Ayatollah Khamenei lauds national police as solid pillar of security

In a message on the occasion of Iran’s National Police Week, Ayatollah Khamenei said the valuable role of the police has become more prominent in recent years.

“Cooperation and assistance to the bodies in charge of some public services, such as what we have seen in the interaction with the Task Force Against Coronavirus, is another aspect of this organization’s values,” the Leader wrote in his message.

“Everyone in the force – especially officials and managers – should try to improve the level of services…and by their function, raise the value of the law enforcement force in the eyes of the public,” the Leader added.

Iran’s National Police Week is held from October 9 to 15.

Law Enforcement Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been praised internationally for its achievements against organized crime and drug trafficking especially in border areas.

Official: Pasteurcovac provides 99 percent immunity against Covid

Alireza Beyglari was updating journalists on the progress of the production of the vaccine on Saturday in Tehran. Beyglari noted that Pasteurcovac can be re-engineered and in that event, it can fight multiple mutations at once, acting both as a vaccine and a booster.

The head of Iran’s Pasteur Institute added all these advantages have made Pasteurcovac a unique Covid vaccine, adding that the first and second trial phases proved the success of the vaccine and in the third phase, it was tried on 44 thousand people in Cuba and on 24 thousand others in 8 Iranian cities and proved effective.

Beyglari noted that Pasteurcovac is one of the safest Covid vaccines of the world and is also capable of providing a high immunity against the disease.

The head of Iran’s Pasteur Institute stressed that Pasteurcovac gives more than 91.6 percent immunity and can prevent severe Covid infection and hospitalization. Beyglari said that three doses of the jab provided a 99 percent immunity.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Health Ministry announced on Saturday 173 more people have died of Covid in the country in the last 24 hours. This is the country’s lowest single-day death toll in about three months.

The total Covid-related deaths in Iran now stands at over 122-thousand.

Officials also confirmed over 7-thousand new infections in the past day, the lowest daily caseload since early July. The downward trend in new infections, hospitalizations and deaths has held in Iran in recent days. Authorities attribute this to an accelerated nationwide vaccination drive that has seen 63 million doses of vaccine administered to Iranians.

New IRIB chief says national TV must reflect people’s concerns

“In order to promote hope and vitality, the IRIB must reflect the voice and concerns of all people,” Jebelli said on Saturday during his inauguration ceremony attended by head of the office of the supreme leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, senior civilian and military officials and IRIB directors.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting must always have something to tell the world, because there are so many audiences from all over the world who want to hear about the Iranian dream,” the new IRIB head noted.

During the ceremony, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf described as irreplaceable the role of the IRIB in running the country’s affairs, its success and reflecting the concerns of the people.

He also said “Today, media war is more important than economic war and we must try to win it.”

Peyman Jebelli has replaced Abdolali Ali-Asgari who served a five year term as the IRIB head since May 2016.

Iranian actor Ezzatollah Mehravaran dies

Mehravaran died after a long battle with the coronavirus at a Tehran hospital.

He had a bachelor’s degree in theater from Khuzestan University, in southern Iran, and a first-class art degree from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

Mehravaran acted in many plays, movies and TV series over the past decades.

He rose to fame with his appearance in “Gharibane” TV series directed by Qasem Ja’afari in 2004.

Mehravaran is the second prominent Iranian actor to die from Covid-19 in over a week. On September 30, renowned Iranian television and cinema actor and director Fatali Oveisi died at a hospital in Tehran.

Iranian FM, Syrian president hold extensive talks in Damascus

In the meeting, Amirabdollahian and Assad stressed the need to strengthen and deepen relations between the two countries.

They also exchanged views on developments in Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq and Syria.

The Iranian foreign minister called the extensive contacts between the high-ranking officials of Iran and Syria an indicator of the depth of relations between them and congratulated Damascus on its political, international and field victories.

He also said that the diplomatic atmosphere in the recent UN General Assembly meetings indicated that the situation has changed in Syria’s favor.

Amirabdollahian explained the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the developments in Afghanistan. He said, “We are in contact with all parties in Afghanistan, including the Taliban, and we invite them to form a comprehensive government.”

During the meeting, the Syrian president stated that in the short time that has passed since his previous meeting with the Iranian foreign minister, many changes have taken place ‘that have benefited all of us.”

Assad noted that Syria managed to hold a presidential election successfully.

He added that the US withdrawal from Afghanistan marks the emergence of new axes and the decline of the Western axis.

According to the Syrian president, regional countries and Afghanistan’s neighbors know that the United States does not accept responsibility for its actions and policies in Afghanistan.

Assad also said the Islamic Republic of Iran has this capacity and in order for Afghanistan to succeed, Iran must enter into negotiations with its neighbors and other players, because the Americans want to sow discord between Afghanistan’s neighbors.

Assad also said, “We are interacting with Syria’s Constitutional Committee in line with Syria’s national interests, and not as a result of foreign interference and the imposition foreign countries’ views.”

Regarding the developments in Idlib, he stressed the end of the occupation and the return of all occupied territories to Syria.

Amirabdollahian also referred to the pragmatism of the new government in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The foreign minister said that Iran has a plan for sustainable economic development, which will pursue it even in the event of the continuation of oppressive sanctions against Iran.

On the Vienna talks, Amirabdollahian said Iran will return to the negotiating table soon, and it will consider the issue of verification and receiving the necessary guarantees for the fulfillment of the obligations of the Western parties.

According to the Iranian foreign minister, if the talks are concluded, Iran will use them to accelerate the implementation of its development plan, but it will not ties its development plan to the talks.

First Iranian President Abolhassan Banisadr Dies Aged 88

He was the first president in Iran’s history, who was removed from presidency in 1981 after a vote of incompetence by Parliament as he was hand in gloves with the MKO terrorist group and sabotaging efforts to support Iranian troops during the 8-year Iraqi-imposed war on Iran.

In the 1970s and in the years leading to the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran, Banisadr, as a revolutionary economist, made speeches and published articles and books against the former tyrant Iranian ruler, the Shah.

In 1979 and just a little while after the victory of the revolution, Banisadr was among the few who came to welcome the late Imam Khomeini when he arrived in Tehran from Paris where he had been in exile. He then joined the companions of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

Following the triumph of the revolution, Banisadr was chosen as Iran’s deputy economy minister before becoming Minister. In 1980, he was elected president with 76 percent of the vote.

After assuming the top job, Banisadr put on his agenda plans to sideline revolutionary elements as well as drive a wedge between people and political groups. However, he failed in his efforts to dissolve Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as well as bring the radio and TV organization and the Judiciary under control.

Banisadr also committed high treason by turning a deaf ear to warnings about Iraq’s attack on Iranian soil and not informing top Iranian officials of what was going on.

After Baghdad invaded Iran, Banisadr tried to pave the way for the Iraqi military to gain control over areas in southern Iran.

At the end, Banisadr, disguised as a woman, fled Iran to France

China invited to Russia-sponsored Afghanistan meeting

Moscow has called the key players in Central Asia together for a summit to discuss the security of the region and the situation in Afghanistan.

On Friday, Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the country has “already received a request to take part and is engaging in consultations with all sides, including Russia”. He added that Beijing would support any efforts to stabilize the country and the surrounding area.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, revealed that representatives from the Taliban had been asked to participate in the meeting. Despite the militant group being designated a terrorist organization and banned in the country, Russia has played host to delegations from its political wing as part of the peace process.

Members of the ‘Moscow format’ under which the meeting will be held on October 20 include Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, India, Iran, and other nations. Kabul added that the so-called ‘Troika Plus’, comprised of Russia, the US, China, and Pakistan, were also likely to gather in the coming weeks in order to co-ordinate responses to the situation.

Ensuring that the nation does not become a hotbed for terrorism is likely to be high on the agenda, after a series of attacks in recent weeks killed American servicemen and sparked fears that the Taliban may be unable or unwilling to prevent radical groups gaining ground.

Study: Metropolitan Police worst at solving violent crimes

The rankings, which are based on official police data, showed that the proportion of sexual and violent crimes where the Metropolitan Police charged a suspect was 5% as of August 2020. Five years earlier, that figure apparently stood at 14%.

At the national level, police forces now solve about 9% – fewer than one in 10 – of sexual and violent offence cases. According to the new analysis by Poliscope, that number was 19% – roughly one in five – in 2016. A study published by the group in May projected sex and violent crimes to rise by 13% by 2022 and reach 20% by 2023 compared to figures from 2019.

“Too many rape victims in London are being failed and we need to see an urgent overhaul of the criminal justice system’s approach to rape, from the police through to prosecution and courts,” London’s Victims’ Commissioner Claire Waxman told The Telegraph.

“Without drastic changes, we won’t be able to restore the trust and confidence of survivors that they will be able to get justice,” Waxman stated.

Waxman also criticised the current “disproportionate focus placed on discrediting a victim and their case”, while calling for police forces to shift towards an “offender-centric” approach to investigations.

In October 2020, the London Assembly’s Police and Crime Committee cited figures gathered from the Met Police and the Crown Prosecution Service to show that reports of rape and sexual offences in London had increased by 25% between 2015 and 2020, while convictions dropped by nearly the same percentage over that period.

The rankings come at a time when the Met Police is facing a credibility crisis after the kidnap, rape, and murder of Sarah Everard in March by former police officer Wayne Couzens. Earlier this week, British Home Secretary Priti Patel declared that the murder had “exposed unimaginable failings” within the police force, and announced an inquiry to probe the “systematic failures” that led to Everard’s killing.

The announcement of the probe, which will also explore potential deeper problems in UK policing, came amid intense criticism of the Met Police, its commissioner Cressida Dick, and the failure of officers to act on previous allegations made against Couzens – who received a rare whole-life prison sentence last month.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday that his government needed to look “systemically” at “the whole handling of rape, domestic violence, sexual violence, and female complaints about harassment altogether”.

In the wake of Couzens’ conviction, Dick – who has refused to resign from her post, despite growing calls to do so – announced the Met Police would conduct an internal review into “standards and culture” across the force as part of an effort to restore public trust.

A recent investigation by the iNews outlet found that a total of 771 Met Police officers and staff had faced sexual misconduct allegations over the past 11 years. Over the same period, 163 Met officers were apparently arrested for various sexual offences – with 38 convicted in court.

China calls U.S. to provide details of nuclear submarine incident

The U.S. should clarify an incident involving a U.S. nuclear submarine, including the exact location of the incident, the intention of the U.S. navigation, details of the incident, what the submarine collided with, whether it caused nuclear leakage, and whether it damaged the local marine environment, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks Friday at a press briefing when asked to comment on the incident. According to U.S. media reports Thursday, a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine collided with an unknown object in international waters in the South China Sea on Oct. 2, causing many injuries.

Zhao stated that for a long time, the U.S. has been stirring up trouble and creating tensions in the South China Sea in the name of freedom of navigation, which is the root cause of the incident and poses serious threats and major risks to regional peace and stability.

Zhao noted the U.S. deliberately delayed and concealed the details of the incident, lacking transparency and responsibility. China and countries around the South China Sea have no choice but to question the truth of the incident and its intentions.

The U.S. and the UK recently decided on nuclear submarine cooperation with Australia, a non-nuclear-weapon state, dispatching nuclear submarines to the Asia-Pacific region without scruples, added Zhao.

This would create the risk of nuclear proliferation, induce arms race, undermine the construction of a nuclear-free zone in Southeast Asia, and dramatically increase the chances of nuclear accidents, he continued.

“The U.S. should abandon its old Cold War mentality, zero-sum game thoughts, and narrow-minded geopolitical ideas, and stop these wrong practices that undermine regional peace, stability, and development,” Zhao noted.

Khatibzadeh: Israel in no position to make statements about Iran atomic program

khatibzadeh-Iran

“This regime is sitting on hundreds of nuclear warheads, is not a member of the NPT, and refuses to join this treaty or any other international monitoring regime,” Khatibzadeh told France 24 during a recent interview.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman explained that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, has fully complied with its obligations, and 15 consecutive reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency show Iran has fully and sincerely adhered to the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Khatibzadeh made the remarks in response to a question about the Israeli prime minister’s claim during his address to the United Nations General Assembly that Iran’s atomic program has quote crossed all red lines.

He touched on the negotiations between Iran and the remaining parties to the nuclear deal on a possible U.S. return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, saying the United States needs a key to return to the negotiating room.

“Iran and the P4 + 1 are all members of the JCPOA, and it is the United States that wants to return to the negotiating room; so it needs an entry key, and this key is in fact the ability of this country to respond to the demand of the P4 + 1 countries and Iran,” Khatibzadeh noted.

He stressed that the U.S. must lift all sanctions that have been imposed, re-imposed, or imposed under other categories by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration against Iran, and provide guarantees that no one else in the United States will violate the agreement again.

Iran says it will soon resume negotiations with Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany in the Austrian capital Vienna on a possible U.S. return.
