UK ship attacked by Yemen’s Houthis in Red Sea, sinks

Red Sea

The Yemeni forces announced they attacked the Rubymar on February 18, with several naval missiles in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait — a strategic waterway linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The cargo ship had been drifting northward when it came under attack.

Yemen confirmed that the Rubymar sank late Friday as stormy weather took hold over the Red Sea.

The cargo ship was abandoned for 12 days, even after Yemen warned that the vessel “is in a tragic situation and is on the verge of sinking after water leaked into the engine room”.

Yemeni officials had warned about “a major environmental disaster if it sinks”.

Yemen has targeted ships either owned by the Israeli regime or sailing toward Israeli ports in a strong gesture sympathetic to Palestinians in Gaza over the past few months.

The Yemenis have made it clear that they will not hesitate to carry out qualitative operations against all hostile targets in defense of their homeland and in reaffirmation of their unwavering support for the Palestinian nation.

They stressed earlier that strikes targeting those ships in the Red Sea will not stop unless the regime ends its genocidal campaign.

International shipping companies, however, are safe to sail in the area if they are neither owned by Israel nor destined for ports in the occupied Palestinian territories, according to the Yemeni Armed Forces.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has also confirmed that the cargo vessel attacked by Yemen’s troops sank.

A ranking Yemeni official stated that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his government “bear responsibility” for the sinking of the Rubymar.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, said in a post on his X social media account on Saturday that Sunak and his government are responsible for the sinking of the British vessel over their support for the Israeli regime’s genocidal war against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Houthi stressed that the British government has a “chance to salvage” the Rubymar by authorizing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, which has been under Israel’s incessant bombardment over the past five months.

“We say to Sunak: You and your government bear responsibility for M/V Rubymar and the responsibility to support genocide and siege in Gaza,” the Yemeni official added.

“You have a chance to salvage the M/V Rubymar by sending a letter of guarantee…that the relief trucks agreed upon would enter Gaza.”

Iran has potential to become energy hub: President Raisi

Raisi

Iran’s president made the remarks while addressing the 7th summit of the leaders of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in the Algerian capital, Algiers on Saturday.

Highlighting Iran’s abundant natural gas reserves, strategic geographical location, and advanced technological capabilities, Raisi outlined Tehran’s regional strategy focused on augmenting natural gas production and exports.

He emphasized Iran’s commitment to providing regional nations with enhanced access to this clean and economically valuable energy source.

“Relying on its huge reserves of natural gas, its transit position and high technology, the Islamic Republic of Iran intends to develop bilateral and multilateral cooperation with all countries in the global gas market, especially the neighboring countries from Central Asia to the Persian Gulf and its neighbors in the East and the West to find a role that fits these capacities,” Raisi emphasized.

He further stressed that the capacities within Iran’s gas industry have laid a solid foundation for collaboration among GECF members in both upstream and downstream sectors of natural gas, as well as in its trade.

The Iranian president extended invitations to international investors, as well as those from GECF member countries, to participate in Iran’s energy sector projects, particularly in the natural gas industry.

The GECF, comprised of 13 permanent members and seven observers, was established in 2008 based on an initial proposal by Iran as one of the world’s largest holders of natural gas reserves.

Elsewhere in his address, Raisi condemned the continuation of Israel’s crimes against the Palestinians in Gaza and support of the US and some Western countries for the ongoing genocide in the Strip.

He presented practical solutions and proposals in order to stop Israel’s killing machine, saying, “The current war is the confrontation of the axis of evil against the axis of honor.”

“On one side of the front, there is an army that is waiting for more and stronger weapons and bombs from the US, and on the other side of the front, there are children who miss a bite of bread.”

Raisi added the crimes committed by Israel, the US and their allies should be dealt with in an international court and they should be punished.

He emphasized that Israel should be expelled from the United Nations and all regional and international assemblies and be subject to global sanctions by nations and governments.

“The complete termination of overt and covert relations with this regime is the least that Muslim nations expect from their statesmen, which must be done immediately,” he pointed out.

The Iranian president warned that those who remain silent vis-à-vis the ongoing developments in Gaza will be slapped hard in the future, emphasizing that Palestine is now the “yardstick of humanity, morality and conscience of human society”.

He emphasized that the establishment of the Israeli regime was an arrogant project with the purpose of maintaining the dominance and influence of the West in the West Asia region.

The Palestinian people’s resistance has inflicted an irreparable blow to the Israeli regime, Raisi said, urging all countries to support the oppressed and powerful people of Palestine through all possible means.

“The United Nations Security Council, which is designated as the guarantor of peace and security under the United Nations Charter, has been unable to establish a ceasefire due to the relentless support of the United States for the Zionist regime’s war machine,” he added.

He said the US has left no stone unturned in its political, financial, arms and media support for Israel’s organized terrorism.

The American and European bombs are taking revenge on the Palestinian cause, he added.

“If the US and Europe are really looking for [the promotion of] peace, security and non-expansion of war, they should stop lying and hypocrisy and stop sending weapons and bombs that kill Palestinians,” the president emphasized.

He said despite all the crimes it has committed, Israel has not achieved any of its goals, adding that the Palestinian resistance continues its path.

“The Palestinian nation proved that blood is victorious over the sword,” he stated.

He once again stressed the need to establish an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, lift the blockade on Gaza and dispatch humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged people in the Strip and voiced Iran’s support for any initiative in this regard.

Iran believes that the Palestinian people should determine the fate of the historic land throught votes of Palestinians around the world, including Muslims, Christians and Jews, the president emphasized.

Israel waged its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 30,300 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 71,500 others.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Relief operations underway in Sistan and Baluchistan province, southeastern Iran

Iran Flood

Two Red Crescent helicopters were deployed to the region and are providing people there with relief.

Ya’aqub Soleimani added that 70,000 food packages have been distributed among people in flood-stricken regions.

There are also 75 rescue vehicles in the region with more than 150 operational teams providing relief in the region.

The Red Crescent secretary general noted the situation is returning to normal in the region.

Following the heavy rainfall, the road linking Sarbaz city to Rask city was blocked. This was due to the collapse of Kamel Mountain and more than 378 villages in Dashtiari, Qasrqand, Nikshahr and Chabahar cities are affected by floods.

The rain is so intense that Shikalak, Khairabad and Zirdan dams have overflowed.

European countries must recognize Palestinian state to end war: Foreign minister

Iran Palestine

“Such countries (European countries) have to take their initiative on their own and they have to start by recognizing the state of Palestine,” al-Maliki said during a press conference at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey.

He noted: “Ireland has to be in the forefront of doing so. The Irish people have been demanding this, the Irish parliament has adopted this and right now it depends on the Irish government to take that initiative.”

The Palestinian official also stressed that “the only legitimate authority that will operate and will continue operating in Gaza is the Palestinian Authority.

“Netanyahu is not a citizen of Gaza and not an elected leader of the Palestinian people in Gaza in order (for him) to decide and to determine who will govern Gaza,” Maliki added.

He also called on the Muslim world and the international community to take a clear stance and thwart Israel’s centuries-long efforts to change the situation.

Israel has launched a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip since an Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which Tel Aviv said killed less than 1,200 people.

At least 30,320 Palestinians have since been killed and 71,533 others injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

Israel has also imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip, leaving its population, particularly residents of northern Gaza, on the verge of starvation.

The Israeli war has pushed 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.

Iranian research institute wins GECF award in Algiers

Iran Oil Gas

RIPI was awarded on Friday on the sidelines of the 7th meeting of the GECF Heads of State and Government in the Algerian capital for its research on flare gas collection and putting it into practice.

The head of the research institute, Azim Kalantari Asl, received the award in a ceremony attended by Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji.

RIPI was shortlisted for the GECF award due to its achievements amid US-led Western sanctions.

The award honors figures and institutions that have made outstanding accomplishments in the natural gas sector.

Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi, officially invited by Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune, headed an economic and political delegation to Algiers on Saturday to take part in the summit and deliver a speech on Iran’s policies to safeguard GECF member states’ interests.

Inequality increased in Russia: Report

Kremlin

Rosstat uses the Gini index, a measure of income distribution across a population, which assesses inequality on a scale from 0 to 1, where higher values indicate higher inequality.

The index reading rose to 0.403 last year, up from 0.395 in 2022, meaning that the income gap among the population had increased, according to Rosstat.

“In 2023, according to preliminary data, the 10% of the population that are the highest earners accounted for 29.7% of total income (29.1% in 2022) and the 10% most disadvantaged population accounted for 2.0% (2.1% in 2022),” reads the report.

The document also states that real wages in Russia increased by 7.8% last year. ‘Real wages’ is a term used to describe income adjusted for inflation, or wages in terms of the amount of goods and services that can be bought.

The average monthly salary at the end of last year, according to preliminary data, amounted to an equivalent of $810.

In a keynote speech at the Federal Assembly on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin tasked the government with reducing poverty among the population from the current 9% to below 7% by 2030.

Iran gas production grew 2.5 times more than global average during ten-year period: Oil minister

Iran Gas

Owji said the latest figures released by reliable international sources show, despite the illegal US sanctions, natural gas production in Iran has been on the rise since 2011, saying the bans have not been able to stop or reverse this trend.

The Iranian minister pointed out that despite all sanctions-related problems, the growing trend of gas production in Iran continued in the year 2023.

In other comments he referred to the recent sabotage against Iran’s gas industry, stating the terrorists’ plot to disrupt gas flow and to harm people was foiled, thanks to the vigilance or Iranian experts.

On Wednesday, February 14, two gas pipelines were hit in acts of sabotage in the provinces of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari and Fars.Soon after the act of sabotage, the gas transmission pipelines were repaired and the energy flow resumed.

Iranian daily questions efficiency of electoral system in Iran

Iran Election

A day after the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections were held in Iran, Etela’at wrote in an article on Saturday, “For decades, all sympathizers and experts have been talking about the necessity to change the election mechanism, which does not contribute to electing the best candidates, nor is it comparable to other parliamentary democracies.”

The daily also called on the lawmakers in the new parliament to show gratitude to those who voted for them as well as to the establishment and the country by “serving the people without making them feel beholden.”

People across Iran voted on Friday to choose the new members from among over 15,000 candidates for the 290-seat parliament for four years.

This is while, according to surveys there has been a widespread dissatisfaction with the outgoing parliament for its failure to cater to the people’s needs in their ratifications, given the increase in inflation over the recent years.

“We hope that the incoming parliament will leave a better and clearer record than the current parliament to draw a principled and correct road map to overcome the difficult crises the country and the nation are facing,” Etela’at wrote.

Israeli army in ‘shock’ amid shortage of 1000s of soldiers: Report

Israeli Army

“The army is experiencing intensifying personnel shortages,” Ynetnews, the website for Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot, reported on Friday.

The military, it added, “urgently requires an additional 7,000 soldiers, with half of these intended for combat roles.”

“It’s crucial to note that this figure is over and above the soldiers already slated for recruitment in upcoming cycles.”

The regime’s treasury is, however, only approving 2,500 additional forces.

These “unprecedented” figures underscore the “shock” that was being experienced by the Israeli military in the wake of nearly 150 days of the war, the website said.

The Israeli regime began waging the onslaught against Gaza on October 7, following al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise operation staged by the coastal sliver’s resistance groups against the occupied territories.

At least 30,228 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and 71,377 others been injured so far during the war.

Ynet noted, meanwhile, that approximately 582 troops had been killed in the war. “Several more are physically and psychologically wounded, to the extent that they are unable to return to their roles,” it added.

On Wednesday, the Israeli minister for military affairs highlighted the heavy toll the war was inflicting on the regime’s military.

“We are paying a very high price in our ranks…The costs we incur in terms of the numbers of deaths and injuries are very high,” he said.

Despite causing a massive death toll and suffering fatalities, the Israeli military has stopped short of achieving the goals that it has been seeking to score through the war, such as “destroying” Hamas, finding the captives that the Gaza-based resistance movement is holding, and bringing about forced displacement of the Palestinian territory’s population to neighboring Egypt.

Raisi in Algeria in first visit of Iranian president in more than a decade

Ebrahim Raisi

Heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, Raisi departed Tehran for Algiers in the early hours of Saturday to attend the 7th meeting of the leaders of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

During the visit, which comes at the official invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Iranian chief executive is scheduled to meet with other top officials from the 19-member gathering of the world’s leading natural gas producers.

The two presidents are also set to sign several memoranda of understanding on the sidelines of the international meeting.

Raeisi’s trip marks the fourth visit of Iranian presidents to the North African country, which took place with a gap of about 14 years after former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit in 2010.

The GECF, which is comprised of 13 permanent members and seven observers, was established in 2008 based on an initial proposal by Iran as one of the world’s largest holders of natural gas reserves.

Raisi’s trip comes on the backdrop of Iran’s efforts to boost relations with countries in North Africa, including Sudan, with which Iran had strained relations in recent years, and with Egypt, a country that has had no diplomatic relations with Iran since 1979.
