President Raisi calls for dealing with those behind iran football violence

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi

Raisi said that his administration is strongly opposed to behaviors similar to what happened in Mashhad that hosted the match between Iran’s National Soccer Team and Lebanon’s.

In late March, the president instructed interior minister Ahmad Vahidi to look into the events outside the Imam Reza Stadium.

Vahidi was tasked to look into whether the rights of people who had bought tickets for the match were violated. The interior minister later said many of the people who tried to enter the stadium had fake tickets.

The match happened during the Nowruz holidays. Many women who had bought tickets to watch the match, failed to enter the stadium. They said police did not let them in and the footage released showed some security forces force them to leave the surroundings of the stadium using pepper spray.

Authorities say many of the people did not have tickets for the match and that’s why they were not let in.

Following the event, the governor of the city of Mashhad apologized over the failure of the football fans to enter the Imam Reza Stadium to watch the match between Iran and Lebanon.

Mohsen Davari said 23 thousand people entered the stadium but large numbers of other did not succeed in doing so because of overcrowding.

Iran to begin development of joint Arash gas field in Persian Gulf soon

Iran Gas Field

Mohsen Khojasteh Mehr, the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), said Sunday that “preliminary and seismological studies have already been conducted” at the field.

“The development plan has been approved at the NIOC and will soon be launched,” he added.

“Developing joint oil and gas fields are among the NIOC’s priorities.”

Recently, Kuwait announced a plan to extract 1 billion standard cubic feet per day of gas and 84,000 barrels per day of condensate from the field under an agreement signed with Saudi Arabia.

Iran dismissed the agreement as “illegal”, saying it breached their discussions to build the field together.

Elsewhere, the CEO of the NIOC praised the surge of 40 percent in the country’s oil production capacity while the country was under US draconian sanctions, which were especially designed to cripple the country’s energy sector.

Iran’s crude oil production capacity has reached the pre-sanctions level of 3.838 million barrels per day (bpd), he said.

“This success was achieved under the toughest conditions created by the sanctions, which is highly remarkable,” Khojasteh Mehr said.

“The NIOC will use all in its capacity for maximum oil production.”

Taliban pledge to provide Iran’s share of water from Helmand as agreed: Official

Helmand river

Hassan Kezami-Qomi said on Sunday that on the sidelines of a recent meeting of Afghanistan’s neighbors in China, Taliban representatives had agreed to put the issue of Iran’s water right on the agenda of the ruling establishment in Afghanistan based on an existent agreement upon their return to Kabul.

“They (the Taliban representatives) stressed that, the issue of water should proceed according to the agreement [already in place], and when they return to Kabul, they will see to it that things will go ahead according to the agreement,” Kazemi-Qomi said.

The 1,300-km-long Helmand River flows into Iran from Afghanistan, which in 2021 launched operations at a dam constructed on the river.

The Taliban rulers in Afghanistan, who overtook the country militarily in 2021, are yet to receive international recognition.

China hosted a meeting of foreign ministers from Afghanistan’s neighbors in the central Tunxi District in Anhui Province on March 30. The foreign ministers of Qatar and Indonesia also participated as guests.

Kazemi-Qomi said the issues of border security, Afghanistan’s stability, and not allowing threats to emerge against neighbors on Afghan soil had been discussed at the ministerial meeting in Tunxi.

Grand Mosque in Mecca Ramadan

The ceremony resumes after a couple of years of restrictions on such events in the two holiest sites of the world Muslims, due to the Corona pandemic.

On Saturday, over 2 thousand people broke their fasting at the Iftar time at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Dozens of people were voluntarily serving these fasting pilgrims there.

Authorities in Mecca and Media have however kept some health protocols in place despite the decline in the Covid pandemic.

The tablecloths must be spread in spots determined by authorities.

All fasting pilgrims must use special gloves when they eat at the Iftar tablecloth. Meanwhile, plastic mugs are banned for hot drinks.

Iran manager warns England ahead of World Cup opener

Dragan Skocic

The Croatian, who will take inspiration from his homeland’s World Cup semi-final win over England in 2018, has told his players they will not be in the squad for Qatar if they do not believe it, too.

Asia’s leading team will meet Southgate’s Three Lions for the first time in the second game of this winter’s World Cup, at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Skocic insists: “There is no reason we should not think we can beat England. Why not?”

“Remember, I am Croatian, so I know we can beat England,” he stated.

“People might look at the game and say Iran beating England would be one of the greatest shocks in the history of the World Cup. OK. They can think that. But football is unpredictable,” he said.

“We are not playing 15 games, we are playing one game. And anything can happen in one game,” he noted.

Iran are ranked 21st by FIFA, 16 places below England, and their squad includes ex-Brighton man Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Porto’s Mehdi Taremi.

Skocic added: “Maybe we’d have preferred not to play England in the first game but it is what it is.”

“We are ready to play any time, any team,” he said.

“Of course they believe they can beat England and qualify. They must believe it. Because I believe it and I have already transferred this to the players. So they must believe it. And if they don’t believe it, they are not for this level of the sport,” he added.

Skocic suggested Iran’s desire is to make a point on behalf of their countrymen in a group that also sees the ‘mother of all battles’ against the US.

He stated: “Sometimes in Europe, the Asian teams are under-appreciated.”

“The real advantage we have is a lot of players who will be in their second or third World Cup. What is important is we have our best players fit. And I know we have the spirit of the  Iranian people,” he noted.

“But we have a lot of players who are playing in Europe and also they can fight, with total respect for others, but they can fight to get through and qualify from this group,” Skocic said.

“People will also try to say we know conditions in Qatar better and that will be an advantage,” he continued, adding, “But the real advantage we have is that we have a lot of players who will be in their second or third World Cup. We are ranked No 1 in Asia but this is not important.”

“What is important is that we have our best players fit. And I know we have the spirit of the Iranian people,” he noted. “It means so much for these boys to play for their country,” he stated.

The FIFA World Cup draw was announced on Friday in Doha, Qatar. Iran will be in a group with England, the US and the European playoff winner in the 2022 Qatar World Cup competitions. The final member of Group B will be a either Wales, Ukraine or Scotland.

Daily Covid caseload hits new low in Iran

COVID in Iran

That’s according to figures released by the Health Ministry on Sunday. The Saturday daily caseload was 1,887.

Meanwhile, the daily death toll on Sunday was 38. The fatalities push to 140,315 the total death toll in Iran since the start of the Covid pandemic.

Currently, 38 cities across Iran are marked red, the highest level of risk from the disease. The number of blue cities, where the situation is nearly normal, is 58. The rest of the cities are either orange or yellow.

The downward trend in Covid deaths and infections has been holding in recent days across Iran. That has been attributed to a nationwide vaccination campaign, restrictions put in place by officials and people’s efforts to observe the health protocols.

President Raisi: Iran supports stability in Iraq

Ebrahim Raisi Barham Salih

Raisi also said that is why Iran welcomes the establishment of a strong government in Iraq and supports the realization of the interests of the Iraqi people.

Raisi and Saleh were speaking in a phone call initiated by the Iraqi president.

The Iranian president said Iran and Iraq are not mere neighbors and there is a brotherly and family bond between the two nations.

Raisi added that positive steps have been taken to deepen ties between Tehran and Baghdad and that Iran is determined to boost the level of ties in all fields.

He underlined the need for efforts to stabilize the region without foreign interference, adding that time has proven that the US does not care about Muslim nations of the region including Iraq.

He added that today, it’s been proved that extra-regional powers are only after their own interests.

Raisi warned that any country in the region that moves in line with the domineering goals of the US and the Zionist regime will draw the wrath of regional Muslim nations.

The Iraqi president for his part underscored the necessity of cooperation between Iran and Iraq to overcome regional challenges.

Saleh said Baghdad and Tehran are on the same page regarding many issues and follow the same goals.

The Iraqi president said regional problems can only be resolved by regional countries.

He also said the economic possibilities of Iran and Iraq can serve the interests of both nations.

Pakistan president dissolves parliament, opposition motion blocked

Arif Alvi and Imran Khan

“The President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, has approved the advice of the Prime Minister,” a statement from his office said, meaning fresh elections must be held within 90 days.

Khan has survived a move to oust him as Pakistan’s prime minister, getting a reprieve when the deputy speaker of Parliament blocked a no-confidence motion as unconstitutional.

Khan, whose fate was not immediately clear, later advised the country’s president to dissolve Parliament, leading to fresh political instability in the nuclear-armed country of 220 million people.

Pakistan’s embattled PM was set to face the no-confidence vote on Sunday after the opposition stated it had the numbers to win.

The opposition needs a simple majority of 172 votes in Pakistan’s 342-seat Parliament to unseat Khan, a cricketer-turned-politician.

Key partners in his small but key coalition, along with 17 of his own party members, have joined the opposition to remove him.

On Sunday, giant metal containers blocked roads and entrances to the capital’s diplomatic enclave, Parliament and other sensitive government installations in the capital.

UN chief to Iran FM: Yemen truce victory for all parties

Antonio Guterres and Hossein Amir Abdollahian

During the talks, the UN secretary general congratulated the establishment of truce in Yemen.

The Iranian foreign minister also welcomed the establishment of truce in Yemen and thanked the secretary general for the role he played in this regard, stressing that the time has come for taking key steps toward establishment of peace and stability in Yemen, especially toward full removal of humanitarian sanctions on the country.

Amir Abdollahian also announced the continued support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for a settlement to the Yemeni crisis and ending the war in the country, noting “we hope, in time with establishment of truce, the full blockade on people of Yemen is also halted, so that this important opportunity is not wasted.”

The Iranian foreign minister also underlined the need for dispatching humanitarian aid to people of Yemen.

Amir Abdollahian also welcomed a visit by the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy Hans Grundberg to the region.

He also talked about the agenda of the Security Council to issue two different statements on Yemen.

“We welcome the issuance of a statement by the Security Council in support of the ceasefire, but if there is another statement that unilaterally, and without taking the Saudi attacks on Yemen into consideration, condemns the National Salvation Government, this will be unconstructive,” he said.

The Iranian foreign minister also talked about the latest developments concerning the negotiations in Vienna for removal of anti-Iran sanctions.

“We are close to an agreement in the negotiations and we have conveyed our proposals on the remaining issues through the European Union’s top negotiator to the US side, and the ball is now in the US’s court,” he said.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also described the important negotiations in Vienna as significant and expressed hope that the parties to the talks will reach an agreement as soon as possible.
