Iran detects six suspected cases of monkeypox

Monkeypox

Ebrahim Qaderi, an official with the Iranian Health Ministry, said on Friday that samples have been taken from five of the suspects, out of whom three tested negative.

“Given the fact that we’ve had no reports of the disease inside the country, we have started screening for possible patients from border areas,” he added.

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus, part of the same family as smallpox, although typically less severe.

The disease was used to be endemic to Central Africa but a recent outbreak across the US, Europe, Australia and the Middle East has surprised health experts, prompting fears of a wider outbreak.

The disease is mild and usually non-fatal. The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday reported that the monkeypox outbreak, while “not normal,” is still “containable.”

According to WHO, the virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials

Iran says has seized two Greek oil tankers in Persian Gulf

IRGC Boat Persian Gulf

The IRGC said its naval forces detained Delta Poseidon and Prudent Warrior for what it called “violations” in the Persian Gulf.

Reports say Delta Poseidon was escorted by an IRGC chopper to the Iranian coast while Prudent Warrior was seized by the Iranian naval forces.

The Greek tankers were seized off Bandar Lengeh and Assaluyeh.

The Greek foreign ministry called the confiscation of the vessels as piracy and called on Iran to release them.

Tasnim news agency quoted informed sources as saying that the IRGC forces captured the ship in a coordinated operation. They said there are still 17 Greek ships in the Persian Gulf which the IRGC could seize if Greece continues its shenanigans.

According to the sources, Greece must take necessary actions to redress its mistake regarding the ship carrying Iranian oil.

Arab-speaking news channel Al-Mayadeen quoted regional media outlets as saying the ships were confiscated in a retaliatory move by the IRGC following the Greek government’s seizure of an Iranian ship that was carrying oil.

Earlier, Iran summoned the Greek charge d’affaires in protest against the move. Tehran condemned the detention of its ship as “piracy” and said Athens did that under pressure from Washington.

Greece says it is sending the cargo of the ship to the US.

Iran first vice president: Massive corruption in collapsed building

Iran building collapse

Mohammad Mokhber made the comment after visiting Abadan where the deadly collapse of the building has killed 24 so far with dozens more trapped under the rubble.

The vice president inspected the debris removal operation while listening to what people and first responders had to say about the tragic incident.

Meanwhile Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi has said a crime has happened in the case of Metropol Building in Abadan. Vahidi, speaking in the southern city, said an investigation must be launched into the incident.

He noted that those who put people in harm’s way for the sake of gaining profit should not be forgiven.

The interior minister added that the people responsible for the building collapse must be punished harshly by the Judiciary for their negligence so that others learn a lesson.

Vahidi reassured all Iranians that the judicial system will be tough on the violators of the law.

Vahidi said the priorities include removing the debris, neutralizing the risks, taking care of the affairs of the bereaved families and an expert investigation.

Experts also say Metropol Building collapsed because of non-standard construction.

Authorities say Hossein Abdolbaghi, the building’s owner and the main culprit behind the tragedy, was killed when the building tumbled down

‘Iran to take punitive measures against Greece over oil tanker seizure’

Oil Tanker

Nour News, which is affiliated with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, reported the development on Friday, a day after Reuters said the US had confiscated Iranian oil held on the ship near Greece and will send the cargo to the US aboard another vessel.

Tehran has demanded the release of the ship seized under pressure by Washington last month.

Greek media said the tanker was carrying Iranian crude oil in what they called “breach” of international sanctions.

Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Swiss envoy, who represents Washington in Tehran, to lodge a diplomatic protest over the incident.

Iran called the move a “violation of international maritime law and international conventions” in its protest.

On Wednesday, Iran also summoned the Greek charge d’affaires over the matter

42 people hospitalized with COVID in Iran over past day

COVID in Iran

That was out of a total of 185 people to have contracted the disease across Iran during the past day, according to official figures by Iran’s Health Ministry on Friday.

Both the daily caseload and fatality rate — 6 over the past 24 hours — continue to stay low, following extraordinary peaks of 40,000 new infections and 700-plus deaths a day last year.

While the reason behind the low numbers in Iran is yet to be scientifically confirmed, as other countries with approximately similar vaccination rates continue to register higher infection rates, a national vaccination campaign is largely credited for the drop in cases and deaths.

So far, almost 27.5 million Iranians have received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Some 57.8 million have received two.

A total of 141,302 Iranians have lost their lives to COVID since the pandemic began in early 2020.

Overall, 591 people are receiving special medical treatment at intensive care units (ICUs) in hospitals across Iran.

Furthermore, no Iranian cities are red-flagged for a concerning spread of the coronavirus. And only 255 towns are in the yellow alert level. All others are officially labeled blue, or clear.

Iran summons Swiss diplomat to protest seizure of ship off Greece waters

Iran Oil Tanker

The Swiss chargé d’affaires was summoned in the absence of the European country’s ambassador as Iran is making efforts to secure the release of the vessel and its cargo that was confiscated by Greek authorities under the US pressure.

The Foreign Ministry told the Swiss diplomat that the confiscation has been a blatant violation of international law, maritime law and international conventions regarding freedom of shipping and international trade.

The Foreign Ministry has earlier summoned the Greek chargé d’affaires over the issue, saying confiscation of the cargo of the ship with Iran’s flag was an example of international piracy for which Athens would be held responsible

Shamkhani: Certain countries transferring Takfiri terrorists to Afghanistan

Ali Shamkhani

Speaking at the 4th Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on Friday, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), described terrorism and extremism as important factors behind instability in the South Asian state.

Unfortunately, he said, evidence reveals the role of some regional and extra-regional countries in transferring terrorists to Afghanistan and directing them, adding that the acting Kabul government and other states should shoulder their responsibilities in addressing the scourge.

Regional states, he said, should take joint deterrent action against the formation of “cells of insecurity and instability” in Afghanistan and the broader region.

Shamkhani blamed America’s “wrong expansionist polices” for the catastrophic wars in Afghanistan and Ukraine, saying Washington should not only unfreeze Afghanistan’s funds but should also compensate for the damage it inflicted on the country.

Iran believes the security of regional countries is intertwined and thus Afghanistan’s peace is a necessity for all neighbors in the region.

The top security official also pointed to the influx of Afghan refugees to Iran in the course of the US-led invasion of the country and beyond, saying Iran has been grappling with many problems in hosting the Afghan refugees under cruel sanctions and in the absence of international assistance

Canada admits canceled football match against Iran for political reasons

Iran Football Team

It added that Canadian MPs were angered by the decision to play against the Iranian national football team (Team Melli) on June 5.

Also on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he thought the game was “a bad idea”, suggesting that the Iranian national football team might not be allowed into the country.

Iran was supposed to play against Ecuador in a friendly match as well in Canada. That game was also cancelled before the Canadian football federation’s announcement.

A number of Iranian players criticized the cancellation of the match in Vancouver, saying football should not be mixed with politics.

Before Canada’s move, the head of Iran’s national team had said that Canada would pay $400,000 to the Iranian football federation for the match.

While the Canadian football federation says it has not paid any money to Iran, many Iranians including sports figures are calling for receiving damages from the Canadian side over the cancellation.

They argue that Team Melli had spent huge sums of money to prepare for the trip.

Canadians said they had chosen Iran for the match because of the Iranian team’s resemblance to Morocco, which is in the same group with Canada in the FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar in 2022.

Iran’s football federation says the country’s national team will camp in Qatar as part of efforts to prepare for the FIFA World Cup.

Russia says Armenia, Central Asian countries have US-funded biolabs

Biolabs

He made the statement in an interview with RT Arabic, which was aired on Thursday. “These laboratories exist in Armenia, Kazakhstan and in the countries of Central Asia,” he said, adding, “We are considering these problems with these countries on a bilateral basis and through the CSTO.”

“With practically all the CSTO countries and other CIS countries, we have either concluded or are preparing to conclude memorandums of cooperation on biological safety, stipulating for mutual disclosures on how biological programs are developing in each of our countries,” Lavrov continued.

“What’s important is transparency that allows us to make sure that these programs do not have a military dimension, as this is prohibited by the Convention [on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxin Weapons],” the minister said.

“These memorandums envisage mutual visits and examinations of the activities of the laboratories,” he continued.

“In addition, it’s been put in writing that the biological facilities of each of the sides must not be attended by military representatives of any third party,” Lavrov added.

NATO’s remarks about security in the Asia-Pacific region apparently signal that the alliance’s next ‘line of defense’ will be moved to the South China Sea, Lavrov said.

“Lately, NATO Secretary General [Jens Stoltenberg] and belligerent politicians, such as UK Foreign Secretary [Liz Truss] stated publicly that the alliance should have global responsibility, that NATO should be responsible for security in the Pacific region. Apparently, it means that next time, NATO’s ‘line of defense’ will be moved to the South China sea,” the FM added.

In his words, the European Union also seeks to assume security responsibilities in the region, but will not be allowed to create its own ‘army.’ “[European Commission President] Ursula von der Leyen <…> said the EU should be responsible for security in the Indo-Pacific Region. How are they going to do that? They talk of an ‘EU army’ of some sort. No one will allow them to create this ‘army’ as long as the North Atlantic Alliance exists,” he stated.

The foreign minister also touched upon the topic of US military presence in Syria.

“There [in Syria] there are still units of the armed forces of states that no one invited there. The American military, which has occupied a significant part of the eastern bank of the Euphrates, is still there and openly creates a quasi-state formation there, directly encouraging separatism, using a part of the Kurdish population of Iraq for this purpose,” Lavrov told RT Arabic.

He added that the US aims to keep Syria “in crisis” and resume hostilities. However, Russia will continue to provide humanitarian support to Syria, the minister emphasized.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the United States, the Israeli regime, and their Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups that are spreading insecurity in the country.

The US military has stationed forces and equipment in eastern and northeastern Syria, with the Pentagon claiming that the deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh terrorists.

Damascus, however, says the unlawful deployment is meant to plunder the country’s resources.

Former US president Donald Trump admitted on several occasions that American forces were in Syria for its oil.

After failing to oust the Syrian government through proxies and direct involvement in the conflict, the US government has stepped up its economic war on the Arab country.

In June 2020, the US enacted the so-called Caesar Act that imposed the toughest sanctions ever on Syria with the alleged aim of choking off revenue sources for the government.

The sanctions, however, have crippled the war-torn country’s economy by prohibiting foreign companies from trading with Damascus.

Syria says the real purpose of the measures is to put pressure on Syrians and their livelihoods.

US officials in Saudi Arabia for talks over Iran, energy

White House

Meeting senior Saudi officials in Riyadh were Brett McGurk, PresidentJoe Biden’s top White House adviser on the Middle East, and Amos Hochstein, the State Department’s energy envoy.

“I will confirm that Brett McGurk and Amos Hochstein were in the region to follow up on conversations on a range of issues including Iran’s destabilizing activities, ensuring stable global energy supplies and other regional issues,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

She said the trip was to “review engagement with Saudi Arabia on energy security” and that the US officials were not asking for an increase in Saudi oil exports.

“Asking for oil is simply wrong. That’s the way that we see it and a misunderstanding of both the complexity of that issue as well as our multi-faceted discussions with the Saudis,” she added.

She also stated OPEC+ will make its own decision as it relates to oil and added, “We are in consultation with all relevant producers about market conditions including Saudi Arabia.”

Biden and his team have been considering making a stop in Saudi Arabia as well as Israel after he travels to summits in Germany and Spain in late June, sources say
