Israeli postal company targeted in cyberattack

“Down with Israel” appeared on display devices of Israel’s E-Post Company’s red metal mailboxes as the company reported to have been hacked in a cyberattack.

A video footage appeared online showing that collection and distribution boxes of Israeli Postal Company that people use to transport their packages are being opened and closed on their own while a photo shows “Down with Israel” slogan on the display monitor of the mailboxes.

The footage was posted on Facebook by a user named Kobi Samboursky who calls himself the “Founder & Managing Partner at Glilot Capital Partners”.

In another post on twitter a user who appears to be working at the Israeli E-Post Company confirmed the hack, citing cyberattack investigators and saying that the move was an anti-Israel action.

“The classic case of a Shodan search resulting with access to PLC box in-the-wild. This time a @unitronics EPOST admin panel hacked remotely. Found a 100 in @shodanhq to begin with,” said Ido Naor, a Principal Security Researcher in Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team, blaming the hack on Shodan, a search engine that lets users search for various types of servers connected to the internet using a variety of filters.

“The 22nd brigade of Hashd al-Shabi prevented Daesh elements from infiltrating al-Aith desert in eastern Salaheddin Province,” the PMUs said in the statement, using the Arabic name for their group.

Over the past months, the Hashd – PMU – forces have repeatedly blocked attempts by Daesh terrorists to enter different parts of Salaheddin Province, including the holy city of Samarra.

The Iraqi government announced victory over the terrorists in 2017. But pockets of the terrorist group remain holed up in different parts of the country, especially in its desert areas.

The other three people are two wrestlers and a coach.

Spokesman Mohamamd Ebrahim Emami said the US consulate in Dubai has told the Iranian team members to pick up their visas.

Emami also said Iran’s Wrestling Federation has informed the US wrestling authorities that even if one member of the Iranian team is denied his visa, the rest of the team will not go to the US. The Iranian wrestlers were supposed to fight their US peers in a friendly competition on February 12 in Texas.

Source: Jalili recommends JCPOA withdrawal, 90% enrichment

Saeed Jalili
Saeed Jalili

According to the source quoted by Iranian daily Shargh, in his letter, Jalili explicitly expresses his opposition to the current path of negotiations in Vienna and stresses that Iran must withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action now.

Jalili, who served as the lead nuclear negotiator under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, predicts that the other side will face legal problems in pursuing the snapback of the main nuclear sanctions against Iran.

According to the source, Jalili believes that any snapback of sanctions will require a referral to the UN Security Council, but Russia and China will use their veto powers and block the efforts of the Europeans and the United States.

The former nuclear negotiator believes when Iran pulls out of the JCPOA and intensifies uranium enrichment, it can sit down for talks with the U.S. and secure the removal of all sanctions.

The source says Jalili wrote the letter after he failed to convince Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and lead negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani to abandon the current path of negotiations.

Jalili has yet to comment on this report.

Saudi forces detain Shia cleric in Medina

Local Shia sources reported the development on Tuesday, saying the arrestee — who is the son of the late cleric Sheikh Muhammad al-Amri — was transferred by Saudi security forces to an “unknown location” upon detention.

Sheikh Amri is the custodian of a famous mosque in Medina and represents Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s senior Shia cleric, in the holy city. He had been arrested once in 2010 too.

His arrest came only a couple of days after a court in Saudi Arabia sentenced Shia cleric Sheikh Abdul Latif al-Nasser to eight years in prison on “terrorism charges.”

Sheikh Nasser had likewise been placed under arbitrary arrest while traveling with his family on the King Fahd Causeway, which connects Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, in June 2019.

Back in 2017, the Saudi kingdom changed its counterterrorism laws to include dissent as a punishable crime. The new laws came to stipulate penalties of up to 10 years in jail for insulting the king and the crown prince as well as the death penalty for “other acts of terrorism.”

Ever since, Riyadh has been coming down hard on its Shia minority, whose members are mainly concentrated in the country’s oil-rich Eastern Province.

Raisi hopes bilateral cooperation with China will expand in all fields

“I am glad that at the beginning of the New Year, the relations between the two nations have entered the second fifty years of diplomatic relations and coincided with the announcement of the implementation of the 25-year comprehensive cooperation program. I hope that in light of the mutual political trust and cooperation, we will see the development and deepening of bilateral, regional and international cooperation in all fields, especially the common interests of developing countries,” Ebrahim Raisi wrote in his message to Xi Jinping on Tuesday.

China is Iran’s biggest trading partner and remains an important customer of its crude oil even as many other countries avoid buying Iranian oil out of fear of unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States.

The two sides began implementing their 25-year cooperation agreement in mid-January to strengthen their long-standing economic and political ties.

Iran’s leader offers condolences over passing of Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani

Ayatollah Khamenei described Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani as a pillar of the Qom seminary and a prominent religious scholar.

The leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution also said in the time of the late Ayatollah Boroujerdi, Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani was one of the best students of that great master; in the time of the late Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Reza Golpayegani, he was his companion as well as a scientific and practical advisor; and during the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani was trusted by Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

Iraq’s top Shia authority Ayatollah Ali Sistani also expressed grief over the departure of Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani, describing the cleric’s death as a great loss. Iranian officials including President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian as well as former president Hassan Rouhani also offered their condolences.

Ayatollah Safi Golpayegan died on Tuesday after a heart attack. He was 103.

Iran FM: Tehran open to good deal in Vienna

Amir Abdollahian made the remarks in a phone conversation with Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne on Tuesday.

The top Australian diplomat said her country supports the negotiations in Vienna.

Also referring to the capacities of bilateral relations, Amir Abdullahian announced Tehran’s readiness to expand cooperation between the two countries in different fields, including trade, investment and scientific exchanges.

He described the development of the Iranian-Australian Spikogen coronavirus vaccine a successful example of constructive collaboration.

Amir Abdollahian called on Canberra to pay special attention to the rights of Iranians living in Australia and especially the consular status of some Iranian citizens who are facing problems in Australia.

Referring to Iran’s role in the fight against terrorism in the region, the Iranian foreign minister called on Australia to deal responsibly with active members of terrorist groups in her country.

The two top diplomats also touched upon the situation in Afghanistan. Referring to the plight of the displaced people in Afghanistan and the daily arrival of several thousand Afghans in the border provinces of Iran, the top Iranian diplomat reiterated the need for the international community’s attention to the situation of refugees and the formation of an inclusive Afghan government.

Marise Payne expressed hope that the two countries would work closely together on Afghanistan to encourage the Taliban to live up to their commitments and to make sure that Afghanistan will not become a safe haven for terrorist groups and transnational crimes.

Qatar says working to bring US, Iran views closer

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani

His remarks come after US President Joe Biden and Qatar’s emir met in the Oval Office on Monday to discuss bilateral ties and pressing regional issues.

Al-Thani visited Iran on Thursday, just days before the ruling emir’s diplomatic visit to Washington and as efforts by Tehran and major powers to revive a 2015 nuclear pact enter a crucial time.

The Biden Administration has announced it sees a path to an agreement in the Vienna talks over the nuclear deal, but Iran must make “tough political decisions now”.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh has said the Vienna talks have made significant progress.

“There are still important issues left in the field of sanctions removal … Progress [made] must be acceptable in the fields of verification and assurances,” he added.

“The other parties are clearly aware of the disputed issues and they, especially Washington, must make political decisions,” the spokesperson continued.

The foreign minister also said limiting Europe’s energy supply problems solely to the current Ukrainian crisis was “unfair”, adding that “global energy issues are not short term, rather, they take collective action to be resolved.”

Qatar, the world’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas may divert supplies to Europe if the Ukraine conflict disrupts Russian gas deliveries to the continent.
Al-Thani welcomed Biden’s promise to designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally saying it reflected the strength of bilateral relations and opened up “partnership opportunities.”

Qatar’s emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani ended his visit to Washington after sealing a Boeing freighter deal and meeting separately with Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to discuss arms sales.

Qatar has reached an agreement with the Taliban to resume chartered evacuations out of Kabul airport, according to the Qatari foreign minister.

The agreement is for two flights per week, chartered by Qatar Airways, and will allow the United States and other countries to evacuate thousands more of their citizens and at-risk Afghans, Axios reported.
