Iranian and Russian presidents weigh plans to bolster ties

Iran & Russian Presidents Ebrahim Raisi & Vladimir Putin

In a telephone conversation on Thursday, Raisi and Putin discussed the latest status of cooperation between the two countries.

The Russian leader condemned the recent terrorist attack on the shrine of Shah Cheragh in Iran’s Shiraz, and expressed his sympathy with the government and people of Iran as well as the families of victims of the terrorist act.

Stressing the need to broaden cooperation between Russia and Iran, especially in the fields of energy, transit and trade, Putin described it as dynamic and growing.

He also emphasized his country’s readiness and interest in promoting mutual cooperation to regional levels and frameworks.

For his part, President Raisi thanked the Russian president for his sympathy for the recent terrorist attack in Shiraz, saying such criminal actions reveal the desperation and defeat of the enemies and ill-wishers of the Iranian nation and the increase of public hatred of terrorists and their masters, the president’s website reported.

Reviewing the process of economic cooperation between the two countries, Raisi emphasized the implementation of various projects, especially in the transit and energy sectors.

Iran says has made many atomic achievements despite threats, sanctions

Iran Nuclear Program

Mohammad Eslami said Iran has created so many possibilities during the 13th administration’s tenure that, under normal circumstances, it would have taken 11 years to do so.

Eslami cited the heavy water produced by the Arak Khandab nuclear facility as an example, saying it has many customers.

He added that heavy water derivatives are very expensive and Iran is completing investment in the field with high added value.

Eslami was speaking to journalists who were visiting the Khandab facility in central Iran.

Eslami noted that Iran’s adversaries have demonized its nuclear program and this politicized the issue and made it difficult for Tehran to defend its atomic activities.

He also said the output of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran under threats and sabotage attacks is a manifestation of the belief of each and every Iranian scientist in the nuclear industry.

The Iranian nuclear chief underlined that at a time when the country is facing a propaganda campaign and psychological warfare, young Iranian experts are pressing ahead and the AEOI has been transformed from a research body into an industrial complex.

Pakistan appoints new caretaker cabinet for upcoming elections

Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar

The caretaker cabinet’s top job will be to lead Pakistan towards economic stabilisation, with the $350 billion economy treading a narrow recovery path after getting a last minute $3 billion bailout deal from the International Monetary Fund, averting a sovereign debt default.

The election commission said on Thursday that new constituencies based on the latest census would be finalized by Dec. 14, state television reported. After that, the commision will confirm an election date.

Electoral experts have suggested that process could see the nationwide vote pushed back several months, possibly until February. Under the constitution, elections should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of parliament’s lower house, which in this case would mean early November.

In the interim cabinet, former central bank chief Shamshad Akhtar was appointed as finance minister and Pakistan’s former ambassador to the United States, Jalil Abbas Jilani, was named foreign minister, the new information minister Murtaza Solangi said.

The main challenge for the caretaker government and its successor remains the economy. Recent economic reforms have led to historic levels of inflation and high interest rates, putting pressure on ordinary people and businesses.

Kakar, a little-known politician who is believed to be close to the military, was sworn in himself on Monday after President Arif Alvi dissolved parliament last week on the advice of outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Political analysts say that if the caretaker set-up stretches beyond its constitutional tenure, a prolonged period without an elected government would allow the military, which has ruled the country directly for more than three decades of its 76-year existence, to consolidate control.

The opposition party led by former premier Imran Khan had accused Sharif’s coalition of seeking to avoid facing an election as Khan’s popularity grew. Khan is currently under arrest over a conviction for charges stemming from the sale of state gifts.

Khan has denied wrongdoing and his lawyers are lodging appeals over the conviction.

Sharif’s government had denied dragging its feet, saying it is a constitutional requirement to hold elections under the latest census.

Other names in the cabinet include former provincial minister Sarfaraz Bugti as interior minister and Mishaal Malik, the wife of jailed Kashmiri Leader Yaseen Malik, as Minister for Human Rights.

Israeli soldiers fatally shoot Palestinian youth in Jenin raid

Israeli Forces

The Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement that Mustafa al-Kastouni, 32, was killed after he was shot by Israeli forces in the head, chest and abdomen on Thursday.

The killing came after a large unit of the Israeli military stormed Jenin, sparking intense clashes with Palestinians.

Local sources say the occupation troops blew up Kastouni’s house and kidnapped two other Palestinians during the raid.

Some reports identified the victim as a member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which is a coalition of West Bank-based armed Palestinian resistance groups.

The Israeli army claimed that one of its soldiers was slightly injured by shrapnel during the confrontations.

In a statement, the spokesman of the Gaza-based Hamas resistance movement praised the struggle of Jenin resistance fighters, saying the Palestinian city will always remain a resistance stronghold against the occupiers.

Israel launches raids on various West Bank cities almost on a daily basis under the pretext of detaining what it calls “wanted” Palestinians. The raids usually lead to violent confrontations with residents.

The Tel Aviv regime has ramped up such attacks under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, killing more than 200 Palestinians since the beginning of this year.

On July 3-4, Israel waged an aerial and ground offensive against Jenin and its refugee camp. At least 12 Palestinians were killed and 140 others injured during the aggression.
