Russia: IAEA board resolution on Iran to make deal more elusive

IAEA

In a tweet, Mikhail Ulyanov said if the European Union seeks an agreement with Iran, it needs to do more diplomatic efforts instead of getting a resolution approved against Tehran.

He posted the comments on his Twitter account after EU Foreign Policy Chief said chances of reaching a deal over Iran’s nuclear program are becoming slim.

The US and the European troika have drafted a resolution against Iran that will be put to a vote next week at the IAEA’s board of governors.

The resolution will call on Iran to cooperate with the IAEA on some unresolved issues concerning its nuclear program.

Iran says all this is part of a Western- and Israeli-led campaign to pressure Tehran into granting concessions over its nuclear program.

Tehran has also ruled out the possibility of letting its red lines be crossed, saying a deal in Vienna is at hand provided that the US makes a political decision and give up its excessive demands.

Death toll in Iran building collapse rises to 41

Iran building collapse

Meanwhile, the head of Abadan’s firefighting department says the search operation at the site of the building is nearly over.

Ebrahim Ghanbari added that the debris removal and demolition of damaged sections were carried out, adding some search and rescue teams are still combing through the rubble.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi earlier said authorities will show no leniency toward those responsible for the building collapse.

Metropol tumbled down due to what’s been described as poor construction standards.

The owner of the building was first declared to be the main culprit behind the incident but later he was pronounced dead after his body was discovered under the rubble.

Iran’s non-oil exports rise by 30 percent despite bans

Non Oil Exports

Accordingly, the exports of non-oil goods during the period stood at over $8.5 billion and imports at over $8.1 billion, which made the trade balance positive given that exports overtook imports.

The destinations of Iran’s exports are China, the United Arab Emirates Iraq, Turkey and India.

These five countries respectively imported the highest amount of products from Iran.

The surge in trade ties with other countries comes as Iran is still under the harshest US sanctions that were mostly imposed by former US president Donald Trump as part of his so-called maximum pressure campaign.

Current US President Joe Biden has so far refused to remove those bans.

Covid cases drop to two-digit mark in Iran, 1st time in over 2 years

COVID in Iran

According to the latest count, a mere 64 people were diagnosed with Covid-19, a respiratory disease caused by coronavirus, over the past 24 hours. Out of them, only 13 needed hospitalization.

The last time that the ministry reported a two-digit number of infections with coronavirus was in February 2020, when the virus had just been detected in the country.

The data showed 470 severely-affected patients are still kept in intensive care units countrywide.

With the latest tally, a total of 7,232,678 people have so far contracted coronavirus since the onset of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, seven Covid-19 patients lost their lives over the past 24 hours, bringing the overall death toll to 141,328.

On June 2, the daily death toll reached zero for the first time since the disease showed face in the country in early 2020.

With the new lows in coronavirus figures, many have in recent days praised the success of the national battle against the outbreak, which is believed to have been achieved through a widespread vaccination campaign across the country and the people’s observance of health protocols

Twitter suspends account of Iran minister

Twitter

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Isa Zareapur had last week arrived in Geneva to attend the World Summit of Information Society.

On Thursday, he started a series of reports to elaborate on Iran’s achievements in that international conference in his ten-year-old Twitter account.

But on Friday and only two days after the activation of the communication minister’s account it was suspended by Twitter managers.

The reasons for this suspension are still unclear, while a short while ago his Instagram account, too, had been suspended, but just for an hour.

EU’s Borrell admits possibility of saving JCPOA shrinking

The European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell

“The possibility to strike a deal and return to JCPOA is shrinking. But we still can do it with an extra effort,” the top diplomat wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

“As coordinator, I stand ready any time to facilitate a solution to the latest outstanding issues,” he added.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian had said the recent move by the US and European troika to prepare a draft resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency against Iran is an undiplomatic, hasty and unconstructive behavior.

In a telephone conversation with Borrell, Amirabdollahian pointed out the move will only make the process of talks over Iran’s nuclear program more difficult and more complicated.

The top Iranian diplomat warned any move by the US and the European troika will be definitely met with an appropriate, effective and immediate response from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran’s foreign minister referred to the determination of the Islamic Republic to reach a good, strong and lasting deal.

Cyber attack

Javad Salehi, spokesman of the Imam Khomeini Airport City, said Saturday that no hacking attacking targeted the passport control system at the airport, and that “penetrating the system was impossible.”

He said a technical issue occurred with an offline server of the system in the early hours of Saturday and it took the airport officials a few hours to solve the problem.

Colonel Mohammad Heidari, the manager of the airport’s Aerial Border Control, said a brief delay of about 15 minutes was caused in flights due to the issue, and that no passenger missed any flight.

No cases of monkeypox confirmed in Iran

Monkeypox

Iranian health officials had reported nine suspected cases of monkeypox, a rare disease that used to be confined to Africa but has recently started showing up in other parts of the world.

The virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials such as bedding.

The disease is mild and usually non-fatal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the monkeypox cases in the US have not been linked to travel to countries where the virus typically spreads, suggesting that the virus is spreading in the community.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported last week that the monkeypox outbreak, while “not normal,” is still “containable.”

The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox cases worldwide has passed 220 outside of countries where it is endemic, according to an update released by the European Union’s disease agency.
