ATR to Replace Iran with Alternative Clients amid US Sanctions

ATR has delivered 13 new generation ATR 72-600 aircraft ordered by Iran in 2016 but it has to secure licenses for further deliveries from the US which imposed new sanctions on the Islamic Republic last month.

The European airplane manufacturer delivered five more ATR turboprop aircraft early last month just before Washington installed the new sanctions on Aug. 6.

For more deliveries, however, the company appears to have given up on soliciting the United States, with Leonardo Chief Executive Officer Alessandro Profumo telling Bloomberg TV that ATR was seeking new customers for the aircraft.

“We are pretty confident that we will finalize the re-allocation to other countries by the end of this year,” he said.

The US decision on Iran has raised question marks over whether ATR can reach a target of stabilizing annual deliveries at 80 aircraft in 2018.

Profumo tried to play down the fallout, saying the company does not expect “any meaningful impact” from the US sanctions on Iran.

The planemaker had earlier said it would suffer financial damage if it were unable to deliver the aircraft it has already produced following earlier US approvals.

ATR’s co-owner Airbus has a deal with flag carrier IranAir for 100 commercial planes but it has delivered just three of them. Airbus said in July it would not attempt to deliver any more planes to Iran.

After the signing of a nuclear accord between Iran and other countries in 2015, IranAir ordered a total of 200 aircraft from Western planemakers. Boeing, which had sold 80 jets to IranAir, does not plan any deliveries.

The Europeans have been trying to portray the nuclear deal with Iran as a flagship achievement of their foreign policy and a symbol of their growing strength but their weakness in the face of US threats has undermined their bid.

Iranian officials have pressed the European Union to save the nuclear agreement through meaningful measures to guarantee Iran’s interests in the deal.

However, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said last month that Iranian officials should stop pinning their hopes on Europe saving the international nuclear deal.

“There is no problem with continuing relations and negotiations with Europe, but hope should be abandoned regarding matters such as the nuclear deal,” he said in a meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and members of his cabinet.

Ayatollah Khamenei is the champion of a resistive economy which seeks to counter sanctions through increasing the country’s resilience to outside pressures by boosting domestic production.

Masghati & Cookie: Yummy Souvenirs of Shiraz

The “Art of Cooking Shirazi Masghati & Cookies” has recently been registered on the country’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Masghati is a delicious desert also used as confectionary. Masghati is the most famous souvenir of the provincial city of Larestan. So, it is also known as Shirazi or Lari Masghati.

With the ingredients mentioned below, you will be able to make Masghati for six people.

You may eat Masghati on its own or with cookies. In Fars province, it is usually eaten with cookies.

Ingredients for Cookies
Rice flour: 200gr
Solid cooking oil: 125gr
White flour: 50gr
Eggs: one egg
Rosewater: a quarter of a cupful
Powdered sugar: 80gr

Recipe
To make cookies, first mix rice flour, powdered sugar, white flour and eggs.

Then add solid oil and a little rosewater before mixing them well until you get a paste-shaped mixture. Pick a little of that and roll it into a ball-shaped piece before putting it on the tray. Then press it with a wooden stamp to get an embossed pattern. After that, put it in the oven and leave it there for 20 minutes at a temperature of 160 degrees.

Ingredients for Shirazi Masghati
Sugar: 300gr
Starch: 150gr
Butter: 125gr
Rosewater: half a glass
Cold water: 4 glasses
Lime Juice: 1 spoonful
Saffron: as much as necessary
Pistachio Slices: as much as necessary
Almond slices; as much as necessary

Recipe
First, mix starch with cold water until starch completely dissolves. You’d better sieve it to get a consistent mixture. Now, pour the mixture of water and starch into a casserole and put in on the flame. Use low temperature to keep Masghati from becoming too dry at the end. Now, add sugar and mix it with the water and starch in the casserole until it dissolves completely. At this point, brew some saffron and add it to the ingredients inside the casserole.

Keep beating the ingredients until the mixture becomes thick. After the starch becomes thick, add rosewater and butter and mix it well. Now, oil the inside walls of the mould which is to be used for Masghati. We need to oil the mould to make it easier for Masghati to come off after it gets cold. Then pour the mixture into the mould and put some pistachio and almond slices on it and put it in the refrigerator for one hour to become hard.

After Masghati becomes hard, we get it off the mould, cut it into small pieces (usually cut into rhombus-shaped pieces) and put it in the plate. Msghati can be used both as dessert and confection.

43 Pilgrims Killed after Indian Bus Plunges into Valley

“We have pulled out the bodies and we are taking them to the hospital for autopsy,” B. Rajesham, a senior administrative official, told AFP.

Passengers who survived the accident in Jagtial district of Telangana state were being treated for injuries. An investigation has been ordered.

The bus was returning from the famous Hindu temple of Kondagattu Anjaneya Swamy when it skidded off the road, the Press Trust of India reported.

Television footage showed local residents carrying the injured up a hill after pulling them out from the mangled bus.

NDTV quoted witnesses as saying the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle.

Accidents on India’s notorious roads claim the lives of more than 150,000 people each year.

Most accidents are blamed on poor roads, badly-maintained vehicles and reckless driving.

On July 28 a bus carrying university workers plunged off a mountain road into a valley in western India, killing 33 people.

That vehicle was taking staff from the Dapoli Agriculture University to a popular hill station in the state of Maharashtra for a picnic.

The same month 48 people were killed and many others badly injured in the north of the country when an overcrowded bus hurtled into a gorge in the Himalayan foothills.

‘KRG Officials Repeatedly Warned before Iran’s Missile Strikes’

Iran Will Definitely Change Approach to UAE: Top General

Speaking in the graduation ceremony of police cadets in Tehran on Tuesday, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran Major General Mohammad Baqeri described the Saturday attack on terrorists’ positions in the Iraqi Kurdistan as a successful display of Iran’s missile power and said the Islamic Republic has reached all its objectives in this operation.

General Baqeri said KRG officials and members of the terrorist groups had committed not to launch any operations in Iran.

But they broke their promise last year, when the US administration provoked them to threaten Iran’s security, ISNA reported General Baqeri as saying.

On Saturday, the IRGC fired at least 7 short-range missiles to a meeting of leaders of the Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I) and the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) and their training compound and their residence

In a statement on Sunday, the IRGC said the attack was meant to punish terrorists who in recent years have intensified their anti-Iran operations.

The statement said credible reports show dozens of leaders and top members of the terrorist groups have been eliminated in the attack.

The attack happened in Koysinjaq, a city about 65 kilometres east of Erbil in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq and some 300 kilometres north of the capital, Baghdad.

Further Attacks Possible

General Baqeri said the KRG officials made efforts to prevent these anti-Iran operations, but they did not succeed.

The general said the Iraqi government and KRG must work to prevent terrorists from creating anti-Iran bases and they should extradite terrorist elements to Iran or expel them from their countries.

Otherwise, General Baqeri said, Iran’s armed forces won’t remain silent and will use their right to defend themselves against the threats.

“According to the UN Charter, this is a natural right for any nation and country to defend itself against the enemy. We won’t wait until insecurity comes to people’s house or our factories or population or [industrial] centres. We posses active armed forces and will deal with the root of plots,” he said.

“We show patience, send messages and issue warnings. But if the plots continue, we have no option but to stand up [to them].”

General Baqeri said it was not accidental that missiles hit the venue of the meeting and he hopes Iran will no longer need to repeat this.

“If these incidents continue to happen, what happened to their commanders will be repeated and the Iranian nation reserves the right to defend itself,” he said.

Iranian MMA Hercules Beats Polish Bear at ACB

Amir Aliabkabari

During the fight in Russia’s Krasnodar, Aliakbari and Omielanczuk battled against each other in three five-minute rounds.

Aliakbari managed to defeat his Polish rival in the third round, claiming victory in his second fight in the ACB, a report by ISNA said.

Aliakbari first sought to get close to his rival and have him fall on the ground through wrestling techniques and then win the game by hitting him on his face and head.

He failed in his goal during the first two rounds but by the beginning of the third round, he quickly threw the Polish fighter on the ground and immediately attacked him by beating him with strong punches on the face and head.

This came as the referees made a strange decision to stop the fight for at least three minutes to give the Polish fighter a chance to get refreshed but to no avail because Aliakbarai won the game finally.

This was the Iranian fighter’s second crushing victory in the ACB.

He has fought nine times in ACB with eight victories and one defeat. He carried out his first fight in 2018 ACB in Azerbaijan, overcoming his Estonian rival.

As a former Greco-Roman wrestler, Amir Aliakbari is currently in the heavyweight division of ACB. His rival, Omielańczuk (born in 1982) has been a professional MMA competitor since 2009. He has competed for the UFC, ABC and Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki.

ACB is an MMA, kickboxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu organization in Russia and one of the leading promotions in Europe.

Attack on Terrorists in Iraqi Kurdistan Retaliatory, Pre-emptive: Iran

Qassemi said on Monday that the missile attacks on the positions of terrorists in northern Iraq were not a desirable option for Iran.

In response to a question raised by Al Jazeera correspondent, the Iranian official noted that the terrorist movements, especially their killing of Iranian border guards and soldiers, forced the Iranian armed forces to take a retaliatory, deterrent and even precautionary measure based on certain credible information.

“We hope that, with the arrangements made by all parties, the shared borders in this sensitive area would turn into the safest and most stable ones in the region,” added Qassemi.

Undoubtedly, he said, Iran never gives any concessions to anyone when it comes to its security and the aggression of terrorists, anti-Iran figures and hostile dependent elements.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Sunday claimed responsibility for the missile attacks on terrorist groups in Iraq’s Kurdistan a day earlier.

The IRGC fired seven missiles on the positions of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I) and the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), killing at least 15 people, according to Kurdish media.

“US Claim of Bringing Iran’s Oil Sales to Zero Just Nonsense”

New Economic Plans Needed to Counter Fallout from COVID-19 Outbreak: Iran VP

The comment was made by First Vice-President Es’haq Jahangiri at a gathering of academicians in Tehran.

“However, there is a possibility of Iran’s oil sales dropping,” the official added.

He said today Iran is in a critical situation, but “that does not mean that all the existing elements are threats; rather, good opportunities can be extracted from within these tough conditions.”

“The experience of different countries also shows that major developments were the result of tough conditions, and many wars and difficult situations that countries experienced turned into important and positive results and events for them,” said the first vice president.

He touched upon the management of the ruling elite in the United States and Washington’s efforts to put pressure on the Iranian nation.

“Of course, they are not seeking military action because they are well aware of its destructive effects on the world. But they have entered into a soft war against the Iranian nation, and they are seeking to affect public opinion in our country through economic and media pressure,” he noted.

He said the US is trying to bring Iran’s oil sales to zero and prevent Iran’s access to financial resources and stop the imports of goods into the country by imposing sanctions on Iranian banks and transportation system.

“Despite all difficulties and hardships, the [Iranian government] is wholeheartedly looking for solutions to neutralize their programs,” he said.
