UN welcomes Iran’s proposals on dust particles: Ebtekar

Vice-President and Head of the Department of Environment Masoomeh Ebtekar said on Saturday that Iran has suggested the UN ways of eliminating dust particles problem worldwide.

Ebetkar also told a press conference on the first day of the Environment Protection Week that Iran has also proposed the UN to regard the dust particles as a global intricacy.

She added that the UN has welcomed both proposals.

She noted that global warming and its consequences have drastic impact on world environment, including Iran.

Ebtekar said studies show that the world has over the past 30 years has got warmer by 0.85 Celsius – the figure is between 1 to 1.5 degrees in Iran.

She noted that each degree of climate warming sparks six percent increase in water consumption, especially in the agriculture sector, and the Gross National Production suffers three percent. ‘So, confronting earth warming is of extreme significance.’

Ebtekar opined that by end of this Christian Year, talks on climate change will be finalized in Paris. ‘In the talks, the industrial states’ challenges, which have a great share in emission of greenhouse gases and earth warming, are raised,’ she added, emphasizing that Iran plays an important role in the talks and will continue to do so in the future.

One of the proposals of Iran to the UN was raising the issue of dust checking worldwide because one of the consequences of global warming is dust, said Ebtekar.

She noted that now Iran faces drust stoom problem which comes from the neighboring country. ‘Our main problem is the provisions of a joint protocol with Iraq, which is the main source of dust. Insecurity, war and conflict prevent any action to fight the phenomenon.’

Ebtekar had said in an interview in February that coping with the dust particles problem requires a long term planning and that temporary arrangements are not practical.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 14th International Environment Exhibition, Ebtekar told reporters that the administration does not intend to conceal the realities regarding dust particles challenge which needs a long term planning to overcome.

She added that in the past some other countries including China, Korea and Japan had faced dust particles phenomenon and could achieve good results through regional and international cooperation, even though they have not been fully able to overcome the problem.

Ebtekar regretted that some funds which had been earmarked for protection of environment in the draft budget were omitted from next year’s budget bill adding that ratification of proposed funds was very important for DoE in order to provide necessary equipment for monitoring, measurement and addressing environmental issues.

“By removing these funds from next year’s budget, we will undoubtedly face more delays and will lag behind the schedule in tackling environmental problems,” DOE chief said in a shana.ir report.

She said: ‘Unfortunately some recent years policies led to the drying up of Hourolazim lagoon even though it has been provided with water in recent days, a subject that Minister of Health confirms.”

According to her, domestic car makers have been obliged to observe euro-4 standards and they have to put into force euro-5 standards in the next phase while they will proceed with making hybrid and electric vehicles at home in the future.
