Vienna talks

Referring to the talks in the Austrian capital, the official said over the past four days, intensive talks were held over a few remaining issues to make sure that Iran’s demands will be met and its worries will be removed.

“During the negotiations, we shared our views with the other parties and relative progress was made regarding some issues.”

He went on to say on Monday, Enrique Mora, the coordinator of the Vienna talks, presented some ideas regarding the remaining issues to all parties.

“Upon receiving those ideas, we responded to him and offered our preliminary observation. But naturally, such issues need to be studied thoroughly and we will give our final response to the coordinator of the Vienna talks and other sides.”

The official reiterated that “The serious concern of Iran’s negotiating team is to achieve the rights of the Iranian people, fulfill their interests, guarantee the sustainable implementation by the other side of its commitments, and prevent the US from repeating illegal acts.”

The Russian and the European Union representatives attending the talks, have also said ‘progress’ has been made in this round of the Vienna talks voicing optimism that the negotiations aimed at the revival of the Iran nuclear deal, JCPOA, will bear fruit.

Iranians mourn Ashura, Imam Hussein’s martyrdom anniversary

Imam Hussein and 72 of his companions were martyred in 680 AD, on the 10th day of the first lunar month of Muharram in the plain of Karbala, today’s Iraq, in a battle against the thousands-strong army of the then ruler Yazid I.

The rituals have lived on for over 14 centuries to get across the message of courage and fight against oppression, injustice, and tyranny to the next generations.

Iranians across the country mark the tragic event with elegies and Tazieh, musical re-enactment of the battle in Karbala, and commemorate Ashura, the culmination of the ten-day procession.

As part of the rituals they hand out votive food and drinks, called Nazri, to the mourners and the needy.

Iranians mourn Ashura, Imam Hussein’s martyrdom anniversary

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei attended the mourning ceremony on the eve of Ashura on Sunday without participation of mourners due to a new surge in the coronavirus in Iran.

The Iranian health ministry had already advised mourners to wear masks during the ceremonies and observe social distancing protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.

In the holy city of Qom in southern Tehran, mourners grieved for Imam Hussein in mosques across the city, most notably in the nearby Jamkaran Mosque as well as Hazrat Fatemeh Masumeh’s shrine, the sister of Imam Reza,  the eighth Shia Imam.

Hossein Rezaei, acting governor of the county, confirmed that the incident happened on Sunday evening, saying one person was also injured in the event and was taken hospital for treatment.

Rezaei also said the attacker, described as a “mentally unstable’ man, was arrested as he attempted to flee the Kerman Province.

The police rejected reports that the attack targeted a mourning ceremony for the third Shia Imam and the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).

For the past decades, Iran has been hosting millions of Afghans who seek refuge from the insecurity in their own country.

Ashura rituals as intangible national, world heritage

The mourning ceremonies, held in the Muslim calendar month of Muharram, are an inseparable pillar of Iran’s Islamic culture and its cultural identity.

The rituals, customs, religious shows and especially the elegies are part of the Ashura intangible heritage.

These ceremonies have been developed locally across Iran proportionate to the local culture, language and geography turning into a host of diverse rituals in every place in different historical periods.

Among the intangible heritage of the Ashura، Tazieh, which is a drama reenacting the incidents leading to the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, is a highlight, which was registered on the UNESCO list of Intangible World Heritage in 2010.
It is also part of the national intangible heritage of Iran.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad says set conditions on Israel for ceasefire

Ziyad Nakhalah told a news conference in the Iranian capital Tehran on Sunday that the Islamic Jihad Movement conditioned cessation of hostilities on a number of demands, including the release of two of its senior commanders, Bassam al-Saadi and Khalil al-Awawdeh.

The Islamic Jihad’s military wing, Al-Quds Brigades, launched retaliatory attacks by firing hundreds of rockets into the occupied territories after Israel unleashed an offensive on Gaza on Friday, which left sores of people dead, including six children.

Nakhalah hailed the Palestinian people and Arab and Islamic nations who showed solidarity with the Palestinian resistance, saying “The Islamic Jihad has taken steps to defend the unity between the Palestinian nation and the battlefields and it remains firm, strong, and steadfast.”

He added, “All cities in the occupied territories were within the range of our missiles. The occupation forces could not advance even a meter in Gaza and it was us who struck a balance of terror.”

The secretary general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement said the Palestinian resistance’s successful reprisals during the recent offensive left Israel with no choice but to accept the truce.

Iran FM: Zionists only understand language of power

Amirabdollahian, in an Instagram post, was referring to the latest Israel’s aggression against Gaza and the Palestinian resistance groups’ retaliatory attacks. A truce has been held in the besieged enclave.

The foreign minister said,  “Yesterday, in addition to talks with Qatar’s foreign minister and the UN Secretary General, I held phone talks with foreign ministers of Syria and Lebanon on the Zionist regime’s aggression against the Gaza Strip.”

He added the diplomatic apparatus of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in consultation with allies and neighbors, and while condemning the crimes of the Zionist regime, will always defend the active resistance that will prevent the malice of the occupiers.

The top Iranian diplomat reiterated, “We believe those, who once sought to expand their crimes from the Sea to the River, have now built a wall around themselves in complete isolation, and once in a while, to cover up the multi-layered crises inside the occupied territories, launch blind attacks on women and children that are defeated every single time, and while more humiliated than ever before, continue to build walls around themselves.”

He was referring to ‘Israel’s expansionist policy.’
The Iranian foreign minister said,
“Since the 33-day war (against Lebanon in 2006) up to now, they sought to change the balance of power and to cause fear. Fair and sound observers can bear witness whether they have come out victorious or have been defeated? Truce was established because Zionists only understand the language of power.”

Reports say 32 people including women and children were killed in recent Israeli air raids on Gaza.

Iran foreign ministry urges clarification over killing of diplomats in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan

In a statement, the ministry strongly condemned the unforgettable crime.

The full statement is as follows:

“August 7 brings to mind the very bitter memories that were imposed on the foreign policy apparatus of Iran and the Iranian nation in 1998.

24 years ago and at the height of internal strife in Afghanistan and following the entry of Taliban forces into the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, and contrary to ethical, humanitarian and international obligations, our country’s mission in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif was attacked and diplomats and a journalist of the Islamic Republic of Iran were martyred.

The widespread condemnation of the crime by the international community and also the memorable empathy and sympathy of the dignified people of Afghanistan, was a unique show of the solidarity of the peoples of both countries and led to the Islamic Republic of Iran to stand with its brothers and sisters in Afghanistan honorably and while showing restraint, and to support their will.

The people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran have always stood by the oppressed people of Afghanistan and supports any solution that leads to lasting peace, stability and calm for the people of this country, and safeguards their years-long fight against foreign occupation, while protecting the achievements of the bloods of the dear martyrs of Afghanistan.

Past experience shows, today, the formation of a government comprised of all Afghan elite, who represent all tastes and all esteemed tribes of this country, that leads to a sense of belonging to that government by the people of Afghanistan, can pave the way for a suffering Afghanistan to move toward development ,progress and prosperity and increase the power of its people against the oppressive pressure and sanctions of the west.

The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran once against commemorates the memory of the dear martyrs of the Mazar-i-Sharif incident and condemns the unforgettable crime, while reiterating the necessity of clarification of its different dimensions as a firm demand by the country.

The concurrence of this terrorist incident with the Ashura of Imam Hussein this year is an opportunity to pray for divine mercy and blessing for all martyrs, especially the oppressed martyrs of the terrorist incident in Mazar-i-Sharif.”

Iranian president hails Palestinian resistance fighters, shrine defenders

President Ebrahim Raisi

President Raisi said the bravery of Palestinians is a continuation of the cause of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.

He added that the clout and grandeur shown by the Palestinian resistance is the result of the fight against arrogance and self-belief that Iran’s Islamic Revolution brought to the region.

Raisi noted that in the past Palestinians looked to negotiating tables at Camp David and Sharm al-Sheikh but now they are fighting back against the oppression by the Zionists and have regained the initiative in this struggle.

He added that Palestinians owe this spirit of resistance to the martyrs of the imposed Iraqi war against Iran and the resistance front’s martyrs in Syria known as shrine defenders.

He said the latter repelled the enemies through resistance and they did not let Daesh trample on the dignity of people.

He said the shrine defenders eliminated terrorists, brought security to the region and shielded Iran against terrorists.

EU’s Mora: Iran nuclear talks making progress

EU Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora

Mora made the comment after meeting with the representatives of Iran and the US.

He added that the talks are making progress. The EU top negotiator noted that the delegations were discussing technical issues in their latest meeting.

Asked what differences remain to be resolved in the Vienna negotiations, Mora said he could not get into the details.

Mora however said he hoped the talks will wrap up soon.

Meanwhile, Russia’s representative to the international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said only 5 seconds are left to reach the finish line in the Vienna talks.

Ulyanov further expressed surprise at the absence of the EU top negotiators in this round of talks.

He said their presence would have been helpful.

The top Russian negotiator however said the talks are making progress and that the Iranians are seeking a solution to the deadlock.

He also said the goal is to revive the nuclear deal and remove anti-Iran sanctions.
Ulyanov further rejected the claim that a draft deal on which all sides are working was drawn up by the Europeans.

He said all sides including Russia and China were involved in the drafting of the text.
The Russian envoy cited safeguards issue as a sticking point in the talks, saying it’s not been fully resolved but the negotiations are progressing in this respect.

The Russian diplomat said he views the talks positively and noted that the negotiations are moving in the right direction.
