Iran covid: Number of vaccine doses crosses 120 million

Iranian Health Ministry figures on Sunday showed that 120,003,437 doses have been given since the nationwide vaccination process was rolled out in the summer of 2021 in the country. Over 8 million people have also been triple-vaxxed.

The vaccination campaign has however failed to eliminate Covid deaths and cases though it’s credited with a downward trend in new fatalities and infections. According to the Health Ministry figures on Sunday, 41 people died of Covid in the past 24 hours while 1,510 people tested positive for the disease.

The daily caseload included 294 hospitalizations.

Iran has so far been shielded by the vaccination drive from a highly contagious new variant of Covid known as Omicron.

The strain has brought much of Europe to a standstill. It has also hit the US hard.

Iran envoy: US troops should withdraw from Syria

Mahdi Sobhani said in an interview that new horizons are opened in Iran-Syria relations and stressed the need for changing the current mindset on security condition in Syria.

He also emphasized that all the occupying and terrorist forces must leave Syria.

Sobhani stated that Iran-Syria economic and trade relations, as well as Iran’s cooperation in reconstructing Syria, are important issues in the current sensitive situation which both countries are challenging with economic war and sanctions.

Iranian ambassador to Syria further noted that several numbers of exhibitions are held in Syria which about 120 Iranian companies have attended.

Pointing to the occupying forces in Syria, Sobhani stated that Tehran strongly condemns occupying Syria by any country or force either in Golan, Northwest or Northeast Syria.

Sobhani underlined that although we cannot determine any specific time, sooner or later the US forces will inevitably have to leave Syria.

The United States is no longer able to determine the fate of the region, he stressed.

Sobhani for his part welcomed opening of new horizons in Syria’s foreign relations and expressed hope that they will enhance stability, progress, security and economic development in Syria.

He also underscored that Syria’s enemies should know that their policy towards Syria has failed and had nothing but damage for the regional nations.

A US-led military coalition has been bombarding what it claimed was positions of the Daesh terrorist group inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate. The strikes have on many occasions resulted in civilian casualties and failed to fulfill their declared aim of countering terrorism.

Iran calls for UNGA condemnation of Gen. Soleimani assassination

Gen. Soleimani

“It is hereby proposed that the esteemed assembly uses all initiatives, within its legal authority, including issuance of resolutions, to condemn the crime of the assassination of diplomatic and government officials by another government and to figure out a solution to prevent commitment of such crimes in the future. Surely, leaving perpetrators of the crime of assassination and their immunity against any condemnation and judicial punishment, will further the stagnation of the international peace,” read the letter, written on the eve of the second anniversary of the US crime on January 3, 2020.

“The direct responsibility for the violent international crime was claimed by the government of the United States. Unfortunately, for years, governments have been witnessing the inauspicious phenomenon dubbed the unilateralism of the government of the US, which entitles this government to any violation of international laws and norms whether enshrined in the UN charter or not,” the letter reads.
Iran also warned of the consequences of inaction against the US assassination.

“International norms have expressly prohibited extra-judicial killings, assassination of diplomatic and government officials, crime against humanity, flagrant violation of human rights including the right to life, unlawful use of force and violation of the principle of humanitarian laws. Just as the Second World War was triggered by an assassination, moving to commit any of the mentioned measures by members of the international community can push the international peace and security, built on international values, into a period of devastating chaos,” the letter read.

Third-dose vaccination drive gathering pace in Iran

The upward trend in third-dose COVID vaccinations comes as some of those visiting inoculation centers to receive the shot had complained of the closure of a number of vaccination centers.

The point is, those centers had been closed before the third-dose vaccination drive kicked off as they had few visitors.

Now, with the number of citizens going to vaccination centers to get the third-dose shot, the closed centers are expected to reopen.
So far, nearly 7.9 people across the nation have received the third-dose jab.

Roughly 60 million have got the first dose and nearly 52 million the second dose.

Iran’s Health Ministry announced on Saturday, 33 COVID patients lost their lives over the past 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities to more than 131,000.

Former Iraqi PM reveals new details about Gen. Solaimani assassination

Adul Mahdi was planned to be the last host of Soleimani during his visit to Iraq and they were supposed to discuss the war on Daesh terrorists.

“I was planned to host martyr Haj Qassem [Soleimani] in the morning at 08:30 on that day to discuss a range of issues; therefore, at midnight I was preparing certain key points to raise during the meeting, when suddenly my chief of staff came to my office in a hurry and said the intelligence chief of Iraq Mr. Mustafa al-Kadhimi, the incumbent prime minister, informed him of a massive explosion at Baghdad Airport and that there is no information on the details,” Abdul Mahdi said in an interview with the IRIB ahead of the second anniversary of the assassination.
“I was worried. Although, I did not know which air or land border Haj Qassem is supposed to use to come to Baghdad, I had the jitters, especially as I realized that moments before the explosion, an aircraft traveling from Damascus, had arrived in Baghdad. I immediately contacted the Iranian embassy and asked them about Haj Qassem and they said they had no information. … Footage was coming in one after the other when I came across the image of the hand of the martyr and his ring and I realized that Haj Qassem and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis had been targeted. I knew that hand and the ring well.”
Abdul Mahdi said the then intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kadhimi and representatives of the Iranian embassy later visited the prime minister’s office and there was an extraordinary meeting to discuss the consequences of the terrorist attack.

“Americans announced on six sharp Baghdad time that they conducted the attack. I cut off all contact with the Americans in a moment of anger. The White House, the US State Department and even the US Defense Department tried to talk to me, but I declined because I could not bear their stab in the back,” he noted.

“We lodged a complaint with the UN Security Council and held several special working groups with the Iranian side. Such a crime cannot be covered up, especially as the murderer, itself, and at the highest level of the US government confessed to the crime. Their move was a crime. No one should imagine that Iraqis ever forgot about the assassination of martyr Solaimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. This is unforgettable, but in some episodes, the situation in Iraq is complicated, and this may slow down the process of investigations, but will not put an end to it.”

Israel army pounds besieged Gaza Strip

According to the Palestinian Shehab news agency, the regime started unleashing artillery fire towards “the areas that lie in the north” of Gaza, including the al-Ghoul area near the city of Beit Lahia in early Sunday.

Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen television network has reported that several “massive explosions” had rocked Gaza’s northern areas after the regime began “releasing flares” there.

The regime then began taking the areas under fierce aerial assaults using helicopters and fighter jets.

The choppers, it added, targeted al-Qadisiyah, a site belonging to Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades–the military wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas–that lies to the west of the city of Khan Yunis.

The network described the Israeli bombings as “intense” and “incessant.”

Reporting on the same escalation, Al Jazeera said the Israeli warplanes had fired as many as 10 missiles towards the resistance’s bases in Khan Yunis.

The Israeli regime began taking the coastal sliver under near-daily attacks and a concomitant siege in 2007, when Hamas rose to power there.

The military aggression includes several wholesale wars, during each of which the regime’s military killed thousands of Gazans and devastated much of the territory’s infrastructure.

Several armed villains killed in fierce fighting in SE Iran

“Today, which is Saturday January 1, 2022, following firefights in recent days between the forces of the IRGC’s Qods Base in the southeast of the country, troops at the base managed to identify the hideout and whereabouts of a number of notorious armed villains in the General Korin Region in Sistan and Baluchestan Province by keeping a close watch and conducting a complicated intelligence operation,” said an IRGC statement.

A notorious leader of the bandits called “Gholam Shahbakhsh” and five others were killed with five more wounded in the fierce fighting, added the statement.

“The villains’ hideout and whereabouts were completely destroyed, too,” it said.
Three local militiamen fighting alongside IRGC troops were also killed in the shootouts.

Ex-Iran FM: World needs fighters like Soleimani, not warmongers like Trump

“2 years ago, I lost a friend, Iran a hero & the world a champion in fighting terrorism,” Zarif wrote on Twitter on the eve of the second anniversary of Gen. Soleimani’s martyrdom

“To those in denial, Trump’s true colors were on full display only a year later in US Capitol,” the former FM stated on Saturday.

“The world needs brave fighters like Soleimani—not coward warmongers like Trump, [former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu & Co,” Zarif added.

General Soleimani was assassinated along with his Iraqi trenchmate Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Units, in a US drone attack ordered by Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Both commanders were highly popular because of the key role they played in eliminating the Daesh terror group in the region, particularly in Syrian and Iraq.

On January 8, 2020, Iran retaliated by firing dozens of missiles at two US bases in Iraq, declaring that it was part of its pledged “tough revenge” and that the full revenge would be the ultimate expulsion of all American forces from the region.

On Saturday, thousands of Iranians and Iraqis commemorate the second anniversary of the US assassination of Gen. Soleimani and al-Muhandis.

Figures show growth in Iran exports to Iraq via Mehran border

Ruhollah Gholami director general of Ilam province’s customs office bordering Iraq, said the products have been exported from the beginning of the year to December 21.

He added that $758 million worth of goods were also exported to Iraq in the last 9 months via the Mehran border crossing to Iraq.

Gholami noted that the figures show a 133 percent growth weight-wise and a 120 percent rise in terms of value in dollar compared to last year.

Gholami said the most important export items during that period included construction materials, fruits and vegetables, plastic products, glass and cups, home appliances and metal products.

Referring to the total export of goods from the Mehran border last year, the director general of Ilam customs office emphasized that during the period, 1,542 transit consignments of goods worth $553 million were exported from the crossing to Iraq.

He added that currently, the traffic of export trucks to the border of Mehran is in progress and exports are going on without any interruption or problem.
