deadly Train Accident

In a Monday statement, Qassemi expressed sympathy with the Turkish government, nation and the families of the victims over the tragedy.

At last 24 people lost their lives in the train accident in Turkey. Turkish media quoted the health minister as saying that 124 people are still hospitalized.

The train was derailed on Sunday evening in the Tekirdag region while heading to the city of Istanbul. Reports say heavy rains caused the ground beneath the track to erode away, resulting in the derailment.

Iranian Referee Still Hopeful to Officiate FIFA World Cup Final

The Iranian referee Faghani and his assistants Mohammad-Reza Mansouri and Reza Sokhandan have already shined in the three important matches they officiated during the World Cup underway in Russia, i.e. Germany vs Mexico, Serbia vs Brazil, and France vs Argentina.

The three Iranian referees have fulfilled all expectations but the changes to the table of the remaining matches are decreasing their chance for judging the final match, a report by Al-Alam news website said.

Europeans view themselves as the owners of football in the world and now the last four teams entering the final stage are from Europe. This, according to Al-Alam, has given the Europeans the upper hand in choosing the referees of the final matches.

For the time being, 13 teams of referees have remained in the 2018 World Cup with only four matches left. Now, it’s up to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to decide about the arrangements of the referee teams in the upcoming matches.

If Faghani is given a match in the semi-final stage in the coming days, it means his career in the 2018 World Cup will come to an end but in case he is not given a match, we will see him definitely judging one of the two final matches next week.

As the son of a referee, Faghani spent seven seasons in the Persian Gulf Pro League before making the jump to internationals.

Originally a player in the lower Iranian leagues, he became a referee and joined the FIFA-elite list just one year after making his top-flight debut.

In his career, the Iranian referee has officiated the finals of the 2014 AFC Champions League, 2015 AFC Asian Cup, 2015 Club World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Faghani was at the 2014 World Cup, but was named as a fourth official for the opener between Brazil and Croatia.

Iran Condoles with Vatican, Christians on Cardinal Tauran’s Death

Zarif offered his condolences in a Monday message to his counterpart in the Vatican, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

“News of the passing away of Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in the Roman Curia, filled me with sadness and sorrow,” Zarif said.

“This erudite man, who was regarded as one the Holy See’s renowned scientific and religious figures, made every effort to boost solidarity among followers of all divine faiths and promote dialogue among religions without any religious bias, nescience and extremism,” he added.

“He was one of the far-sighted men who, by holding bilateral and international meetings, managed to establish continuous dialogue among leaders of different faiths, especially Muslim and Christian scholars,” the Iranian top diplomat noted.

Zarif finally expressed condolences to Gallagher and all Catholic Christians as well as the Christian community in Iran on Cardinal Tauran’s demise, and asked God Almighty to bestow peace upon his soul.

Cardinal Tauran, a former foreign minister of the Vatican and expert in interfaith relations, died on Thursday at the age of 75. He was the one who announced the election of Pope Francis to the world in 2013 with the famous phrase “habemus papam (we have a pope)”.

He had been in the United States, seeking treatment for Parkinson’s disease. He had the condition for years, but continued his globe-trotting diplomacy to improve the Vatican’s relations with the Muslim world.

In an unusually personal condolence message sent to Tauran’s sister Friday, Francis praised the cardinal’s “courageous” years of service to the Catholic Church “despite the weight of illness.”

Close the lid of the cauldron tight and put it on charcoal fire. Put charcoal all around the cauldron as well and somehow “bury” the cauldron in burning charcoal. That way, the ingredients are cooked through slowly by the charcoal heat and the lamb’s gravy is gradually absorbed by the rice.

Official Says Iran’s Presence in Syria Aimed at Keeping Israel Out

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian parliament speaker’s special adviser on international affairs, stressed that Syrians would not permit the Zionists in their homeland following the collapse of the Daesh terrorist group.

“The Zionist regime tries to gain dominance over Syria after Daesh, but resistance forces and military advisers from the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue their presence alongside Syria to counter terrorism, ” he said in a meeting with Palestinian Ambassador to Tehran Salah al-Zawawi.

“The Syrian people will not allow the country to be turned into the hotbed of Zionist terrorists once again,” Amir-Abdollahian noted.

Over the past few years, Israel has frequently attacked military targets inside Syria in an attempt to prop up terrorist groups that have been suffering defeats at the hands of Syrian government forces.

Tel Aviv has also been providing weapons to anti-Damascus militants as well as medical treatment to the Takfiri elements wounded in Syria.

Iran has been offering military advisory support to Syria at the request of the Damascus government, enabling its army to speed up its gains on various fronts against terror outfits.

Amir-Abdollahian also said Tehran will keep up its “decisive support” for the resistance and will not give in to pressures as regards the Palestinian issue and Israeli threats against the security of the regional countries.

Zawawi, for his part, warned that Israel’s right-wing Likud party, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is seeking to control the Muslim world.

He further said the US is exerting economic pressure on some regional countries to advance the plans of President Donald Trump, who himself is implementing the will of the international Zionism.

Iran’s role in Syria is reported to be addressed at the July 16 meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the Finnish capital, Helsinki.

John Bolton, Trump’s national security adviser, said last weekend that the summit offered the possibility of a “larger negotiation on helping to get Iranian forces out of Syria.”

Such a deal, he said, would amount to “a significant step forward” in promoting Washington’s interests in the region.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, rejected reports that Iran’s role in Syria would be raised at the Helsinki summit.

“At any rate, the Russian side is getting ready, and Putin is prepared to discuss the topic of Syria,” he said, adding reports that Trump and Putin will discuss “a third country … are not true.”

Iran Expresses Regret over Deadly Floods, Landslides in Japan

In a statement on Sunday, Qassemi offered sympathy to the Japanese nation and government, and the bereaved families of the tragic incident’s victims.

Flooding and landslides have killed at least 60 people and left dozens missing in western areas of Japan.

Most of the deaths have occurred in Hiroshima prefecture, which has been hit by torrential rain since Thursday. Hundreds of homes have been damaged.

About 1.5 million people have been ordered to leave their homes and three million more advised to do so.

Authorities say it could potentially be the worst weather disaster Japan has seen in decades.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the authorities were facing a “race against time” to save and evacuate people.

Thousands of police, firefighters and soldiers are taking part in search-and-rescue operations.

Some of the victims have been buried alive by landslides, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reports.
